#1: Alfred Wetzler
Alfred Wetzler not only survived the Holocaust, but he also escaped from the Auschwitz Death Camp itself along with his friend, Rudolf Vrba, Wetzler escaped by hiding in a pile of wooden planks stacked outside the camp perimeter.

They waited there for three days without food or water, while the SS guards searched for him. When the search was finally called off, the two men escaped into the night. Pursued by a German patrol up a mountain side, hunted by dogs and soldiers alike, they were helped by strangers to get to the border and then cross into Slovakia.

Finally having escaped, the two of them filed a report on Auschwitz, this led to Allied bombing, which halted the deportation of thousands of people to concentration camps. This is absolutely incredible, because it's estimated that their bravery and the information that they provided saved the lives of over 120,000 people and I thought it was impressive, that I got out of bed early this morning, I need to raise my expectations. grin grin

#2: Pascal Payet
A career thief, Payet was sentenced to 30 years in a French prison for committing murder during one of his heists in 1997. In 2001, he carried out his first escape ever. Four masked accomplices hijacked a helicopter and then flew Payet from prison. After being caught again, he staged a second escape, this time in 2003, when another helicopter flew in to rescue him from the roof of the prison, then he was caught again three weeks later.

Following these attempts, he was put under increased surveillance while in prison. Gee, I wonder why. But despite this, in 2007, he escaped again, masked accomplices again hijacked another helicopter and then rescued Payet, then he was caught again, okay, seriously, this is just getting repetitive like they should just probably lock this guy in a box and just like open the cell door a little bit, throw some food in and then just lock it, just, otherwise he's gonna get out.

#3: Choi Gap-Bok
After being arrested for robbery in 2012, Korean criminal, Choi Gap-Bok successfully escaped imprisonment using yoga, "Oh yes, slippery like a snake, can't get to me."

As an experienced practitioner of yoga, Choi Gap-Bok noticed that his detention cell had a fatal flaw, which could be exploited using his physical talents. After just five days in the cell, Gap-Bok greased himself up with ointment and began to squeeze himself through a small slot at the bottom of the cell used for food trays, aren't those slots like this big? How skinny was this guy? Stretching his body out, he was able to escape his cell in just over half a minute, that's 30 seconds for those of you who can't do math.

He then climbed out of a window and vanished into the nearby mountains, presumably naked. Although he was eventually caught, he still maintains his innocence, though some say that claim is quite a stretch.

#4: Frank Abagnale.
If you've seen the film, Catch Me If You Can, then you already know quite a bit about Frank Abagnale. After posing as a doctor, a lawyer and an airline pilot, he spent some time in a French and then Swedish prison. When being extradited to the United States to face his crimes as a conman, Abagnale escaped his captors, just before their plane took off, Abagnale claims he did this by climbing through the plane's toilet plumbing and then escaping through a hatch at the landing gear, talk about a crappy escape.

Now while there's some debate as to how plausible this is, he most definitely did escape a second time from a detention center by posing as an agent of the prison, bizarrely he made it out and was finally caught for good later. He then assisted the United States government in investigating scam artists and later set up a business showing banks how to identify fraudsters.

#5: The Catalpa Rescue
Between 1865 and 1867, the British Empire arrested anyone supporting Irish Independence. At that time, 62 of these prisoners were sent to the prisons in Australia, from which they were likely to never return, but that all changed when a group of mercenaries used an American whaling ship called The Catalpa to carry out a daring rescue.

They dropped anchor near the prison and headed to the shore in smaller boats, there a group of the Irish prisoners were working outside of the prison, while most of the guards were watching an annual boat race. "Ah yes, look at these boats on the water, "it's wonderful, it is. "Who's watching the prisoners? "Oh, bollocks."

The prisoners leapt into the Catalpa's boats and made their way back to the ship. After a fierce storm, which damaged many of the boats, evading the British Navy and being fired upon, the Catalpa finally made it to New York four months later, four months on the sea?

Uh, oh God, I get car sick and the ocean is even worse, I can't even think about it, moving on.

#6: Colditz
During World War II, the Nazi regime declared the prison at Colditz to be escape-proof, but that didn't stop people from trying. Sitting on top of a large cliff, several Allied soldiers managed to escape from the notorious camp, but it was the story of John William Best, which is the most striking.

John Best was a British Royal Air Force pilot, who tried several times to escape from Colditz, even building a huge glider, which he hoped to use to jump from the cliff side. After being caught several times, Best came up with a novel solution and because of it, he was referred to as a ghost prisoner.

For over one year, he hid inside the castle, fooling guards into thinking he had escaped, he hid under floorboards and in closets, but eventually he had to come out of the closet, hm-mm, to escape, to actually get out, you know what I mean. Although he was caught after a year, he finally walked free in April of 1945, when Colditz was liberated, whoa, that was the ultimate game of hide and go seek, "Where are you, Best, we know you're in here. "Adolf, you want to come help? "Okay, let's go."

#7: El Chapo
ElChapo was the notorious Mexican druglord, who has escaped captivity three times. His most audacious escape was in 2015, when he escaped through a 1.6 kilometer long tunnel, which led from his cell to freedom, but this was no ordinary tunnel, it had ventilation, artificial light and had been made form high quality construction materials. Inside the tunnel, prison guards discovered a motorbike, which was used either to aid El Chapo's escape or to bring goods to him from outside the prison. The escape route proved to be one of the most well-constructed and elaborate in history.

A manhunt soon followed, but El Chapo wasn't captured until 2016, when Mexican police and military pursued him relentlessly, even chasing him through another 1.5 kilometer escape tunnel, that he used to initially evade capture. I know El Chapo was a brilliant drug kingpin and whatnot, but he apparently was also half mole man, get away from everybody, digging a tunnel.

#8: Alcatraz
The 1962 escape from Alcatraz is one of the most hotly debated escape stories of all time. Inmates, Clarence Anglin, John Anglin and Frank Morris took six months to prepare.

Using fake heads, that they had made out of soap wax, they made it appear as though they were still in bed. Meanwhile, they squeezed through a ventilation duct, which they had widened using improvised tools, camouflaging the hole with cardboard and paint. Then on the roof, they had used 50 raincoats to create a makeshift life raft, stitching them together and sealing them using steam from a nearby pipe, these guys were like the James Bonds of the prison world.

Oh, but it gets better, because using an accordion, they inflated the raft and then on the night of June 11th took to the treacherous waters surrounding the prison. The only thing is that no one actually knows what happened to them, so they either drowned or they made it, but either way, they made it out of the prison.

#9: John Gerard
On October 4th, 1597, a Jesuit priest carried out one of the greatest escapes in history, his name was John Gerard and he was secretly practicing as a priest in England at the time, when Catholicism had been all but banned.

Captured and tortured in 1594, three years later he made his escape. At that time, he was held in the notorious Tower of London. Assisted by members of a secret Catholic group, the priest was able to climb across the tower moat using a long rope, given the high strength required and the fact that John Gerard's hands had been mangled during torture, his determination to pull himself across the rope is legendary.

Later he continued his work, until finally escaping England disguised as a footman for a Spanish ambassador.

Okay, that takes real strength, because let's be honest, how many times have you stubbed your toe and just fallen to the ground being like, "Oh, Mommy, the world's over!" It's just we're a soft generation. angry angry

#10 Stalag Luft III
Immortalized by the film, The Great Escape, prisoners of war held by the Nazis during World War II carried out one of the most audacious escape plans in history. Imprisoned at the Stalag Luft III POW Camp, an estimated 600 Allied soldiers were involved.

The compound itself was heavily guarded, surrounded by walls of barbed wire and the German prison guards would shoot anyone, who tried to escape. It was for this reason that the Allied prisoners dug three complex tunnels underneath the camp. The tunnel used to escape was 102 meters in length and of the 220 planned escapees, only 76 made it out, before the prison guards realized. Oh, 102 meters of tunnel dug by hand? Yeah, that is just way too much effort, I know they're trying to survive and whatnot, but like I get lazy just going to the fridge so I would have died grin grin

If you've ever seen a prison escape movie or TV show, you know they do a pretty good job at depicting how difficult it really is to escape, but not all escapes are from jail, well, I mean, some are, but others are people escaping in real life, whether they're running from the law, persecution or something else, the following are the most amazing cases ever recorded. #1: Big Rip
Most cosmologists agree that the universe began with a gigantic explosion known as the Big Bang, but some believe that this event will inevitably lead to the end of the universe itself, known as the Big Rip.

This theory states that the universe will eventually literally tear itself apart. The idea is that, following the Big Bang, the universe began expanding. This expansion is still accelerating due to an elusive force known as dark energy.

Those who support the Big Rip hypothesis believe that this expansion will eventually stretch the universe to an infinite point, causing everything from galaxies to stars, even subatomic particles themselves to suddenly tear apart. But hopefully this doesn't happen for a very long time. For two reasons:
a) Because I want to live cheesy

b) I've got a lot of errands to do today. grin grin

#2: Galactic Cannibalism

No, this isn't aliens eating themselves. Let me explain.

Galactic cannibalism is one of the most dangerous and terrifying events in the known universe. Galaxies contain billions of stars and planets, and some may even have supermassive black holes at their center. This creates an immense amount of gravitational pull. When the gravitational attraction of two galaxies takes effect, a collision occurs which rips entire stars and planetary systems out of their orbit.

Usually the larger galaxy absorbs either a section of, or the entire smaller galaxy. And scientists predict that this is going to happen in the next five years cheesy *laughing maniacally* No, no, I'm joking, I'm joking. It's going to take four billions years, when our galaxy will collide with the Andromeda galaxy, with a 12% chance that our entire solar system would be ejected from the newly-formed galaxy out to wherever.

Good thing that by then Earth won't even be habitable due to our sun expanding. Every cloud has a silver lining, I guess?

#3: Gamma Rays

Gamma ray bursts are one of the most energetic explosions in the entire universe. If one of them hit Earth, the consequences would be ... What's the word?

Deadly

They're caused by a rapidly rotating, high-mass star collapsing in on itself. This creates a neutron star, quirk star or black hole and releases a beam of radiation in the process. These bursts contain more energy in just a few seconds than our sun will release across its estimated 10-billion-year-long life.

If one of these bursts is directed at Earth, it would deplete our ozone and expose us to harmful cosmic radiation. Now, the good news is is that scientists believe that it is unlikely than an event like this will happen. But some also believe that a gamma ray burst was responsible for the Ordovician extinction around 455 million years ago.

In case you don't know what that is, that event wiped out nearly 85% of marine species. So that's bad news for fishermen.

#4: Rogue Black Holes.

Black holes are among the most fascinating objects in the cosmos. But one theory suggests that their destructive power could be waiting just around the corner.

Hey, hey there. I'm a black hole. I'm destructive. cheesy

Known as Rogue Black Holes, these gigantic objects are capable of strolling into a star system and swallowing it up. Basically like an all you can eat planet buffet.

They're produced when a star collapses in on itself, creating a point in space where gravity is so strong, even light can't escape from it. What's worse is that they can't be observed directly, and we can only detect them when we see their gravitational influence. While a supermassive black hole can be spotted moving around a distant galaxy, there actually is one that is much closer to home. Known only as the Bullet, this probable rogue black hole is moving against the rotation of our Milky Way galaxy and could destroy any system it encounters.

Oh, don't worry, if you haven't lost sleep yet based on my impending doom, we got three more to go.

#5: Supernova
A Supernova is a devastatingly dangerous space explosion. They occur at the end of a massive star's lifespan, when a titanic explosion takes place, creating a light source which can easily outshine most of the stars around it.

These events have been recorded in the night sky many times, especially with Kepler's Supernova in 1604, visible to the naked eye even though it was 20,000 light years away. When the explosion occurs, the dying star expels much of its matter at 10% the speed of light. This gigantic shockwave has the potential to destroy basically anything in its path.

Hey everybody, get ready to die. You better watch out. grin

Now, while these events are rare, some people believe that dim white dwarf stars could explode in this way, which could happen suddenly with almost no warning. But luckily, no such candidates have been found close to Earth, yet. So, just saying, you might want to cross your fingers that our interstellar neighborhood is a safe one.

Education / Re: 10 Most Dangerous Things Found In Space by Conspiracist: 11:55am On Feb 18, 2019
#6: High-Velocity Stars
High-velocity stars are some of the most dangerous objects in the universe. They move faster than the stars in their local neighborhood, and so they have potential to collide with other star systems. Like an interstellar game of bumper cars, except everyone dies. There are three types of high-velocity stars. These are runaway stars, halo stars, and hyper-velocity stars. Of these three, it's hyper-velocity stars which are the most dangerous. And also have the coolest name. These stars can have velocities which are so high that they can escape the gravitational pull of an entire galaxy.

Interestingly, no one is quite sure how they even form, although some theories suggest that each hyper-velocity star previously orbited a second star, which then exploded and accelerated the surviving star to hyper-velocity. If a hyper-velocity star entered our star system, it could pull planets into its fiery embrace.

It's so romantic. smiley cheesy grin

#7: Interstellar Planets
We commonly think of planets as masses of rock or gas which orbit a star. But there are planets out there without a home, and if one of them wandered into a star system, it could be disastrous. Hey, just a planet looking for a home. Oh, what is that, Earth? I'm comin' for ya.

These interstellar planets spin through space without orbiting a star. It's believed this occurs when a planet either flung out of a planetary system by gravitational forces or when a planet forms from debris outside of a stellar region.

Some of these planets may even be failed stars which didn't reach enough mass to ignite. It's possible that an interstellar planet could pass close enough to a star system to be pulled into it.

For example, if a new planet were suddenly mushed into our star system, basically there would just be constant planetary collisions. And it's not Like there's just a few of them. It's estimated that there are billions of these worlds out there as we speak, wandering alone through the cosmos.

Yeah, that's not good. Do interstellar restraining orders exist? undecided undecided

#8: Coronal Ejections
Coronal ejections from stars have the potential to cripple technology and even burn off parts of the planet's atmosphere. In case you didn't know, we need that. tongue

While they're actually very common, these ejections just need to be the correct strength and trajectory to cause mayhem for anything caught in their path. It's assumed that, just like our own sun, all stars produce such events, and so this would be a hazard to every star system in the universe.

Coronal ejections usually occur during a sun flare, which is a sudden increase in energy output on the surface of a star. Though some flares do not result in coronal ejections, when they do the star spews out hot, radiated clouds of plasm. When this shockwave of plasma reaches a planet, it can cause geomagnetic storms which tears electrons from electronic devices and may even expose any present life to cosmic radiation.

And I know the comics make that sound cool, like you're gonna turn into Bruce Banner, the Hulk, but that's most likely not gonna happen. lipsrsealed You're more likely just gonna have hands growing out your face. cheesy grin grin

#9 Asteroids
Asteroids are rocky objects which orbit a star. And like comets, they can crash into planets, causing devastation. For the most part, asteroids tend to be fragments of rock formed during the early stages of a star system. Otherwise, they can be the debris left over from large collisions involving planets or moons, or even the remnants of a larger rock body torn apart by gravitational forces.

In some rare cases, they may have even originated from other star systems and were fired into our solar system during a supernova or other high-energy event. Through gravitational attraction, asteroids can be put on a crash course with a planet.

Oh, Conspiracist, that would never happen. That's only in the movies. cheesy

Actually, it's happened to Earth before. And scientists believe that there are so many asteroids out there, it's not a matter of if but a matter of when this happens again.

Where's Bruce Willis when you need him? angry

#10: Comets
Comets continually orbit around star systems, but these naturally-occurring propelled masses of ice and rock are very dangerous. From studying comets in our own star system, we know that they are icy bodies which, when warmed by the rays of our sun, release gas and dust, creating a huge tail behind them.

This jet-like process propels these objects around the solar system, but because comets propel themselves while being pulled around by the gravitational forces of the solar system, their orbits are eccentric and not always easily calculated.

There are well over 5,000 comets in our solar system with thousands more potentially out there just flying around. Some of these comets have nuclei measuring up to 100 kilometers. Literally, if one of these ever hit our planet, the energy released would wipe out, um, all of us. There's something to think about while you go to bed tonight. grin

Hey there, how are ya? You're lookin' out of this world. wink

You get the pun?

Space is filled with an unimaginably large number of things; things that benefit us, like sunshine from the sun, and gravity, which keeps us in orbit and basically prevents us from flying into the abyss. But there are plenty more things that have been found in space that are very dangerous to human life, things that are real threats that, should we ever come across them, would be a big problem for us.

#8: Swearing In Public

Everybody at some point swears, in fact studies suggest that swearing is a healthy and natural way to relieve anger. But believe it or not, if other people hear you, you just broke the law, in many places including the United States and Canada, the criminal code states that if swearing causes other people in the vicinity to take notice, then it is indeed an offense that can be met with fines, and yes, even jail time, it falls under creating a public disturbance or disturbing the peace, so be careful.

#7: Using Fake Names Online

If you've never done this, you haven't been on the internet. Everyone at some point has entered fake info online for something, whether it's an online registration form, a Facebook name or some gaming site. Ah, and again steps in the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. That act forbids anyone from using a false name for signing up for anything, and believe it or not, doing so constitutes hacking and is punishable for up to 20 years in prison.

Mhm, that's right, you wanna think again about calling yourself Tony Flamingo? But hey, you're thinking nobody's actually gonna go to jail for something like that, right? Nope, in 2010, a prison guard named Matthew Laqua was arrested for creating a fake Facebook profile for his boss. And arrests like this are becoming much more common as cyber bullying and fraud continues to grow, so don't risk it.

#6 Betting With Your Friends

If you've ever been hanging with your friends and you all start placing bets, say on a game like football or basketball, you may have actually broken the law.

According to the Illegal Gambling Act in the US, if there were five or more people involved in a total of #720,000 or more, it constitutes illegal gambling and is punishable for up to 10 years in prison, now you likely haven't bet that much, so you're probably okay, but if you ever had a gamble night with dudes, there's a chance that that amount may have been involved.

Now don't worry, you're not going to prison, unless someone snitch on you, watch out for that new guy with the mustache, you can't trust anyone with a mustache. lipsrsealed lipsrsealed

Just kidding grin

#5: Using A Car Air Freshener
That air freshener hanging from your rear view mirror making your whole ride smell like pine trees and bird songs is actually illegal, according to many cities, states and highway patrol agencies, anything that hangs to impede your view of your windshield, even a small amount, can lead to an accident and therefore is against the law.

Yes this includes most air fresheners, hanging dice, sunglasses or anything else that restricts your field of vision, even though it might seem completely silly, it's been proven that even a tree style air freshener can completely block out someone on a motorcycle if it sits at the right angle.
