PoliticsOhakim Gave Me $2.3m In Ghana-Must-Go Bag – Witness by contactlenz(op): 7:37am On May 05, 2016
A Federal High Court in Abuja heard on Wednesday how a former Imo State governor, Ikedi Ohakim allegedly bought a property in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with about $2.3m cash concealed in a “Ghana-Must-Go” bag.
A prosecution witness, Abu Sule, who was cross-examined by Ohakim’s lawyer, Awa Kalu (SAN), said he collected $2.29m cash in “Ghana-Must-Go” bag from Ohakim, with which he assisted the former governor to buy a property in highbrow Asokoro area of the FCT.

He explained that Ohakim handed the $2.29m (an equivalent of N270m) to him in $100 bills at night sometimes in November 2008, for onward transfer to the then owner of the property, Alhaji Isah Maidabino, the next day.

Sule, an architect and Managing Director of Tweenex Consociates H.D Limited, said he kept the money in the boot of his car overnight before handing it over to Maidabino, now a director in the office of the Head of Service of the Federation.

“The money ($2.29m) was given to me by the defendant. It was given to me in a ‘Ghana-Must-Go’ bag and that was how I transported it. It was in $100 bills. I didn’t count the money and he (Ohakim) didn’t request for counting because we trusted each other. But I counted it along with Alhaji Maidabino.

“I did not issue a receipt because a receipt was not demanded. I was sent an errand and I delivered it.

“I carried the money to a bank in Maitama in Unity Bank. I handed over the money to Alhaji Maidabino at Unity Bank.

“Alhaji Maidabino issued deed of assignment and sale agreement to me. He did not acknowledge the receipt of the sum in writing.

“I didn’t pay the money into any account. I didn’t see Alhaji Maidabino pay that sum into any account. I did not witness any transaction.

“What Alhaji did with the money, I don’t know. But he handed over the title documents of the property to me,” Sule said.

PoliticsAbia State Commercialised Kidnappings In Nigeria – Senator Akpabio by contactlenz(op): 7:26am On May 05, 2016
Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday at the Senate plenary gave a highlight into how Abia State pioneered the commercialization of kidnappings in Nigeria.
He stated this while contributing to the debate on Joint Committee Report on Police Affairs, National Security and Intelligence which was monitored by DAILY POST in Abuja.

According to the former Governor, Kidnapping of expatriates in the Niger Delta in those days were purposely to protest for harm done to the environment by multinational oil companies and government’s lack of political will to address the trend, but in misplacement of purposes, the trend began to spread to other places.

Akpabio explained that in Abia State when former governor, Theodore Orji held sway, kidnappers would build a form of bungalow and dug gallows underneath where they kept victims until ransom was paid.

“In Abia state then, they will build a bungalow with gallows underneath, and when someone was kidnapped, they will keep the victim there until ransom was paid even with Police guarding the compound,”Akpabio emphasized.

While calling for capital punishments for the perpetrators, he lamented the current three year maximum imprisonment was so inadequate that can never deter them.

“Currently, the maximum penalty is three years imprisonment for kidnappers, and this cannot deter them while I want to call for stringent penalty to punish them,” Akpabio maintained.

PoliticsSaraki Dozes Off In The Dock As Corruption Trial Takes Its Toll (Photo) by contactlenz(op): 7:30am On Apr 20, 2016
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, now relieves himself of the psychological stress associated with his ongoing trial before the Code of Conduct Tribunal by intermittently dozing off inside the dock as his trial proceeded.

The testimony of the first prosecution witness, Michael Wetkas, revealing how Saraki looted the treasury of Kwara state between 2003 and 2011 when he served as the governor of the state, is enough source of emotional trouble for the number three citizen of the globe's most populous black nation.

The long hours of the sitting of the tribunal since his full blown trial started at the court last week is another laborious task that stretches Mr. Saraki beyond the limit.

This explains ‎why the Senate President often nap while sitting cross-legged in the Code of Conduct Tribunal's dock during the proceedings of Monday and Tuesday.

It is hard for most members of the audience to notice how Saraki slipped in and out of the power nap mode during proceedings because he is seated facing members of the panel, backing the majority of the audience.

Reporters and tribunal officials on the far left side of the courtroom have seen Mr. Saraki doze off on Monday and Tuesday during his trial.

The trend started on Monday but became more pronounced on Tuesday.

Saraki ‎would usually come back alive with his eyes red after some minutes or seconds of napping.
On several occasions on Tuesday, Saraki was seen robbing his both eyes simultaneously with both hands each time he is awake from his slumber.

He would put up a blank facial expression some moments after waking up not minding the witty remarks by his leading lawyer, Kanu Agabi, a former Attorney-General of the Nigerian Federation. Mr. Agabi's jocular remarks typically come when Saraki dozes off, his comments usually threw the whole courtroom into a roaring laughter as if they are designed to alert Saraki to stay awake.

But some moments later you would find the Senate President already dozing off, struggling to stay awake.

PoliticsTimi Frank Blasts Oyegun Over Saraki's Fate by contactlenz(op): 5:51pm On Apr 17, 2016
By Omeiza Ajayi
ABUJA – Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress APC, Timi Frank has berated the national chairman of the party, Chief John Oyegun for attempting to influence the outcome of the trial of Senate President, Bukola Saraki at the Code of Conduct Tribunal CCT.

Frank said the recent pronouncement of the chairman that the party was prepared to lose the senate presidency implies that the party has already decided Saraki’s fate even before the commencement of the trial.

According to him, Mr Oyegun is only acting out a script by such pronouncements, adding that no organ of the party has met to take any formal position regarding the travails of the Senate President.

“The recent interview granted by the Chairman of the APC…has again vindicated my position on the crisis rocking the APC, which may finally put to rest the doubt that all is well within the APC. That the chairman of the ruling party would grant an interview on his personal opinion and asserting it to be the decision of the party, can at best be described as unfortunate and a carefully mapped-out plan to rubbish the current trial of the Senate President.

“It is on record, that there has not been any NEC , NWC , BOT or Caucus meeting of the party where such decision was taking to abandon the Senate President to his fate. This move undoubtedly proves once more, that the Chairman is acting on an already prepared script to incarcerate and make the Senate President pay for his disobedience for not adhering to the party’s decision in contesting for the seat of the Senate Presidency.

“The chairman’s position on the current travails of the Senate President in the CCT, is a clear indication that the APC under Chief Oyegun has spoken the minds of all those, that were in doubt that the persecution of the Senate President is and may be politically motivated.

“Instead of allowing the court to take its course in finding the Senate President guilty, having utilised his fundamental rights as enshrined in our constitution of the legality of his trial at the tribunal, one would have wondered the hurry in Chief Oyegun’s assertions. Having said therefore, would it not be most appropriate for the Chairman of the ruling party to allow for the trial to commence and for the court to conclude on its findings before hurriedly confirming the position of the party or the President in justifying the current travails of the Senate President as his sole cross to bear?

“The chairman further emphasised that the party wouldn’t mind to loose its Number 3 seat to the opposition PDP. This action as ridiculous as it may sound only goes to confirm that indeed the party may have hit the final nail on the coffin, having taking a position already on the fate of its Number 3 man before the conclusion of the verdict of the court in confirming if the senate president is guilty or not. This supposedly hurried speech is another confirmation that an already prepared script is in the offing by those who will stop at nothing in seeing that the Senate President is used as the scapegoat of the Anti Corruption war of this administration. This may very well be in the offing since the Senate President won the seat into the upper legislative chamber, which was seen as a move against the party ab initio.

“The chairman must be reminded of the role played by Senator Saraki in the emergence of the ruling party and if Chief Oyegun in all honesty believes that Senator Saraki should be the scapegoat for the ruling party, owing to his confirmation of bias in the ongoing trial of the senate president, then indeed the chairman has to be reminded that history has a way of repeating itself and reminding those who take it for granted when it beckons”, he said.

PoliticsWhat Is On Senator Saraki’s Mind? - By Joe Igbokwe (APC Lagos). by contactlenz(op): 1:48pm On Apr 17, 2016
Given the overwhelming weight of evidence against Saraki and the excess baggage of cartons of corruption dating back to his days at Societte General Bank, his days as Governor of Kwara State for 8years, his heavy financial deals across Nigeria via salaries even after serving the State as governor, his massive involvement in Panama Papers scandal, his fraudulent manipulation to get the Senate Presidency, his trials at CCB, High Court, Supreme Court and now CCT, I had not thought that the Senate President, Senator Saraki will learn his lessons and quit the stage when the ovation has ceased to be loudest but this is Nigeria where impunity is not a crime.
In mind silent moments, I have been trying to figure out who is beating the drums for Saraki or what is giving this guy the confidence that he will stand tall at the end of the day. It has never ceases to fill me with wonders why a supposed intelligent mind like Saraki who is also a medical doctor think he can overcome a precarious and delicate situation like this when somebody like President Buhari is on the throne. I am at a loss that Saraki’s many friends and well-wishers have not been led to see the hand writing on the wall and consequently advise their friend to bow to the exigencies of the moment and follow the path of honour and grace. I am stunned that Senator Saraki cannot understand that we are in a new dispensation that has zero tolerance on corruption and impunity.
How I wish that friends, family members, associates and hangers on will find the need to persuade Senator Saraki that it is all over for him. Did Saraki hear the Chief Justice of Nigeria when he lamented on long delays and adjournments that have associated with corruption trials and promised robust support to fight corruption by encouraging speedy trials? Did Saraki take notice that it is the biggest institutional support for fight against corruption in recent times in Nigeria? Did Saraki take mental notice of this signal from the CJN? Did Saraki get the signal from his primary constituency in the Senate when the number of Senators following him to CCT suddenly dropped to 30 from almost 80 Senators? Can Senator Saraki deduce anything from this vote of no confidence? Did Saraki get the signal when President Buhari said he would have left the stage if he is Saraki? How can Senator Saraki see the weighty cases against him as an act of witch-hunting and political persecution? Has Saraki sat down to reflect on his political history, his antecedents, his many shady deals, his actions and deeds, his love for money, his many penchant for cutting corners, his many acts of impunity, his many betrayals, and selfish tendencies? Can Saraki overcome these problems and still hold his head high as the President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria?
As I write this, the British Prime Minister David Cameron is before the British Parliament defending himself concerning the Panama papers scandal. The Iceland Prime Minister has resigned his position as a result of the Panama papers scandal. Across the world many leaders whose names were mentioned are responding to the scandal but not in this clime. Senator does not see anything wrong in becoming the Senate President through the backdoor. Senator Saraki did not see anything wrong with fraudulent assets declaration as a public servant. Senator Saraki does not care about receiving salaries even when he has vacated office. Saraki does not worry about using State Government money to service personal loans. The 2016 Budget padding by the National Assembly does not bother Senator Saraki. Moving from one Court to another to try to circumvent justice has not bothered Senator Saraki. Abandoning his duty as the Senate President to go to courts has not worried Saraki. Going to courts with 90 lawyers and tens of Senators does not perturb Senator Saraki. The tide of public opinion on Saraki’s many troubles has not pricked the conscience of Senator Saraki.
The abuse of public office, abuse of public trust, abuse of power and abuse of confidence have not meant anything to Senator Saraki. The abuse of precious gift of time by Saraki to run from one court to another has not worried the Senate President. Few years back, a New York Governor resigned to go and reconcile with his family after being accused of unhealthy and inappropriate relationship with another woman. In same United States, a governor who left his office for almost a week and eloped with a girl friend to another country had to vacate his position and return home to put his house in order. For any responsible and responsive leader this is the path of honour when there is an abuse of position, privilege and power. Saraki’s case is not going to be an exception. It is good to be important but it is more important to be good. A good man, a responsible man and a man who is worried about himself knows when to quit in a situation he cannot help. This is the hallmark of a leader. Kippling, the poet once wrote that the world and everything in it belongs to the man who keeps his head when others are losing theirs.
Now, let me say this: Anybody who knows Senator Saraki and wishes him well should advise him to leave the stage now because the ovation is no longer loudest for him here. The heat is just too much from all corners. He has put up a good fight as a man but he cannot win this war. This is an honest truth and Saraki should find a way to give himself a soft landing and stop disparaging the Senate. His friends should help him at a time like this to do the needful. A school of thought has suggested that we should be wise enough to accept a situation we cannot change. Now with all the friends in the world, with all the armies in the world, with all the connections in the world and with all the wealth in the world, Senator Saraki cannot win this case. It is a bad case.
But will Senator Saraki listen to wise counselling and step out of the Senate Presidency to go defend his parents and family name? Will Senator Saraki do the needful by going the way of the civilized men and women who faced similar situations in the past? Will Saraki respect himself now? Will Saraki respect the Senate? Will Saraki respect Nigeria?
Time will tell!..
