The Serving Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Lagos, Pastor Tunde Bakare, says former President Olusegun Obasanjo is guilty of the sundry allegations he levelled against President Goodluck Jonathan in his (Obasanjo) recent letter to the President. Bakare, who said this during his sermon in his church in Lagos on Sunday, noted that the former President’s letter to Jonathan painted a portrait of Obasanjo himself while he was in office as the nation’s helmsman. Obasanjo had written an 18-page letter to Jonathan, calling the President’s attention to critical issues in the polity, which he believed could plunge the nation into chaos if not urgently addressed before they degenerated. Jonathan had responded to the ex-President letter, where he tried to justify his actions and policies while calling Obasanjo to produce the evidence to back up his claims, especially the former President’s assertion that Jonathan was raising about 1,000 strong snipers against political opponents. Speaking on ‘The parable of letters and the cacophony of voices,’ Bakare wondered why the ex-president could “turn around” to blame Jonathan for any of his actions when Obasanjo “imposed him and Yar’Adua” on the nation. Admitting that Obasanjo marshalled his arguments well in the letter, the cleric faulted the morality of the letter, saying Obasanjo was as guilty of the allegations contained in his letter just as the person the letter was addressed to. Bakare, who is the Convener, Save Nigeria Group, said, “Last Sunday, I told you that the President’s (Jonathan) reply was on the way; and expectedly, few hours later, it was already on the airwaves. Well, Obasanjo marshalled his arguments well in his letter. But, that is not the point. The point is how can Obasanjo turn around to accuse Jonathan of wrongdoing when they are both guilty of the same offence? “Was it not the same Obasanjo that imposed (the late Umaru) Yar’Adua and Jonathan on the PDP and ensure that they emerged winners in the Presidential election? How can the same person be accusing Jonathan of wrongdoing? Besides, Obasanjo’s letter is just about himself; that is, he has written a letter that tells his own story.” The cleric believed that the nation’s problems had its roots in the fact that “we have low people in high places.” He added, “Shehu Shagari already decided that he wanted to be a Senator in the Second Republic; he had obtained and submitted his form for a senatorial seat. Then, they dragged him to be the President. Obasanjo was brought out of prison broke, but was sponsored and given money to become the President. In the same vein, Yar’Adua was about completing his two terms of eight years (as the Katsina State governor) and he just wanted to return to the classroom as a lecturer but they brought him to become the President, hiding his ailment from the rest of us. “So, you have people, who ordinarily do not have any business in governance occupying sensitive offices. What do you want them to do? That is the roots of our problem.” Bakare disclosed that he got cow gifts from the Presidency and the Ogun State Government during the Christmas, but appealed to the President to face the task of providing basic necessities of life for Nigerians rather than sending cow gifts. “I was prevailed upon not to return the gifts like the late Gani Fawehinmi did to (Buba) Marwa, when Marwa was the military governor of Lagos State. I don’t eat such meat. That does not mean that I will not tell the President to face his work and do it well. We need good roads; not cow. We need water, power supply; not cow meat,” he said. |
President Goodluck Jonathan has described the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Protectorates in 1914 as an act of God. Jonathan, who joined the faithful at the Apostolic Faith Church, Jabi in Abuja, for the last Sunday service of the year, however, identified lack of unity and love as the greatest problem facing Nigeria. He likened the nation’s challenges to those of the Israelites when they were about to move out of Egypt to the Promised Land. The President said, “As a nation, we have our challenges. Anytime I look at the history of Nigeria and the challenges we face, I remember a part of the old testament in the Bible that talks about the Israelites when they decided to move out of Egypt to the Promised Land. We have something quite similar. “As you are getting closer to the promised land, you meet more obstacles and thank God for the sermon we have heard here today(Sunday). Even the songs showed that the greatest problem we have are lack of unity and love. “Nigeria was amalgamated by our colonial masters in 1914. By January 1 next year, Nigeria will be 100 years . I totally agree with the minister that it was not by chance that we are one as a nation, it was ordained by God. “If God didn’t will it that way and at that point, the North and South would not have come together. The details of the North and South coming together make Nigeria a very great country. “I used to say that Nigeria is great not because of its oil. We have countries that produce more oil than Nigeria but nobody talks about them. “We have countries that have multi-billion dollars in their reserves and nobody talks about them but here we are, just talking about $40bn in our reserves , yet the biggest and smallest countries talk about Nigeria. Why? It is Because of the diversity from the North to the South, the human and natural resources, the potential and the population that we have. “ So, Nigeria is a country that has a special blessing from God. It is therefore left to us to appreciate God and continue to pray for his intervention for this country to continue to be great.” Jonathan again promised to bequeath a different Nigeria to the next generation. He said his administration was committed to working hard to overcome barriers that had to do with religious or ethnic differences. The President said it was also when such barriers were crossed that Nigerian children would enjoy a better future. He said, “I promise our children that we are totally committed to making sure that they meet a different Nigeria. We will collectively work hard to overcome our barriers. “Immediately we cross the barriers and we begin to believe that we are all Nigerians and we are committed to the development of this country, our children will surely meet a better Nigeria. We will try our best but this is not the time to reel out what we are not doing, otherwise people will think I am here to campaign. “But I assure this congregation, and indeed all Nigerians, that by the grace of God and your support, I am where I am today from nowhere. Any Nigerian child can also be where I am. “I come from the smallest state in this country and even in my state (Bayelsa), my community is one of the smallest. Within my community in the state, mine is one of the smallest , but I am here today as President by the grace of God. “That is the type of Nigeria we want to create; a Nigeria where you can get what you want if you work hard, not a Nigeria where you know somebody that knows somebody that will take you to somebody. “We will work with you to help you to get to wherever you want to go.” The President also said he was now wary of what he says in public because of the fear of being misinterpreted . He said, “Because for those of us in politics, these days are not the best days to make speeches because any statement we make, people look at how to paint it. The next day when you read the newspapers, you start doubting if that is what you said. “So any statement we make is always used against us but I am quite pleased to be here with you today(Sunday) to worship with you. In his sermon titled “Living worthy of great mercies, great faithfulness of God,” Rev. Bayo Adeniran said Nigeria would be great again if its citizens learnt to forsake their evil ways and returned to God just like the people of Nineveh in the Bible did. He said, “If Nigeria believes in God like the people of Nineveh, God will heal Nigeria. The swiftness of God shall visit this country. We are so bothered about external corruption, but there is so much corruption in the heart.” “The nation starts with the individual and the family. Return to God and God will answer your prayers. Nigeria shall not die, it will live if we return to God.” |

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, says the Federal Government has created 1.6 million jobs in the past 12 months. Of this number, 432,021 jobs were created during the first quarter of the year. This, she added, represented about 11.69 per cent increase over the number of jobs created during the fourth quarter of 2012. Okonjo-Iweala made the disclosure during her presentation at an interactive session with the private sector, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent. She stated, “We have created 1.6 million jobs in the past 12 months. 431,021 jobs were created in the first quarter of 2013, showing an upward trend in job creation and an increase of 11.69 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2012.” The minister said a key government programme focused on direct job creation was the Community Service Scheme, which aims to engage 320,000 youths in labour intensive work such as construction and rehabilitation of social and economic infrastructure. According to her, about 120,000 people have been employed so far under the scheme, which is being anchored by the Subsidy Re-Investment Programme. She also listed the Graduate Internship Scheme, which aims to attach 50,000 graduates to competent firms to enhance skills development towards employability. She noted that 4,000 graduates had emerged so far under the scheme. According to Okonjo-Iweala, who spoke on the “Economy’s macroeconomic performance for 2013 and the outlook for 2014,” the Gross Domestic Product growth is expected at 6.75 per cent at the end of 2013, up from 6.61 per cent in 2012. She recalled that the GDP growth in the first three quarters of 2013 stood at 6.56 per cent, 6.18 per cent and 6.81 per cent respectively. The minister noted that economic growth during the year had continued to be driven by the non-oil sector. However, she lamented that the rate of economic growth as well as the quality of growth had been very slow, underscoring the need for improvement. “Nigeria needs to grow faster in the job-creating sectors at between nine to10 per cent per annum to create the number of jobs needed to substantially reduce poverty,” she said, adding, “GDP rebasing, which is currently in progress, could increase GDP substantially but its impact on growth rates is not yet certain.” She further noted, “Economic growth needs to be more inclusive as inequality is high and rising in Nigeria; this needs to be reversed.” In order to achieve this, the minister said the Federal Government would in 2014 make efforts to ‘remove structural bottlenecks’ in sectors as power, ports, rail, roads, communication technology (broadband) and aviation. Also, there will be an improvement in the business climate and efforts will be made to reduce bureaucracy and fight corruption. She gave the assurance that the government would in 2014 enact supportive polices for sectoral growth in agriculture, housing, manufacturing, creative industries, solid minerals, oil and gas and petrochemicals, among others. “We will also build social safety nets for vulnerable women, children, and the disabled to address regional disparities,” she added. |

Lagos State Government has retired a school principal, the vice-principal and seven other senior teachers from the state’s civil service. The teachers were accused of involving in examination malpractice during the last May/June West African School Certificate Examination. The officers, who were staff members of Lagos Senior Model College, Igbogbo, Ikorodu, were found guilty of aiding and abetting their students to cheat during the writing of Mathematics paper. A statement on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Lateef Ibirogba, explained that the government acted on the findings by WAEC officials who had investigated the allegation that the teachers deliberately abandoned the examination hall on the fateful day to give “the students they were supposed to invigilate an opportunity to cheat.” Part of the evidence used to nail the officers included a recorded tape that confirmed their culpability. The statement read in part, “The affected officers are Mr. S. O Amure, School Principal on GL 17; Mr. V. A Joseph, the Vice-Principal on GL 16; Mr K.E Ogunleye, the Mathematics teacher on GL 15; Mr. A. I Banjoko, the Examination supervisor on GL 12; Mrs. L. D Akinterinwa on GL 15; Mr. A. O Araba on GL 15; Mr. V. O Towoshe on GL 14; Mr. S.I Oladipupo and Assistant Examination Supervisor on GL 08.” All the officials were equally found culpable of offences ranging from dereliction of duty, failure to monitor the examination, directly assisting in solving questions, “abandoning the hall and classrooms where they were supposed to invigilate, thereby condoning examination malpractices and failure to carryout thorough supervision of examination.” Ibirogba said, “This decision will serve as deterrent to other officers in the state civil service, as the government will not condone any act of fraud in the system.”- |
Sincere 9gerian: I'm not like those desperate and frustrated fools who try to arrogate to themselves the power to speak for the whole world. The Peoples Democratic Party has asked a Federal High Court, Abuja, to commit to prison the New PDP officials led by Alhaji Kawu Baraje for alleged contempt of court. The PDP under Alhaji Bamanga Tukur also urged the court to jail the Baraje-led faction's National Secretary, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Dr. Sam Jaja. The three had sued Tukur; the Deputy National Chairman, Uche Secondus; National Women Leader, Dr. Kema Chikwe; and National Publicity Olisah Metuh. The Tukur faction in response to the Baraje faction's court action, filed the contempt suit against the three on Wednesday. Counsel for Tukur's PDP, Mr. Ajibola Oluyede, who made the court papers available to journalists at a briefing in Lagos, said he was directed by the faction to file the contempt suit.. Oluyede also added that he had also filed a preliminary objection against the suit filed by the Baraje faction at a Lagos High Court, Ikeja. Baraje and his faction had filed the suit seeking an order to restrain Tukur and other members of his executive council from further parading themselves as officials of the PDP. But the Tukur faction, through its newly-filed contempt suit, is seeking to jail Baraje, Oyinlola and Jaja for a minimum of one year each for allegedly violating a judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja. The judgment was said to have been delivered on January 11, 2013 in a suit tagged FHC/ABJ/504/2013. The contempt suit was filed on behalf of the Tukur faction by Chief Adedayo Dayo and Semiu Sodipo, who had initiated the suit which its judgment was allegedly flouted by the Baraje group. Dayo and Sodipo had filed the suit on which judgment was delivered on January 11, for themselves and the Executive Committee of the party in Ogun State. The alleged contemnors were said to have violated the judgment of the Federal High Court, which nullified Oyinlola's candidacy as a nominee of the South-West Zonal Chapter of the PDP. The Tukur's PDP said Oyinlola, "with guilty knowledge" "appointed and declared" himself as the National Secretary of the PDP "for the purpose of rendering the judgment of the Federal High Court nugatory." The faction alleged that Oyinlola conspired with Baraje and Jaja to take actions in violation of the court's judgment and by so doing, "obstructed the administration of justice." The applicants said the alleged contemnors acted to subvert the appeal filed by Oyinlola against the Federal High Court's judgment by taking it upon themselves to overrule the judgment and appoint Oyinlola to the office. "The alleged contemnors have, since the delivery of the said judgment, committed additional acts of criminal contempt by conspiring to flout the purpose of the court as pronounced in its said judgment and the authority of the court in so pronouncing," the applicants said. |
