By Ibrahim Abdulmumin Ahmad Law Student, Newgate University Minna Introduction At a time when Nigeria’s tax landscape is undergoing significant transformation, the National Tax Law Summit 2026 provided a timely and critical platform for dialogue. Held at the Federal Ministry of Justice, Abuja, and organized by Daniella Amaebite the International Vice President of the West African Law Students’ Association (WALSA), the summit brought together law students, legal practitioners, and key stakeholders in the tax sector. Notably, the event also attracted taxation students from Nasarawa State University, reflecting its growing relevance beyond strictly legal circles and reinforcing the interdisciplinary importance of taxation in national development. Keynote Addresses: Setting the Tone The summit commenced with insightful keynote addresses that framed the direction of the discussions. Hon. Chukwuemeka Eze, as the first keynote speaker, explained the basic structure of Nigeria’s tax system. A defining moment of the summit came with the address of Mr. Arome Abu, Esq, Keynote Speaker II, who remarked: “Taxation is not about revenue; it is about development.” This powerful assertion resonated throughout the sessions, challenging participants to rethink taxation not merely as a fiscal tool, but as a strategic instrument for sustainable national growth. Panel Discussions: Practical Insights And Perspectives The summit featured a dynamic panel comprising distinguished contributors, including Sa’abira Oyiza Jimoh Esq, Mr. Abubakar Abdulsalam,Samuel C. Chukwu, Esq and Abdul Kareem Musa Esq. Discussions during this session were both practical and thought-provoking, focusing on real-world challenges within Nigeria’s tax system. Panelists examined issues surrounding policy implementation, compliance gaps, and institutional inefficiencies, offering valuable perspectives drawn from both legal practice and policy experience. The session was seamlessly coordinated by Stanley Mamuda, a final year law student of Nassarawa state university keffi, who served as the Master of Ceremony, ensuring a well-structured and engaging program. Critical Issues in Nigeria’s Tax Regime A central theme of the summit was the ongoing evolution of Nigeria’s tax framework. While recent reforms signal progress, concerns persist regarding their consistency, implementation, and overall effectiveness. One recurring issue was tax compliance. Many citizens remain reluctant to fully engage with the tax system, often due to limited trust in governance and concerns about accountability in the utilization of tax revenues. Addressing this challenge requires not only policy reform but also a deliberate commitment to transparency and public confidence-building. Equally important is the need for a balanced tax system. While taxation remains essential for national development, excessive or poorly structured tax policies risk stifling business growth and discouraging investment. The discussions emphasized that tax laws must remain fair, adaptive, and responsive to Nigeria’s economic realities. Conclusion The National Tax Law Summit 2026 stood as more than just a gathering of stakeholders; it was a call to action. The insights shared underscored both the strides made in reforming Nigeria’s tax system and the challenges that still demand urgent attention. As Nigeria continues to navigate its evolving tax regime, sustained dialogue, effective implementation of policies, and an unwavering commitment to transparency will be crucial. Ultimately, taxation must move beyond revenue generation to fulfill its broader purpose as a catalyst for national development. For participants, the summit was not only an opportunity to learn but also a reminder of their role in shaping the future of taxation in Nigeria. https://loyalnigerianlawyer.com/reflections-on-the-national-tax-law-summit-2026-tax-law-reimagined-navigating-nigerias-new-regime-in-a-changing-economy/
