The Nigeria Railway Corporation on Wednesday commenced its maiden free trial run aboard the Abuja-Kaduna standard gauge rail track. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the corporation took delivery of three 80-passenger capacity standard gauge coaches, one 56- passenger capacity executive coach and one Parcel/Guard van coach on March 2. The trial ride which took off from the corporation’s Idu Station in Abuja at 8.27 a.m. traversed the NRC stations at Kuchibon, Asham, Jere, Gidan, Rijauna, Dutse, Kakau and arrived in Rigasa in Kaduna at 12.42 p.m. An individual standard coach which is 1,437 mm as against the 1,067 mm of the narrow gauge in width has a 57.2 tare weight with 150 km/h speed. Mr Fidet Okhiria, Managing Director, who described the trial as successful, said that the purpose was to perform strategic inspection and attract passenger traffic. ``It is the first time we are running passenger train on standard gauge and that makes it unique. I can say so far, so good, the ride was smooth.

She continued: "since the age of 13, I've been experiencing painful monthly periods. But now, after a series of Bible studies and prayers with brother Jimmy in his house, my monthly periods have stopped for more than 3 months now. No more pain, no more menstruation. You can see I'm even getting fatter and prettier. We are now starting to pray seriously about the small problem of vomiting, especially in the morning. Praise the Lord". The whole church was silent! The scarcity of tomato in Nigeria is still ongoing – The crisis has now fueled border smuggling of the crop – The alarm was raised by the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) A report by New Telegragh indicates that the current scarcity of tomatoes in Nigeria has fueled smuggling of the crop from neighbouring countries like Ghana and Cameroon through land borders. The alarm was raised by the chairman of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Lagos state chapter, Otunba Femi Oke, who stated that the shortage of the staple food had increased smuggling of the product into Nigeria. Tomatoes prices has gone up to over 100% READ ALSO: 7 reasons why FG should not ban the importation of tomato paste He revealed that despite tomatoes being in the list of 41 items prohibited by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for importation, many Nigerians are now venturing into importation of the crop more of it ever before. He said: ”Neighbouring West African countries like Ghana and Cameroon are actually benefiting from this right now.A whole lot of farmers are out of business. ”In the meantime, people are coming up with ways of cooking without tomatoes because tomatoes are a staple here. I went to the farm and I saw the devastation. It was like the biblical plague of the locusts that devastated Egypt. ”There was no green left. Moreover, the moths come like thieves in the night; you don’t even know until morning what they’ve done.” Meanwhile, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) have redoubled their efforts to curb the influx of tomato paste into the country. NAFDAC had already given hint that it might ban the importation of tomato paste from China following a startling revelation from a research carried out by one of its subsidiary unit – Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (FSAN). FSAN research revealed that out of 316 packs of tomato pastes purchased in Lagos and tested, 218 of them had less than the minimum requirement (28 per cent) of tomato in them. The minimum requirement specified by the Codex Alimentarius Standards and Nigerian Industrial Standards is that tomato pastes should have at least 28 per cent tomato content. Tuta absoluta, popularly known as ‘Tomato Ebola’, a pest responsible for massive destruction of tomato, has invaded some states in Nigeria. The federal government made this announcement on Tuesday, May 24, while also disclosing that Nigeria spent about N80bn ($400m) annually on importation of tomato paste, with many of the imported products appearing to be counterfeit.

Paulina who was abducted by Boko Haram said members of the group would beat them sometimes – Paulina managed to escape from the terrorist – She said she was forced to marry a terrorist and she is pregnant with his child Paulina Jabina a young girl that was abducted by the Boko Haram sect who managed to escape has narrated the ordeal she and other girls kidnapped by the sect go through. In an interview with Leadership, Paulina said she was in Sambisa forest for a year before she escaped. She said the treatment from the terrorists was terrible as they were sometimes beaten. READ ALSO: President Buhari vows to eradicate Boko Haram from Nigeria “We really suffered a lot and we passed through a lot of tribulations to the extent that I thought I would never survive the ordeals. We suffered degrading and dehumanising conditions as we received a lot of beating, we mostly stayed with hunger and most times living on fruits. The only time we got something to eat was when the insurgents raided communities and even at that they usually gives us small morsels which we cook in order to survive. “With the success Nigerian Troops are making over the insurgents, the Boko Haram insurgents are now in complete disarray because at a point, we heard their leader saying that he was considering negotiating with the government in order to release the Chibok girls and also heard him a number of times, regretting his actions. Most of the abducted girls have been married off to the Boko Haram fighters while a number of them were sent on suicide missions but even at that, some strong hearted women refused to change their faith.” She said when the army cut their food supply; they were left to starve for days. “I am glad I escaped but I will tell you that my escape is more of a divine provision than self-effort. While we were staying in Sambisa, we learnt that an old Fulani man rearing cows had helped two women to escape so we met him and asked for his assistance to help us escape and he agreed. On the appointed date, we sneaked at about 7pm to meet the man resulting in a four day trek to freedom which started on Wednesday and ended on Saturday. “When we arrived Gwoza, we stayed with soldiers for a week before we were taken to Madagali where I learnt that my father had been killed by the insurgents while majority of my relatives are staying in Yola IDP camp, so people helped me with money to come and get reunited with my family members here in Yola.” READ ALSO: Amosun calls for Army division in Ogun “I was married to one insurgent called Bana. He is in Sambisa now. They used to beat the hell out of any girl who refuses to submit to their sexual demands. Sometimes they kill or inflict serious body injuries to any girl who refuses to sleep with them.” Paulina admitted that she was pregnant for the terrorist and hoped God will protect her to deliver her child safely. |
Ahead of the first anniversary of President
Muhammadu Buhari led federal
government, Femi Adesina a Special
Adviser on media and publicity to the
president speaks to Naij.com’s Michael
Abimboye on the gains and achievements
of the government.
The special adviser to the president on
media and publicity, Femi Adesina
Naij.com: The fight against corruption
seems to be the focus of the
administration, don’t you feel it has been
over emphasized that other key sectors
like the economy and other have been
neglected?
The fight against corruption can never be
overstretched or over-emphasized at all,
because other sectors that you say are
neglected need funds to operate. If all the
resources of the country are salted away
in private pockets, how do you fund
education, health care, transportation,
infrastructure etc. So, the anti- corruption
war is essential to the overall well-being
of the country, and more vim should be
put into it.
Naij.com: What economic policies are in
place to rescue Nigeria from this economic
problem considering the common man are
the biggest victims?
The economic direction is clear. The
policies are meant to curb taste for what
we cannot afford, and cause us to look
inwards. Over 40 items have been
rendered ineligible for foreign exchange
allocation by CBN. They include palm oil,
tomato puree, toothpicks, etc.
Why must we spend scarce foreign
exchange on these items? So, the
intention is to promote self-dependence,
and save forex for the productive sector.
When the productive sector receives a
fillip, it will percolate down the line,
stimulate the economy, and touch the
lives of the people.
Naij.com: There are reports that the
popularity and acceptance of this
government by the people is drastically
dwindling, does that trouble you? Seeing
that the people are actually the
government
This claim is not empirical. If you want to
talk of reduced popularity, then you need
statistics. But one basic pointer to the
fact that this government is highly trusted
is the lukewarmness that attended the last
strike called by NLC over fuel prices.
People did not take to the streets because
they trust the Buhari presidency, and
know that whatever it does can only be
for their own good.
Femi Adesina with President Buhari
The times may be hard, but there is also a
lot of hope in the country. Like I said
somewhere else before, Nigeria is like an
aircraft with its nose in the sky, gaining
altitude. The pilot will end the voyage
safely, even if there is slight turbulence on
the way. Nothing to worry about.
Naij.com: Before coming on board, the
APC and by extension the president
promised so many things, which Nigerian
need is those this government feel most
pressed to fulfill before it leaves office?
The government will always be guided by
three key promises, among many others.
Security, economic revival, and anti-
corruption. President Buhari always says
you cannot govern a country you have not
secured. That is true. No stone will be left
unturned to secure the entire country. No
inch of Nigerian soil will be taken over by
insurgents, militants, kidnappers, and
other violent criminals. This government
has the will and the capacity to secure
the country.
On economy, the government will keep its
word, particularly in respect of job
creation. The economy will be diversified,
oil will no longer be the only mainstay,
agriculture, solid minerals, tourism, etc
will receive a boost, and millions of jobs
will be created in the process.
Of course, there will be no friend, no foe
in the anti- corruption war. No retreat, no
surrender. President Buhari is determined
to leave a sanitized country behind, by the
time he is done with public office. He
would have created a new breed without
greed, a radical opposition to corruption.
Naij.com: This government seems not to
be able to curtail the increasing pressure
by Igbo tribe for the creation of a Biafra
nation, what actually is the plan of the
president to calm the Igbos?
President Buhari is interested in calming
not only those interested in Biafra, but he
wants to calm the entire country. He is
the father of the country, and if there is
restiveness in any part of the polity, he
takes an interest, not just in the Biafra
agitation.
Naij.com: Will this government continue to
keep Nnamdi Kanu and former NSA
Sambo Dasuki in detention despite court
orders against this?
The Kanu and Dasuki matters are before
the courts. We let the judiciary adjudicate.

Naij.com: Is the president not concern
about the killings by Fulani herdsmen
considering the role he played when
residents of Oyo state killed several
herdsmen who invaded their communities
in the early 2000?
The President is concerned about the
issue of herdsmen and farmers, and he
has expressed the concern many times.
He is working with the governors, and the
security agencies to ensure that any
matter that bears the slightest affinity to
criminality is tackled, and decisively too.
Naij.com: Again, Mr President seems to
enjoy talking to international communities
about Nigeria’s problem but won’t talk to
Nigerians, why has he not spoken about
the removal of fuel subsidy removal?
The world is a global village. Where
anybody talks today does not matter, it
reverberates round the world. When the
President talks to foreign media outside
the shores of this country, Nigerian
journalists are also there, as we travel
with minimum of three media houses. So,
they have access to the same
information.
On the new fuel prices, everyone that has
spoken-the Vice President, Minister Ibe
Kachikwu, Minister Lai Mohammed, they
have all spoken on behalf of the
President. And on Democracy Day, as the
President broadcasts to the country, I can
only ask Nigerians to listen intently.
Naij.com: Already political calculations
about 2019 are on, is the president going
to seek reelection?
It is the prerogative of the President to
decide whether he will seek reelection or
not. This mandate is for 48 months, he
has only spent 12 out of it.

Naij.com: Does this government have any
plan to arrest former president Goodluck
Jonathan if investigations indict him for
corruption?
This question is for the anti-graft
agencies to answer.
Naij.com: You have also been attacked by
Nigerians for constantly referring to
government critics as wailing wailers , why
have you decided to do this?
If anybody was named wailing wailer by
his parents, then such should stand up to
be identified. But if some people wail and
whine at whatever government does,
including the positive things, and they
also go forward to twist the words of the
President and his appointees, just to
cause discord in the country, then they
are welcome to the wailing. But they will
eat their words eventually, when positive
change comes to this country. It will
surely come. May the wailers wail no
more, and work for the cohesion, peace
and progress of the country. |
