NCAA REACTS TO HOUSE OF REPS., CALL FOR REMOVAL OF THE D.G *Says the call is preposterous *The reasons adduced for the call are based on falsehood, fallacies and misrepresentation of facts

The attention of Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has been drawn to Publication in some section of the media on Thursday 20th of December, 2012, on the Report of the House of Representatives Committee on Dana Crash with a recommendation to sack the DG of NCAA, Dr. Harold Demuren and bring criminal prosecution against him. We are not particularly bothered about the call for the sack and the call for criminal prosecution, but the reasons adduced for the call which are based on falsehood, fallacies and misrepresentation of facts. These are the fallacies we intend to address here for the interest of the nation's aviation sector, the flying public and its continued relevance before the international aviation community.
The House Report alleges that the DANA Air MD 83 aircraft type has been phased out all over the world, including the United States. Nothing can be further from the truth. For the records these types of aircraft are still very widely in use in most countries around the world, with the largest number found among airlines in the US. We make bold to say that the MD 83 aircraft type has not been phased out worldwide, as indicated in the list of countries still using the aircraft type listed below:
-Worldwide, 207 of the MD 83's are still in use there are in use in 21 countries-they include Afghanistan, Argentina, Bangladesh,, DRC, Croswell, Denmark, Egypt, Greece, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Romania, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, Ukraine, and the USA.
-American Airlines has 86 in its fleet
-Allegiant Airline 49
-Ryan International Airlines flying the oldest (27 years), indicating that age of aircraft has little correlation with air-worthiness the youngest is 16 years.Average age of the aircraft type-21 years In fact, US Presidential candidate in the last Presidential election, Governor Mitt Romney uses the MD 83 manufactured in 1990, the same year the aircraft in DANA fleet was manufactured.
The second issue raised in the report which needs to be properly addressed is that the NCAA does not have any licensed aircraft Inspector type-rated on the MD 83 aircraft. NCAA, indeed has Aviation Safety Inspectors comprising Pilots, and Air-worthiness experts who are trained on MD83 and effectively carry out day-day routine regulatory safety oversight on the aircraft.
Thirdly, the Report said the Country lacks Aircraft Hangar Maintenance facilities, to take charge of the maintenance of aircraft. NCAA has always been at the forefront of encouraging private investors to establish such facilities in the country. But what is important to note is that the NCAA insists on the religious adherence to the stipulated Maintenance Programme for all airlines as contained in the Manufacturer's Maintenance Manual (MMM) and NCAA Approved Maintenance Programme. We want to also emphasise that this mandatory Maintenance Programme is carried out at designated and NCAA Approved Maintenance Organisations (AMO) abroad for the purposes of achieving the highest standards of safety. This outside maintenance programme is carried out under the strict supervision of NCAA Safety Inspectors. So the question of the safety of aircraft operating in the nation's airspace, in spite of the lack of AMO's in the country is not in doubt.
Finally, the report alleges incompetence on the part of the NCAA's DG. It is important to note that the current DG came on board at a time when the nation’s safety record was at his lowest ebb, with series of disastrous air crashes. The resulted effect was that foreign airlines from America were banned from flying direct into the Nigerian airspace and vice versa for Nigerian Airline Operator's Aircraft. Today, this has become a thing of the past as the nation, under the astute leadership of the current DG achieved Category I Status which has also emboldened ICAO to place the responsibility of helping other African countries like Burundi, Mozambique, and Angola, amongst others on NCAA to meet ICAO Safety standards. In view of the fore-going, it is quite clear that whoever is calling for the sack and prosecution of the NCAA DG on account of the aforementioned falsehoods and misrepresentation of facts has clearly ulterior motives. As a matter of fact, Nigeria and NCAA, under the leadership of Dr. Demuren was about witnessing 6 years of free commercial aircraft accident with one million flights and 50 million passengers without any mishap before the unfortunate DANA crash.
Nigerians must note that to date, the legitimate accident investigation authority, the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) is yet to finalise its reports that will reveal the cause(s) of the DANA crash. It is therefore preposterous for anybody that lacks professional expertise in aircraft Accident Investigation is reaching unfounded conclusions on what and who may have been responsible for the accident.

That is why it could still fly. Paul Ryan's plane is 42 years old. The same age as him.

I just stumbled on some interesting news. The Mitt Romney's aircraft, a MD-83 built by McDonnell Douglas in 1990. The Dana aircraft was also a Boeing MD-83 and was manufactured in 1990 too. Even Paul Ryan's plane is as old as he is. I used to belong to the school of thought that planes that are very old are unsafe for flying. I guess I was wrong.

Dana Air has finally come back. I am glad that they made an effort to address the negative press about them. I hope they make the news for good from now on.

Dana Air on Wednesday began its test flight in preparation for the resumption of scheduled passenger flight operations.

The airline’s spokesman, Mr Tony Usidamen, said the test flights would be followed by demonstration flights.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) witnessed the test flight which took off from the domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, at about 4 p.m.

Usidamen confirmed that after the test flight, demonstration flights would follow, adding that it would finally lead to scheduled commercial flight operations.

According to him, the purpose of the test flight is to determine the serviceability of the aircraft ground equipment.

brokoto: if their parents gave them permission then who are you to question it? is it a crime to speak pidgin? is it illegal? what is wrong with it/ for your information i SPOKE pidgin right from birth. in fact in my house we either use our language or pidgin to interact. but i did not fail English in WAEC. my highest score in JAMB was actually in ENGLISH. the reason people fail WAEC these days is because they are simply not studying their books not because they call in at a 15 minute pidgin English programme.

My point is, Since you won't like to speak it in a formal environment, why engage our kids in it? And bearing in mind that these kids are very young. They might not be able to speak good english again. It's undastandable for the adults because they can differentiate, but not for kids.

drcyber: To be fair to mobitel, if you check their fair use policy, you will see that 30,000 has a 30G limit and 60,000 has a 60G limit. I stopped using them a few months back and so many people I know have stopped as well. They have been calling me to subscribe to a dedicated plan and offering me one month free if i subscribe but I refused. My response is simple, increase your fair use limit or lower your cost. Till then bye bye Mobitel.

Firstly, when Mobitel resumed their 4G broadband, I thought it was a very good idea. They started off on a good note, introducing unlimited packages for a year before they started introducing data limits.
The nonsense started happening in February. I was on a 15, 000 plan of 2mb/s, from June 2011 till february 2012 till they told me they had introduced the data limit of 20gb to it.
My siblings are heavy users of d internet and they download alot. When my subscription expired before the actual time it was supposed 2 expire in February, I called their customer care center and they told me there and then that there is now a data limit of 20gb on that plan i was on and that I had exhausted my bandwidth. I didnt complain and I managed to pay again since my siblings where out of the house for some months.
I continued paying for the next two months and they kept on cutting me off before the time. I didnt complain because I'm a very busy person and I dont get to use it until I get home from work. When my siblings came, I checked their mobitel website; www.mobitel.com.ng, and I looked for an unlimited plan. I saw an unlimited plan for 30,000 with a reduced burstable speed of 1mb/s and i decided to pay for it.
I paid on the 22nd of June and by the 1st of July, they had cut me off. I called them and they sed i had exhausted my data limit of 30gb. They said that plan had a limit of 30gb when I still checked their website today and saw unlimited plan.
I have a captured the screen. And I just want us not to patronize mobitel 4g again. We cant take this anymore from people that just rip us off. So absurd!
