Ashya King’s parents say he is cancer-free after proton therapy Brett and Naghmeh King, who were jailed after taking their five-year-old son abroad for treatment, say he has made ‘miracle’ recovery . The parents of five-year-old Ashya King, who were briefly jailed after taking him from a British hospital and fleeing abroad to seek treatment, have said he is now cancer-free. Brett and Naghmeh King, who prompted an international police hunt in August when they took Ashya from a Southampton hospital against doctors’ wishes, said their son has made a “miracle” recovery from brain cancer. The couple, from Southsea, Hants, were found in Spain, where they have a holiday home, and detained for three nights before a high court judge in London granted permission for them to seek proton beam therapy at a centre in Prague in the Czech Republic. They had feared that conventional radiotherapy, advocated by Ashya’s British doctors to treat his medulloblastoma following surgery, would “kill him or turn him into a vegetable”. On Monday they said they were absolutely delighted that a recent scan showed no sign of the tumour. “We have saved his life,” Brett King, 51, told the Sun newspaper, adding: “It justifies everything we went through. If we had left Ashya with the NHS we don’t think he would have survived.” Naghmeh King, 46, said: “We could not sleep before we got this news – now we are so full of hope for the future. We are jumping up and down with joy. It is a miracle we thought we would never see.” Ashya has been recovering with his family at their home in Marbella. Before being taken abroad he had undergone surgery to remove the tumour, and was left weak and unable to move. With doubts about the radiotherapy treatment offered at Southampton General hospital, his parents wanted proton beam therapy, which was not initially offered on the NHS although the health service later agreed to fund it. The treatment targets radiation directly at the tumour, avoiding healthy surrounding tissue, and is said to have a lower risk of side effects. Staff at the Proton Therapy Centre in Prague, where Ashya had been treated, said they were thrilled to hear the news. Jana Kulhankova, marketing director at the centre, said: “Ashya’s doctor told me last week that Ashya is doing so well that he is able to release him for rehabilitation. If the scans are showing that Ashya is cancer-free, as Mr King says, then we are thrilled. That is what we have worked for.” At the high court hearing last year doctors in Southampton had said proton beam therapy was unlikely to provide any benefit over standard radiotherapy but that they would not object to Ashya travelling to Prague for such treatment provided a treatment plan was agreed with the parents. Southampton University Hospital Trust said at the time that the chances of surviving the condition that Ashya has are about 70%-80% after five years with appropriate treatment. The health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has announced a £250m investment in two new proton beam therapy centres expected to open in London and Manchester in 2018. The NHS currently pays for those deemed appropriate for the therapy to go the United States for treatment. They must be assessed by a panel who may decide patients are not suitable if there is unlikely to be a clinical benefit from the treatment. More than 400 patents have been sent abroad since 2008, mostly children. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14ETQn9ZPwk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUM-10ZQsHI http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/mar/23/ashya-king-now-free-of-cancer-after-proton-therapy-say-parents

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVcgi4oeTns EU draws up plans for military attacks on Libya targets to stop migrant boats Britain drafting UN security council resolution that would authorise mission to hit vessels used by human traffickers for dash across Mediterranean https://i.guim.co.uk/media/w-620/h--/q-95/1bba0edd9beecba7e7de575e3dedf4ddf1475db5/0_0_3851_2312/1000.jpg A German frigate rescuing shipwrecked people from the Mediterranean, 130 nautical miles off the Italian island of Lampedusa. Photograph: PAO/Mittelmeer / HANDOUT/EPA European Union has drawn up plans for military attacks in Libya to try to curb the influx of migrants across the Mediterranean by targeting the trafficking networks. It is to launch a bid on Monday to secure a UN mandate for armed action in Libya’s territorial waters. Britain is drafting the UN security council resolution that would authorise the mission, said senior officials in Brussels. It would come under Italian command, have the participation of around 10 EU countries, including Britain, France, Spain, and Italy, and could also drag in Nato although there are no plans for initial alliance involvement. On Monday, Federica Mogherini, the EU’s chief foreign and security policy coordinator, is to brief the UN security council in New York on the plans for a “chapter seven” resolution authorising the use of force. The British draft is believed to call for the “use of all means to destroy the business model of the traffickers”. This would entail having EU vessels in Libyan territorial waters, including the Royal Navy flagship HMS Bulwark – currently in Malta – and deploying helicopter gunships to “neutralise” identified traffickers’ ships used to send tens of thousands of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East on the short but highly risky voyage from the Libyan coast to the shores of southern Italy. An MoD spokesperson said: “Working closely with Italy and EU partners, HMS Bulwark and three Royal Naval Merlin Helicopters are providing wide ranging search and rescue capabilities in the Mediterranean, already rescuing over 100 people. The UK is now considering how best to support the proposed EU mission to counter the smuggling networks.” Libyan militias, jihadi groups, and Islamic State affiliates believed to be in cahoots with the trafficking networks are said to have heavy artillery and anti-aircraft batteries deployed close to the coast. Attacks on EU vessels and aircraft could trigger an escalation and force Nato to get involved, said policymakers in Brussels. Following a visit to Beijing last week, Mogherini believes the Chinese will not block the mission at the security council. Her staff are also confident that Russia can be persuaded against wielding its security council veto despite the intense animosity between Moscow and the west over the Ukraine conflict. The Italian government, which is leading the drive for military action and which would command the mission which would be headquartered in Rome, said at the weekend that the Russians were “ready to cooperate”. Libya’s ambassador to the UN, Ibrahim Dabbashi, told the Associated Press that he had not been consulted on the plans and opposed them. Following intensive talks over the past week in Brussels, six EU states have committed to taking part, with several more expected to offer participation. All 28 member states are said in Brussels to support the proposed campaign. The plans are to be discussed by EU foreign ministers next week and then be put to an EU summit next month in response to the mass migration across the Mediterranean and the soaring rates of drownings. Separately from the push in New York for EU military action, Brussels is also calling for new and binding rules establishing a quota system of sharing refugees among the EU’s 28 countries. The European Commission is to unveil a new European “migration agenda” on Wednesday which contains the controversial and highly divisive proposals, pushed by Germany and rejected by Britain and east European countries. “The EU needs a permanent system for sharing the responsibility for large numbers of refugees and asylum seekers among member states,” says the commission proposal obtained by the Guardian. By the end of the year Brussels is to table new legislation “for a mandatory and automatically-triggered relocation system to distribute those in clear need of international protection within the EU when a mass influx emerges”. The proposals will lay bare deep divisions between national governments over immigration, with the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, backing the scheme and Britain and most countries of eastern Europe fiercely resisting Germany and Sweden between them take almost half of asylum-seekers in the EU and Berlin is predicting that the number this year could almost double to around 400,000 in Germany alone, two-thirds of the total number in the EU last year. “Some member states have already made a major contribution to [refugee] resettlement efforts. But others offer nothing,” the commission paper complains. It also insists that Europe has to open up legal avenues for migrants to enter the union safely, a notion that is strongly opposed by Theresa May, Britain’s home secretary. “Such vulnerable people cannot be left to resort to the criminal networks of smugglers and traffickers. There must be safe and legal ways for them to reach the EU,” the commission document says. On Friday, Viktor Orban, the prime minister of Hungary and a leading hardliner on immigration, described the commission proposals as “mad” and pledged to defy Brussels. “The European concept of ‘someone letting immigrants into their country’ and then ‘distributing’ them among the other memberstates is a mad and unfair idea,” he said. Brussels is proposing to invoke “emergency mechanisms” by the end of the month obliging the 28 countries to share the numbers of “persons in clear need of international protection and “to ensure a fair and balanced participation of all member states to this common effort. This step will be the precursor of a lasting solution.” The new blueprint, to be unveiled by commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos on Wednesday, includes a distribution “key” system based on various criteria from national wealth levels to unemployments rates to determine what proportion of refugees the 28 countries should each admit. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/may/10/eu-considers-military-attacks-on-targets-in-libya-to-stop-migrant-boats |
A UN tribunal has ordered the reinstatement of Swedish official Anders Kompass who was suspended for leaking a report to France about child abuse by French soldiers sent to the Central African Republic in 2014. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/hk/vullJtJZbG9zgpQnEW2fVO1cCI/www.thelocal.se/userdata/images/article/w468/468x280xec3ee75d9e0f5f4b02b48041cfe19be3ed3d2de6fa7653aa3df641925e521d9a.jpg.pagespeed.ic.i4sI1Cxre7tX82teElXM.jpg The ruling of the internal tribunal was delivered on Tuesday and Kompass “has thus resumed his service”, a spokesman for the UN human rights office told the AFP news wire. Aleksander Gabelic, chairman of NGO the United Nations Association of Sweden, welcomed the decision but slammed UN officials for their handling of the situation. "It is welcome that the UN is with immediate effect ordered to terminate the suspension. The decision shows that there are question marks surrounding the say in which UN leadership has managed this case," he told Swedish news wire TT late on Wednesday. Kompass will however continue to face an internal UN probe following accusations that he passed on confidential information, including the names of alleged victims, without getting the go-ahead of his superiors. “We remain extremely concerned that copies are circulating of the confidential unredacted preliminary notes of the interviews with the children,” the spokesman said. The UN tribunal said the fact that Kompass had resumed his job would not affect the investigation underway. Kompass, who works for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), was put on administrative leave with full pay on April 17th for having passed on the confidential report to France in July last year. According to the French defence ministry, soldiers dispatched to the chaos-ridden nation to restore order after a 2013 coup are implicated in a probe into the alleged sexual abuse of several children there who had begged for food. The abuse reportedly took place at a centre for displaced people near the airport of the Central African capital Bangui between December 2013 and June 2014. The accusations were serious enough for a secret French investigation to be launched in July last year but British newspaper The Guardian reported on the affair at the end of April. According to a copy of the UN tribunal's ruling, Kompass said he had received a copy of the report in mid-July and spoke to a French diplomat about it on July 23rd. He then said he had spoken to one of his bosses about this shortly afterwards and then passed on a copy of the report to French authorities on August 7th. The UN however rejects his version of events. The UN human rights office says it was only made aware of the leak on March 6th this year. Only one thing is clear so far – that Kompass was asked on March 12th to resign, something that he refused to do. He was suspended on April 17th and then Kompass sought an annulation of the order. http://www.thelocal.se/20150507/un-tribunal-lifts-swedish-whistleblowers-suspension |
Anti-immigration campaigners in Gullberg in southern Sweden are plotting to build a pig farm next to an asylum centre in a last-ditch effort to deter would-be Muslim immigrants, who might find the animals offensive, Plans for a new immigration centre in Gullberg have already been strongly opposed by local residents and on Wednesday it was reported that a group of campaigners had sent a letter to the Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket) pledging to breed pigs nearby in order to deter Muslims from seeking asylum in the town. The note, signed by what described itself as the "interest group for Gullberg's survival" said that it was trying to create a "probably impossible situation for some religious people, especially Muslims", according to Sveriges Radio. Local politician Henry Sandahl from Sweden's Countryside Party (Markbygdspartiet) told the broadcaster that he agreed with the sentiment of the letter. "You know that Muslims are not friends with pigs," he said. But Swedish religious experts have been quick to criticize the campaigners. "This is nonsense and shows just how very little they know about Islam," said Åke Sander, Professor of Psychology at the University of Gothenburg. "It is one thing when Muslims try to stay away from pork, alcohol or gambling but there is nothing [in the Koran] that says you cannot be near pigs. This is a last-ditch effort when they [the campaigners] have no arguments left," he told the TT news agency. Others turned to social media to voice their disgust at the campaign. Carl Göransson, a lawyer and former Moderate party politician suggested on Twitter that building "a gigantic rubbish dump" next to the asylum centre instead, designed to blow smelly winds in the direction of the angry residents. "Monstrous" and a "total fail", wrote Johan Arenius, a political press secretary for the Christian Democrat party based in Örebro in central Sweden. Sweden became the first European country in 2013 to grant automatic residency to Syrian refugees and has since seen asylum requests rise to record levels, which are still expected to reach about 90,000 in 2015. To cope with an increasing flow of refugees, the Swedish Migration Board announced in March that it was more than tripling the maximum number of residents allowed at asylum centres from 200 to 650. http://www.thelocal.se/20150506/pig-farm-plan-to-push-away-muslim-immigrants |

A 42-year-old British man, known in the media as “airport man” has been sentenced to ten months in jail and expulsion from Germany after years of conning rich women at airports into giving him money. Andrew Gradon always used the same trick, reports the Süddeutsche Zeitung. He would approach women in expensive-looking cars as they drove into the short stay car park. If the women looked like they were in a hurry, all the better. Gradon would then tell them he had missed his flight. Worse still, he had exceeded his weekly limit for his bank card usage. But all was not lost, he had found a cheap flight to London for €32 if they would be kind enough to help him out. Once he had shown his real passport, the women tended to believe him and offer the money. He would ask for their bank details so that he could send them the amount straight back. Then he would give them a fake email address in case anything went wrong with the transfer. The women never saw their money again. But by the time they had reported it to the police Gradon was already in another airport, playing the same trick. According to the Daily Mail the Englishman, who said in court he had lived life as a drifter in Europe for decades, covered 38 international airports with his scam. But he was finally caught when a 51-year-old woman from Munich reported him to the police. She had herself fallen for his trick. But when she explained the story to her husband who she was picking up, he immediately suspected she had been tricked and told her to look the name up on the internet. When she got home she saw Gradon's name come up on the search engine in a series of cases exactly like hers. Two days later the police caught him at Munich airport still working the same beat. New start The English conman has apparently decided to give up his life of crime. He will now be deported to England and the Süddeutsche Zeitung reports that he is to go and work for his brother's gardening company. He's getting too old for his life of crime, he told the Court. http://www.thelocal.de/20150430/british-airport-trickster-sentenced-in-munich |
Police in Gothenburg are searching for a man believed to have raped girl on her way to school in Gothenburg on Wednesday morning. The girl, 13, says she was raped by a man she did not recognize, who attacked her on her way to school at around 8.30 am. The alleged assault took place just a ten-minute walk away from the pupil's street. After managing to escape from her attacker and return to her home, the girl's mother alerted police at around 10am. A police spokesperson for the region, Björ Blixter told the TT news agency that a dog trained to sniff out sperm had been sent to search the surrounding area, while the girl was set to be examined in hospital. He added that officers were searching for "an unknown man who could be a few years older" than the young teenager, but did not currently have a suspect in mind. Reports of the apparent crime went viral in Sweden on Wednesday, with the story among the most shared on social media. Sweden has one of the highest rates of reported rape in Europe. In 2013, almost 5,900 cases were reported to Swedish police, according to the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention. The high figures are often attributed to greater gender equality in the Nordic nation, which encourages more victims to come forward, as well as a relatively wide definition of rape. http://www.thelocal.se/20150429/rapist-on-run-after-swedish-schoolgirl-attack |

Top Swede leaks secret African child rape report UPDATED: A senior Swedish aid worker has been suspended from his job at the United Nations for allegedly leaking an internal report claiming that French soldiers deployed in the Central African Republic have been abusing children. The damning United Nations report shown to the Guardian newspaper alleges that French soldiers deployed in Central African Republic (CAR) have been sexually abusing the very children they are supposed to be protecting. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/hk/vullJtJZbG9zgpQnEW2fVO1cCI/www.thelocal.se/userdata/images/article/w468/468x281x8605dde534842d56143829112d75b8fadd8d99ca100960ef5d8bbb245fa3d9a3.jpg.pagespeed.ic.IymuqrjulBIrE-M1QCbV.jpg Anders Kompass is accused of leaking secret documents. Photo: TT The UN report entitled Sexual Abuse on Children by International Armed Forces details the rape and sodomy of starving and homeless boys as young as nine, by French peacekeeping troops. The troops were supposed to be protecting the children at a centre for internally displaced people in the country’s capital Bangui. The report, stamped confidential on each page, was leaked to the Guardian newspaper and has led to the suspension of a senior UN aid worker, who is believed to be behind the leak. The aid worker named Anders Kompass, a Swedish national based in Geneva, is believed to have initially passed the report on to French authorities because the UN had proved powerless to stop the ongoing abuse. Kompass, who is registered at an address in Stockholm, has been involved in humanitarian work for more than 30 years. He was suspended from his post last week, according to The Guardian. The Guardian was given its copy of the internal report by Paula Donovan, from the organisation Aids Free World. Donovan is now demanding an independent inquiry into the abuse and the UN’s handling of the allegations. “The regular sex abuse by peacekeeping personnel uncovered here and the United Nations’ appalling disregard for victims are stomach-turning, but the awful truth is that this isn’t uncommon,” Donovan told The Guardian. France announced in March that it was reducing its troop numbers in the Central African Republic as it gradually hands over to a 8,500-strong UN peacekeeping force brought in to contain a deadly sectarian conflict. The Local has requested France’s ministry of defence response to the allegations in the report and has contacted Kompass for comment. http://www.thelocal.se/20150429/secret-african-child-rape-doc-leaked-by-top-swede |

If a homeless man stopped you on the street and offered you money, what would you do? That is the question being posed in a new YouTube video by entertainer Yousef Saleh Erakat, who disguised himself as a homeless man and found out that the answer was often less than kind. As a man in a suit and on his cell phone walks by in the beginning of the video, Erakat gets his attention. ‘I just want to be a helping hand today,’ he says, offering the man a $10 bill. The man holds his money for a second, astounded, before throwing it at Erakat. ‘I don’t need your fucking money, you asshole. I could fucking buy you.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZvYvOkqxA8 |

Dealing with the Side Effects of Chemotherapy and Radiation Since many people use a combination of conventional therapies with alternative, we have been asked to provide a list of ways to deal with the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Some suggestions include: Acupuncture can be used to help with nausea and pain THC (the active ingredient in marijuana) is useful for treating cancer pain, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, and poor appetite/wasting. It can be prescribed in pill form, while some people find relief from smoking marijuana. However, it is illegal in most states, but your doctor may be willing to prescribe it. For nausea, both ginger and caraway seed can often help. Caraway seed can be used to make a tea to be used after radiation treatment. To prevent nausea, hold a slice of fresh ginger in your mouth while undergoing therapy; if you become nauseous, chew on it. Fennel tea calms the stomach and prevents nausea. Acupuncture or an acupressure wrist band may also help. Pressure points on the wrists that can help reduce nausea. There is a special wrist band that uses electrical stimulation of the nerves in the wrist for this by Woodside Biomedical Inc. in Carlsbad, CA at (888)668-6648 FREE. However, do not use it if you have a pacemaker. For pain or burning in the stomach, mix one heaping teaspoon of kudzu or arrowroot in six ounces of water or licorice tea. Use imagery, visualization and other mind-body techniques to lessen the side effects and stresses of the cancer treatment. Alpha Lipoic Acid, an antioxidant, can help with nerve death-neuropathy Exercise can help with fatigue, nausea, anxiety, and a variety of other ill effects Banana peels can help with planters warts. Cover the warts with banana peels for 7 days and the warts will dry up. Soy Unique is a fermented soy product that can help enhance the immune system and help increase blood counts. It is easily digested and is very nutritious, making it great for those who have trouble eating. It is available at http://www.naha.theshoppe.com/soyunique.htm. Dr. Whitaker recommends a product called Defience PhytoTherapy, a powdered supplement formulated by oncologist Mitch Gaynor, M.D., of the Strang Cancer Prevention Center in New York City, specifically for patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. It contains milk thistle, grapefruit seed extract, N-acetyl-cysteine and other agents that aid in detoxification, as well as soy isoflavones, other immune enhancers, and plant extracts. Patients state that it gives them more energy. Ganodema can be used as a supplement during chemotherapy or radiotherapy to reduce side-effects such as fatigue, loss of appetite, hair loss, bone marrow suppression and risk of infection. Propax - www.propax.com - Helps with fatigue associated with chemotherapy Spirulina helps to reduce the side effects of radiation therapy, including weight loss Other immune builders, like colostrum, ImmunoPower, astragalus, MGM3, IP6, and Transfer Factor can also help with side effects by keeping the immune system going without interfering with the treatments. Chinese herbal remedies can be helpful. Go to http://acupuncture.com/Herbology/Chemo.htm for suggestions For hair loss, consider EVP3 from Janbe. Vitamin E prior to beginning chemo can also help. Ice caps (ice cap, cold cap, caps) sometimes retard hair loss from chemotherapy. After the chemo and radiation is over, check with your doctor about adding antioxidants to your diet to build your system back up. (See note about antioxidants below.) Some people use a zapper during treatments to help keep their system going Hydrazine sulfate is an anti-cachexia drug which acts to reverse the metabolic processes of debilitation and weight loss in cancer. For constipation or gas, enzymes such as Beano, probiotics, sena, buckthorn, epsom salts, or high fiber can help, but be sure to check with your physician. Walking also helps. For anemia - B12, beet juice, and shark liver oil can help. For insomnia - try melatonin. For pain - try acupuncture, biofeedback, or hypnosis. http://www.cancure.org/12-links-page/91-dealing-with-the-side-effects-of-chemotherapy-and-radiation |
