Scientists have recently identified 69 drugs and experimental compounds that may be effective in combating the novel coronavirus.

On Sunday, the New York Times reported:

“Some of the medications are already used to treat other diseases, and repurposing them to treat Covid-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, may be faster than trying to invent a new antiviral from scratch, the scientists said.

The list of drug candidates appeared in a study published on the web site bioRxiv. The researchers have submitted the paper to a journal for publication.” The Trump administration has slashed red tape to distribute unapproved therapies and vaccines to patients in need faster and to identify effective drugs. Health officials have named the virus itself SARS CoV-2 and the illness caused by the virus COVID-19.

Among the 69 drugs that scientists believe may be effective against COVID-19 is chloroquine, a drug used to treat malaria.

Mainstream media outlets have blasted U.S. President Donald Trump for touting the anti-malaria drug chloroquine as a possible treatment for coronavirus patients.

The media went as far as blaming Trump for the death of an Arizona man who died after self-medicating with a fish tank cleaner that contains chloroquine.

Trump’s comments about the anti-malaria drug have been in line with scientists and doctors who believe the treatment has shown anecdotal promise in treating people infected by coronavirus while acknowledging that more tests need to be conducted on the risky drug.

Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York, the U.S. state hardest-hit by the virus, also believes the anti-malaria drugs may be effective in treating coronavirus patients, saying clinical studies will start on Tuesday

Coronavirus: Atiku’s daughter-in-law, grandchildren test negative

The daughter-in-law of Atiku Abubakar, as well as his grandchildren, have tested negative to the COVID-19, The PUNCH can confirm.

They are, however, on self-isolation at their home located at Taslee Palm City Estate, Uruguay Street, Maitama, Abuja.

Atiku’s son, Mohammed, who is currently being quarantined at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, had tested positive for the virus on Sunday.

Mohammed is married to Badriyya, the daughter of a former Governor of Bauchi State, Ahmed Muazu, who is also a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Speaking with The PUNCH on Monday, Mr. Zakari Aliyu, who is the Vice-Chairman of the estate, said there was no need to panic as even the immediate family of the patient had all tested negative.

Aliyu said, “The man was taken away by the NCDC around 1am. He tested positive but his wife and children all tested negative. However, they are all on self-isolation for the 14-day window and I commend the wife for cooperating with us. There is no cause for panic.


“If his immediate family has tested negative, then it is unlikely that anyone else in the estate has it.”

There have been reports on Twitter that Atiku’s son went to a club and also attended the Jumat prayers were he could have possibly infected others.

However, Aliyu told The PUNCH that Atiku had three sons in the estate and so it was easy for anyone to make a mistake.

“The truth is that Atiku has three sons in our estate. Also, our estate is big and the houses are well spaced. It is possible that there is some malice as regards the news being spread on social media.

“Also, it is not true that the estate reported the man. We had no hand in it. The CDC came to convey him to the isolation centre,” Aliyu said.

Atiku’s son, it was learnt, came into Nigeria from Switzerland which is also battling the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the estate management has issued a directive, restricting non-resident domestic servants from coming into the estate.

In a circular on Monday, the estate advised residents to limit the number of visitors even as it asked parents to ensure less interaction between their children.

The statement read in part, “We write to notify all residents of our esteemed estate that a case of the pandemic COVID-19 has been discovered in our estate. The infected resident has been safely evacuated from the estate by medical personnel from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital, Abuja.

“In view of the above, the management of the estate in line with the directives received from the NCDC has approved the following measures effective immediately to enable us tackle the spread of the pandemic

“All non-resident domestic staff (drivers, cleaners, cooks, nannies etc) shall not be granted access into the estate. Residents are to prevent their children from playing outside your homes. Everyone should minimise the number of visitors they invite into the estate as proper screening will be carried out going forward.”

IOC member says that 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be postponed due to coronavirus pandemic

Veteran International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound told USA TODAY Sports Monday afternoon that the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games are going to be postponed, likely to 2021, with the details to be worked out in the next four weeks.


“On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided,” Pound said in a phone interview. “The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know.”

Pound, a Canadian who has been one of the most influential members of the IOC for decades, said he believes the IOC will announce its next steps soon.

“It will come in stages,” he said. “We will postpone this and begin to deal with all the ramifications of moving this, which are immense.”

When told what Pound had said and asked for an IOC response, spokesperson Mark Adams said, via text, "Well, as we announced yesterday, we are looking at scenarios."

On Sunday, IOC President Thomas Bach said he was going to take the next four weeks to decide the fate of the Tokyo Olympics, scheduled to begin July 24. Bach has ruled out canceling the Games.

The Olympics would be the latest – and, by far, most significant – sporting event to be impacted by the coronavirus, which was first identified in Wuhan, China, in December. Also known as COVID-19, the virus rapidly spread throughout China and across the world in subsequent months, infecting hundreds of thousands of people and causing substantial disruptions to daily life in numerous countries.

Pound's comments came less than 24 hours after IOC president Thomas Bach indicated, for the first time, that postponing the Tokyo Games would be a possibility. In a letter to the athlete community, he said the IOC would begin exploring alternate ways to stage the Games, including postponement, and plan to reach a decision within the next four weeks.

In the hours thereafter, however, the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Committees said they will not send a delegation of athletes to the Tokyo Games unless they are postponed. Australia then alluded to something similar, but in a less direct way. It said the executive board of its Olympic committee agreed that "an Australian team could not be assembled in the changing circumstances at home and abroad."

By Monday morning, the German Olympic Committee had joined its counterparts in Brazil and Norway, among other countries, in publicly urging the IOC to postpone the Olympics.

This would the first time the Olympics have been suspended, though they have been canceled previously during periods of war. The 1916 Summer Games were canceled because of World War I, as were the Summer and Winter Games in 1940 and 1944, due to World War II.

Boycotts also caused serious complications for the Games in 1976, 1980 and 1984. But in each case, the event itself went on as scheduled.
