According to Leadership Newspaper, the passengers, who had arrived in Nigeria aboard Delta Airline from US, were waiting for baggage reclaim but the 4 who had just arrived from the United States of America where the temperature is much cooler, got overwhelmed by the heat in the arrival area and collapsed. A source close to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) told LEADERSHIP Weekend that the cooling system at the airport was not working when the incident happened and that it might be due to the current remodelling of the airport. It was learnt that two of the passengers were rushed to an undisclosed hospital in an ambulance belonging to the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) In his reaction to the development, the general manager, public affairs of FAAN, Yakubu Dati, said the situation was exaggerated by online reports. Another FAAN official contacted who preferred anonymity said the unhealthy situation at the arrival hall of the airport was not new to most air travellers who had had to contend with it as they passed through immigration and baggage collection. “For those coming from Europe it is like coming from an extremely cold environment to an extremely hot environment and passengers have to sweat it out as they go through immigration formalities and then through the tortuous collection of their in luggage,” he said. |

Five Thousand and twenty five new lawyers were on Thursday delivered to the nation following their call to the Nigerian Bar. In the ceremony which held at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, the Chief Justice of Nigeria CJN, Justice Mariam Aloma Muhktar counseled the new lawyers to observe the code of ethics for lawyers in carrying out their duties as ministers in the temple of justice. She reminded the new wigs that they had an obligation to the court and the society and noted that they have a duty as officers of the court to assist the court in the administration of justice and to observe court decorum and etiquette. “As lawyers, honour comes first and fees second; the profession has a code of honour which it requires its members to be obedient and it is a code which demands on the part of every lawyer, strict probity and the faithful discharge of his manifold duties which includes, duties to the community, duties to the public, duties to the client, duties to his professional colleagues and above all duties to the court.” The CJN urged the new lawyers to be punctual in all court appearances and whenever possible, should give prompt notice to the court and other counsel in the case of any circumstances requiring their tardiness or absence. She further called on them to always conduct their case in logical sequence, thus assisting the court to follow the case with ease adding that they must also show seriousness of purpose, frankness and honesty. The Director General of the Nigerian Law School, Dr. Tahir Mamman, on his part, charged the new wigs to be good ambassadors of the law profession by distinguishing themselves in conduct within and outside the court. http://www.nigerianeye.com/2013/11/nigeria-calls-5025-lawyers-to-bar.html |

Here are some photos from the All Progressives Congress (APC) congress march taking place at INEC HQ, Abuja. The APC says the protest to INEC headquarters is to register its disapproval of the Commission’s string of failures in conducting recent elections, including the ‘inconclusive’ Anambra Governorship poll. They aredemanding the cancellation of Anambra gubernatorial poll. The protesters were stopped by a detachment heavily armed policemen who prevented them from reaching the INEC offices. Protesters include former Lagos governor, Bola Tinubu, former military head of state, Muhammadu Buhari, and Chief Bisi Akande. The Central Bank of Nigeria has said it will start printing the naira in paper notes in 2014. It signed a deal in 2006 with Australia’s Securency International to print lower more-circulated units of the naira in polymer, while higher denominations were kept in paper form. But six years after and following allegations that the manufacturer had bribed foreign officials to secure contracts, including in Nigeria, the CBN said it was being forced to reverse the policy. A report by AFP on Tuesday quoted the spokesman for the CBN, Mr. Ugochukwu Okoroafor, as saying, “Polymer has been on a test run since 2007. This explains why we did not go the whole hog by printing all the notes in polymer. “We only used polymer for N5, N10, N20 and N50, while N100, N200, N500 and N1,000 are in paper form. We soon discovered that the [polymer] notes easily fade out because of our peculiar hot climate in Nigeria… making them look tattered when in use over time.” Earlier experiments indicated that the polymer-based notes, which are in use in 23 countries around the world, including Australia, could last longer than traditional cotton-paper notes. But the CBN said there had been a public outcry about the poorer quality of some of the new currency in circulation. Securency International was reported to have supplied 1.9 billion of its guardian brand polymer-based notes to Nigeria between 2006 and 2008. In the wake of the bribery claims, the Reserve Bank of Australia sold its 50 per cent stake in the firm. Innovia Security, which bought out Securency International earlier this year, said it did not comment on clients or their business but added that a number of countries with hot and humid climates used their product. “We have had no issues of premature ink wear or colour fading in these markets,” a spokesperson said in an e-mailed statement. The report said Nigeria, with a predominantly cash-based economy, was looking to increase people’s use of electronic payment methods such as credit cards, online trading and introducing cash-point machines in a bid to try to reduce the amount individuals could carry around. However, there are concerns that switching back to paper notes is a sign of a lack of a coherent policy. “My concern is that Nigeria is fond of policy somersaults,” said a former banker, Mr. Moruf Akamo. He also said, “What becomes of the initial investment in the polymer technology, considering that the notes have been in circulation for only six years after their adoption in 2007?” Akamo said the CBN should have done more research to ascertain the feasibility of polymer notes before starting the project. “Why is Nigeria going back and forth? It’s time our policy makers got their acts together and do what is right for this country,” he said. A treasury manager at a commercial bank in Lagos, Mr. Yemi Adegbola, advised the central bank against spending money to print paper notes, which could degrade quickly with daily handling and the tropical climate. “The trend worldwide is to embrace polymer. I wonder why Nigeria’s case is different?” he added, claiming that polymer was less susceptible to forgery. “It’s not easy to fake polymer notes like paper notes,” he said. http://www.nigerianeye.com/2013/11/cbn-to-revert-n5-n10-n20-n50-polymer.html?m=1 |
