shymexx: Ben Okri OBE FRSL is a Nigerian poet and novelist. Okri is considered one of the foremost African authors in the post-modern and post-colonial traditions and has been compared favorably with authors such as Salman Rushdie and Gabriel García Márquez...Like I said compared favorably ![]() Nice Wikipedia sleuthing ![]() |
shymexx: Obviously, Mandela will support him since they're the two most overrated Africans ever...Lol moving the goal post I see, whatever floats your boat... Is Toni Morrison overrated too? ![]() He doesn't prefer, he has been compared favorable to Rushdie. And only an idiota thinks that there is something wrong with writing fiction ![]() |
shymexx: Nah, too bad the literary titans in Africa don't even take Achebe seriously... They always tell him to get a Nobel Prize for Literature and get on their level - perhaps that's why he's bitter....Not even, many of the literary titans cite Achebe as their inspiration, he also helped them publish their own works. Well Achebe has a fan in Mandiba Mandela so all is good And I couldn't find anything on Okri ![]() |
Too bad no one thinks your opinion is important ![]() |
dayokanu: So who is theLol, mister literal. Some do not add the modern part America: Mark Twain http://voices.yahoo.com/mark-twain-father-american-literature-4199505.html?cat=38 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Twain http://americanprofile.com/articles/mark-twain-the-father-of-american-literature/ http://darkroom.baltimoresun.com/2012/06/celebrating-fathers-of-on-fathers-day/la-tr-twaincover/ Europe: You mostly get English literature but anyway: Father of English Literature: Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare Latin America: Carlos Fuentes http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2012/05/20/remembering-carlos-fuentes.html http://www.britannica.com/shakespeare/article-215817 http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/lifestyle/2012/05/carlos-fuentes-mexican-novelist-who-inspired-latin-american-writing-dies/ I'll look for Asia later ![]() But Europe and Asia will probably be harder due to their fragmented histories |
Latin America's father as you requested: http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2012/05/20/remembering-carlos-fuentes.html Asia will probably be more segmented by country so I doubt you could find a "father" overall but I will look just for you ![]() So far Africa, Europe, South America. Australia and Antarctica included ![]() |
dayokanu: There should be one father, or how can multiple people be the father of something.Because there were a lot of writers at the same time. Contrast that to when Achebe was writing there were few African novelists. And it depends on the genre as well. I gave you the European one ![]() Add Shakespeare for "modern" English, even though that's relative. |
dayokanu: Give us their names those cited for Father of Modern American, European, Asian etc LiteratureFor America it depends on the generation ![]() Europe: Father of English literature Geoffrey Chaucer Father African American: Toss up between Wright and Ellison Morrison as well But it depends on the genre Asia, I'm not sure but I'll look it up, Latin America I have forgotten. |
John Updike is often cited as one of America's best 20th century writers Hemmingway Fitzgerald Salinger Kerouac African Americans Morrison Hughes Ellison Etc. etc. |
Yes there are people cited for most of those too ![]() Achebe didn't write the article Two his point was that there were many writers before him and after him so the title ignores their work. The overall point was that the novel is a landmark piece of literature from Africa and the fact that its the most translated novel speaks to its staying power. |
dayokanu: I am just asking you which organizations performed the DNA to determine these fathers. Someone cant just come from somewhere and say he is the father of Crayola wont a sensible person ask him for the DNA evidence like on the Maury Show?Ask the NYT and Time Magazine why they call him such ![]() |
dayokanu: Nobel is not the all be all, Gordon Bell prize is or some useless award like "Father of internet" and "Father of African literature"Okay ooo whatever makes you sleep better at night ![]() All I know is that Nobel is subjective, Harry Kissinger and Mandela both received the same prize, anyone familiar with Kissenger would know its funny. |
oyb: this from the kinsman of 'the father of the internet' - the man who converted gordon bell prize to nobel prizeYou are welcome to type it into google and see what pops up ![]() |
dayokanu: The Nobel is the pinnacle of academic achievement. Isn't it disgusting that Igbos like you whose lineage can never smell it are down playing the nobelNo one said the Nobel is not a prestigious honor but its not the end all be all in my opinion. Some of he best American writers in history were repeatedly snubbed,so it happens. The most important Nobels tend to be the science and math ones as well as peace. I doubt JK Rowling is crying because her novel hasn't given her a Nobel ![]() Even Soyinka himself admits to the legacy of Achebe and his novel things fall apart, he has to remind people that yes he won the Nobel but it was not him who wrote the novel Even if he never receives it,I think Father of the Modern African novel shall suffice ![]() And Adiche has done well herself, first Nigerian novel being made into a Hollywood/British production. Life is good ![]() |
It depends on your area, but Hausa most likely due to sheer number of speakers both native and non-native Igbo is probably hard because of its use of turn of phrase from what I hear, its a proverb rich language so its very context-heavy. Chinese is similar in the fact that language is more abstract than literal like English. |
Adiche even disagreed on the Awo issue by Achebe and you folks are still hot. At this point some of you are just angry for the sake of it ![]() Oh well Adiche should go back to counting her money, Achebe himself has slept well for several months now. All is well according to them ![]() |
Crayola1: Obama won the Nobel. I like Obama but even I could see that it was a bit funny for him to win it |
dayokanu: Only that Greatest writer wasn't deemed good enough to win the greatest prize in Literature the NobelObama won the Nobel. I like Obama but even I could see that it was a bit funny for him to win it Nobel is not everything son... |
Infrastructure Reducing unemployment find alternative resources to oil for economic growth Returning to federalism ![]() |

3012!? Jesus that's extreme pessimism Nigeria should fold up at that point and call it a loss ![]() |
nnenna.1:Thanks, I want to dream big ![]() I didn't know if you wanted specific areas though I'm not too familiar with Nigeria like that so I was being general ![]() |
I think for the SE dense economic cities will spring up ![]() Like Tokyo, Japan: https://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_me6l8h0znk1r7nxcqo1_500.jpg https://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_me6l70xTvF1r7nxcqo1_500.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4025/4719554634_4cf9e2c3bd_b.jpg Hong Kong https://images.nationalgeographic.com/wpf/media-live/photos/000/128/cache/hong-kong-city_12846_600x450.jpg https://i.cdn.travel.cnn.com/sites/default/files/styles/inline_image_624x416/public/2012/09/24/inline-pos_atelier_september_2012_pr2.jpg Or Seoul: https://www.forthepubliceye.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Seoul.jpg The region's small size would probably benefit cooperation more than other places ![]() Maybe a dedicated rail line between all 5 states ![]() https://www.gojapango.com/travel/images/Shinkansen_500.jpg For parts of the North maybe something like Morocco, Qatar, and Egypt ![]() https://farm1.static.flickr.com/163/421371779_423951af23.jpg https://ak1.picdn.net/shutterstock/videos/2614304/preview/stock-footage-hassan-ii-mosque-the-third-largest-mosque-in-the-world-casablanca-morocco.jpg https://www.qatarembassy.net/qatar%20gallery/doha%20city/Doha%20city%20007%20state%20of%20Qatar.JPG https://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/files/2010/12/qatar-doha_1015726c.jpg The SS maybe Miami ![]() |
NYC never looked so good ![]() j/k |
nagoma: I wonder what Okonjo -Iweala is thinking about. No body in Nigeria knows. She must be keeping it to herself. And yet a paranoid man still is three times the man you are ![]() |
If the make an Ojukwu section some people here may never come out ![]() |
geez*:Ok ooo, you made a similar backhanded remark in the reverse so all fair in tribalism ![]() |
dayokanu: The daily Igbo bitchathon in full force. The meds have worn off what a shame ![]() |
tomakint: You are full of jokes! Sounding like one 'Malaika' just stick to your guns, no one is taking you too seriously, I hope you know that?He is, had this been Soyinka would he have dismissed his opinion like he did Adiche's. Hell no Wise man indeed ![]() We would see real Houdini trick to make it fit his agenda, which is why every comment is an ad hominem attack. If your character is lacking so will your arguments, which is why its relevant to the discussion. |
A case of others crying more than the bereaved ![]() I'm sure Adiche will be happy to know that she can dry her eyes on that cool cash she is making Biafra books is good business, no wonder some folks are mad that they didn't think of it first. |
