Two bombs in Christian areas of the Iraqi capital Baghdad have killed at least 35 people, officials have said.
One device exploded near a Catholic church when worshippers were leaving a Christmas Day service, killing 24. Another bomb ripped through a market, killing 11 more people.
Christian leaders denied that the attacks had targeted worshippers.
Iraq’s ancient Christian community has more than halved in recent years, from an estimated population of 900,000.
Both blasts happened in the Dora area of Baghdad.
The bomb outside St John’s Catholic church exploded in a parked car, shortly after a blast at an outdoor market in the mainly Christian al-Athorien district.
No-one has yet admitted carrying out the attacks, which came as Christmas Day services were held across Iraq.
During a service at St Joseph Chaldean church in the Karrada area of the capital, Father Saad Seroub called for peace and security for all Iraqis.
‘Feeding terrorism’
Churches have been targeted across the country since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003.
An attack by gunmen in 2010 on the Catholic Cathedral in Baghdad left more than 50 people dead.
A surge in sectarian violence this year has claimed the lives of more than 7,000 civilians in Iraq, the highest annual number of fatalities since 2008.
Most of the attacks have targeted Shia civilians and the smaller Sunni population.
The bloodshed escalated in April, after the army raided a Sunni anti-government protest camp.
The conflict in Syria has also prompted a spike in attacks, many involving al-Qaeda in Iraq.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki told the BBC on Sunday that the Syrian crisis was “feeding terrorism in the region”.

Worried by their continued shelter in public schools in the Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State, displaced Bakassi children have appealed to the Federal Government to provide them with zinc, cement, nails, rods and other necessary materials to enable them build their own houses.
They made their demands on Monday when Senator Florence Ita-Giwa donated food items and cash to the displaced people, who are taking refuge at St. Mark Primary School, Akwa Ikot Eyo Edem; and Government Secondary School, Akwa Ikot Eyo Edem, in New Bakassi Local Government Area.
The children are among the 4, 000 displaced persons who were chased out of their settlements by Cameroonian Gendarmes in March this year.
The other demands made by the included fishing boats and other fishing materials; provision of buses to ease transportation and take care of emergency situations; employment of Bakassi indigenes in federal establishments, including the military and paramilitary outfits.
In her address, Ita-Giwa urged the displaced persons to continue to be law-abiding, saying steps were being taken to cause the Federal Government to look into their plight.
Ita-Giwa noted that whether the Federal Government liked it or not, it was indebted to the people of Bakassi for being responsible for their plight.
She said, ‘’This country is obliged to resettle Bakassi people. The Green Tree Agreement must be respected. The struggle must be sustained just like the late Nelson Mandela did in South Africa. Nigeria government must resettle Bakassi people because they never went to the International Court of Justice at The Hague, Netherlands. They have been displaced for no fault of theirs.
‘’These people are now living in public schools, which should not be so. In the day the schools are classrooms and night bedrooms. This is bad. They sleep in classrooms that have no doors, no windows exposed to mosquito bites and consequent malaria infection and other diseases.’

The Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, condemned the approval of sacking recommendation by the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation.

The committee had recommended sacking the embattled Minister over her decision to order the purchase of two armoured cars for N255m. The committee noted thatsuch asum wasfar above what the Minister could approve without the consent of the National Assembly.

The House of Representative approved the recommendation by its aviation committee on December 19, 2013, Thursday.

Mrs. Oduah expressed her reactions in a statement by her Special Assistant, Media, Mr. Joe Obi. The Minister wondered why the House endorsed wholesale, the recommendations of its committee that investigated the bulletproof cars purchased by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

"We are shocked and disappointed that in spite of the deluge of representations and evidences provided by the Aviation Minister and all invited stakeholders on the matter, the House would reach conclusions that have only confirmed that there was a hidden agenda in the entire exercise from the beginning.

"We recall vividly the underhand tactics of the House when, 24 long hours before the report of the investigation was due to be laid before the plenary, 'certified true copies' were handed over to online and traditional media.

"The motive of those who handed the document to unauthorised persons has fully manifested in the adoption of the recommendations that have no reflection to the public hearing conducted in the full glare of Nigerians and the media," the statement said.

ARGENTINE soccer legend, Diego Armando Maradona has written off Nigeria and other group opponents and tipped Albiceleste to defeat the Super Eagles in their Group F match on June 25 in Porto allegre and go on to win the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Argentina, Nigeria, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran have been drawn in Group F, with the Lionel Messi-captained side hugely tipped to secure the top spot in what observers see as a relatively easy group, when compared with others.

In their three previous confrontations with Argentina at the World Cup, the Eagles ended on the losing side and despite a resurgence in the attacking play of the African champions, Maradona, insisted that the current South American giants have enough firepower to see off all their prospective opponents in Brazil.

Speaking in an interview with TyC Sports in Argentina, Maradona said “I do not see any team in group F beating us. We are too strong for them. We are going to win our third World Cup. It is going to happen again in Brazil. Argentina will be champions of the world, but they are going to have to fight against the ‘morochos’ [Brazil]. They are very tough.. The success of 1986 will be repeated and it will be in Brazil.”

Taking a look at the other top teams that can give Argentina a good run for their money, Maradona said “Germany and Holland are in good shape, Italy not so much and Spain are getting bored of their own tactics. They go forward and forward, but cannot convert.”

Meanwhile, in order to get the team in top shape for the World Cup, football officials in Argentina confirmed last night that Argentina will play a friendly match against Slovenia on June 1, which is expected to be the team’s last match before their first Group match against Bosnia-Herze

The management of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, Ikeja , Lagos, western Nigeria this morning discharged patients from the hospital following the five-day nationwide warning strike embarked upon by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA). The warning strike started yesterday and will end on Sunday. Doctors at the teaching hospital,PMNEWSgathered, have decided to join their colleagues nationwide to protest Federal Government’s failure to address the association’s demands. All the patients hurriedly discharged were told to come back for treatment on Sunday. The mother of a discharged patient, Yetunde IFeoluwa, told a source outside the hospital that she was asked to go home by the officials of the hospital because doctors were on strike. “ I have an appointment with the doctor today for special shoes for my child who cannot walk. But on getting to the hospital I was told to go back and return on Sunday because doctors are on strike. I have been carrying him on my back since he was born. The doctor said that I should come today for the shoes but I was turned back at the gate by officials of the hospital,” she stated. Another patient, Mopelola Otunoye, who was accompanied by her two daughters lamented the pain she was going through. “I will now have to go back in pains. They are sending me back home for another five days. The Federal Government should please try to meet the demands of the doctors so that we will not die at home before the strike is called of,” she pleaded. At the diabetic department of the hospital, our correspondent saw a woman supported by her son trying to get the attention of a staff but no attention was paid to her. “We will have to go to a private hospital since we were asked to go. We have no choice because my mother is in serious pains,” the son said.
