Car Talk / Re: Japanese Or German Cars- Which Do You Prefer And Why? by danbasco(m): 12:06am On Oct 23, 2013
It's a misnomer to begin to compare German and Japanese cars of the same class. These two brands cannot be appropriately compared.

German cars, like my mechanic will call them, are pressure cars. They are built for stamina, power and durability. They are strong and rugged. They are cars you can wake up and drive from down south to far north without servicing. They are dependable and are not affected by weather.

But the efficiency of German cars are not without a price and consequence. German cars are not economic cars. You have to have a good income to be able to maintain them. They are costlier, have a higher fuel consumption, more expensive parts and lower 2nd hand value. Higher CO2 emissions.

Japanese cars are cheaper and more efficient cars. They have the best fuel economy. The parts are cheaper. Maintaining a jap car is more budget friendly. The 2nd hand value is higher than German cars.

So your choice of a best car should depend on your budget and lifestyle. If you travel a lot, a German car is best for you. It's good for long distances and the shock absorbers and suspension are good for the bad roads in naija except the fuel economy. If your lifestyle is mainly withing the city with less travelling, a Japanese car is best to move around with in the city. #megawatt

Education / Re: Medical Student: Lets Meet. by danbasco(m): 12:26pm On Oct 16, 2011
@PSamuell, your observations and suggestions have been noted. However I want to say that this issue is also as a result of lack of equipment to practice with.

A Prof. In my surgery unit said, ", in the '70s after training abroad, he could practice, and then he travelled out to S.Arabia and then returned recently but cannot practice again due to unavailability of equipment.

Neuromed/surgery is one area that requires so much skill/technique but how many CT scans, MRIs do we have in Nigeria?

Its is good that you are pro-neuro. Pls continue the sensitization. Thanks
I will also like to know your designation,

Abattola:

Pls i ve just bn offered admin by oau 2 study mbbs.pls wats is it like.your "advice".and encouragement word my email is,
Congratulations on your admission to study medicine in OAU.

My advice for you:
you may have already heard that there is so much reading in medicine. This is so very true. You will have to read as if your life depends on it, of course your life in medical school depends on it.

It is not true that medical students are boring and dont have a social life. It depends entirely on the individual. It is all about planning you life daily/weekly and making out time for everything.

Time management is very important. Dont waste your time on frivolities. Plan and make use of your time judiciously.

Dont live with the idea that u have to read all the time even though sometimes you will always feel you havnt read enough.

Have your rest sufficiently, sleep well, eat well and study well. Allocate time for everything and do just what you have to at such times.

You do not have to wait till it is time for mbs exam before you start reading because you will not have sufficient time to cover up all you have to read.

Check down the thread for info on text books. You do not necessarily have to own all the books on a course. This depend on which you will find easy to understand and your lecturer. Pls talk to a senior colleague

Take the yr1 class(pre-med) and all yr1 courses very seriously because in most schools now, you will not be allowed to proceed to yr2 & yr3 (pre-clinicals) without passing all your courses.(diff. Schools have different condition)

attend all your lectures, practicals and do all assignments.

Find and make friends with senior colleagues who are doing well and can provide you with useful materials and info.

Always obtain a course outline and use it in studying to avoid studying aimlessly

acquire and use past question papers to study and prepare for exams. Questions are bound to be repeated in one way or the other.

Different lecturers have different patterns, so you have to understand your lecturers individually and try to know what they are usually interested in and the pattern of thier question and how they like the answers to be written. Senior colleagues can help you on that

Pray fervently for all they that labour do so in vain except God blesses their deed and grants them Grace.

I hope other medics will stop by to add their own pieces of advice, this is not all, but all I have time for.

Best of Luck

@ all, nice thread.my younger sister is interestd in studying medicine.hw many mbbs exams will she write during d 7yrs and in what yrs will she write d exams?.
Good ambitions your younger sis' has got. Studying Medicine is actually 6yrs and not 7yrs. The 7th year is for house Job(housemanship) and she would be earning money then. There will be 4 mbbch exams in all written at the end of 3rd, 4th, 5th years and final Mb at the end of the 6th year. There maybe a slight variations in different Nigerian Universities. I hope I have answered your question.

please i need an explanation for this event of my life. A little deviation from the main subject though.

while doing nysc, as a class teacher, a student of mine was reading a book while I was teaching. After calling the boy's attention for the third time, I attempted to seize the book from him. He resisted strongly and almost fought me in my class and then jumped out through the window.

I didnt understand what happened. I got upset and threatened not to enter thier class again. All the student sat quietly, pretending not to know what was going on. Shortly, a little girl managed to whisper to me that I couldnt have touched the book. That I was not clean. That was when it actually began to make sense to me. The boy had been reading a quran and I was "unclean" to touch it. I gave up on the matter and forgot about it all.

When i mentioned the matter in the staff room, a few teachers just giggled, no response. On my way returning from school that day, walking along the narrow path, I almost got lynched. It took the intervention of my fellow corpers to save me.

What actually did I do that almost cost me my life? Can somebody please tell me??

Seanpeters:

someone should advice me on the best preparatory approach to passing mb once with ease.

seanpeters, tis happens to be a common challenge facing med.students. If your school uses cumulative assessment for medstudent which i believe they do then you would agree that your "cums" as we call it is very important.

Im my school, mb exam is 60% while semester tests, exam, assessments etc are just 40%. Wat ever u score in both adds up to your final score in mb, and more importantly, pass mark is 50%.

BUTTOM LINE: MB does not start d day time table for mb is published. Mb starts from the beginning of the semester and every test and prior exam counts and adds up to your performance. do your best to maintain as much high score as possible in all courses during the semester work such that you will require just a little more effort to add to mb.

Remain blessed

ersonally since the period he sacked Akwa ibom indigenes from
working in cross river then he had crossed the line. When he
starts campaigning he should forget about Akwa ibom since you
cant eat your cake and have it. NONSENSE"

@hobat4cash, needless to enquire. its obvious you are from AKS. its ok u stated your views here are personal. I dont intend for us to make this an AKS vs CRS feud. the issue under contention is Nigeria.

what was the designation of the akwaibomites that were sacked? which establishments or govt parastatal were they serving? how many states in nigeria do non indigenes work in the state civil service? it is only CRS. how many cross riverians live or work at all in uyo or any part of AKS in any govt office, local, state or federal? the akwaibomites are all over the place. its not even enough for them talkless or a non indigene.

in federal govt parastatals in CRS,AKS,Abuja and all catchment areas, crossriverians do not occupy up to a quater of thier quota. akwaibomites occupy all including thiers. so now wat are your grievances? that the gov sacked ilegitimate employees from its civil service to allow for its indigenes!

pls brace up yourself and think right. thanks
Politics / My resignation from the PDP....Donald Duke by danbasco(m): 8:52pm On May 03, 2010

The Chairman
Peoples’ Democratic Party of Nigeria
Cross River State Chapter
Cross River State
Calabar

My Dear Chairman

LETTER OF RESIGNATION FROM THE PARTY

It is with a dissonant mix of relief and regret that I formally tender my resignation from the Peoples ’ Democratic Party (PDP).

When in 1998, we came together and forged a vehicle destined (as we thought at the time) to carry forward our beloved country ’s hopes and dreams, there was a sense of being on the cusp of something that would endure.

That has not proved to be the case. Since then, a lack of commitment to the purpose and focus of the Founding Fathers of our party and our country has emasculated the PDP.

The party, in its present evolutionary state, has become dysfunctional, unable to articulate a road map and lead
Nigerians on a clear and concise path to national renewal. Faithfulness and fervor have been dissipated by a seamless stream of internecine factional warfare.

I leave behind friends, many with whom I shared sincerity of purpose but, regrettably, no longer share commonality of purpose. They shall in future be friends outside the party
rather than friends within it, but always friends first. Our politics must be big enough for us to differ as we cohabitate.

My former colleagues, I wish you and our beloved country well. For my part, I shall not fail to rise to the challenges and opportunities that the twenty-first century continues to hold out to our country. I shall always be mindful to speak truth to our circumstances and our condition.

Please communicate my resignation to your fellow members of the State Executive Council.

I am happy to remain,

Yours faithfully,

Donald Duke

there are lots of expartriates living and working in Nigeria, the lebanese, indians, germans etc, many of them speak horrible english with accents and intonations perculiar with their languages but somehow we admire them.

how come we then mock on our own people from other or our own tribe who have accent to Nigerian languages? it just dont make sense.

its not unusual to experience such issues due to the fact that the phone was just recently released & the initial firmwares usually tend to be buggy. .there's always issues with hardware but they get fixed in later productions & firmware updates. . .

thanks Dragnet, but why is like that, opinions say that N96 was whacked out, so why didnt they correct all the errors in making N97? which later productions do you mean? is it later productions of the same N97 or newer/higher models? do you also imply that i can fix the issues by updating the firmware or i'd rather wait for later productions? i just love this fone so pls understand. its why i need some convincing b4 buying it.
thanks thanks

NICKNAMES
If Laura, Kate and Sarah go out for lunch, they will call each other Laura, Kate and Sarah.
If Mike, Dave and John go out, they will affectionately refer to each other as Fat Boy, Godzilla and Four-eyes.

EATING OUT
When the bill arrives, Mike, Dave and John will each throw in $20, even though it's only for $32.50. None of them will have anything smaller and none will actually admit they want change back.
When the girls get their bill, out come the pocket calculators.

MONEY
A man will pay $2 for a $1 item he needs.
A woman will pay $1 for a $2 item that she doesn't need but it's on sale.

BATHROOMS
A man has six items in his bathroom: toothbrush and toothpaste, shaving cream, razor, a bar of soap, and a towel.
The average number of items in the typical woman's bathroom is 337. A man would not be able to identify more than 20 of these items.

ARGUMENTS
A woman has the last word in any argument.
Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument.

FUTURE
A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband.
A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife.

SUCCESS
A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend.
A successful woman is one who can find such a man.

MARRIAGE
A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn't.
A man marries a woman expecting that she won't change, but she does.

DRESSING UP
A woman will dress up to go shopping, water the plants, empty the trash, answer the phone, read a book, and get the mail.
A man will dress up for weddings and funerals.

NATURAL
Men wake up as good-looking as they went to bed.
Women somehow deteriorate during the night.

OFFSPRING
Ah, children. A woman knows all about her children. She knows about dentist appointments and romances, best friends, favourite foods, secret fears and hopes and dreams.
A man is vaguely aware of some short people living in the house.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
A married man should forget his mistakes. There's no use in two people remembering the same thing!
SO, this is for the women who have a sense of humour and who can handle it ,  and to the men who will enjoy reading it.[/b]

The chairperson of the University of Ibadan branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ademola Aremu has said the Federal Government is responsible for the prolonged ASUU strike.

Mr. Aremu said the decision of the government's team to ‘walk out' of the negotiation process added to the prolongation of the strike.

The lecturers held a rally on Monday to sensitise the public about the essence of their protracted strike and why they think the government was consciously undermining public education institutions.

"It is over three months now that Nigerian universities have been on strike. But the people in government do not feel it because they do not have their children in the country. They would rather take them abroad to study. That is why they could afford to allow the universities to be closed for more than three months," Mr. Aremu said.

He enjoined the public to call on the Federal Government to sign and implement the existing agreement between it and ASUU, saying that rather than ask the lecturers to call off the strike, they should tell the government to agree to their demand.

The union leader said both ASUU and the government teams shifted ground from their respective original positions to arrive at the content of the agreement.

He said: "We were on strike when the president assumed office in 2007. He invited us, talked to us and asked us to go back to work, promising to act on the grievances. As a mark of honour for him, we called off the strike then. But, unfortunately, we are on strike on the same issue now. We will not be deceived anymore. Let them sign the agreement and we will call off the strike immediately."

The rally was supported by members of the National Association of Nigerian Students and other unions in the university.

Insensitivity of the government Flaunting banners, fliers and leaflets of different sizes and colour, the protesters chanted anti-government songs and slogans to deride the alleged insensitivity of officials to the plight of the lecturers and their call for a better education system in the country.

Representatives of NANS, who featured prominently at the rally, threatened to storm the National Assembly and disrupt their proceedings if the government fails to act fast and decide on the issue of education.

Monsuru Adeyemo, NANS chairperson in Oyo State, said students decided to join the ASUU members in the rally to express their worries over the way government is handling issues of education.

Mr. Adeyemo said if action were not taken fast to address the issue, the Nigerian students would organise to disrupt the forthcoming uder-17 FIFA world cup scheduled to take place in Nigeria.

BabaTony:

I think the only solution is for the Federal Government should compensate Cross River for losing Bakassi and their littoral status, as for the 76 wells they have always been AKS property, they are sister's state's but that should not mean, taking from one state wells and giving the other just because one is richer than the other. Akwa Ibom has a big stake in Cross river, but the rule of law should be in effect first,

wats informs your opinion that the 76 oil wells "have always been AKS property? if it HAS ALWAYS BEEN AKS PROPERTY, then how come its just becoming an issue. why has CRS been getting revenue from same. I want to quote the Gov of AKS. "the baseline used by Admirality (consultants to the National Boundary Commission) relied too much on micro-geographic features commonly described as local phenomena. such phenomena are constantly changing because of COSTAL EROSION". he added that, , "this heavy reliance on boundaries has taken 70 oil well THAT USED TO BELONG TO CRS INTO AKS." so my bro it wasnt originally for AKS. It is understood that the same problem has similarly taken some oil well from AKS into Rivers State, here is a lot more beyong the scope of this forum. we only hope and pray the Feds do just justice.
