​Arsene Wenger is reported to have lost his temper at his Arsenal squad at the club's training ground in the aftermath of the 3-2 home defeat to Olympiakos on Tuesday, reported the ​Mail.

Wenger - who is not known for being one to raise his voice - reportedly let all his anger and frustration out on his squad at their London Colney base on Wednesday. He's said to have accused his players of lacking the passion and desire to win big games and isn't happy with the work-rate, intensity and attitude of his players.


Arsenal lost the game in midweek despite equalising twice against the Greek side at the Emirates, and Wenger himself has come in for criticism after fielding David Ospina - who dropped the ball past his own line for the second goal - in place of Petr Cech.

But while fans and pundits have been calling out for Arsenal to add players with the very same work-rate and attitude that Wenger expects from his team in certain positions, the Frenchman has always thought his current crop had that in them themselves. Their failure to win the Olympiakos game though leaves Arsenal's hopes of qualification from the group hanging by a thread.

Arsenal were beaten by Dinamo Zagreb in the first game in the group, and they were expected to brush Olympiakos aside and move back into contention for qualification. That didn't happen however as the visitors capitalised on some poor defending, and Arsenal now face back to back matches against Bayern Munich and a distinct possibility of having no group points after four games.

Former Arsenal player Nigel Winterburn told ​talkSPORT that Wenger will undoubtedly have been frustrated with his side following defeat, though he was speaking at a time before the story of Wenger losing his temper broke within the press.

He said: “He will be immensely frustrated with his team at the moment without actually telling them.

“When I look at the squad, they’ve got enough quality but they haven’t started as you would expect Arsenal to start.

“It’s a combination of things for me, they haven’t hit top gear in terms of creating chances and their attacking flair has certainly not been consistent as last season. Defensively it looked as if last season they had some organisation but they’ve started to wobble again this season.

“The balance in the team isn’t quite right for some reason. It’s not functioning to its full capacity.”

Arsenal next play Manchester United on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho was delighted that Chelsea made a winning start to their Champions League campaign on Wednesday, but said he was not happy that Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal had all lost their opening matches in this season's competition.

Chelsea, who have made a poor start to the defence of their Premier League title winning only one of their opening five matches, cruised to a 4-0 win over Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv at Stamford Bridge.

They were the only one of the EPL's four contenders to win after Manchester City were beaten 2-1 by Juventus and Manchester United lost 2-1 to PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday.

Arsenal were also beaten 2-1 at Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday.

"I think it is sad and bad and I am not happy about it," said Mourinho. "I want Man City, Man United and Arsenal to lose in the Premier League but I don't want them to lose in the Champions League.

"It is not good for us. Season after season, it is difficult for English teams to be successful. At the start of the week if you can make 12 points (with all four winning) and you make only three, that is bad news."

Although the group stage has only just started, English clubs' records in Europe's top club competition in recent seasons has been patchy and could impact on how many teams get spots in the tournament.

England, Spain and Germany currently have four clubs eligible according to the coefficients Uefa use to determine how many clubs a country is entitled to enter into the competition.

There are five Spanish clubs this season as Sevilla entered as winners of last season's Europa League.

The top three clubs in the Premier League advance directly to the following season's group stage, while the team finishing fourth enters the playoffs.

No English club has won the Champions League since Chelsea in 2012, which was also the last season an English club reached the final.

None reached the quarterfinals last season and the EPL's right to four places could come under threat in two years time from Italy, their nearest challengers in the coefficient table, who currently provide three teams for the competition.
