We need to talk out now so that they will not succeed in making access to telecommunications, ICT benefits, and internet use become non affordable , highly expensive, just the way they did in health, electricity, education.
Pls let the allow to save our hard earned income.

I believe these people know that to collect NIN is like to collect an American Visa. if the collection of NIN is made simple just the way the collection of ATM is at different bank, all Nigerians will have it.
Even the renew of NIN card is like hell with much fees to pay.
let the collection of NIN card be digital, simple and fast.

Following the earlier directive on the suspension of new SIM registration by network operators, the Federal government has directed all operators in the country to disconnect every SIM card not synchronized with valid National Identity Number (NIN) by December 30th 2020.

This came after an urgent meeting of key stakeholders in the Communications industry convened by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami) on Monday, December 14, 2020.

The meeting in its resolution insisted that all telecom operators must from Thursday, December 16, 2020 require all their subscribers to provide valid National Identification Number (NIN) to update SIM registration records.

What exactly is stopping Nigeria from having 24/7 electricity and making money form it as well as stabilising the economy?

Let's hear people's thoughts

1) National grid : this is the bane of the problem. Instead there should be multiple grids or network of mini grids at the level of state , local govt and organisations.

2) not handling over discos and gencos to expatriate companies like China, India , Russia , Japan etec. If these discos and gencos were sold and manage by different companies from China, India and Japan etc , the story will be different.

Look, I blame the government too, many government agencies don't pay for power

But power has been in private hands since 2013.

And the problem is up till recently it cost 53 naira to produce one kWh of electricity. And we were paying 30 naira or less for that kWh

Add the fact that in some areas 40-50% of people were not paying their bills.

And before you about meter , people bypass their meters. And threaten disco workers who catch them.

Power is being run as a business. And we Nigerians are not paying enough for service. In fact government has has to bail out powe sector with 1 trillion naira yearly, and it is estimated they need one trillion naira more

You can call me a Buhari supporter. I am not. I don't even support PDP or APC. But one thing I know. If you were running a business and 50 percent of your customers did not pay for the things they buy from you you would be broke in months.

Let's get real.

Oga calm down, are u the only service providing company in this country, why are your customers not paying for service.
Let prepaid meter be available and u wil see. The truth is all money collected by PHCN staff are not remitted to appropriate quarters, that why you are saying they are not paying bills.
You provide prepaid meter to 95% of Nigeria and you will see boost in revenue

What do you think the gencos are?

Plus even if they do what you are suggesting, the fact is many people don't pay their bills at all

The issue is revenue, not who controls what. In a situation where a guy who chases a Disco worker with cutlass , or the customs officer who threatened disco workers with a gun when they discovered his bypassed meter are treated as heroes, with resulting fall in revneu stream...do you think it matters who controls generation?

We better pay our bills. Many of these people who don't pay for power put pressure on those of us who do!

Guy I don get , you dey work for PHCN abi.

Let me educate you. If PHCN render good service nobody will bypass meter.

Let me give an instance. If use an MTN airtime freely today or tamper with their structure , police is more than ready to deal with that person, but if a person beat PHCN staff, police may not be interested in even arresting the person. This is because u give bad services, MTN on the other gives nice services.

Also be educated , if you are serious in your business

1) national grid. It is corruption. Let there mini grids at state, local govt. And organisations level.

2) alternative sources of power should be invested in by private organisations as business . This might cover an area maybe a few streets.

3) prepaid meters available just like phones

In South Africa

1. People don't bypass their meters, nor do they refuse to pay their bills

2. Bills are subsidized yes, but they have income from agriculture, mining , and a massive industrial and business sector and a tax to GDP ratio of 23% compared to Nigeria's six percent to pay for it

3. Even then Eskom, that's the Azanian equivalent of NEPA or our discos, has been rasing bills for power

4. SA also generates more power than Nigeria. 45 000 mw, part of which comes from nuclear power ( a by product of their nuclear weapons program under arphateid)

Here in Nigeria we have none of that, we refuse to pay our bills , we bypass our meters and we don't pay sufficient tax , and our agro and industrial sector is not producing enough income to pay for subsides. Oil revenue had been falling since 2014 . And corruption is there

And you want us to be like SA?

Good electricity costs money..we no have moneye

You ! Do you realize that Nigerians repair poles, transformers , feed pillars , buy cables etc. Or you are not in Nigeria.
Do this happen in South Africa

a bit complex but here's my laymans understanding of the issues and solutions to them.

1. We don't generate enough megawatts. Nigeria considering the size of population and manufacturing capability would probably need between 30000-50000 MW to guarantee 24/7 electricity. not sure if the combined power generation stations can produce up to 20000 MW.

solution would be to build more power stations which will take time and money. some are already being built in mambilla, taraba. we also need more investment in alternate sources of power like solar wind and water.

2. our transmission and distribution network is poor and decrepit. system needs modernizing so that the little we generate can be effectively distributed. The recently announced siemens deal should hopefully help in that regard. currently we only enjoy 3000-4000 of the 7000 MW generated. when siemens God willing is done with the first phase that should double the transmission and distribution capacity.

3. Government needs to help the power industry through proper regulation establish itself as a proper business enterprise the way GSM did in the early 2000s. this will enable foreign investment and expertise to come in. currently the industry is not conducive for investors to put their money in because they are not sure of making their money back. the increase in electricity tariff was supposed to address that but sadly poor nigerians will be unable to pay due to estimated billing and lack of meters.

hopefully a combination of the siemens deal and scaled up metering should help nigeria get some appreciable amount of power which would reduce reliance on petrol and deisel powered generators.

4. Gas supply is another important issue that should be resolved. good there are some gas pipeline projects coming up which will supply our power stations adequate gas.

Good points bro.
Actually our transmission and distribution network need overhaul for better service delivery.
Also mini grids and network of mini grids should be introduced.

The problem with power availability in Nigeria today is in the Constitution. Amend the Constitution to allow, states, organisation and even individual to generate and distribute power without the national grid fraud and watch the game change in Nigeria. With the current arrangement, we may never solve the power issue in Nigeria.

On point , bro.

Faithful007:
Nigeria's power issue is multi faceted. Actually we should be generating more than we do now, like about 15000mw from available capacity. But there are three problems. Firstly there are gas shortages due to poor gas network. Then the hydro plants experience low head or something like that. Thirdly, our transmission network needs overhaul. Also gas is still expensive due to high production cost rising from insecurity and lack of indigenous companies, from there consumers don't pay back (owing arrears) so the discos owe the gencos, about 500 billion ngn currently. So the gencos find it more difficult to purchase gas. The first step to sufficient power is to rebuild the the entire gas network, from there we can now have modular plants that will not need a centralized transmission system. But before that, gas production costs in Nigeria need to come down so that investors can be attracted to rebuild our gas network. These are the major issues.

U try. Good points. We need two ring transmission network in this country

Capitalism is the only thing that can drive invention in any sector. Look at our communication industry, if it was just MTN, they would have buried us. Compare that to satelite television monopolised by DSTV...... Now you see what we need.

U are right bro. Let the discos and gencos follow the telecom and digital TV sectors. Let there be availability of prepaid meters JUST like Phones and we consult them for installation .

The only problem is the exorbitant hike in electricity tariff fees just introduced. Before now I get about 480 units for a 10,000 naira recharge. After the tariff hike I get just 189 units undecided

My brother the high cost is not the issue is the service, Shay no u see what you pay for even it is costly. That's how MTN service was costly back in 2001

To effectively power a country the size of Nigeria, Nigeria need Nuclear Power plants or Coal power plant

Hydro dams and hydrothermal gas plant are simply waste of time

Unfortunately United Nations Nuclear Energy Agency won't allow Nigeria build a Nuclear power plant because they know the waste from a Nuclear Fuel is what is used for fussion Nuclear bombs and they can't allow Africans such powerful weapon... This is why the whites apartheid regime of South Africa dismantled it's nuclear plants when handing over to blacks

Coal plants on the other hand which still powers world developed countries like China US even South Africa, are now been barred by UN due to its CO2 emmision

The Solution in my own opinion is to take the Russian loan deal for them to build and manage Nuclear stations for us, one in Kogi State the other one at Cross River, while we pay them back for 30 years, because the Americans and Westerners would never agree to build such for us, any attempt to build it on our own sanctions would keep flying left and right like it's happening in IRAN

Other option is to adopt the Professor Berth Nnaji approach .. by calling in Chinese investors to build coal plants at Enugu and other coal producing states , we sell them Coal they give us power and we pay them for kilowatt they supply to national grid

.

Good ideas

Because we sell power at a cost less than what we produce it, complicated by the fact that as much as 40-50% of people don't pay their bills, and even when there is meter, some bypass the meter....that means that the power sector does not have enough money to make the needed improvements

In fact the power sector is in a one trillion naira hole financially . All the discos and gencos are running at a loss.

Modified

Going through the thread I see that people are ready to blame everyone, Buhari and GEJ inclusive for the power problem.

The reason why we don't have light is because in Nigeria we think we can get a Ferrari for the price of a bicycle.

Yesterday I told someone the actual cost of power in this country as related by ex CBN bigwig Moghalu, and he accused me of lying.

We know power costs a lot of money, but accepting that truth, that in order to have stable power we need to pay as much as 60 naira per kWh is too painful

So we blame the Hausas, Buhari, the IMF, GEJ, the discos, the gencos, the executive list , etc etc.

Meanwhile most of us refuse to pay our bills, chase electricity workers with cutlasses , bypass meters, and cheat on our bills and we expect light 24/7

I think Nigerians tend to live in sugar candy land too much

Haaa. brother, you are being myopic about. I believe you must have traveled to some countries within Africa continent , countries with political will for development. You will know get electricity is not that hard as such.

Let me tell you the problem with these discos and gencos is that they want profit immediately they set in to a business. Many do not succeed that way.
You must invest heavily in big business like for 3 or 4 years before making.
Look at discos , they don't maintain their distribution network and so on and so forth. I speak like power engineer.

Also note that no area or state of a country should only on one source / grid , there alternative sources of power available to massses in advance country
