EducationWe Are Committed To Having Globally-competitive Workforce – AE-FUNAI VC by cyborgFUNAI(op): 6:23pm On Oct 17, 2018
The Vice-Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba said the University was committed to training and retraining of its staff in order to have a critical mass of globally-competitive, competent and knowledgeable people that would drive the university’s vision of becoming a world-class centre of learning and research.
The Vice-Chancellor made this known recently when he inaugurated the Frontline Liaison Officers drawn from all administrative and academic departments of the university, established by the Centre for Human Resource Development with the responsibility of identifying the skill and knowledge-gaps and training needs of staff and ensuring that the gaps were bridged through well-tailored capacity building programmes.

While speaking at the event which took place at the mini auditorium, Needs Assessment Building, Professor Nwajiuba noted with enthusiasm the noble initiatives and blueprints of the Centre aimed at improving work-related capacities of staff, stressing that the most important resource at the disposal of the University to drive its academic vision were its staff.
He maintained that the Centre for Human Resource Development was a necessity because most of the institution’s employees were fresh graduates with little or no cognate experience in the University system, and urged the staff to ensure they carry out their official responsibilities with zeal in order to excel in their chosen careers.
“You have to do your job with zeal because sweet from sweat endures, as a part of our University song said
“It is never too late to learn. There are so much you can do to improve yourself, and with that you take your place among the stars”, he stated.

The Vice-Chancellor also used the opportunity to charge staff to ensure they properly define their roles in the University in order to be able to perform it creditably well, adding that working in a university environment was quite different from working as civil servants in government ministries.

He further stressed the importance of attitude in the performance of staff and urged them to have a change of attitude, while also calling on the Frontline Liaison Officers to be conscious of the assignment they have been chosen to do.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the Director, Centre for Human Resource Development, Dr. Onyebuchi Chima, noted that his mission was to revitalize the Centre, adding that the human resource drives the vision of any organization.
He maintained that the Centre was set out to achieve its objective using the bottom-up approach, hence the need to establish the Frontline Liaison Officers with members drawn from all the Units in the University.
He further explained that the Centre has collected, collated and analysed the staff training needs, stressing that they would develop capacity building programmes to bridge the inherent skill-gaps in order to have competent and knowledgeable staff with the right attitude to add value to the University.

EducationStakeholders Call For Transformation Of National Food Systems To Prevent Hunger by cyborgFUNAI(op): 8:37pm On Oct 11, 2018
Stakeholders in the Agriculture sector of the economy have called for total transformation of the National Food Systems in order to prevent hunger and arrest incidence of poverty in Nigeria.
They made the call recently during the 2nd International Conference hosted by the Faculty of Agriculture, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alike, Ebonyi Sate, with the theme, “Transforming National Food Systems to Prevent Hunger” as part of their Food Security and Hidden Hunger series.

While delivering the keynote speech, the Deputy Director-General, International Institute for Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan, Oyo State, Dr. Kenton Daschiell, noted that it was possible to achieve zero hunger in Nigeria if the right systems were put in place. He also opined that zero Hunger would be attained in Nigeria when farmers grow what they eat and eat what they grow.

He further revealed that series of meetings have been held by the Zero Hunger Forum championed by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Benue, Borno and Ebonyi states, adding that these interactions have led to increased results in food production and extensive agricultural produce.

Dr. Daschiell also stated that Nigeria has done well in achieving some of the Sustainable Development Goals by providing nutritional food that reduces infant mortality among primary school pupils, bio-control products containing beneficial fungi that reduce afflation concentrations in groundnut and maize by 99% compared to untreated crops and increased growth opportunity for cassava products in the food sector. He further acknowledged that Nigeria has an enormous potential for industrialization through cassava processing.
He however pointed out some of the major bottlenecks that Nigerians were encountering in food production to include high production cost due to low yield, leading to lack of global competitiveness and lack of good road network and new technologies. And stated that for agricultural sector to close the yield-gap in produce they must involve new technologies and increase cassava competitiveness to fight hidden hunger in Nigeria.
Earlier while declaring the conference open, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba expressed satisfaction on the academic trajectory being charted by the Faculty of Agriculture of the University, adding that they have made the institution proud by being practical-oriented in the delivery of their academic brief and thereby enhancing food production.

He stressed that transforming national food system demands SMART policymaking and programme formulation which was the reason for the annual conference on Food Security and Hidden Hunger in the University. He advised the Government to think-out-of-the-box in order to identify new ways the country should go so that it would not be stocked in the 17th century policy model.
The Vice-Chancellor assured that students of the University would be trained to be productive, employable and employers of labour in the Agricultural sector, particularly now that there is a global effort to build a resilient and sustainable food systems for securing a healthy future for everyone.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman, Local Organizing Committee, Professor Dr. Johnny Ogunji, said that hunger may not only be evident in the quantity of food eaten; as you may eat a lot but still derive nothing from it. He stressed that the food sector has undergone rapid but unsustainable changes in the last few decades leading to changes in the food eaten, processed and marketed, which has led to high incidence of diseases such as diabetes, cancer, hypertension and different degrees of malnutrition among the people. He therefore advised the Nigeria Government to ensure the country makes progress in Agriculture in order to end all forms of malnutrition and make food systems more sustainable.

While welcoming the participants, the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Dr. Christiana Igberi said the University has taken the lead in the transformation of the Agricultural sector by creating several hotspots for capacity building, innovative approach and incorporating the indigenous knowledge and local content for adaptability in order to realize the stated goals. She informed the participants that the faculty has embarked on the production of cucumber, maize, pepper, tomatoes and other vegetables through its farm, which has been scientifically tested as safe product though not yet in commercial quantity due to lack of land.
She maintained that every student was meant to engage in practical agricultural activities to complement the theories learnt in class in pursuance of their vision to proffer solution to the alarming food insecurity in the country.
The highlight of the conference which was chaired by the Director of International Cooperation, Babcok University, Professor Cyril Nwagbuika includes displaying of some agricultural produce such as packaged cassava flour, packaged ‘fufu’, cucumber and others from the University Farm.

EducationAE-FUNAI Vc Commissions Guest House Built By Parents’ Forum by cyborgFUNAI(op): 5:02pm On Oct 05, 2018
AE-FUNAI VC COMMISSIONS GUEST HOUSE BUILT BY PARENTS’ FORUM
In a bid to develop a virtual campus community where staff and students live, work, learn and interact together, the Vice-Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, yesterday, inaugurated the Vice- Chancellor’s guest house constructed by the AE-FUNAI Parents’ Forum.
The AE-FUNAI Parents’ Forum is an umbrella body of parents and guardians of students of the University established in 2016. The Forum is a child of necessity geared towards bridging the palpable infrastructural gaps evident in the institution, which also have some adverse effect on the academic performance of students.

On assumption of office in February 2016, the Vice-Chancellor after diagnostic review of the infrastructural and security challenges facing the institution had elicited the support of parents and guardians of the students to assuage some of the developmental challenges. Since then, the Forum has become a worthy developmental partner, helping to provide lecture seats and important laboratory equipment, perimeter fencing and construction of staff quarters as well as the just-completed Vice-Chancellor’s guest house. In effecting these notable developmental strides in the University, the Forum on their own decided that fresh and returning students would pay a development levy of N50, 000 and N5, 000 respectively. It is through this pool of fund, which is solely managed by them, that the association provides succor to the University.

The major beneficiaries of AE-FUNAI Parents’ Forum interventions are the students who now have conducive lecture seats unlike when they had to learn and write examinations, sitting on blocks. The ongoing perimeter fencing of the University where the engineering students are garnering hands-on experiences and industrial exposures was to ensure the security of lives and property on campus and prevent the menace of intruders who might put the lives of students in danger. Also, the construction of staff quarters would ensure that most staff live on campus and thus provide the needed ‘parental protection’ for students who were hitherto left alone when staff leave the campus after close of work each day. The Vice-Chancellor has continued to emphasize the culture of “in loco parentis”, where students are seen and treated as ‘sons and daughters’, not just mere students.

While inaugurating the project, the Vice-Chancellor stated that he came to the University with the sole purpose of building it and would not relent in that regard, adding that though his time was limited he would not rest on his oars until the University becomes one of the best in the country.

He urged everyone not to relent but to continue to work with him towards the development of the University for a better learning community, stressing that though the University has no money, yet it must be developed without losing the acceptable moral standard.
“We are making progress and history will remember all our various contributions towards the development of the University
“Developing this University is urgent. We do not have the money but we must find ways to do it.”
The Vice-Chancellor further praised the AE-FUNAI Parents’ Forum for their thoughtfulness and forthrightness in supporting the University through their various intervention projects and called on all stakeholders to support the activities of the Forum instead of trying to sabotage it.

EducationAE-FUNAI Launches Radio Station by cyborgFUNAI(op): 11:32am On Oct 05, 2018
In a bid to groom students with the practical experience to make appreciable impact on the global economy on graduation, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, yesterday, launched its radio station, 104.7 AE-FUNAI FM.
Speaking during a test-broadcast to the University community, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba noted that the radio station was established to inform and educate members of the university community and its environs, train students of the University in particular, in modern broadcasting, stressing that students of Mass Communication would be the main beneficiaries of the station as it would be used for their hands-on training.

He also explained that as part of the University’s Corporate Social Responsibility, the station would broadcast daily news on Agricultural Extension Services in order to help members of the University host community, especially farmers to improve their businesses. He maintained that the radio station would boost the economy of its host community by developing and broadcasting programmes that are of great benefit to them, adding that it would serve the communities within and around the University.

The Vice-Chancellor further thanked the Zanders Foundation for donating the broadcast equipment being used in the station, promising that the station will in no distant time get its broadcasting license.
While speaking on the rationale for supporting the University, the Chairman of Zanders Foundation, High Chief Kenneth Zanders stated that zanders foundation is a non-governmental organization created to promote the broadcast media in Nigeria. He explained that the donation of the equipment for the establishment of the radio station was in support of the good works of the Vice-Chancellor, and called on the Organized Private Sector to take advantage of the opportunities in the University to invest in mutual benefiting areas.

Chairman, Committee for the establishment of AE-FUNAI Radio, Professor Dennis Akor, VC, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba and donor of the broadcasting equipment, High Chief Kenneth Zanders during the commissioning ceremony
He further assured that the station would receive National Broadcasting Commission’s operational license, adding that it will be powered through solar system in order to promote green energy in the University. He also explained that the station would be available on mobile app to ensure easy dissemination of information to listeners in any part of the world.

Expressing delight on the actualization of the project, the Chairman of the Committee for the establishment of the AE-FUNAI Radio, Professor Dennis Akor, noted that the broadcast equipment were donated two years ago, however the university needed to meet certain requirements for the establishment of a radio station before it could be commissioned. He stated that besides serving the University community, it would also be used to teach students the practical aspect of broadcasting.

The commissioning of the project was another milestone in the administration of Professor Nwajiuba, who has maintained that he was in a hurry to develop the University and make it a reference point in the comity of revered Universities in Nigeria and beyond

The Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Nweze Umahi has donated N40 Million for the construction of a Civil Engineering Workshop in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alikre, Ebonyi State.
The donation was a fulfillment of his promise in 2015, when the first Governing Council of the University led by Chief Engr. Anayo Onwuegbu paid him a courtesy call. The governor while receiving the Council, had advised the University to establish a Faculty of Engineering and Technology, and pledged a take-off capital of N40 million.
Presenting the cheque to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba at his office recently, the Governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Barr Samuel Okoronkwo, accompanied by the Commissioner of Education Rt. He explained that the State Government would continue to support the University to attain higher academic heights, and used the opportunity to express his satisfaction on the infrastructural renaissance being witnessed in the University since the advent of the Vice-Chancellor in the helm of affairs.

While expressing his gratitude to the Governor for living up to his words, the Vice-Chancellor noted that the idea of establishing the Faculty of Engineering and Technology in the University was first mooted by the Governor in 2015, adding that it was the catalyst for the eventual take-off of the Faculty in 2016.

The Vice-Chancellor stressed the commitment of the University towards running practical-oriented engineering programmes geared towards ensuring that students acquire relevant functional knowledge to be globally competitive on graduation. He also used the opportunity to call on other individuals and private organizations within and outside the State to support the realization of the vision of the University to become a world-class Centre of learning and research.
As a show of appreciation, the Vice-Chancellor directed that the opening statement of the University Academic Brief should state that it was the Governor that encouraged the University to establish the Faculty of Engineering and Technology
