By Jude Opara At a polling centre there shall be a presiding officer and between two and three assistant presiding officers appointed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) depending on the number of registered voters at the centre. The presiding officer shall delegate responsibilities to the assistant presiding officers and shall be the final authority at the voting unit. With the introduction of the Card Reader machine, once a voter approaches the polling centre, one of the officials will search the voters register to locate the person’s name and picture. Card reader Once that is done, the other officer will collect the Permanent Voter Card (PVC) of the person and slide it on the Card Reader so as to read the bio-data of the bearer. The Card Reader has a number of roles; it certifies the authenticity or otherwise of a PVC. It also tallies the number of the PVCs it has recorded and forwards same to a central server thereby eliminating the incident of ballot stuffing that was prevalent with the use of ordinary Voter Cards. If the PVC is genuine, the card reader will accept it and then the owner will place his thumb on the machine to also ascertain that it truly belongs to the person who brought it, thereby eliminating the incident of vote buying, multiple voting or voting by proxy. This step eliminates the use of PVCs stolen or purchased by some politicians as it renders them useless, the only advantage for those buying the cards being that it may suppress the votes of those who ordinarily the real owners of the PVCs would have voted for. When it is certified that the card is genuine and truly belongs to the person who brought it, it will pop up and announce to the hearing of party agents at the polling centre. The job of the card reader is in effect, to accredit voters, what it means is that during the actual voting, only those that were duly accredited will have the opportunity of voting. The issue of manipulating the process is drastically reduced because at a polling centre, there will be apart from the INEC staff, the agents of the contesting political parties, the observers both local and international as well as the media. |

‘I violated the law. I deserve to be punished. When I return to society, I won’t do it again,’ Chan said in courtroom footage aired on state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV). Police arrested more than 7,800 people last summer in Beijing over illegal drug use. Other celebrities, including actor Gao Hu, were also among those detained in what was described as the biggest such crackdown in two decades. Illegal drug use has ballooned in China in recent decades, after being virtually eradicated following the 1949 communist revolution. Official News Agency Xinhua said the maximum sentence for the charge against Chan was three years in prison. The trial and sentence were especially sensitive for Jackie Chan, who was named an anti-drug ambassador in 2009, and sits on China’s top national political advisory panel — the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. The actor has told Xinhua that he did not use his connections to interfere with the case and that he hopes his singer-actor son will eventually become an anti- drug ambassador. CCTV had aired video of the police raid on Jaycee Chan’s apartment, in which Chan was shown identifying marijuana in his possession. Ko testified on camera that he had used drugs at Chan’s home. |
Celebrities › Actor Jackie Chan’s Son Sentenced To Six Months Inprison For Drug Offense by Crownofwealth(op): 3:58pm On Jan 09, 2015 |
The son of actor Jackie Chan has been sentenced to six months in jail after pleaded guilty in a Beijing court to providing a venue for drug users. Police seized more than 100 grams of marijuana during an August raid at Jaycee Chan’s Beijing home, while he and Taiwanese movie star Ko Kai both tested positive for the drug, it was reported. His imprisonment comes amid a major crackdown on illegal drugs in China, and is particularly embarrassing for his father, who in 2009 was named an anti-drug ambassador. CCTV also said Chan told police that he has been using drugs for eight years. Ko, whose real name is Ko Chen-tung, has been released after a 14-day administrative detention for drug use. |

jamace: Security: The whole world is in turmoil. No where is safe. Nigeria is having its share in terrorism in the world. Many niorth African countries are having tougher security issues than Nigeria right now. Moreover, Nigeria had this kind of experience before, that was in 1967-1970, there was serious bloodshed, hunger and diseases. Employment: GEJ has established over 100 Almajiri schools and 14 universities in the federation. These schools employed so many Nigerians. Also, GEJ has revamped the textile industries and the railway system. They have employed many Nigerians too. Do I need to remind you of the automobile industries? Many have been employed by the automobile indiustries. The Agricultural sector has witnessed the greatest boom so far in terms of agricultural production in Nigeria. Loans and facilities provided to citizens to set up their farms. Such farms have provided much jobs to Nigerians. Do you know YOU-WIN programme? This too has helped Nigerians youths in no small measure. SURE-P too is another govt policy presently providing employment to citizens. And so many others. Education: GEJ has established over 100 Almajiri schools and 14 universities in the federation. Name any president of Nigeria that has achieved this feat. Remember the scholarship for first class students in universities abroad. Also, govt has financed our tertiary institutions to upgrade facilities and provide conducive learning environments to the students. And many more. Electricity: Believe it or not, this is one of the areas GEJ has performed well with the privatisation of the power industry. Though power supply is slow but some areas in the federation are witnessing improved power supply at the moment. With time I believe things will be better. Accountability: This is the area we all wish things should be done in a better way. Govt tries to carry everybody along by passing the Freedom Of Information law. Information is now available on request to the public. For instance, federal revenue money shared to various states and LGAs in the federation are published in our local dailies to let the members of the public know unfortunately most citizens do not care to challenge their governors and local govt chairmen to account for such money. It is unfortunate that the morality has collapsed in the society and corruption is evident every where but we can't put all the blame on govt because our religious houses (churches/mosques) have become a breeding ground for corruption, the pastors believe in making money at the detriment of morality and godliness and they preach that to their followers. You will agree with me that the leadership of our churches/mosques have collapsed because most of us attend these places and are corrupt.
In conclusion, anyone who says GEJ has not achieved anything is not sincere. Any one who says Nigeria is not developing under president Jonathan has a hidden agenda. Such persons may have failed to study history of development in Nigeria. Also, such persons may only be falling for the political gimmicks of political opponents of president Jonathan. Let us all be good citizens, stop being corrupt in all areas of our lives and support president Jonathan.
Assess the govt of president Jonathan with an open mind and you will see that a lot has been achieved. Thank you. i appreciate ur effort in putting up such a write up in defence of GEJ bt i must say that this man has failed.i have neva felt his impact since he became president. |
