Nigeria is an "ally" and there is no real threat to American interests in the west African coast so it is sensible not to expend American ships on "'friendly territory"' with no superpower threat. A single US ship would take over the entire gulf of guinea and Nigeria would just look on powerless.
As for American posturing in other parts of the world, it is for the safety of humanity. Hate America all you want, she is the only responsible global power we have.
A world where china and Russia, northkorea and iran are left unchecked by American forces is not a world I want to live in.
