shymexx: Ben Okri OBE FRSL is a Nigerian poet and novelist. Okri is considered one of the foremost African authors in the post-modern and post-colonial traditions and has been compared favorably with authors such as Salman Rushdie and Gabriel García Márquez...

Being knighted in the UK isn't a joke - Ben Okri for President!! grin
Like I said compared favorably grin
Nice Wikipedia sleuthing cheesy
PoliticsRe: Chinua Achebe At 82: 'We Remember Differently' - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie by Crayola1: 8:11pm On Nov 29, 2012
shymexx: Obviously, Mandela will support him since they're the two most overrated Africans ever... grin

Even Winnie thinks Mandela is overrated - I wonder why Achebe's wife hasn't said the same thing to Achebe...

Anyway, Ben Okri is a realist - and realists 'hang' with realists - hence, why he prefers the Salman Rushdie comparison...

Achebe isn't a realist, enough said... grin
Lol moving the goal post I see, whatever floats your boat...

Is Toni Morrison overrated too? cheesy

He doesn't prefer, he has been compared favorable to Rushdie.

And only an idiota thinks that there is something wrong with writing fiction tongue
PoliticsRe: Chinua Achebe At 82: 'We Remember Differently' - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie by Crayola1: 8:01pm On Nov 29, 2012
shymexx: Nah, too bad the literary titans in Africa don't even take Achebe seriously... They always tell him to get a Nobel Prize for Literature and get on their level - perhaps that's why he's bitter.... grin

Anyway, Ben Okri also rejected early comparisons to Achebe - however, he's happy with being compared to Salman Rushdie... Wonder why?? angry sad grin
Not even, many of the literary titans cite Achebe as their inspiration, he also helped them publish their own works.

Well Achebe has a fan in Mandiba Mandela so all is good cool

And I couldn't find anything on Okri grin
PoliticsRe: Chinua Achebe At 82: 'We Remember Differently' - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie by Crayola1: 7:46pm On Nov 29, 2012

dayokanu: So who is the

Father of Modern European literature, Ancient European literature, Modern American literature, Ancient American literature, Modern Asian, Ancient Asian put it in a list
Lol, mister literal. Some do not add the modern part wink

America:
Mark Twain
http://voices.yahoo.com/mark-twain-father-american-literature-4199505.html?cat=38
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Twain
http://americanprofile.com/articles/mark-twain-the-father-of-american-literature/
http://darkroom.baltimoresun.com/2012/06/celebrating-fathers-of-on-fathers-day/la-tr-twaincover/

Europe:
You mostly get English literature but anyway:
Father of English Literature: Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare

Latin America:
Carlos Fuentes
http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2012/05/20/remembering-carlos-fuentes.html
http://www.britannica.com/shakespeare/article-215817
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/lifestyle/2012/05/carlos-fuentes-mexican-novelist-who-inspired-latin-american-writing-dies/

I'll look for Asia later smiley

But Europe and Asia will probably be harder due to their fragmented histories
PoliticsRe: Chinua Achebe At 82: 'We Remember Differently' - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie by Crayola1: 6:17pm On Nov 29, 2012
Latin America's father as you requested:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2012/05/20/remembering-carlos-fuentes.html

Asia will probably be more segmented by country so I doubt you could find a "father" overall but I will look just for you cheesy

So far Africa, Europe, South America.

Australia and Antarctica included huh
PoliticsRe: Chinua Achebe At 82: 'We Remember Differently' - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie by Crayola1: 6:13pm On Nov 29, 2012
dayokanu: There should be one father, or how can multiple people be the father of something.

So which is which and give us the quotes referring to them as Father of American/Asian/European literature
Because there were a lot of writers at the same time. Contrast that to when Achebe was writing there were few African novelists.

And it depends on the genre as well.

I gave you the European one cheesy

Add Shakespeare for "modern" English, even though that's relative.
PoliticsRe: Chinua Achebe At 82: 'We Remember Differently' - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie by Crayola1: 6:10pm On Nov 29, 2012
dayokanu: Give us their names those cited for Father of Modern American, European, Asian etc Literature

Even Achebe knew it was stupidd to give him such award.

Now we have gottwn to another one, Father of most translated book in the Universe/Solar system, In the world, In Africa, in Nigeria, In Alayibo or in Anambra State?
For America it depends on the generation cheesy
Europe:

Father of English literature Geoffrey Chaucer
Father

African American:
Toss up between Wright and Ellison
Morrison as well

But it depends on the genre

Asia, I'm not sure but I'll look it up, Latin America I have forgotten.
PoliticsRe: Chinua Achebe At 82: 'We Remember Differently' - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie by Crayola1: 6:01pm On Nov 29, 2012
John Updike is often cited as one of America's best 20th century writers

Hemmingway
Fitzgerald
Salinger
Kerouac

African Americans
Morrison
Hughes
Ellison

Etc. etc.
PoliticsRe: Chinua Achebe At 82: 'We Remember Differently' - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie by Crayola1: 5:47pm On Nov 29, 2012
Yes there are people cited for most of those too cheesy

Achebe didn't write the article
Two his point was that there were many writers before him and after him so the title ignores their work.

The overall point was that the novel is a landmark piece of literature from Africa and the fact that its the most translated novel speaks to its staying power.
PoliticsRe: Chinua Achebe At 82: 'We Remember Differently' - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie by Crayola1: 5:37pm On Nov 29, 2012
dayokanu: I am just asking you which organizations performed the DNA to determine these fathers. Someone cant just come from somewhere and say he is the father of Crayola wont a sensible person ask him for the DNA evidence like on the Maury Show?

And BTW what makes me sleep better at night? You want to know? Ok Cuddling Crayola makes me sleep better at night wink
Ask the NYT and Time Magazine why they call him such cheesy
PoliticsRe: Chinua Achebe At 82: 'We Remember Differently' - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie by Crayola1: 5:32pm On Nov 29, 2012
dayokanu: Nobel is not the all be all, Gordon Bell prize is or some useless award like "Father of internet" and "Father of African literature"

Maybe i should ask which organisation performs the DNA test to determine these so called illegitimate fathers?
Okay ooo whatever makes you sleep better at night cheesy

All I know is that Nobel is subjective, Harry Kissinger and Mandela both received the same prize, anyone familiar with Kissenger would know its funny.
PoliticsRe: Chinua Achebe At 82: 'We Remember Differently' - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie by Crayola1: 5:31pm On Nov 29, 2012

PoliticsRe: Chinua Achebe At 82: 'We Remember Differently' - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie by Crayola1: 5:03pm On Nov 29, 2012
dayokanu: The Nobel is the pinnacle of academic achievement. Isn't it disgusting that Igbos like you whose lineage can never smell it are down playing the nobel
No one said the Nobel is not a prestigious honor but its not the end all be all in my opinion. Some of he best American writers in history were repeatedly snubbed,so it happens.

The most important Nobels tend to be the science and math ones as well as peace.

I doubt JK Rowling is crying because her novel hasn't given her a Nobel cheesy

Even Soyinka himself admits to the legacy of Achebe and his novel things fall apart, he has to remind people that yes he won the Nobel but it was not him who wrote the novel grin

Even if he never receives it,I think Father of the Modern African novel shall suffice cool
And Adiche has done well herself, first Nigerian novel being made into a Hollywood/British production.

Life is good wink
CultureRe: Which Is The Most Popular Nigerian Language Among Nigerians? by Crayola1: 3:55pm On Nov 29, 2012
It depends on your area, but Hausa most likely due to sheer number of speakers both native and non-native

Igbo is probably hard because of its use of turn of phrase from what I hear, its a proverb rich language so its very context-heavy.
Chinese is similar in the fact that language is more abstract than literal like English.
PoliticsRe: Chinua Achebe At 82: 'We Remember Differently' - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie by Crayola1: 3:53pm On Nov 29, 2012
Adiche even disagreed on the Awo issue by Achebe and you folks are still hot. At this point some of you are just angry for the sake of it undecided

Oh well Adiche should go back to counting her money, Achebe himself has slept well for several months now. All is well according to them cheesy

At least Achebe has always been a thinker except fotr his recent senile paranoid delusions captured and made into a book.
