Processed Meats

Lunch meat tends to be a favorite food, especially among the younger crowds out there. Unfortunately, food items such as ham, turkey, bacon, sausage, and even hot dogs, are loaded with chemical preservatives to help the meat appear fresh and healthy. These preservatives can cause cancer within the human body, though. Both sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite have been known to increase the chances of contracting colon and other forms of cancer. The chemical, which the Environmental Protection Agency has found to be perfluorooctanoic acid, is found within the lining of the bag. This chemical, thanks to studies, has been known to to cause tumors within the human body. A chemical within the popcorn itself has also been known to cause both lung damage and cancer, too. Cutting it out altogether could be beneficial.

Diet Foods
Stores and the brands that are sold within them try to push a lot of products, especially frozen meals, off as a completely healthy, low-fat option for those on a diet at the moment. However, the majority of these diet foods tend to be incredibly bad for people. These meals are said to be worse than conventional sugar-sweetened soda, for example. Studies by the European Food Safety Authority have revealed that apartame, one of the most commonly used artificial sweeteners, can cause a range of illnesses including birth defects and cancer. Sucralose, saccharin, and other artificial sweeteners have been linked to causing cancer, too. The boxes for these frozen meals may lead you to believe they are healthy due to their contents, or lack thereof, but it is what has been added in to ensure it is fresh that is the real danger within the packaging. ALCOHOL

Alcohol has always been known to cause problems within the human body, especially when one drinks far more than they should. An American study revealed that the intake of alcohol in over 200,000 women who drank one drink per day or less had an almost 30 percent increase in breast cancer rates when compared to those who did not drink at all. Alcohol is currently the second leading cause of cancer, just behind tobacco usage. Moderate to low consumption of alcohol can be healthy and even lead to a reduced risk in heart disease, but excessive drinking may cause heart failure, stroke, or sudden death. The World Health Organizations International Agency for Research on Cancer found that alcohol usage may cause mouth, esophagus, liver, colon, rectum, and female breast cancers. A glass of wine or alcohol after dinner could be good for your health, but leave it at one to ensure nothing bad occurs.

Artificial Sweeteners
Artificial sweeteners tend to be used when people try to lose weight or avoid sugar due to their dietary concerns. Unfortunately, the problem with these alternatives is that those who consume them on a regular basis, such as in soda or coffee sweeteners, tend to actually gain weight overall. They also do far little to nothing to help with those suffering from diabetes. In fact, artificial sweeteners tend to make it far more difficult for the body to regular the blood sugar levels. Aspartame, a chemical within the sweeteners, has been found to cause convulsions in some people. These chemicals are broken down within the body into a deadly toxin known as DKP. Your stomach then processes this toxin and it will produce chemicals that may cause cause, especially brain tumors in some people. When you need to find a substitute for your substitute sweetener, you know the chemicals used are getting out of hand in the food industry.

WHITE FLOURS
Refined white flour is a common ingredient within the majority of processed foods. The excess carbohydrate content within the flour is the main cause for concern, however. A study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Mile Markers, and Prevention discovered that refined carbohydrates were linked to a 220 percent increase in breast cancer among women. Rapid rises in blood sugar levels throughout the body, which fuel cancer cell growth and spread, were also discovered within high-glycemic foods in general. Limiting the amount of French fries you eat, or finding a healthier alternative overall, is the best option when attempting to avoid the growth or spread of cancerous cells in the body.

CANNED TOMATOES
The majority of canned products sold within your local shopping mart are a cause for concern, but canned tomatoes appear to be the worst. The lining in the cans used to contain said food is made using a chemical known as bisphenol-A, or BPA. This chemical is highly toxic to the human body and will speed the growth of cancerous cells inside. However, tomatoes tend to be exceptionally dangerous due to the high levels of acidity within them. This acidity causes the BPA to leech from the lining of the can and into the food themselves. These can be so high in fact that the consumer should consider not feeding their children canned tomatoes whatsoever. There are currently no FDA laws that require a company to label BPA. In order to avoid these chemicals, consumers should purchase fresh tomatoes or glass bottles for their sauce. Moderation may not be key in these circumstances due to the acidity within the tomatoes themselves.

FARMED SALMON
Fish is considered one of the healthiest options you can pick when you’re shopping for meat in the store. However, farmed salmon is something you should really avoid when you’re looking for a healthy option. Unfortunately, over 60 percent of the salmon consumed within the United States was raised on a farm specifically built for that purpose. These fish are fed unnatural diets that are full of chemicals, antibiotics, pesticides, and other well known carcinogens. These animals live in crowded conditions that have been found to have 30 times the number of sea lice than wild salmon. The chemicals these fish are fed help ensure their meat is the reddish pink color that should occur naturally, but doesn’t. There are also less healthy omega-3 that is known to be within fish. High levels of PCB’s, mercury, and cancer causing dioxins are located within farmed salmon. Avoid these and purchase canned or look for labels that state the fish you are using is wild sockeye salmon.

POTATO CHIPS

Potato chips are difficult to put down once you sit back in your favorite chair or on the couch with a bag and a favorite movie or television series. We all tell ourselves we’ll only have one or two, maybe a handful, but it turns into half the bag before you even know it. These chips are said to contain high levels of acrylamide, another carcinogenic substance that is activated when foods are heated to high temperatures through baking or frying. Studies done on animals have revealed various types of cancer can be caused through these chemicals. Along with the acrylamide, potato chips contain artificial flavoring, many different types of preservatives, and coloring, too. Baked potato chips or tortilla chips are a healthier option, both of which are lower in fat and calories. Air popped popcorn and whole wheat pretzels are even better. Moderation is the most important when it comes to snack foods.

Salted, Smoked, or Pickled Foods
Nitrates don’t cause cancer on their own, but under certain conditions the chemicals can be changed within the body intro N-nitroso composites. Foods that are cured by the usage of nitrates or nitrites to act as preservatives or add color to the food in question tend to be the worst off. Refined Sugars
Sugar in large quantities has always been bad for the human body, though it is also a necessity in some cases, too. However, refined sugars have been known to rapidly spike insulin levels and feed the growth of cancer cells within the human body. Fructose-rich sweeteners like high-fructose corn syrup have been known to be some of the worst offenders. Cancer cells have been found to appear quickly and easily metabolize to spread throughout the body in those who eat too much refined sugar in their diet. Cookies, cakes, pie, soda, cereal, sauce, juice, and many other processed foods use these types of sugars regularly. Cancer rates are on the rise due to the aforementioned food items being readily available within stores throughout the country. Red Meat
Eating red meat is almost a national past time within the United States. Small amounts of red meat can be really beneficial to your health, but choosing the grass fed beef as an option is the far healthier choice. Overindulging, like in many other types of foods, is where the problem lies. Research conducted by the Harvest Medical School have shown that frequent, high consumption of red meat is linked to increases in development of colorectal cancer. The same study revealed both fish and chicken were healthier options to protect and decrease the risk of cancer growth. Again, eating red meat in small quantities is just fine. Check the label on your package before purchase, though.

DIRTY FRUITS
Most people get it in their mind that they are heating healthier than most others when they opt for apples, grapes, or strawberries while they are in the store shopping. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Unless the consumer is purchasing organic or those fruits verified to be completely pesticide-free, the risk of cancer is rather large. The Environmental Working Group has discovered that 98 percent of conventional produce, especially those within the ‘dirty’ fruits list, is contaminated by cancer causing pesticides. When eaten by a pregnant women, babies have been found to be born with a reduced body weight. Along with that, the chemicals found within the pesticide residue on apples, oranges, strawberries, and grapes are some of the worst around. 90 percent of these fruits were found to contain the pesticide residue. Washing, unfortunately, does not always help remove this residue. Verify what was used in the cultivation before purchasing ‘dirty’ fruits.

Hydrogenated Oils

Processed foods are really bad for you, this we probably all know already. However, it is what is in the processed food that is the problem for most people. These hydrogenated oils are commonly used to preserve processed food and to keep them stable while being stuck on a shelf for long periods of time. These oils tend to alter the structure and integrity of cell membranes within the human body, which tends to lead towards diseases such as cancer. Some manufacturers are working to remove the usage of hydrogenated oils and replace them with palm oil or another safe alternative. Trans fats are still widely used, unfortunately. Vegetable oils tend to contain high levels of Omega-6 fatty acids, of which an excess can cause health problems. A balance must be formed between Omega 3 and Omega 6 for a healthy diet. Supplements and grass fed meats should do the trick to balance oils out.

Femen, Israel and its Jewish Backers
The famous third-wave feminist group known as Femen has hit the news once again with its best known member; Inna Shevchenko, has been chosen as one of the models (not 'the' model as some were proclaiming) for Marianne (the symbol of France) by its socialist president: François Hollande. (1) Aside from Shevchenko's rather embarrassing reaction to it (and the resulting public relations disaster for Femen): this assignation of status to a group only founded in 2008 is incredible and has been built largely off the back of Femen's shock tactics (which ironically make men think of them in the same light as prostitutes although it has been discovered that some of them are actual prostitutes) (2) as well as their links to the lefty-liberal feminist cause célèbre: 'Pussy Riot'. (3)

The interesting thing about Femen for us is two fold. In the first the source of the funding for the organization, which has been reported to be paying double to triple the average wage in the Ukraine. (4) The second is the battles that it has been picking or more precisely which group and country it has notably left out of its burlesque-style protests: jews and Israel.

When we look at Femen's source of funding; which must be considerable given that they pay each activist double/triple the average Ukrainian wage and also pay $2500 a month for their headquarters building plus have offices and 'training academies' in several countries; most notably France and Germany, and factoring in that this funding must be external to the founders who were from poor families in provincial Ukraine. (5)

From what is known about their funding: the key player appears to be an individual named Jed Sunden. (6) Sunden is a Brooklyn-born American jew who founded a major Ukrainian newspaper/media company; KP Media (which owned the Kyiv Post till 2008/2009 for example) , (7) and also is an active part of the Ukrainian jewish community. ( Sunden was the man who 'discovered' Femen and it was he who began to give them the oxygen of publicity (and notoriety) for their topless protesting in the Kyiv Post. (9)

Sunden was the one who introduced Femen to Bavarian multi-millionaire business woman Beate Schober; who it is reported provides part of the funding, (10) while the other known backer is Helmut Geier (a successful DJ and record label owner from Bavaria). Geier knew the erstwhile founder of Femen; Anna Hutsol, due to her having worked with him and was not introduced to the group through Sunden.

I would suggest that the two principle backers of Femen are Sunden and Geier with Schober taking an ancillary role. (11) My reason for arguing this is because Sunden and Geier are unafraid to be publicly associated with Femen and both have already taken public credit for its financing since 2008. Schober on the other hand has kept out of the limelight and her introduction to Femen seems to have been relatively late and mentions of her funding are the exception not the rule.

This suggests that the two principle players financing Femen are Sunden and Geier as well as that of the two Sunden is the more important. Now we know Sunden is jewish, but what hasn't been remarked on is that Geier is quite possibly also a member of the tribe as while his is a common German surname: it is also a fairly common Ashekanzi jewish one as well. (12) Now unless other evidence surfaces to suggest as such: I would not argue that Geier is a jew, but it is important to note the possibility that this is the case.

This jewish money and influence behind Femen seems to also be reflected in the organization's public activities in so far as it protests against a vast number of things in different countries, including outraging Islamic opinion by performing topless stunts in North Africa and outside mosques in Europe. (13) This is in addition to Femen's attacks on anything even remotely conservative as being 'patriarchal' as well as their fairly crude hatred of religion writ large (and without qualification), but primarily of Christianity and Islam which they consider (as good third wave feminists) to be 'evil patriarchal religions' responsible for 'innumerable atrocities against women' as being intrinsically deeply oppressive towards the fairer sex.

Now the remarkable exception to this is that Femen have not moved against Judaism (which lets remember like Islam has its own unofficial squads of 'modesty police' such as that uncovered [again] in New York earlier this year [i.e. 2013]) and nor has it criticised Israel in the slightest to my knowledge. This is in spite of Femen being radically left-wing in its ideological leanings and supporting traditional left-wing causes. It is decidedly odd that Femen should have never criticised Israel (a search of Femen's web pages/links and twitter/facebook feeds revealed no criticism of Judaism or Israel) precisely because Judaism is well-known for being highly patriarchal and there is a massive controversy in Judaism going on involving feminist activism at the Kotel (the Western Wall). Yet Femen are absolutely silent on this swirling feminist maelstrom and also on Judaism's anti-female practices!

Indeed Femen have even skirted around Israel totally and protested against Iran! (14)

It is difficult to conclude much from Femen's organizational behaviour thus far, but their singular lack of criticism of Judaism and/or Israel and their funding being primarily provided by at least one jew seem to be linked. It would certainly make sense of this oddity and is indicative that Al-Manar's suggestion that they be considered a 'Zionist front group' is quite reasonable. (15)

US biotech giant Monsanto has been found guilty on appeal of poisoning a French farmer after he inhaled weedkiller. The farmer hailed the decision say it showed Monsanto "was not above the law".

A French court on Thursday upheld a ruling in which US biotech giant Monsanto was found guilty of poisoning a farmer who says he suffered neurological damage after inhaling a weedkiller made by the company.

The plaintiff, cereal farmer Paul Francois, said the decision proved that "David can win against Goliath... And a giant like Monsanto is not above the law."

The case, heard by an appeal court in the southeast city of Lyon, is the first of its kind in France.

The court confirmed a 2012 ruling that Monsanto was "responsible" for the intoxication by its Lasso weedkiller and ordered the US giant to fully compensate Francois.

The farmer said he suffered damage to his health in 2004 after inhaling fumes while he was using Lasso on his maize crop.

Monsanto, which has maintained throughout the process that the product was not dangerous, said it would appeal the decision.

"The decision is very surprising given the inaccuracies and errors that dot Paul Francois's evidence," said the company's lawyer Jean-Daniel Bretzner.

"But this is just another step and the discussion is going to go on and the fight will go on," he added.

Paul Francois argued that Monsanto was aware of the dangers of Lasso long before it was withdrawn from the French market in 2007.

Lasso, which contains high levels of highly toxic monochlorobenzene, was withdrawn from sale in Canada in 1985 and was banned in Belgium and Britain in 1992.

Hundreds of refugees have spent this week trying to catch trains, hitch lifts and even walk from Denmark to Sweden. The Local looks into why so many new arrivals would rather seek asylum north of the famous Öresund bridge.
1. It's a numbers game
Put simply, Sweden takes in more asylum seekers per capita than any other EU nation, while Denmark has a track record for adopting some of the toughest immigration policies in Europe.

In 2014 Sweden offered protection to 33,025 people who applied for asylum, while Denmark gave residence permits to 6,104 refugees, a much lower figure as a proportion of its population. However, Denmark was the EU's fifth largest recipient of asylum seekers per capita last year.

Around 9.5 million live in Sweden while there are 5.6 million in Denmark.

2. Sweden offers permanent residency to all Syrian arrivals

Refugees fleeing the violence in Syria make up the largest proportion of people seeking asylum across Europe and in 2013 Sweden became the first country in Europe to rule that all refugees from the war-torn nation would be granted permanent residency in the light of the worsening conflict.

Previously, around half of Syrian asylum seekers had been granted permanent residency, with the remaining half receiving three-year residence permits.

So far no other European country has followed Sweden's lead. Denmark introduced temporary one-year permits for Syrian refugees last year with the stated intention of sending them back home "as soon as conditions improve" in the war-ravaged country.

3. Many refugees already have family in Sweden

Given the huge numbers of Syrians who have already been given protection in Sweden (16,785 in 2014 alone), it is unsurprising that many refugees would prefer to set up home close to friends and family.
Sweden offers residency permits to immediate family members of those already granted asylum (husband, wife, partner and children - under the age of 18).

Last year, Denmark announced it would only allow for family reunifications if a refugee's initial one-year residency permit was renewed, a move heavily criticized by the United Nations Refugee Agency and others.

4. Sweden offers strong social benefits for refugees

Asylum seekers are offered immediate emergency accommodation on arrival in Sweden before being relocated to temporary housing. Single adults are given a daily benefit of 71 Swedish kronor per day (2,159 kronor or $256 per month), with more available for those with families.

Those granted asylum are then given help finding accommodation, are entitled to free Swedish for Immigrants lessons and may also be offered an 'introduction benefit' from Arbetsförmedlingen, Sweden's Employment Agency, giving them an income of 6,468 Swedish kronor per month ($769) while they search for work.

Denmark also offers social benefits and free language lessons for immigrants. But while it is generally more expensive to live in Denmark than in Sweden, the Danish government has recently slashed the amount of so-called 'integration' money it gives to new arrivals by 45 percent to 5,945 Danish kroner ($891) for a a single adult with no children. This too was subject to criticism from the United Nations and humanitarian organizations.

5. Global reputation

Sweden has an international image of openness and tolerance. And while the anti-immigration Sweden Democrat party is growing in popularity, the current government is a Social Democrat-Green coalition strongly in favour of helping refugees.

In recent months lengthening waiting times for asylum claims to be processed have hit the headlines and a Syrian comic caused a stir after warning that Sweden might not offer everything immigrants hoped for. But the country has cemented its reputation in recent weeks, with repeated calls by Prime Minister Stefan Löfven for Swedes to support refugees and for other European nations to follow his country's lead.

By contrast, Denmark's new single-party government is led by the right-of-centre Venstre, which needs the support of the anti-immigration Danish People's Party to push its agendas through parliament. The government recently launched an information campaign in foreign newspapers to deter refugees from setting foot on Danish soil. Even the country's former centre-left government headed by Helle Thorning-Schmidt touted a hard-line approach to refugees and immigrants, a record that may come back to haunt Thorning-Schmidt as she jockeys for the position of UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Danes defying laws and transporting migrants to Sweden

Danish citizens are defying European asylum laws and helping migrants get to Sweden.

Swedish Police spokesman Lars Forstell said today that 14 people have been detained under suspicion they illegally transported migrants across the Øresund Bridge from Copenhagen to Malmö.

Those arrested do not seem to be part of organised smuggling networks, rather individuals who wanted to help migrants come to Sweden for humanitarian reasons.

“It’s my duty”
Under EU rules they are supposed to apply for asylum in the first EU country they enter, not travel from one country to the next.

Anders Holsteng, a 35-year-old Danish teacher, told DR he had called in sick on Tuesday to drive a handful of Syrians to Malmö after giving them shelter overnight.

“I believe it’s my duty to help people,” he said.

Meanwhile, a group of young Danes have taken to the seas to help migrants get to Sweden.

Across the border over the waves
Annika Holm Nielsen and three friends waited at Copenhagen’s main train station for migrants arriving on a train from Germany.

“We saw a man who looked like he could be a refugee and showed him a sign that said ‘Welcome, would you like to go to Sweden’,” Nielsen told DR.

“The man nodded, but since there were police everywhere, we hustled him from the station and sailed him to Sweden.”

Nielsen, who said on her Facebook page that European law has now turned her into a human smuggler, explained the experience was both surreal and humbling.

“He just kept saying: ‘I trust you, I trust you,’” she said.

Nielsen said she felt compelled to help, even though transporting refugees to Sweden is illegal.

“This man has endured so many terrible things. We felt like we had to help him.”

Hopes to inspire others
A group of Swedes on the other end helped get the man to the Swedish authorities and get him registered.

The Swedish Migration Agency reports that about 700 people have applied for asylum in Malmö since last week.

“Of course I don’t want to be arrested, but when the law is unfair, one is compelled to break it,” she said.

Nielsen would not say if she planned any more trips, but she hoped that her actions would inspire others to help get migrants to Sweden.

Danish police have urged people who want to help migrants to donate food or clothes, not shelter them illegally or smuggle them across borders.

Norway billionaire offers 5,000 nights to refugees


A Norwegian billionaire who made his fortune in the hotel business offered on Tuesday 5,000 nights in his hotel chain to refugees who do not have a spot in asylum centres
“We are offering 5,000 nights to refugees who need it,” Petter Stordalen, who owns the Nordic Choice Hotels chain, wrote on Twitter.

The migrant drama unfolding in Europe “concerns absolutely everyone,” he told Norwegian news agency NTB, adding that he would also cover the meal costs for the refugees who stay in his establishments.

The Norwegian migration board UDI said it would consider Stordalen’s offer if its centres were overflowing.

Norway received 2,313 asylum requests in August, most of them from Syrians, Eritreans and Afghans, the highest number registered in a single month since the 1990s.

According to UDI, the number of asylum requests could reach up to 16,000 for the full year of 2015, compared to 11,480 in 2014

One of Oslo's leading mosques has been banned from accommodating refugees after the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) ruled that organisation's providing emergency help should be "neutral".

At least 700 new refugees, mainly from Syria, are expected to arrive in Norway this week and the UDI is coordinating with charities and other organisation who can provide temporary accommodation for those arriving.

The Islamic Cultural Centre, Norway's oldest mosque, had offered the UDI assistance by providing shelter, an offer that has now been denied.

"We have enough volunteers and sanitation is in place. If we can help, we are ready," Arshad Jamil of ICC told Norway's state broadcaster NRK.

The UDI's call for organisations to offer accommodation to make up for its shortage of beds has already been met by the Norwegian Red Cross for assistance, which has offered 60 beds for for overnight visitors, and the Norwegian Armed Forces, who have pledged to make available disused military barracks.

Frode Forfang, the UDI's director, said that the directorate could not use religious organisations.

"Those behind an offer of reception may well have basic values, even if they are religious or political. We could have used the Salvation Army, or the Church City Mission for that matter. But the actual offer needs to be neutral," he said, adding that in the ICC's case, the building itself was religious and therefore not suitable.

Jamil said he did not believe the ICC's facilities were in any way different from those of the Church City Mission.

With a population of only six, it’s been dubbed “the dying town”. But on a recent visit to the hilltop Civita di Bagnoregio, The Local spoke to one of the inhabitants, and discovered a fervent desire to keep it very much alive.

There is no post office, no supermarket, no chemist, no hospital and the one school shut down decades ago.

All that is left of Civita di Bagnoregio, the Lazio town founded by the Etruscans more than 2,500 years ago, is a cluster of holiday homes, a B&B, restaurants and souvenir shops, all catering to the tourists who come to marvel at and indulge this gem of Italy’s past.

Oh, and a steadfast full-time population of six, a number that swells to about 100 at the height of summer.

One who decided to stay, as all her childhood friends fled, is Arianna, the 39-year-old owner of La Cantina di Arianna, a restaurant that forms part of her ancestral home.

"At one time, it was a place that had a lovely community spirit, there was a lot of human contact; we were like one big family," she told The Local.

"All that has gone now, but so much of my family history is here...my livelihood is here... and I don’t want to live anywhere else."

Arianna, whose ancestors came to the town more than 1,000 years ago and worked as farmers in the surrounding area, grew up on the three or four winding streets that make up Civita, only leaving to cross the footbridge to nearby Bagnoregio to attend school.

Once considered the “jewel city of the Tiber Valley”, Civita started to decline in the 17th century, due to earthquakes and soil erosion which sent many of its medieval buildings tumbling down the cliffs, and the inhabitants fleeing to nearby towns.

Nowadays the town, which sits precariously atop a precipice in a fairytale-like setting, can only be reached by a narrow footbridge - a walk, much of it an incline, that takes about ten minutes.

The town is inaccessible to vehicles other than mopeds, which is how Arianna receives most of the supplies for her restaurant.

Civita’s survival has always been dictated by the forces of nature – landslides in particular - as well as the money then needed to repair the damage.

But it was only in 2013 that a €1.50 fee to enter the town was introduced, in an effort to raise funds for its upkeep
Some of this effort can be seen in the way the pretty, narrow streets and main square are meticulously maintained.

With road signs leading visitors to “the dying town” from Bagnoregio, the nickname is also an alluring way of attracting curious sightseers.

“There’s been a big increase in the number of tourists coming over the past few years,” said Arianna.

“Especially from China.”

But despite the connotations of a rapidly approaching death, the town has become somewhat of a mecca for hippies and artists, albeit wealthy ones.

The majority of the houses are second homes, used by the owners for holidays and at weekends, Arianna said.

Earlier this year, a group of Italian artists and cultural heavyweights, including Ennio Morricone, the film composer, got together to appeal for Civita to be saved.

The petition, also signed by Italy’s former president, Giorgio Napoletano, called on the town to be classed as a Unesco World Heritage site.

But the locals believe a lot more needs to be done, especially when it comes to protecting the town from landslides.

And she took away some other benefits - like a new love for cooking, and an emphasis on living charitably.

One thing she couldn't wait to get back to once the project was over was cutting her hair once again. 'The Apostle Paul said 'it is a woman's glory to have long hair,' but he wouldn't have said that if he had seen mine!" she laughed. "It was definitely not my glory. I was ready to cut my glory off."
Ultimately, Evans says her book aims to be more than a good gag. "I want to liberate us from the idea that there's only one right way to be a woman of faith

For a full year Rachel Held Evans did not cut her hair. She covered her head when she prayed. She publicly praised her husband— even calling him "Master" for a week.

No, she did not lose a bet.

Even though Evans lives in the "buckle of the Bible belt," in Dayton, Tenn., she says didn't know how hard it would be to truly live biblically until she spent a year following all the rules of the Good Book - literally.

Evans who was raised an evangelical Christian, started her experiment in 2010, when she realized she was tired of watching conservative religious leaders use the excuse of "biblical womanhood" to hold women back from leadership positions and to create an ideal that left the female side of the faith - including herself - feeling like they were falling short.

"In evangelical culture I was always being told how important it was to live up to that ideal, but no one could agree what it was or what it meant," she told the Daily News.
So she decided to find out, using herself as a test subject. Scouring the Bible and consulting experts to identify all the passages that contained instructions for women, Evans put together a list of strict guidelines she would follow for the next twelve months in an attempt to achieve full "biblical womanhood."

Yes, this included calling her husband "Master" for a week - an experience he said was very uncomfortable. She also avoided contact with all men for the 12 days after she started her period, in accordance with the words of Leviticus, which classifies the menstrual cycle and the seven days after it as a period of time in which a woman
is considered "unclean."

Evans who was raised an evangelical Christian, started her experiment in 2011.

"No handshakes, no high fives, no hugs, and obviously no sex," Evans explained of the 12-day process, during which her literal interpretation of the Bible meant she also had to sleep outside in a tent and carry a stadium cushion around with her because anywhere she sat was also considered unclean. "That was a surprisingly isolating experience."

She also got well-acquainted with her rooftop, which she climbed up to as penance for one minute every time she caught herself acting "contentious" - since the Bible instructs that "it is better to live on the corner of a roof than to live with a contentious woman."

Evans's project, which is the basis of her new book, "A Year of Biblical Womanhood," was essentially an adaptation of a similar experiment done in 2006 by author A.J. Jacobs, chronicled in his memoir "The Year of Living Biblically." Evans says she thought doing the same experiment as a woman would be a great opportunity to shed light on the casual way the phrase "biblical womanhood" is used by conservatives today, to show how difficult and antiquated the notion is when taken in its entirety.

Orthodox Jewish Men Cause Flight Delays After Refusing To Sit Next To Women
According to Israel Radio, the stand-off was eventually resolved when an American travelling to Israel offered to change seats.


A Delta Airlines flight from New York's JFK Airport to Israel was delayed by half an hour when a group of ultra-Orthodox Jewish men refused to sit next to female passengers.

Delta Flight 468, bound for Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport, was reportedly held up due to several Haredi passengers refusing to to sit in their assigned seats, which were in between two women.

The delay was prolonged when the two female passengers involved reportedly refused to move to accommodate the men's request, claiming discrimination.

It is not the first time an international flight has been delayed due to issues about seat arrangements.

In September, passengers flying with Israeli airline El Al from New York reported a delay when Haredi passengers refused to sit next to women and reportedly went as far as offering them money to move.

Waiting times growing as long as nine months
The five national HPV centres that opened on July 1 are already stretched to the limit by young girls and women who are believed to be suffering side-effects from the HPV vaccine.

As of now, over 1,100 girls displaying symptoms such as muscle spasms, dizziness and a loss of consciousness have been referred to the centres, according to a survey by Metroxpress newspaper.

“We are still being referred a number of girls and are up to about 265 in total,” Vibeke Neergaard Sørensen, a doctor at the diagnosis centre at the regional hospital in Silkeborg, told Metroxpress.

Sørensen said the centre had only expected about 50 girls to turn up, but their waiting list is now about nine months as a result.

Woefully under prepared
The story is pretty much the same in the nation’s other four regions. In the capital region, some 525 girls have been referred to the regional HPV centre in Frederiksberg. In north Jutland they’ve received 100, while there have been 170 in Zealand. Odense stopped counting after reaching 60 in June alone.

“It’s a disaster. They’ve established five HPV centres without having the personnel in place to receive the girls, and now they might have to wait a half or whole year,” said Karsten Viborg, a father to one of the ill girls, who is the co-founder of an association for girls injured by HPV vaccines, Landsforeningen HPV-bivirkningsramte.

Since the HPV vaccine was approved in Denmark in 2006, about 500,000 young girls and women have been vaccinated – most as part of the national child vaccination program. Since 2009, the health authority Sundhedsstyrelsen has received 1,730 reports of side effects.

The sexual habits of Danish men explain why they are increasingly being diagnosed with HPV-caused oral cancer


Increasing numbers of Danish men are being diagnosed with HPV-caused oral cancer, DR reports. And a specialist believes there is a strong possibility it is linked to MouthAction.

According to the data from the University of Aarhus, 243 men were diagnosed with oral cancer due to HPV (transmitted human papillomaviruses) in 2013.

Mostly, it is their tonsils that are infected.

Watch your sexual habits
Pernille Lassen, a doctor at the Department of Clinical Medicine, believes sexual habits are partly to blame.

"The number of different sexual partners and particularly MouthAction, one could suspect, increase the risk of infection," Lassen told the broadcaster.

Research is still new
The Danish Cancer Society (Kræftens Bekæmpelse) warns that MouthAction increases the risk of HPV infection.

Although the research is still very new, the organisation suggests HPV can also be transmitted through mouth-to-mouth contact.

Not all HPV causes cancer
However, not everyone infected with HPV will develop cancer.

As Rigshospital explains on its website, most sexually active men and women will, at some point in their life, get infected by HPV without serious repercussions.
