Lovren was partly at fault but I feel moreno's lack of awareness was the key factor. Such mistakes will definitely be punished at this level.

Van Gaal explains Januzaj substitution

Louis van Gaal has explained his thinking behind the decision to play Adnan Januzaj in central midfield during the second half of Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
The boss introduced the Belgium international for Darren Fletcher in the 63rd minute as one of two deep-lying midfielders in his 3-5-2 formation. While the substitution did not yield a match-winning goal, it showcased the 19-year-old’s willingness to play out of position for the team.

“It is not usual that we have four injuries in midfield,” van Gaal told reporters. “Every club that has that, has a problem. That is why I played Januzaj in midfield because as a coach I want to win. I have said that we need creative passing and I thought Januzaj could provide that. That is the reason.”

When pressed further on the subject, van Gaal explained how Januzaj’s history of playing in central midfield as a young player gave him the edge over his fellow substitute Shinji Kagawa.

“Kagawa, I have tried to play him in that positon in the US and he could not fulfil my wishes and my philosophy,” the boss said. “We have spoken about that and he is more of a 10. Mata was playing at 10 and I thought I had to change the other players, which is why I chose to bring on Januzaj.

“It is because of creation. Kagawa can also create, but I asked Adnan to play there because of the lack of midfielders. When he played in Belgium, he played in midfield so I asked if he could do it for us. I said to him 'you are on the bench as a midfielder' because I want him to focus.

“He played there and you could see it's not so many times that he's played there. But he did his utmost and I cannot demand more.”

If only you knew the amount of criticism wenger got for using zonal marking system at set-plays last season, you wouldn't be talking like this.

But I don't want to blame him 'cos I have a problem with the marking system from set play. I don't see other teams doing so much man-marking near as much as we do. We run around with opponents around our box. It's easy for the opponents to lost us.

It happened to our defenders so many times last season but Dadehmola said it's the best system. I am not sure. If RVP wasn't watching his man (he too was lost by him man), he could have contested for the ball to prevent the opponent. There was no one too at the other post.

This is not to defend or blame anyone, but the system isn't okay with me.

So which system is the best? Zonal marking??

montelik: If we sign Di Maria and do not address the glaring imbalances in the squad, it will have the same effect as when we signed Mata and actually played worse in the 2nd half of the season. But I am no longer going to comment on this sham till the window closes.

I am not amongst those who believe we should just sign anyone who has quality for whatever price out of desperation, with out keep in mind our tactics, budget and balance of the squad. You don't spend a fortune of a player and then start permutating how to shoehorn him into the system, you spend a fortune a player whom you are either going to build the system around or whom you have confidence will fit or adjust to the existing setup.

Woodward will wreck this club, unless the Glazers wise up and hire a director football or some such, to take over some of the footballing decisions that are clearly over his head.

So Woodward now determines the players we should buy and the positions we should strengthen?

a Strootman or de Jong kind of player will balance out this team better than a Modric type.

I would have agreed only if we had a midfielder who's willing to control the tempo of the game and dominate proceedings. As we speak, we don't have such a player (unless Herrera proves me wrong). Mentioning names players like fat Anderson, kagawa (who can't protect the ball to save his life) and the 33year old carrick who is clearly outta sorts as possible solutions, seems odd to me.

SailorXY: Vidal's place in this team will primarily be a box-to-box, reason is simple - he's got energy to burn, he's capable in attack & crunchy in the tackle.

As you can see, vidal isn't a DM - the more reason why I feel the "we need a DM more than anything" statement should be de-emphasized!

SailorXY: if you'll select Modric ahead of Schweini in this current United team, what inference can be drawn from your choice?

It means I value the qualities of scholes (arguably the best midfielder of his generation) a lot. Having a modric who is very much similar to the man whose retirement is widely touted as the major problem in man utd's midfield, appeals to me greatly.

How's that the same with "I still believe in carrick screening the back four and we should invest in strikers instead"??

SailorXY: a midfielder who can dictate play with ball @ feet, we don't lack that {Herrera, Carrick, Kagawa, Anderson} can all do this effectively IF they partner midfielder who will get dirty & recover that ball for them {this we don't have @ all}.
