ELECTORATES' POWER - The youth are the "leaders of tomorrow," as we are often reminded. Tomorrow, however, never comes when it comes to their participation in governance and development. From one general election to another, the majority of the politicians elected or reelected into offices are recycled old politicians who have, over the years, had a strangled grip on governance in Nigeria. This has led to the emergence of an unsustainable system in Nigeria in which most politicians in power are either old and feeble or are bedeviled by some sickness or disease that makes them incapable of living up to the demands of their electoral offices. Politics As A Game of Numbers; The Right Numbers. Presently, around 70% of Nigeria's population is under 30. With that dominating number, you would assume that youth—young men and women in particular—in Nigeria should participate more in decision-making, given their significant role in the nation's demography. However, in all spheres of society, both are frequently underrepresented or excluded as partners. Demographically, politicians only make up a number of the country's total population, even though many choose to bandy astronomical figures in a show of false political strength. It is obviously on this premise that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) once laid claim to being the largest political party in Africa, with the recently deceased Vincent Ogbulafor, one-time secretary of the PDP, claiming that the party would rule Nigeria for the next 60 years. There is substantial proof that the political parties in Nigeria frequently invent statistics. The fact that none of them claim to have an actual membership list has led to a lack of confidence among the public. For instance, a group of the APC in Rivers State that backed Senator Magnus Abe claimed that the party's convention registration list was replete with the names of deceased persons back in March. She claims. The controversy is nevertheless not as great as the obvious absurd figures that various parties frequently assert. The number of votes cast in a single party's primary election, when only members of that party could vote, considerably outnumbered the number of votes cast in the general election, which was open to all eligible voters, during the most recent governorship election in Anambra. Where do our parties get anti-democratic figures from? Political parties in Nigeria have a strong tendency to achieve political victories through wholly undemocratic machinations, including the unwholesome practice of manipulating figures to make it look like they have the numbers to determine their own political fate rather than the electorates; hence their penchant for lawlessness and impunity. One can see from the outcomes of several election petitions that the ordinary Nigerian politician is more concerned with electoral triumph through the corruption of the election process than with fair and impartial election numbers. This explains why many politicians have rejected empirical electoral systems like the electronic transmission of election results and continue to do so. They can be highly persuasive when expressing the negatives of using technology for elections, even though many see nothing wrong with embracing modern technology in all other facets of life. Yes, politics is and will remain a game of who has the most numbers, not just in Nigeria but everywhere around the globe. But still, it isn't just a game of imagined or fabricated numbers meant to win victory through corruption; it is a game of the right numbers, numbers that real people, the electorates, determine through real votes that should count as in other true democracies rather than concocted figures that enable corrupt politicians to access the corridors of power. INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, announced in early August at the close of the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) that the exercise had seen a significant rise in the total number of registered voters from 84 million to 96.2 million, bringing the number of new registrations to 12.2 million voters. A breakdown of INEC's reports also revealed that young people make up around 71% of the newly registered voters. Approximately 8.7 million of the 12.2 million newly registered voters are between the ages of 18 and 34, while 2.4 million are between the ages of 35 and 49. About 856 017 people are 50 to 69 years old, while 127 541 are above 70. Additionally, the figures show more women than men registered during the most recent CVR. There are 6,224,866 women and 6,074,078 men. With these numbers, the people, the Nigerian electorates, must realize that although politics is indeed a game of numbers, the real numbers - the numbers that should count - belong to them. The young electorates must not allow the trickery politicians to fool them into giving up their future. Nigerian young electorates have the power to take back their country and future from the haggard old forefathers that currently halt progress. The Nigerian people must ensure that the 2023 general elections are used to demonstrate, very definitely, that they have the numbers to determine their electoral fate and to redirect the course of governance in the country. Police Ambulance services attended, and an attempt to revive Ogochukwu failed as he was pronounced dead at the scene. By Ehi Ekhator It took Bola Tinubu's camp by surprise when the Vice President of Nigeria, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, declared for the presidency on Monday morning after a brief meeting with some governors. VP, however prior conjectured, was the last individual many Yoruba indigenes suspected would conflict with a man who purportedly handpicked him for the VP position. As the 2023 political race draws near, Nigerians are yawning for a genuine nationalist who might end their ongoing anguish. Osinbajo had been speculated for years to be continuing with the administration being headed by Mr Muhammadu Buhari whom many Nigerians had ruled out as a "complete failure". Osinbajo's declaration helped Nigerians remember the eight years of agony they would have zero desire to rehash. Nigerians were enraged when the VP promised to "complete what we have started", with some calling it a threat to Nigerians' survival. "If by the grace of God and the will of the people, I am given the opportunity, then I believe that first, we must complete what we have started," reads the declaration statement of the presidential hopeful. The declaration stares up many rumours that Osinbajo had fallen out of love with the Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Being the vice president of Nigeria, Osinbajo has an edge to clinch the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket; however, will Nigerians allow him to "complete what we have started?" Osinbajo could be a superior fit for Nigeria with his resume. For a couple of times, Buhari handover power during his clinical excursion to the United Kingdom, the VP showed that his thoughts were not quite the same as his chief. His ongoing enemy remains the massive failure of the administration. Though Buhari influenced the VP's activities over the eight years, he will confront an aggregate liability regarding what occurred during Buhari's presidency. Will Osinbajo defect to another political party to achieve his political aspiration? Is there friction between Osinbajo and Tinubu? Will he step down or face the APC Chieftain heads-on at the party primary? Is there friction between Osinbajo and Tinubu? A source at the presidency denied friction, saying that "The more we have party members declaring, the more guarantee we will have a competitive election." The source also condemned the idea of calling Osinbajo Mr Tinubu's son, arguing that "The VP marked his 65th birthday on 8 March and Asiwaju marked his own 70th birthday on 29 March. It doesn't make sense for a 70-year-old man to be called the father of a 65-year-old man. The presidential source added, "I don't see any conflict. Asiwaju was correct to say he didn't have a son grown enough to declare for the presidency." "Tinubu's first son Seyi is in his 30s, and he has not declared. VP is a grandfather, and it is most condescending to describe VP as Asiwaju's son," he added. "It is nothing personal. In a circumstance like this, supporters sometimes overreact or try to create something where none exists. Will Osinbajo defect to another political party to achieve his political aspiration? The political framework in Nigeria is unsound. Politicians defect the second they don't get what they need. They think they deserve it and would desperately do anything to get their hands on the ticket. This makes them unsurprising, temperamental, deceitful, and complete "backstabbers." There are hypotheses and fears that Osinbajo might toe a similar path, assuming he fails to run under APC. However, a close ally who spoke in anonymity does not think so. He thinks Osinbajo is a "decent man" who would support Tinubu if he doesn't clinch the ticket. He said, "He announced his candidacy, and they will go for the party primary. He will test his popularity just like Bola Asiwaju." "When you are bidding for a party ticket, once a candidate emerges, all party members are expected to rally around that choice ahead of the election. I don't see the VP defecting from the party if the outcome does not favour him. the VP is too decent; he is not desperate for office," the source said. Notwithstanding the cross country disappointment, Buhari actually has followers in the party who might uphold whomever he upholds. Will Mr Buhari back his 8-year ardent loyalist or a political partner who relinquished his official goal on the guarantee that he could be next? Since January, there have been at least 20 declarations on the ruling party, and all the aspirants consulted with Mr Buhari. A second source said, "There is a lot of names dropping going on. Asiwaju declared in January, and after he was Rochas Okorocha, then Uzo Kalu, David Umahi, Amaechi, Osinbajo, Fayemi and Senator Amosun have all declared. "Everybody tells you they have already informed the President, and as a leader, he shouldn't be seen overtly supporting anybody. "That is what some of the candidates do in order to give themselves credibility; they claim they are the President's candidates." Nigeria is strictly religious, significantly split among Christians and Muslims. The duo's choice would assist the cracks between these two religions. Nigerians are reluctant to support Tinubu as a result of his age, supposed medical issues and his political party, and they are hesitant toward Osinbajo in view of the administration and the party he represents. Who is your preferred candidate for APC? Will Yemi Osinbajo dump APC if he fails to clinch presidential ticket? Nigeria, the most conspicuous African country, is blessed with various characteristic resources yet horrendous and repulsive leaders. Since independence, the nation has battled to put its feet on the ground, but, it stays above water. Nigerians are committed patriots and confident individuals; they wish and appeal for a better day, notwithstanding various manipulating “imbeciles” that enjoyed taken benefit of the artless residents over the years. Regardless of the reprobates, Nigerians continue expecting a superhero in a country where the heroes are either imprisoned or killed. June 12 is a recognized day, a day when patriots assemble to celebrate democracy. June 12 was previously known as Abiola Day, celebrated in Lagos and some southwestern states of Nigeria. On June 6, 2018, eight days after May 29, 2018, celebrated as Democracy Day, the President Buhari-led Federal Government of Nigeria proclaimed June 12 to be the new Democracy Day. It was done to commemorate the democratic election of MKO Abiola on June 12, 1993, in what was viewed as Nigeria’s freest and fairest elections. Like a criminal in the night, Ibrahim Babangida cancelled and imprisoned Abiola after he proclaimed himself the President. All things considered, the late Chief MKO Abiola strangely kicked the bucket in jail subsequent to drinking tea during the negotiation of his freedom. He coughed in the presence of Kofi Annan and later died in the hospital. In another word, MKO was killed in detainment by the individuals who still meander the street. Another hero killed before the very eyes of the powerless. IN 1995, Ken Saro-Wiwa, a known activist from Ogoniland was held in Port Harcourt prison. His only crime was his outspokenness, audacity and his dream for a better Nigeria. He was arrested and sentenced to death by the Sani Abacha military government. On November 10, 1995, the activist and eight others were taken from the army base in Port Harcourt in the guise that Ogoni youths might attack the prison. The soldiers herded the prisoners in a single line with their wrists and ankles shackled. They were executed by hanging. Saro-Wiwa was first, and their bodies were taken to the Port Harcourt Cemetery under armed guard and buried. His last words were, “Lord, take my soul, but the struggle continues.” Killing activists and heroes isn’t new in Nigeria. Therefore, when Mr Buhari threatened to deal with the Igbos “in the language they understand“, Nigerians took it personally. Mr Buhari was a young brigade major during the Biafra war that saw more than 2 million Igbos slaughtered. Across Nigeria today, June 12, 2021, the street was occupied by the hurt, deceived, manipulated, furious hordes burnt out on the steady void and dangers to their future. Muhammadu Buhari, the current President, rode to office on the void felt by numerous individuals under the past administration led by Goodluck Jonathan. The saviour, many considered him a trooper, honest, enthusiastic, rescuer regardless of the fanaticism, nepotism, and bias signs related with him before. Six years into his administration, Nigerians are more divided, destitute, frightened and disappointed than ever. In the meantime, the President sits in his extravagance, takes vacation abroad, enhance his families, employ his kinfolks, and still claimed that aggrieved Nigerians are unfair. In an interview granted to the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on Friday, Buhari said, “we will never do well with those who want to oppose us.” The President still lives in denial, claiming the dying population are very unfair. Mr Buhari remembered that he campaigned on security, saying, “it is just commonsense. We have to secure our country or an establishment to manage it properly.” The Giant lacks commonsense as it hasn’t occurred to him that insecurity is a scourge and has deteriorated under his administration. While the north is battling Boko Haram, ISWAP and Fulani desperados, the south is busy combating similar Fulani outlaws and now “unknown gunmen” targetting government institutions in the South East. It didn’t occur to Mr Buhari that many students are snatched from their schools and inns consistently, and not all return to their families alive. It hasn’t occurred to the President that farmers are being murdered and their spouses assaulted in their farmlands by herdsmen he has spent his time on earth protecting. Mr Buhari doesn’t know that individuals are drained and fighting out of control inflations in a country where a large number of young people are jobless. He is heedless to the steady college and doctors’ strikes. The President isn’t conscious of the empty medical clinic structures with untrained specialists, absence of equipment and medications. When asked, “is there any hope that we will see a Nigeria that is free of security concerns before you leave office”, Buhari replied “that is my hope, that is what I want, and I said the number one thing is security. If you don’t secure the country, people won’t invest.” Mr Buhari claimed his administration is doing his best, accusing his enemies of attempting to sabotage his effort. As usual, Mr Buhari has never taken responsibility for anything, and he gets whatever he wants by force. Democracy day gives Nigerians the chance to stand up in spite of dangers from the public authority canines in uniform—Nigeria, a country in search of a superhero but governed by a scalawag in Aso rock who disregard democracy.
