Timmytimmy: How will the Oil and Gas go dead? That is the heartbeat of Nigeria, sir.
Even if it happens, it will mean that an alternative SUBSTANCE has been found and guess what?
We're substance ENGINEERS.
Please, how much job opportunities are available for Elect Engrs in Oil servicing firms?
I raised a poignant point about how the worth of ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING cannot be truly grasped in Nigeria. Please state the viable companies that EEE engrs work in Nigeria. I'm talking about companies that do PURELY AND MAJORLY Elect elect jobs in Nigeria. I'm talking about mainstream electronics like the not-so-popular-like-before binatone.
You'd be shocked to find out they are not so much because technology hasn't really blossomed here. The few ones that once made their homes here have all gone due to inability to compete with international companies.
You've lost this fight, bro. Arguing against Chemical Engineering in one of the most naturally endowed petroleum states is a lost fight I'm going to stop the argument here not because I'm giving up buh cos none of us is ever gonna agree and come to a point. Both are very good and lucrative courses in Nigeria, we shouldn't be against each other, rather we should work hand in hand and make a better Nigeria. eh ehn!!!...I heard Chaimaka is back |

Timmytimmy: Dammy Dammy
Which country are we talking about na?
If you noticed what I've done so far, I've used locally generated information. All what you wrote up don't apply to Elect Engrs in Nigeria.
And as for the bolded, it shows you didn't read a word of what I wrote up there.
WE DON'T WORK ONLY IN THE OIL AND GAS SECTOR. THE FACT THAT WE WORK THERE MASSIVELY DOESN'T RESTRICT US.
The biggest grouse I have with Electrical Electronics Engineering in Nigeria is that it is all theoretical. I read the story of an EEE person who couldn't use a tester the other day. Funny as it seems, it's really not his fault because we don't have as much technology appreciation in Nigeria. Go to countries like Japan and China and watch high school children play around with elementary robotics when our Elect engrs keep doing circuit theory.
If you compare this to the Chemical Engineering field in Nigeria, you'll see the difference. Nigeria is one of the highest exporters of crude oil. Even with the current state of faulty refineries, we have a myriad of Oil and Gas servicing companies tthat are here to stay. 1 Addax Petroleum http://www.addaxpetroleum.com/operations 2 Chevron http://www.chevron.com/countries/nigeria/default.aspx 3 Conoco Philips http://www.conocophillips.com/ 4 Total http://www.ng.total.com/ 5 ExxonMobil http://www.exxonmobilafrica.com/Africa-English/PA/Operations/AF_OP_Nigeria.asp 6 Hardy Oil & Gas Plc http://www.hardyoil.com/Assests/nigeria_main.htm 7 Nexen Inc http://www.nexeninc.com/Operations/West_Africa/Nigeria.asp 8 Petrobras http://www.petrobras.com/ 9 Shell http://www.shell.com/home/content/nigeria 10 Statoil http://www.statoil.com/ 11 Afren Energy Resources http://www.afren.com/default.asp 12 Camac (Allied Energy Resources) http://www.camacholdings.com/contact/index.html 13 Conoil http://www.conoilplc.com/index-2.html 14 Equator Exploration Limited http://www.equatorexploration.com/operations/nigeria.aspx 15 Express Petroleum & Gas Ltd 11 Alhaji Babatunde Jose Street Victoria Island (234 1 261-5115) 16 Dubri Oil Limited 8 Gabaro Close Victoria Island 17 Amni International Petroleum Development Company Ltd http://www.amnipetroleum.com/index.htm 18 Famfa Oil http://www.famfa.com/ 19 Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation http://www.nnpcgroup.com/ 20 Nigerian Petroleum Development Company Ltd http://www.npdc-ng.com/index.php 21 Oriental Energy Resources Limited http://www.oriental-er.com/about/index.htm 22 Pan Ocean Oil Corporation Nigeria http://www.panoceanoilnigeria.com/ 23 Sahara Group http://www.sahara-group.com/index.php 24 Solgas Petroleum Limited 27/29 Adeyemo Alakija Street Victoria Island (234 1 262-0651) 25 South Atlantic Petroleum Ltd 105B Ajose Adeogun Street Victoria Island (234 1 2625516/7 26 Sunlink Petroleum Limited http://www.sunlinkpetroleum-ng.com/ 27 Brawal Shipping (Oil) http://www.brawalshipping.com/brawal/index.php 28 Intels Services Nigeria http://www.intelservices.com/ 29 Ladol http://www.ladol.com/ 30 Technip http://www.technip.com/entities/nigeria/index.htm 31 Snake Island Integrated Free Zone http://www.sifreezone.com/ 32 Department of Petroleum Resources http://www.dprnigeria.com/home.html 33 National Petroleum Investment Management Services http://www.napims.com/ 34 Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists http://www.nape.org.ng/ 35 Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria http://www.petan.org/petan/performance.html 36 CGG Veritas http://www.cggveritas.com/Contact.aspx?cid=266&lang=1 37 First Fossil Nigeria http://www.firstfossil.com/ 38 Global Energy Group http://www.globalenergyco.com/ 39 Mabon Limited http://mabonltd.com/ 40 Petroleum Geo Services http://www.pgs.com/Data_Library/West-and-South-Africa/Nigeria/ 41 Schlumberger http://www.slb.com/content/contact/geomarkets/eca/nga.asp 42 United Geo Physical http://www.unitedgeophysical.com/ 43 Fugro Nigeria Limited http://www.fugro-prodec.com/ 44 Survicom http://survicom.com/ 45 Ensco Drilling Company (Nigeria) Ltd 35 Maloney Street Lagos Nigeria 47 Noble Drilling http://www.noblecorp.com/Contact/Contact.asp 48 African Petroleum Oil Field Services http://www.apoilfields.com/ 49 Ana Industries Limited http://www.anaindustries.net/ 50 MI Swaco http://www.miswaco.com/Locations/ 51 Ariboil Company Limited http://ariboil.com/index.html 52 BJ Services Company http://www.bjservices.com/website/GBLocator.nsf 53 Ciscon http://www.cisconservices.com/default.html 54 Expro http://www.exprogroup.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=348&Itemid=373 55 Kasolute http://www.kasolute.com/ 56 Melvon http://www.melvon-ng.com/home.htm 57 Oil Data http://www.oildatainc.com/html/contact_us.html 58 Oil Test Services http://www.oiltestng.com/index.htm 59 Petrolog http://www.petrologgroup.com/aboutpetrolog.htm 60 Roxar http://www.roxar.com/category.php?categoryID=1432 61 Sowsco http://www.sowsco.net/ 62 Weafri http://weafriwellservices.com/ 63 WOG Allied Services Nigeria Ltd http://www.wog-allied.com/ 64 Zukus Industries Limited http://zukus.homestead.com/ 65 Amosco http://www.amosco.com/ 66 Bell Oil & Gas http://www.belloil.com/ 67 B.G. Imagine how much more the job opportunities will become available when SaiBaba makes the refineries more functional
They will be literally looking for Chemical Engineers. So what point are you driving at, that there is more employment opportunities for chemical Engineers than Electrical Engineers in Nigeria? Now am telling you that for all the companies mentioned above there are slots for Electrical Engineers cos Our touch is needed in your field and other fields too, Now imagine as many companies in other fields too, they'll also need electrical Engineers for one reason or the other, we're like indispensable thereby paving way and a lot of opportunities for us. God forbid, let's assume the Oil & Gas sector goes daed today, what will be the fate of most chemical Engineers in Nigeria, what am saying is that you guys are restricted, unlike Electrical Engineers who function in various fields. shey you get my point |

Timmytimmy: Hehehehe. The problem with this your point is simply,"should a fresher's uncle be the authority for determining which of the careers is more viable for employment?"
You know, there's a common misconception people have about Chem Engineering, Petroleum Engineering and Petrochemical Engineering. They think these names are just synonyms. Well, they are not. My dad's friend once told me that I should have chosen Elect because the petroleum sector can't take Everyone. An average person can guess what Elect Engrs, civil engrs or even Mech engrs do but they can't guess what Chem Engineering is about because the name doesn't give away much. We do so much more than petroleum, sir. We deal with substances, any substance at all. That's why it is heavily economically relevant especially if you are from a school like OAU.
Oh well, I'm sure that guy would leap for joy if he saw the statistics up there.
You have no point here.
I'm going to post the places chemical engineers work in a bit. You'll be shocked to find that we compete for jobs even with Food Scientists from Cocacola,Guinness, Unilever and the rest.
In OAU, we will do our IT in two different companies because one company doesn't help much cover what the course entails.
My friend who graduated last year did her IT in both OANDO and a Food processing company. Now that's where you're getting it wrong, everyone thinks Elects is all about electricity and wires, meanwhile there is a lot more than that, people cant see the real picture of what its about. Elect is a very wide and versatile field which provide many opportunities for people, in fact an Electrical & Electronics Engineer can work in an oil & gas company, as there no engineering field that does not require the touch of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Besides its very easy to stand alone as an Electrical & Electronics Engineer unlike in Chem Engr where you guys are all focused on the oil & gas sector which we even have a slot there. I took my time to study the salary scale of Electrical & Electronics Engineers lemme share what I found with you Starting salaries for newly graduated electrical/ electronics engineers are in the range of £21,000 to £29,000. Salaries for PhD holders may be higher. Experienced electronics engineers can earn between £35,000 and £45,000, with more senior engineers earning between £40,000 and £55,000. Highly experienced engineers can earn in excess of £65,000. Chartered engineers tend to earn higher than colleagues who aren't chartered. Salaries vary from company to company, with some sectors attracting higher salaries due to demand. Hours of work can vary and this may affect the final salary. A 40-hour week is typical. However, the commercial pressures associated with electronic design mean that extra hours during evenings and weekends may be required at busy times in order to meet deadlines. Contract staff are often recruited to meet peaks in workloads. Work usually takes place in a laboratory or office environment, although some projects may require you to work in workshops, factories, or even outdoors. Self-employment and freelance work are sometimes possible for qualified engineers with a good track record and experience. Short-term contract work is possible, and is often arranged through agencies. |

Timmytimmy: Lemme win this argument before it begins.
According to "a critical analysis of the human output of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Chemical Engineering Department", a research carried out by Adetunji, A.O. (2013) - a final year student of the Chemical Engineering Department, it was reported that the Department has produced up till date a total of 1,514 alumni with 1,280 males and 234 females. The employment spread is as follows: about 44% of the alumni work in the Engineering field with about 65% of them working in the oil and gas sector about 15% are in the academic, about 11% are in the banking sector, about 15% are in other industries (which include Food, Telecommunications, Cement industries etc.), about 2% are in government while about 13% fall into other categories which include entrepreneurs, consultants and managers.
Knock Out. Guy take it easy na, so because of this small argument you took a quick research on Google and Wikipedia... Anyway this was what I found on jarushub about a fresher lamenting cos he was given chem Engr. Your posts motivated me to obtain OAU pre- degree form, sat for the exam and was admitted. I keep myself familiar with your posts concerning OAU during the program because I do get inspired by them. I sat for OAU post jamb during the program and I was successful both in post JAMB and the pre-degree programme. I opted for Chemical Engineering, now OAU has released cut-off marks; my aggregate score was 284.5/400 and the merit cut-off was 255. I was far above the cut-off mark, I told my uncle about this good news but he wasn’t that happy about my course (Chemical Engineering), and he said I should have applied for a course like Electrical/Electronics Engineering which have a better and wider chance of employment than Chemical Engineering. He said Chem Engineering is a bit narrow because most of them want to work in oil companies, but an EEE grad has a better chance of gaining employment easily compared to the Chemical Engineering guy. I am thinking of changing the course when we resume but it’s hard for me to make decision because I am very confused. source: http://www.jarushub.com/torn-between-chemical-and-electrical-engineering/ |

There is difference between an Electrician and an Electrical Engineer, Electricians fix and repairs Electronics, they work on ready made inventions, buh the Engineer builds what the Electrician fix, the Engineer makes the circuit. Its highly sardonic, disheartening and leaves me bewildered how people compare an Electrician with an Electrical Engineer even when the difference is like heaven and earth.
