NEPA or PHCN wahala is one understandable thing that we have accepted as our faith in Nigeria, that even when power stays for long we worry and pray in our hearts that it should be off in order not to suffer it for long.

Nigerians would understand the fact that NEPA now PHCN makes us suffer for power and yet whether or not we make use of the light we have to pay the bills double of what we must have used. To make you laugh a bit NAIJ.com’s has come up with different palava we face with NEPA as Nigerians.

Politics / 7 Absolutely SHOCKING Secrets Aisha Revealed About Her Husband, APC by Crystal70200: 1:25pm On Oct 14, 2016
The First Lady Aisha Buhari has stirred up controversy after granting an interview to the BBC.

Excerpts of the interview were published on Tuesday, October 11 and in it, the first lady said some things that caught the attention of Nigerians. Aisha is reported to have made some comments about her husband, President Muhammadu Buhari and some members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The BBC plans to air the full interview on its programme, ‘Gane Mini Hanya’, on Saturday, October 15. But, report has it that Buhari has been mounting pressure on them not to air the full interview,

Here are the top shocking excerpts from her interview:

1. Buhari betrayed those who voted for him
According to her, Buhari did not give appointments to those who worked for his victory in the 2015 presidential elections. Instead, he appointed people who didn’t do anything for him. “This worries us a lot now. Because they believe they are the ones who suffered, but are no where today. People who do not have voters card are those who are given appointments and enjoying the government. “Some people are sitting down in their homes folding their arms only for them to be called to come and head an agency or a ministerial position.”

2. There is crack within the APC
Aisha said that some people have started causing division within the APC because they felt they laboured for the party and helped it to power in 2015. They believe they deserve to be compensated but have been shunned by the president. “Many people have started dividing the leadership of the APC and that is really making us feel not too good. “They are doing that because they felt they laboured for the party and deserved to be compensated.”

3. Buhari doesn’t know those working for him
The wife of the president said majority of those working with her husband were unknown to him. “Among all the people he selected, if he is asked among 50 people, he does not know 45. I don’t know them despite staying with him for 27 years.”

4. She may not back him at the next election
Though Buhari has not told her whether he would contest the 2019 election, the first lady may not support her husband at the next election if things continue the way it is. “He is yet to tell me but I have decided as his wife, that if things continue like this up to 2019, I will not go out and campaign again and ask any woman to vote like I did before. I will never do it again.”

5. The government has been hijacked
Aisha claims the government had been hijacked by a “few people” who are behind presidential appointments. She however, refused to name them saying, “You will know them if you watch television.”

6. She can’t say if her husband is in charge
The first lady was asked if President Buhari is in charge and her reply was, “That is left for the people to decide.”

7. She believes her husband has improved security
According to her, one of Buhari’s major achievements was to improve security in the north-east where militant Islamist group Boko Haram has waged an insurgency since 2009. “No-one is complaining about being attacked in their own homes. Thankfully everyone can walk around freely, go to places of worship, etc. Even kids in Maiduguri have returned to schools.”

Politics / 4 Main Reasons Buhari Is Visiting Germany Today by Crystal70200: 9:37am On Oct 13, 2016
This visit which begins today is scheduled to end on October 16, 2016. Below are the reasons for the visit:

1. Cooperation between two nations

One of the aims of the visit is to meet with German Chancellor, Angela Merkel on issues that border on better cooperation between Germany and Nigeria.

Femi Adesina, the special adviser on media and publicity to the president had this to say about that part of the visit:

"The president will confer with Chancellor Angela Merkel on issues of shared interests between Nigeria and Germany, including further cooperation on security, the humanitarian situation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and rehabilitation of the North-East, as well as trade and economic relations between both countries."

The problems of IDPs, Boko Haram attacks and the economic recession are ones Nigeria will find hard to solve without support, this will feature prominently in the discussions between the two heads of state.

2. Security

Following his visit with Angela Merkel, President Buhari will meet with President Joachim Gauck to discuss how to attract foreign investment to Nigeria.

Femi Adesina said in his statement: "Thereafter, the President, who will be accompanied by Governors Kashim Shettima of Borno State and Rochas Okorocha of Imo and representatives of the National Assembly, will meet with Federal President Joachim Gauck."

It is important to note that in February 2016, Mr Joachim Gauck visited Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos state, pledging that Germany will assist Nigeria with the technical know- how to successfully fight terrorism. This will also be part of the discussion with President Buhari.

3. Foreign investment

The third objective of the trip is stated thus by Adesina:

"In furtherance of the administration’s objective to attract more foreign investment and create economic opportunities in the country, President Buhari will participate in a Business Forum in Berlin with leading German companies already active in Nigeria and other prospective investors."

The Business forum in Berlin will likely include companies like Siemens, a multinational technology company in Nigeria and several others.

4. Nigerians in Germany

Before returning to Abuja on October 16, President Buhari will round up his visit by meeting with representatives of the Nigerian community in Germany.

This will help to deepen relations with Germany and build on the very cordial relations both countries enjoy in several areas of bilateral cooperation including the fight against terrorism, economic relations, rebuilding of the North east, support for IDPs, vocational training, energy partnership and cultural relations.

The visit hopefully will have a hugely positive impact on Nigeria, its security and economy.

Properties / MASSIVE Flood Hit Lagos, Ogun As 860 Households Displaced by Crystal70200: 11:47am On Oct 06, 2016
At least, 300 houses have been flooded and 860 households displaced in Lagos and Ogun states following the opening of Oyan Dam water, Punch is reporting.

Affected areas of both states are Agiliti/Maidan, Orile, Owode, Agboyi and Araromi communities in Ketu and Mile 12 areas in Lagos; and Akute and Warewa communities, as well as estates in and around OPIC in Ogun State. Several residents of the affected areas were seen vacating their homes for dry land as they blame the Ogun/Osun River Basin Development Authority (OORBDA) for not informing them before opening the Oyan dam.

“The flooding started about three weeks ago when people started calling that their communities were flooded. People have been evacuating their homes since then, while some others are trapped. If the situation persists, everywhere will be submerged. The government needs to come in. Isheri North GRA, for instance, was sold by Lagos State and some of the estates were sold by the Ogun State Government. There was supposed to be proper planning; but we have been left to our fate. Former President Goodluck Jonathan visited this area four years ago because of this same problem, but nothing was done after the visit.

“We are appealing to OORBDA to reduce the operating level of the dam to 54 metres. If the level is reduced, the reservoir will have more space to hold water and this flooding will be averted.” But The Managing Director of Ogun/Osun River Basin Development Authority, Mr. Akintunde Soyemi, said the flooding was aggravated by human activities. He said, “Ogun River is a big river cutting across three states with more than 20 tributaries one of which is Oyan Dam, which is the only one that is gated and whose release can be controlled.

“This year, we had much more run off; we only released 15 per cent now, which is done at a controlled rate and is not supposed to flood the downstream. It is flooding because it is not the only contributory river. Most of those flooded places are in the flood plain of Ogun River. The rule of thumb in constructing residences is that you must be above the level of the road, anywhere below such level will always be submerged.” He said the authority was working on controlling the flooding and that residents would see an improvement in the coming days.

Politics / We Will Start Hunting Soldiers If You Don’t Desist – Niger Delta Militants Warn by Crystal70200: 9:55am On Oct 06, 2016
The Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate (NDGJM) has issued a warning to President Muhammadu Buhari over the activities of soldiers in the Niger Delta region. The militant group that has claimed responsibility for series of bombing of oil and gas pipeline said it will not sit back and watch soldiers harass people in the region.

The Sun reports that in a statement issued by Gen. Aldo Agbalaja who is the spokesperson of the group, it warned the government to be prepared for a guerrilla if soldiers don’t desist from their military operation. The group also dismissed President Buhari’s threat in his Independence Day message to deal with militants. “In the face of an imminent failure, the Nigerian military is now resorting to very unwholesome practices, hounding and hunting people around, just to make it look like they are working indeed and justify the huge budget they have been allocated.

“Now, the Nigerian military is victimising and arresting even women in the name of the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate, just to cover up their ineptitude. What have women/wives got to do with militancy? The Commanding Officer 222 Battalion is beginning to over step his boundaries.

“However, we are using this message to warn you to stop intimidating and harassing our people, if your men continue troubling our people, we will be forced to adopt strategies that we had earlier decided against; your soldiers in all parts of our land will become an endangered specie, they will become targets of attack and if you push us to that resolve, you stand no chance against us.”

Health / Full Cure For HIV-AIDS Reportedly Discovered by Crystal70200: 4:11pm On Oct 04, 2016
Emerging reports suggest that British scientists could be one step closer towards finding a permanent cure for HIV-AIDS. Huffington Post reports that a 44-year-old social worker in London appears to be completely free of the virus after undergoing an experimental therapy technique.

The man was first given a vaccine which helped his immune system detect infected cells, and then took Vorinostat, a drug which is normally used in experimental cancer treatment trials.

The Vorinostat then activates dormant infected cells that would normally slip through the net allowing the body’s immune system to detect and kill every last infected cell.

In simple terms what this combination of treatments does is remove the camouflage that allows HIV to remain hidden and then shine a spotlight on it allowing the immune system to clearly identify infected cells and kill them. The researchers have said that there’s an extremely long way to go before they start throwing parties. For starters this is just one man in a trial that involves 50 people. All 50 will need to show similar responses to the treatment, and then even if they do they’ll need to be continually tested for the next five years to make sure the virus has been completely eradicated.

That said, this is promising news. For starters this method is essentially a complex and aggressive form of drug therapy, far less invasive and complex as a technique like gene editing.

Health / Cholera Outbreak: 6 Ways To Protect Yourself From This Disease by Crystal70200: 1:57pm On Sep 30, 2016
Cholera has remained a chronic illness despite all the major advances in research. This epidemic illness is still a challenge to the modern medical world. Recently, it was reported that an outbreak of the disease occurred in Lagos and Ebonyi which killed some people.

Although the disease may be asymptomatic or mild, but a severe cholera can cause death from dehydration (the loss of water and salts from the body) within hours if not treated. Here are 6 basic steps that can keep you from being a victim of cholera:

1. Drink and use safe water
Consumption of safe and clean should encouraged. Bottled water with an unbroken seal should not be an option for consumption. Water could also be boiled or treated with a chlorine product to keep it safe for drinking. Also use safe water to brush your teeth, wash and prepare food. 2. Wash your hands often with soap and safe water

2 Always make it a habit to wash your hands frequently.
Washing of hands often with soap and clean water could reduce the ingestion of bacteria from the hand to the mouth. In a situation where there is no soap available, scrub hands often with ash or sand and rinse with clean water.

3. Proper disposal of feces (poop), do not defecate in any body of water Solid excretory product evacuated from the bowels should not be done in sensitive areas, particularly water body areas. Defecating or having a sewage close to water could lead to the contamination. Therefore this can make the environment prone to cholera.

4. Proper preparatory of food, vegetables and fruits
Cooking of food properly, especially sea-foods. Ensure your food is properly covered to avoid contamination, while fruits and vegetables should be thoroughly washed before eating. However, avoid raw foods other than fruits and vegetables you have peeled yourself.

5. Clean up safely in the kitchen and in places where your family bathes and washes clothes.
Clean food preparation areas and kitchenware with soap and safe water and let dry completely before reuse.

6. Wash yourself, your children, diapers, and clothes, 30 meters (98 feet) away from drinking water sources.

Politics / Presidency Speaks About Presence Of Buhari’s Family In USA by Crystal70200: 1:44pm On Sep 22, 2016
– Nigerians are not happy over appearance of Buhari’s children at UNGA while Nigeria is in recession

– However, presidency clarified the issue saying that the first family didn’t use government money for their trip

The spokesman of President Muhammadu Buhari, Garba Shehu, has on September 21, Wednesday, reacted to the anger of Nigerians over Zahra and Halima Buhari’s presence at the ongoing United Nations General Assembly.

Buhari’s aide said that the presidential family used their own money to pay for their tickets, while he offered no proof of payment.

Mr. Shehu also denied to explain why they had to attend the UNGA. It is unprecedented for a Nigerian President to travel with his kids for the UNGA.

While it has been said that the Aisha’s delegation is privately financed, many Nigerians are not happy with her decision to go with her husband at a time when the country is in recession.

Aisha Buhari alongside her daughters Zahra and Halima accompanied President Buhari to 71st United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA.

While in New York for the annual gathering of world leaders, Buhari also attended series of meetings as well as side events, which are of significant interest to Nigeria.

Politics / Should Patience Jonathan Be Probed For $31.4m Fraud Allegation? by Crystal70200: 11:32am On Sep 16, 2016
Following the anti-corruption crusade championed by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, former first lady, Patience Jonathan has been shrouded in a $31.4 million corruption-related investigation.

In what might be considered an unprecedented move, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) went after the first lady of the incumbent president and froze an account connected to her making it impossible for her to access the $31.4 million in it while investigation goes on.

While some Nigerians have commended the anti-graft agency for the fearless move that will go a long way to wipe away corruption from the Nigerian system, others have described the move as a sort of witch-hunt as the former first lady has right to her money since she has not been formally charged with a crime.

The EFCC angle
The anti-graft agency revealed that the account was being fingered as one of those involved in an alleged fraud case before a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos but Mrs Jonathan’s counsel, Gboyega Oduwole has filed a case before the court, informing that her client is unhappy with the EFCC over the recent move to freeze the account.

Amajuoyi Azubike Briggs, an ex-presidential aide; Damola Bolodeoku, a former Skye Bank official; Pluto Property and Investment Company Limited and Avalon Global Property Development Company Limited had all been charged to court over their individual involvement in the fraudulent activities with companies without address.

Seagate Property Development and Investment Company Limited; Trans Ocean Property and Investment Company Limited, Avalon Global Property Development Company Limited and Globus Integrated Services Limited were also charged with the same offence. Like in the case of Governor Ayodele Fayose, the EFCC has insisted that it has a right to freeze accounts of persons suspected to have committed financial crime until the completion of investigation and the frozen account would be presented as an exhibit in court.

The Patience Jonathan angle
Following the restriction on her account, Patience demanded a court declaration that the EFCC breached her fundamental rights as a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by placing a ‘freezing order’ on the said accounts without any court order or prior notice to her.

A few days later, the former first lady wrote a letter to Ibrahim Magu, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) explaining that the $31.4 million found in her account is for her medical expenses.

In a letter through her lawyer, Patience claimed the money in the account was for medical bills and personal expenses.

“Our client has been operating the said accounts using the cards for her medical bill payments and purchases for her private purposes without any let or hindrance.

“Our client was therefore surprised when the said cards stop functioning on July 7, 2016, or thereabout. Our client immediately, thereupon, contacted Skye Bank Plc through our solicitors. It was only then that the bank officials informed our client that the said accounts were placed on a ‘No Debit Order’ following investigations and instruction from your commission and this is without notice to our client by either the bank or the commission.”

In light of this current controversy between Patience and the EFCC, a lot of discussions have started about whether the anti-graft agency has a right to freeze the account of the former first lady or no.

Do you think Patience Jonathan should be probed and her account frozen or not? Is any Nigerian above the law?

Health / Why Cancer Is Killing Nigerians And How To Avoid It by Crystal70200: 1:26pm On Aug 31, 2016
Cancer is the biggest killer in the world, accounting for more deaths than malaria, HIV/AIDS, heart diseases and tuberculosis combined. It is increasingly becoming a menace and assuming alarming proportion of deaths in Nigeria due to adoptions of western lifestyle – changing dietary habit from the traditional fibre rich diet, lack of exercise, consumption of processed food products and the culture of secrecy of the cause of death, including late reportage of symptoms to the hospitals.

Awareness of our modified lifestyle, what carcinogens are, minimisation of consumption of processed foods, importance of regular exercise and regular health check-up will go a long way to prevent the onset of cancer. General prevention of at least three hours a week exercise which is said to reduce the risk by 30 percent should be adopted by all, but more importantly, the over 40s. Below are other preventative measures:

Primary prevention – this is the first stage of cancer prevention involving the reduction and elimination of factors that can trigger mutation of cells, including relevant vaccination and tobacco control

Secondary prevention – this relates to screening and early detection/diagnosis, i.e mammography, Fecal Occult Blood Testing (FOBT), colonoscopy and smear test.

Tertiary prevention – this involves prompt diagnosis and treatment including effective therapy, symptoms management, avoidance of use of oral contraceptives and HRT.

Dr Amugo added that, “It is hard to fathom why the government allow foods marked `for export only` to be imported into the country. Common sense tells you that such food products are obviously not conducive for consumption by their own people, and yet we deem it suitable for our citizens. “To that end, the Federal government need to formulate a government policy that will prevent such foods to be imported into our country.”

Change of Lifestyle
Adoption of western lifestyles and technology can be argued to be most important culprits in the recent upsurge in cancer cases in Nigeria. Packaging our food products in hazardous synthetic materials made of carcinogenic compounds that melt in medium to high temperature has been another major factor. Our dependency on mobile handsets, laptops and other communication gadgets with the accompanying constant exposure to radiation is yet another factor.

Way forward
“The government need to invest vigorously in manpower and deter the culture of brain drain, where we export proficient doctors to other countries who benefit from their skills and expertise” “Effective diagnosis through the provision of modern mgedical equipments is also essential for a swift intervention. Erratic power supply is another hindrance to the utilisation of the few existing equipments for diagnosis and treatment. Good and consistent awareness program or campaign will surely go a long way too,” concluded Dr Amugo.

Food / 5 Fun Things You Can Do In Shoprite But Can't Try In A Regular Market by Crystal70200: 2:53pm On Aug 03, 2016
1. Window shopping is allowed in Shoprite
Hundreds of people stroll into Shoprite daily without buying a single item. They are allowed to walk into the shops within and see the goods and items displayed there. They could even talk to the shop attendants without buying the products eventually. Now let us move to the regular markets we have around; you know you are not allowed to move around a shop without buying goods from there. If you stress a market woman while bargaining when you know you would not be buying, you would get what you are looking for. Whenever you want to launch this idea, be sure you are not trying it in a market in Ibadan.

2. Your things are safe to an extent at the shopping mall
While you are parading the attractive shops within Shoprite, you can be sure your things are safe to an extent when compared to what could happen to you in a regular market. People make out time to dress up when they know they would be spending some time at the mall, they are not afraid to wear expensive things and look fabulous. You know this is something you dare not try in a regular market for the fear of being mobbed. Dressing elegantly to an open market could attract the wrong set of people who could steal your money or valuables while you are goofing around.

3. You could get embarrassed in an open market
If you stay too long in a particular shop in a regular market without buying anything, the shop owner would start to suspect you after a while. This is Nigeria, people are becoming conscious when it comes to security issues. You cannot afford to finger every item on the shelves without really being interested in buying them. You can do this while at Shoprite and no one would look at you funnily. But in a regular market, you could be tagged a thief and if you get unlucky, get beaten before anyone gets to hear your own side of the story.

4. Your husband could carry the goods while you pick items in a shopping mall
One of the luxuries of patronising a shopping mall like Shoprite is the fact that people mind their businesses and do not bother themselves with your affairs. You can go shopping with your husband while he pushes the cart for you. But if you do this in a regular market, you tend to get judged. Market women know each other and would always find a way to connect with the other sellers when it is time to gossip. You may end up being laughed at to the point of embarrassment. A thing like that is considered weird and inappropriate in the society.

5. You can take as many selfies as you want in Shoprite but not in a regular market
Regular markets are so rough you can be sure the pictures would not turn out well. In the shopping malls, you would have lots of beautiful backgrounds that would give you that posh feeling. If you stick out your selfie stick in a regular market, you would be stared at like some alien. The last thing you want to do is to gain the attention of the market women with their wading tongues. Remember the goons are out there too, the phone may disappear after your photoshoot.
