By overgrown do you mean heavy as in going a long time without shaving? If this is what you mean then I'll advise trimming first and then waiting at least 48 hours before fully shaving. This is due to the fact that heavy hair causes a strain on most shavers or razors and this could lead to tugging causing hair to become trapped in the skin. By trimming first, you've reduced the strain but your skin is still sensitive so you need to wait for the tension to go down. This is normally between a day or two, if you don't want to wait then applying shaving lotions that is made with Aloe works perfectly.

Or to shave in the foward growth direction(downwards) of the hair follicle.

It opens up the pores making it easy for hair follicles to glide out when it meets the blade. The reason the so called expert advised against shaving completely is due to minor abrasions that could come as a result of shaving too close but this is easily avoided by knowing how to shave properly!

What should be taught is the art of cleanliness not this crap. Shaving completely down there is good for enhancing intimacy and it gets rid of odor but most people don't know about antibacterial soaps/shaving lotions. Most people do not shave the right way, for example when dry shaving it's best to apply a small wash cloth dipped in hot water around the area before and after shaving.
