OURS IS A CITIZENSHIP PROBLEM AND NOT LEADERSHIP There is too much emphasis on the need for good leadership without asking for equally good and responsible citizenship. Now see what happens: 1. A tailor will collect jobs that exceed his/her capacity and fail to deliver to his customers on time. He will lie repeatedly, switch off his/her or even disappear. No amount of threats would make them change. 2. Bus drivers will put a worn-out second hand tire on their vehicles, overload the them with goods and passengers and travel on a high speed. No amount of arrests or warnings would make them stop. 3. Police officers will collect bribes, make unnecessary arrests and ignore calls to emergency situations. Their vehicles dont have fuel always or there are no bullets to fight crime. No amount of budgetary allocation could change this. 4. A chemist will sell expired drugs on purpose. They don't care if patients die as long as they make money. No amount of police reports and periodic arrests by NAFDAC could change this. 5. A teacher got employed with a dodgy NCE certificate. He or she can hardly speak and write good English but they have certification in teaching and pedagogy from an accredited college. They don't deserve to be teachers but they lobbied for the job or even paid for it. No amount of public complaints and outcry would change this. 6. You lend money to a friend or family member based on mutual trust. They most often than not violate the terms and refuse to give you back the money. No amount of threats and police reports could help you. 7. Parents pay money at miracle centers for their children to pass WAEC and NECO. They hire someone to write JAMB for them and gain admission into the university or college. They graduate without having basic numerical and language competencies to be employable. No amount of warnings or strict invigilation would make desperate parents and students change their attitudes toward education. 8. A doctor or nurse will come to work late, shout at patients and treat them with disrespect. No amount of pleas would make them change this attitude. 9. A car dealer will sell you a used or accident vehicle as new. They disappear soon after you make payment. No amount of police involvement would make them stop this shady business. 10. A civil servant will come to work late, hide files of those who refused to give him or her money, or refuse to response to public information requests when accountability is required. No amount of public service reforms could change this. Yet, Nigerians are shouting that we have leadership problems, throwing names at one another and waiting for a Messiah to come to the rescue. People are waiting for leaders to change before they stop doing some of the problems listed above. They are blaming the fictional leadership for making them do those things. The truth is that we have more of citizenship than leadership problems in Nigeria. And unless we change these, we are likely going to continue debating the chicken and egg metaphor trying to figure out which one comes first! Victoronah1:You're a good people, I saw you explaining to one lady in another about the things you do to make money on Vimeo.... Interesting Now to the pride ish... Its normal at your age. It reduces as you grow older... This was because you started handling money at a very young age. If you check our young celebrities like Davido, Wizkid etc, they all have it. Its even now they're controlling it as they grow more matured. Advice: try from time to time to visit hospitals (settle some of the patients bills) burials and prisons (buy them food). Ps: baba, pls I'm interested in learning vimeo from you |
