It was gathered that a member of the community, High Chief Babatunde Balogun caught the mother of seven when she was trying to dispose the baby at about 5 p.m. on Wednesday. When questioned on the content of the sack, she claimed she was coming from the market where she bought some household items. However, on a closer look, Balogun discovered that the sack contained a dead day old baby the woman allegedly had just delivered. He then called the attention of the other residents. Neighbours toldP.M Newsthat after Mujidat’s husband known as Baba Mushin died about three years ago, they have seen men visiting her residence, the house built by her late husband. When asked if she planned to throw away the baby because of an alleged paternity mess, she denied, claiming that a welder turned block maker near her residence was responsible for the pregnancy that resulted in the birth of the dead baby she was caught with. She claimed she took delivery of the baby by herself because she found it easy and therefore did not go to any hospital or sought anybody’s help. At about 9 p.m yesterday whenP.M.NEWSvisited the area, residents of the area were still milling around the residence of the woman. Officials of the Community Development Association, CDA, in the area later accompanied the woman and her sack of baby to the Isheri-Oshun Police Division where the matter was reported. At the time of this report, the woman was still being interrogated. SOURCE: PM NEWS |

The police in Lagos State have commenced investigation into how a nine-year-old girl died, after sustaining injuries caused by alleged consistent rape. According to police authorities, the deceased was raped over five times, by a 14-year-old student, Onyi Adimabua, in the Ikorodu area of the state. The father of the deceased, Simeon Jigo, told reporters that Onyi is the son of the proprietor of the school his daughter attended. He said his daughter opened up about the rape when she started having medical problems. The 77-year-old man said his daughter died on October 3, 2013. He said, “Up until my daughter’s death, she was a pupil of Fulfilled Greenland School, Ikorodu, and she was in primary three. One day, she came home and started complaining of pains around her vagina, stomach area. We rushed her to Ikorodu General Hospital. “A doctor checked her and after conducting some tests on her, told us that my daughter had sustained medical complications due to forced sexual intercourse. I was alarmed by this; so, I had a private discussion with my daughter. “She told me that it was her school proprietor’s son, Onyi, that had been raping her. The boy had threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone about it.” The indigene of Ondo State revealed that after initial treatments, he took his daughter to Arogbo in Ondo State to be taken care of but her condition continued to deteriorate. A few days after the troubled father travelled to Ondo State, Onyi, accompanied by his parents, also travelled to Ondo State, to apologise to Jigo’s family. The girl, however, was said to have died that very day. “On getting to the house where my daughter was, we discovered that she was dead. Onyi confessed that he had been raping my daughter prior to her death,’ Jigo said. NE learnt that after the girl’s demise, irate youths in the area attempted to lynch the 14-year-old boy. The bereaved father was said to have intervened and reported the matter to a nearby police station, where the teenager was held for safe keeping. The next morning, Onyi and his parents travelled back to Lagos. The alleged rapist’s parents, in company with a chief in Ikorodu, reportedly visited Jigo when he returned to Lagos. The group were said to have pleaded that the bereaved father should not pursue the case but he refused. Jigo said, “I went to the Ikorodu Police station to report the case but was surprised when the policemen on duty said I should not write any statement. They only told me to write down my telephone number and said they would call me later. “After waiting for many days without any call, I wrote a petition and the matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.” It was however learnt that Onyi had been taken to his father’s hometown in Delta State thereby stalling police investigation. The teenager’s parents, however described the incident as the handiwork of the devil. The 14-year-old boy’s father, Andrew Adimabua, said, “I trained that boy in the way of the Lord and expected so much from him. He has confessed to the act; there is nothing to hide. He told me that he learnt about sex by watching blue (pornographic) films. “We are not hiding him and we will cooperate with the police. On the day the little girl died, he was beaten up and made to stay in the rain for hours. As a result, he contracted pneumonia so we sent him home for treatment. When he recovers, he’ll be taken to the police for questioning.” Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone, expressed shock at the development. Braide said Onyi would be re-arrested in the course of investigation. “It is appalling that a teenager could indulge in such act. The matter is under investigation and the culprit will be re-arrested.” http://www.nigerianeye.com/2013/10/boy-14-rapes-nine-year-old-girl-to-death.html?m=1 |

But she has been a rarity in the various photgraphs relayed home by the presidency. We have been trying to solve the riddle about her whereabouts and we can now report that she visited the various religious sites that the President visited, except that she chose to stay far away from the camera. But she can’t really hide too well. In the photos below, we make bold to say that Stella is the lady in the white hat, far away from the camera lenses. Against the backdrop of deteriorating Federal roads nationwide, the Federal Government may have decided to reintroduce tolling on its highways, to raise money to fix the roads. A policy document on the reintroduction of tolling may be forwarded to the Federal Executive Council by Works Minister, Mike Onolememen, for approval and implementation. The policy document is known as Green Paper: Federal Roads and Bridges Tolling Policy for Nigeria.’ The Director, Public, Private Partnership, Federal Ministry of Works, Babatunde Ekusinmi, who disclosed this to newsmen noted that “Nigeria had operated some toll roads for several years, but they were abandoned in 2004, due mainly to legal disputes, revenue leakages and unmet maintenance of the tolled roads. With tolling once again being considered as a policy option, Nigeria has the advantage that it can assess successfully and execute tolling to develop, build, manage and maintain roads”. The Green Paper proposal claimed that tolling policy would foster the improvement of Nigerian roads and bridges. “Tolling would generate the revenue needed to recover cost to the private investor of the construction, rehabilitation, financing, maintenance and operation of the road and bridge, and to achieve reasonable returns for that investor; the Federal Government would enter into toll concessions only where such concessions are financially viable and forecast traffic volume is high (unless there are strong economic or social grounds). The Paper also said the Federal Government would permit tolling only for specific roads and bridges where the related investment results in significant improvements for road users and toll payers; the Federal Government would ensure that tolls are ring-fenced and dedicated to defraying the costs of rehabilitation, upgrading, maintenance and operation of such roads; the Federal Government would introduce mandatory public consultations prior to tolling any road or bridge in Nigeria, to provide users with critical information in advance of the tolling being introduced. The Federal Government would give preference to tolling by established and reputable private firms; toll rates would distinguish between vehicle classes to reflect the cost of providing road space to a class of vehicles and their relative usage impact on road pavements; tolls should be fixed during the length of a concession, subject only to periodic increases which are agreed in the contract and are based on an adjustment formula which takes account of inflation and other variables. Ekusinmi said it would be necessary to empower concessionaires to appoint officers with powers to stop vehicles and verify toll payment, and such powers would be clearly specified and circumscribed to avoid potential for abuse. He said the Federal Government would speedily implement institutional reforms to clarify responsibilities for implementing and overseeing road and bridge tolling; the Federal Government would ensure it has sufficient capacity to oversee the implementation of toll concessions – initially through the Ministry of Works and Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA, and subsequently through the establishment of the proposed Federal Roads Authority, FRA. He emphasised that the application of Public-Private Partnerships, PPPs, with the use of tolling, provides Nigeria with an excellent strategy to improve its roads and bridges for the benefit of Nigeria’s economy, businesses and communities. Projects, he said were already progressing rapidly and that “it is essential that the policy framework is in place to support and facilitate such progress. A tolling policy will establish the enabling environment in which tolling is applied appropriately, and investors and the public can be confident in the future. “The intent of the Tolling Policy Green Paper is clear. Tolling and private investment should be used to achieve substantial improvements to Nigerian roads and bridges. The Green Paper objective is to improve the proposed policy, and the Federal Ministry of Works looks forward to constructive engagement, feedback and comments from all stakeholders,” he said. http://www.nigerianeye.com/2013/10/fg-to-reintroduce-toll-gates-to-raise.html?m=1 |

House of Rep Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, has said if there is a need to make extra budgetary provisions for the Federal Government to resolve the lingering face-off between it and the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU), the House would do so. “Let me use this opportunity to appeal to both the Executive arm and the authorities of ASUU to quickly resolve the problem. If there is need for any appropriation, the House will expeditiously assent to it in the interest of our students and the nation.” The Speaker spoke in Abuja when he received a briefing on the update of the ASUU strike from the Aminu Suleiman-led House Committee on Education. The House mandated the Education committee to investigate the face-off by highlighting the areas of conflict and proffer solutions. Tambuwal urged all parties to consider the interest of the students and the educational future of the nation. http://www.olufamous.com/2013/10/tambuwal-says-house-will-approve-money.html?m=1 |
Some members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect on Thursday launched a ferocious attack on the Misebiri Police Station, ‘B’ Division, Damaturu, the Yobe State Capital. Investigations revealed that the Boko Haram members gained access to the police station through the bush surrounding the city. Unconfirmed source said the attack led to the death of some people on both sides. A military source said majority of those killed were Boko Haram members. It was learnt that the insurgents avoided the military base at the entrance into Damaturu from Borno and three other military checkpoints along the Damaturu-Maiduguri Highway by passing through bush parts to carry out the attack, which was still going on as at the time of filing this report (9.35pm). It was further learnt that the Boko Haram members had made several attempts to penetrate the Yobe State capital, Damaturu, but were frustrated by the Special Forces. A source, who confided in our correspondent, said that the gun battle between the combined team of the police and troops of the Nigerian Army started at about 6.30pm and was still on as at 9.35pm. The attack took security operatives by surprise as they were not expecting the insurgents to attack the police station which had not witnessed such an attack before. It was learnt that security operatives were kept on their toes and were scampering to defend the various formations within the city. A source said that heavy artillery fire was heard in the fighting between the insurgents and the Special Forces. As at 9.35pm, security sources said that the insurgents were still engaging troops and the police in a shootout. When our correspondent contacted the spokesman of the Joint Task Force in Yobe, Lt. Lazarus Eli, he said that he did not have details of the attack. He said that he was waiting to get the details from those who went for the operation before responding to inquiries from journalists. However, he said that the incident occurred by NNPC Mega Station by Red Bricks and not inside Damaturu town. He said that he was not aware of the attack on the said police station but could only speak when he had been briefed by those who went for the operation. “I don’t have details, our troops are not back yet, I am waiting to get details before I can speak on this issue to anybody. “This incident occurred at the outskirt, Boko Haram members have not entered Damaturu now, I think it happened by the mega station, by Red Bricks. “Unless I have information from the troops who went there, I cannot comment on it,” he said. http://www.nigerianeye.com/2013/10/many-feared-dead-as-boko-haram-attacks.html?m=1 |

Some family members of the late Biafran leaders and Ikemba Nnewi, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has challenged the Nigerian Ambassador to Spain, Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu to show proof that she was legally married to the deceased. This was the fresh twist introduced into current legal battle rocking the family of the late Ikemba of Nnewi over sharing of his estate. In a 19-paragraph statement of defence brought by the eight defendants, through their counsel, George Uwechue, they denied that Bianca, who instituted the action on behaif of her two children, ever married to the late Biafran leader. Listed as defendants in the suit instituted by Afamefuna and Nwachukwu, through their mother, are Ojukwu Transport Limited, Prof. Joseph Ojukwu, Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, Lotanna Putalora Ojukwu and Dr. Patrick Ojukwu. Others include Mr. Edward Ojukwu, Lota Akajiora Ojukwu and Mrs. Massey Udegbe (doing business under Massey Udegbe and Company). The claimants, in suit No. LD/1539/2012, prayed the court to declare that they were entitled to the possession and occupation of the property known as No 29 Oyinkan Abayomi Street in Ikoyi, Lagos until the harmonisation of the management and administration of the assets of the first defendant (OTL). At the resumed hearing of the matter yesterday, the absence of counsel to Bianca and her children forced the court to adjourn the suit till December 10 for adoption of written addresses. Afamefuna and Nwachukwu had, through their lawyer, Chris Ezugwu, prayed the court to declare as illegal the threat of forceful ejection from 29, Oyinkan Abayomi Street by the defendants. They also urged the court to declare that they were entitled to possess the following property: No. 13, Hawksworth Road, Ikoyi (now known as No. 13, Ojora Road); No. 32A, Commercial Avenue, Yaba, Lagos; No. 30, Gerard Road, Ikoyi, Lagos; No. 30, McPherson Avenue, Ikoyi. Bianca’s children stated that throughout the period their father was struggling to retrieve the property from the government, the second to seventh defendants “never played any role in the struggle nor contributed financially or otherwise to the realisation of the struggle.” Besides, the claimant is asking for an order of court restraining the defendants, their agents or privies from interfering with the claimants’ possession and control of the properties. In their statement of defence, the 1st to 7th defendants, through their lawyer, George Uwechue, averred that the subscribers of the memorandum of association of Ojukwu Transport Limited (1st defendant) at incorporation in 1952 were L. P. Ojukwu and Betram Chukwuemeka Obi, adding that the late Ojukwu and one Prof. Joseph Ojukwu (2nd defendant) were later appointed as directors in 1953. They stated that Ojukwu thereafter ceased to be a director of the company, prior to the Nigerian civil war and was reappointed as a director on December 16, 2005, while the 3rd and 4th defendants were appointed directors in 1954 and 2005 respectively. They added that the claimants’ statement of claim contained tissues of lies and distorted facts. Besides, they stated that Ojukwu moved to Enugu State and had not lived at any of the company’s property as alleged by the claimant. They averred: “The property belongs to the first defendant (the company). The fact is that the claimants’ mother felt she could hold onto the first defendant’s properties. For over 12 years prior to his death, the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu moved to Enugu and since then had not lived at the first defendant’s property as alleged by the claimants.” They challenged Bianca’s children to show proof of any such agreement, which their late father had, from the first defendant, for him to control and/or manage the properties of the first defendant. A little girl who was treated for HIV shortly after birth still shows no sign of infection at age three, suggesting her apparent cure was not a fluke, US researchers said Wednesday. The story of the first child known to have been cured of HIV through early treatment with powerful doses of antiretroviral drugs — what researchers call “sustained remission” rather than a cure — was initially announced in March when she was two and a half. A handful of HIV-infected adults around the world have been described in medical literature as newly free of the disease, most famously Timothy Brown, also known as “the Berlin patient,” who was given a bone marrow transplant for leukemia that wiped out his HIV as well. But no easy method has emerged to eradicate the three-decade-old human immunodeficiency virus that infects 34 million people globally and is responsible for 1.8 million deaths each year. The girl’s updated case report in the New England Journal of Medicine also sought to answer questions raised by outside experts over whether she was ever really infected, by describing DNA and RNA tests that were positive for HIV just over a day after birth. The child was given antiretroviral drugs until the age of age 18 months and, after a year and half without treatment, no sign of the disease has returned, the article said. “Our findings suggest that this child’s remission is not a mere fluke but the likely result of aggressive and very early therapy that may have prevented the virus from taking a hold in the child’s immune cells,” said lead author Deborah Persaud, a virologist and pediatric HIV expert at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. The child’s mother gave birth to her prematurely, about a month early, and had not received any prenatal care. She was unaware that she was HIV positive until she was tested at the Mississippi hospital where she delivered. The newborn also tested positive for HIV, and the high level found in her blood suggested that she had become infected with human immunodeficiency virus while in the womb, researchers said. She also showed signs of HIV in blood tests at 19 days of age, data that “support the authors’ perspective that the infant was truly infected,” said an accompanying editorial by Scott Hammer, a leading HIV scientists at Columbia University Medical Center. “The big question, of course, is, ‘Is the child cured of HIV infection?’ The best answer at this moment is a definitive ‘maybe,’” he wrote. A longer term follow up of the child is needed, he said, cautioning that her case may be “unique,” even as it shows a proof of principle that may lead to more rigorous studies down the road. The child was given antiretroviral drugs for the first 15-18 months of her life, when she was lost to follow up. Her mother brought her back to doctors at 23 months of age, saying she had last given her anti-HIV medication at age 18 months. “This happened almost by accident,” said Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “It wasn’t that the doctor said ‘let’s stop the therapy.’ This is not recommended for home use,” he told AFP. Tests at 23 months were negative for HIV, and by the time the child reached 30 months of age, tests still showed no sign of HIV or HIV antibodies, said the study. “We’re thrilled that the child remains off medication and has no detectable virus replicating,” said pediatrician Hannah Gay of the University of Mississippi Medical Center. “We’ve continued to follow the child, obviously, and she continues to do very well,” said Gay, who first treated her. “There is no sign of the return of HIV, and we will continue to follow her for the long term.” The girl’s medical team believes the reason for her success was the early intervention, and they hope to investigate whether treating other infected infants within hours or days of birth could show similar outcomes. A US-government funded study is set to begin in low and middle income countries in 2014 that would test the method in HIV-infected newborns on a wider scale, Fauci said. http://www.nigerianeye.com/2013/10/us-baby-cured-of-aids.html?m=1 |
MINISTER of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah, has taken the lobby to retain her job to Israel, where she plans to see President Goodluck Jonathan. The minister, who was said to have found it difficult to see the President in Abuja since the scandal broke out, was said to have also sent many emissaries to speak with the President on the matter. Though official sources said Oduah was in Israel to sign Bilateral services agreement on behalf of Nigeria with Israel. It was gathered that she would use the meeting to inform the President that those mounting pressure on him to sack her were his political enemies who did not want him to contest the presidential election in 2015. A source close to Oduah said, “The minister would use this argument to sway the President to her side. “She would inform the President not to allow his enemies triumph over him and should also know that if those enemies succeed in pushing her out, then many of the trusted aides of the President would be the next target.” It was also gathered that the meeting would also afford the minister the opportunity to seek audience with the National Security Adviser to the President, Sambo Dasuki, who is one of the members of the administrative panel set up by the President to investigate the minister. Sambo is also in Israel. The minister played an important role during the 2011 presidential campaign by overseeing Neighbour-to-Neighbour, which was considered to be one of the potent propaganda arms of President Jonathan campaign organisation was then. She is said to have been also pencilled down to play a more important role in 2015 for the President. Apart from this, the minister was said to have marshalled out some points concerning the purchase of the controversial vehicles. One of which was that the documents of the vehicles did not bear her name. A statement signed by the spokesperson for the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authorities, Mr. Yakubu Datti on Tuesday confirmed this. Datti said, “No mention is made of the fact that, of all the documents paraded for the vehicles, none mentioned the name of the Minister of Aviation. But the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Rueben Abati said, Oduah decided to travel to Israel ahead of the President rather than waiting to be part of his entourage, because presidential delegation was usually divided into segments. He said in most of the trips, relevant ministers were expected to travel ahead in order to do the ground works for the President and brief him on arrival. He said, “Presidential delegation is divided into segments. The President has a main body team that travels with him. Some people can travel ahead of him, it is not everybody that can travel with him. How many people can the presidential aircraft carry? “That the minister travelled ahead of him is not an issue. Ministers usually go ahead of the President to do ground work, if there are meetings to be done before the President’s arrival, they would have done them. That is how it is done. “In many of these trips, there will be pre-event meetings that ministers would have attended so that when the President comes, they will brief him. This is not an issue.” Abati also said that the Presidency did not grant the NCAA any approval to procure the controversial N255m vehicles for the embattled minister. In an interview with one of our corespondents, Abati, dared the NCAA to produce the approval if indeed such existed. “That is not true. If they have a presidential approval, let them produce it. People are just trying to politicise the issue. The President has already set up a panel to investigate. That panel has the responsibility to look at all issues that may come up and all issues that have already come up. “I think people should stop speculating. We should allow that panel to do its job. We should not politicise its work. What they can remain assured of is that the President is interested in the matter,” Abati said. http://www.nigerianeye.com/2013/10/aviation-minister-to-lobby-jonathan-in.html?m=1 |
