Crime / Two Nigerians Who Travelled To Brazil In A Ship Rudder Recounts Their Ordeal by Darlingtonwrite(m): 8:36am On Aug 05, 2023
Two Nigeriansvwho travelled to Brazil in a ship rudder recounts their horrible ordeal

Two of the four Nigerian stowaways who were saved have described how they spent 14 days drinking their own urine from a ship's rudder before being saved off the coast of Brazil.

According to Daily Mail, the two guys described their amazing, life-or-death adventure across 3,500 miles (5,600 km) of open ocean from Vitória, Brazil to Lagos, Nigeria.

The four stowaways reportedly climbed into a compartment above a cargo ship's rudder in an attempt to reach Europe as they were supposedly fleeing the economic difficulties and political unrest in Nigeria.

But after two weeks of journey, they ran out of food and water, and as the ship sped towards South America, they had to resort to drinking seawater and their own pee in order to survive.

One of the stowaways, 38-year-old Thankgod Yeye, detailed the difficulties encountered throughout the travel in a story by the Daily Mail, calling it a tragic tragedy.

"For me, it was a horrific experience. It is not simple on board. I was trembling from fear. However, I'm here, he added.

Another victim, Roman Friday, 35, claimed that in order to prevent themselves from slipping overboard, they placed a net over the rudder. He also claimed to have seen "big fish like whales and sharks" in the ocean.

According to The Daily Mail, the victims were questioned at a church shelter in Sao Paolo after the trauma, and they were eventually saved by Brazilian federal police in the southeast port of Vitória two weeks after embarking on their journey on June 27.

It was learnt that due to the cramped conditions and the noise of the engine, sleeping was rare and risky.

Friday said, “I was very happy when we got rescued. I pray the government of Brazil will pity me.”

It was learnt that two of the rescued victims have since been returned to Nigeria upon their request, but Yeye and Friday were said to have applied for asylum in Brazil, citing economic hardship, political instability and crime as reasons for abandoning Nigeria.

Yeye, a Pentecostal priest from Lagos state, reportedly said that this year's floodwaters devastated his farm, which produced peanuts and palm oil, leaving him and his family homeless.

Regarding Friday, he said that his trip to Brazil had started on June 27 when a fisherman buddy had rowed him up to the stern of the Ken Wave, a ship flying the flag of Liberia that was berthed in Lagos, and left him there. There, he discovered three men who were waiting for the same ship to depart.

Father Paolo Parise, a priest at the Sao Paulo shelter, claimed to have encountered other stowaways before but never one this deadly.

Crime / Cult Members Kill And Dump A Man's Body Inside A Tricycle In Anambra by Darlingtonwrite(m): 7:37am On Aug 04, 2023
Cult members kill and dump a man's body inside a tricycle in Anambra

The body of an unidentified middle-aged man was dumped inside a partially destroyed tricycle close to the back entrance of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital in Amaku, Awka, the capital of Anambra State.

The man is said to have been murdered by a cult group.

According to information received on Thursday, the incident took place on Wednesday. The corpse generated panic in the neighbourhood, and locals and bystanders fled the area out of concern for retaliation from competing cult gangs.

"His murderers discarded the body a little while ago. After parking my car, I drove right by the location where I had arrived to visit a sick cousin at the hospital. When I parked my car, the tricycle and the body weren't there, a witness told news reporters.

Another witness claimed to have seen the tricycle being parked at the spot.

"We observed some individuals leaving the trike at the scene after parking it. We anticipated that they would come back to get the tricycle.

"We didn't know there was still another person inside the tricycle when others alighted; we only discovered a corpse inside the tricycle when people gathered around the scene shortly thereafter," the source claimed.

When reached, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, the state police public relations officer, verified the occurrence and added that the body had been taken out and deposited at a mortuary.

"The body was located and placed in a mortuary. To determine the facts surrounding the development, an inquiry is still ongoing, Ikenga said.

Health / Lagos Government Probes The Case Of Dr Vwaere Who Died In An Elevator Crash by Darlingtonwrite(m): 8:16am On Aug 03, 2023
[b]Lagos government probes the case of Dr Vwaere who died in an elevator crash, colleagues boycott duties[b]

The General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island on Tuesday, reported that Dr Vwaere Diaso died after a lift she was in crashed, according to the Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association. Diaso was a medical officer undergoing training.

On Wednesday, the Lagos State Government said that a panel of investigation had been formed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the event. The government also vowed to punish anyone found to be at fault.

According to information received, Diaso was in the lift going to a dispatch rider to get lunch when the incident occurred.

She was taken to the hospital's emergency room where it was determined that she had passed away.

Following this, a protest rocked the hospital on Wednesday as her colleagues besieged the premises and grounded activities there.

The protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as, “I don’t want to die,” “Doctors’ lives matter,” “Justice for Vwaere,” “The system failed you, Diaso,” and “Here is Vwaere Diaso, she didn’t have to die for us to get it right.”

Diaso’s protesting colleagues shut the hospital’s main gate, the health service commission’s gate, and the Lagos Island Maternity Hospital’s gate.

They expressed displeasure over the death of their colleague while accusing the hospital management of negligence.

A patient, who was at the hospital for a check-up, told news reporters that the medical workers also refused to attend to patients as they were all grieving.

The patient who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “I was at the hospital around 7 am. Nobody attended to us. Her colleagues began the protest around 9 am, moving around the hospital and paralysing activities. Other medical workers at the hospital also downed tools.”

Reacting, the NMA, in a statement by the state Chairman, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, and Secretary, Ismail Ajibowo, directed all doctors working in the three government hospitals on Lagos Island to commence an indefinite strike.

“We direct all our doctors in the three government hospitals on the island to commence indefinite strike action until the investigations are completed and justice is served; we immediately direct our doctors in all the other government hospitals to scale down activities as a mark of respect for our dead colleague. Only emergency services should be rendered for the next five days,” the statement read in part.

Diaso’s colleague who spoke with one of our correspondents on condition of anonymity said the deceased only had two weeks to complete her horsemanship, adding that “on many occasions, the elevator had stopped while we were inside it.”

“We report every time. The elevator is supposed to carry 630kg maximum, that’s eight people. Once you open the elevator and see two people already, you just have to wait for the next batch. It was faulty and they knew about it. That’s why we’re not going to take this. She was a very diligent house officer. She was very hardworking,” he said.

Olumide Sogunle, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Information and Strategy, said in a statement on Wednesday that the administration was startled to learn about the occurrence.

A team of representatives from the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Lagos State Health Service Commission, Lagos State Safety Commission, and licensed Lift and Vertical Transportation Equipment experts have started an investigation, according to Sogunle.

"The Lagos State Government will ensure that anyone found to have been negligent by the report of the inquiry will face appropriate sanctions."

Additionally, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed sympathy to the deceased's family.

The governor issued a statement via @jidesanwoolu on X, saying, "In light of this tragedy, I have taken immediate action to initiate a thorough investigation into the cause of the mechanical failure."

Crime / Court Sentences Tiktoker Who Bullied Eniola Badmus To 3 Years In Prison by Darlingtonwrite(m): 7:31am On Aug 03, 2023
Court sentences tiktoker who bullied Eniola Badmus to 3 years in prison

On Wednesday, a Federal High Court in Lagos convicted Nwakaego Okoye, a Tiktoker, to three years in prison for harassing prominent Nollywood actress Eniola Badmus on social media.

Okoye admitted guilt to the accusations brought against her, and Justice Nicholas Oweibo found her guilty and gave her a sentence.

The judge also offered a N150, 000 fine as an alternative to the sentencing.

The police prosecutor Nosa Uhumwangho had earlier informed the court during the convict's arraignment that the convict and a person named Chimabia (who is currently at large) had plotted to commit the crime of cyberstalking.

He claimed that between December 2022 and July 2023, the tiktoker had bullied the victim online.

The prosecution claims that the offence violated Section 27 of the 2015 Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act.

The prosecutor, Uhumwangho, pleaded with the court to review the case's facts after the indictment was read and Okoye admitted guilt.

Then he pleaded with the jury to find the defendant guilty as charged and impose a fair sentence.

However, the convict's attorney begged the judge to temper justice with mercy, pointing out that the defendant was a first-time offender who did not waste the court's time.

Okoye was sentenced by Justice Oweibo to three years in prison on each of the two counts, or a fine of N150,000.

Celebrities / May Sues Yul Edochie And His Second Wife For Adultery, Demands N100M by Darlingtonwrite(m): 8:32am On Aug 02, 2023
May, the estranged first wife of famous Nollywood actor Yul Edochie, has finally dragged her husband and his second wife, Judy Austin, to court

The brand and lifestyle influencer was reported to have demanded N100m in damages in her suit against Judy for committing adultery with her husband

May, in her suit, noted that she and Yul married under the 1970 Marriage Act, which indicated that neither a man nor woman can have more than one wife/husband at a time

This might be the most anticipated news within the Nigerian entertainment space as many may say they have been waiting to hear that Yul Edochie's first wife, May, has finally filed for divorce to leave her husband.

In a post by the Divorce blog that has gone viral on Facebook, DPA Family Law Clinic revealed the details of May Edochie's lawsuit and why it took so long before she filed for a divorce.

It was also revealed in detail why May considers Yul's marriage to Judy null because her husband married her under the 1970 marriage act and isn't allowed to have more than one wife at a time, unlike the customary marriage act. The lengthy post revealed that Yul was recently at his former matrimonial home, which he used to share with May but was denied entry.

The post also shared that Femi Falana's law firm and Eculaw represent May in court. It is reported that in her lawsuit, May noted that her husband seems to be under some kind of influence and has been unusually aggressive, erratic, irrational and increasingly threatening. She is said to have filed a separate charge against Judy for committing adultery with her husband and has demanded N100m in damages.

YUL EDOCHIE’S SITUATION: UNDERSTANDING THE REALITY OF IT

I have not seen in recent times a case where so much is going on, and yet not much is known to the public despite the intense public interest.

For the avoidance of doubts, May Yul-Edochie filed a divorce petition against Yul. She also filed against Judy as a party cited and she is asking for 100 million naira in damages against Judy for adultery with her husband. Make no mistake about it: Yul and Judy are NOT husband and wife, and cannot be so until Yul and May are divorced. It is a combination of delusion and absurdity for the two to call themselves husband and wife yet.

Both Judy and Yul are aware of the lawsuit, having received copies of the suit papers by email.

Surprisingly, both Yul and Judy are avoiding service of the process upon them. The court bailiff has tried so many times to serve them in accordance with the rules of court. But they have evaded service of court process. Despite the braggadocio and the social media stunts, Yul Edochie and Judy are facing serious legal challenges and they seem ill-prepared for them, given the fact that they have been evading service of process.

In addition to the substantive petition, May also filed for an order of court restraining Yul from accessing their former matrimonial home. That application is based on the fact that there are genuine security and safety concerns. Yul's behavior has been erratic, irrational, aggressive and increasingly threatening. He seems to have been under some influence, the full extent or scope of which we are yet to ascertain. But measures are being taken to protect May and her children. These measures are proportionate to the threats.

Despite the combination of circumstances at the present time, last weekend, against all advice, Yul attempted to access the home, now occupied alone by May and her children. But he was stopped by the intervention of law enforcement. He was reminded that henceforth all issues involving his marriage to May and dealings in that regard are subjudice. He should consult his lawyer, when and if he hires one, and be guided by such lawyer.

After the event of last weekend, it was not surprising at all to hear that Yul and Judy would be on social media in a commic display where Judy showers Yul with unfettered adulation, calling him Odogwu, the best in Africa and fountain head. It is totally understandable that he would need such extreme ego massage.

As the world can attest by now, May is the sharp opposit of Yul and Judy. She is calm, rational and incredibly stoic. Despite the enormous losses and suffering she has endured lately, she held on to high values of honor and integrity and remains calm and focused in face of turbulence. She has earned the respect and admiration of many good people.

DPA Family Law Clinic remains committed to supporting her through the storm.

NOTE: May is represented in court by Femi Falana's Firm and Eculaw Group. Our Family Law Clinic plays a support role aside from litigation activities.

https://www.facebook.com/100076074495308/posts/pfbid0AAcVZQNxBGaCwpoHhiAADkk31s2pG2bnuWjdoA52uYVHFss77UhXNuBoF13a6cYAl/?mibextid=2JQ9oc

MARRIAGE IS MARRIAGE, AND ADULTERY IS ADULTERY

You cannot turn adultery into a marriage just because the adulterous couple call themselves husband and wife. But that is exactly what Yul Edochie and Judy Austin have tried to do. We are surprised that some people would buy into it.

If we allow Yul and Judy to get away with such absurdity, it will amount to us turning everything upside down. Then the term adultery will have no meaning in law.

The fact is that Yul and May elected to marry under the Marriage Act 1970 Laws of Nigeria. The most essential consequence of marrying under that law is that it is a crime to have two wives or two husbands at the same time. Those who want to have two wives DO NOT marry under the Marriage Act. Instead, they marry under customary law. This is a decision everybody makes during his first marriage - to marry under the Marriage Act or under the Customary Law. Once you make your choice, you're bound by it.

Queen May cannot be forced into a polygamous marriage. That's what this is all about. She doesn't want to be forced into a polygamous marriage. What Yul is doing with Judy remains adultery. The relationship between Yul and Judy is purely adulterous. Not wanting to play along with that, May has filed for divorce and she demands for damages against the woman that committed adultery with her husband.

As you can see, May took her time. She did not rush to file for divorce as many would have expected. First, she had to deal with the shock of realizing that her husband had been living a double life for years and had been able to conceal it, using the nature of his work to conceal it. Second, she sensed that her husband could have been under some influence and her primary instinct was to try to save him from such influence. Third, she had to allow time for both families which were all equally shocked to wade into the matter. Fourthly, she had to assess how this whole development would affect their children and she wanted to minimize the shock impact on the children. And unfortunately, she lost her son in the midst of all that. In these circumstances, it was justified for May to take some time before taking a definitive step to end the marriage.

May has shown wisdom, discipline and maturity in handling the situation. She is well coordinated. If there is anybody that has lost his balance, it is Yul. He did so long ago.

Having said that, the challenges the family is going through is enormous. Left for May, she wants a peaceful dissolution of the marriage and she is ready to move on with her life and to remain the best mother she could be. It is quite unfortunate that Yul and Judy, through their unbecoming media stunts, have chosen to constitute public nuisance as their way of making a wrong appear right.

We would have asked the public to allow the family peace and tranquility to deal with their challenges. But we understand how difficult that would be given the fact that Yul and Judy are everywhere trying to attract public attention to their extreme absurdity.

Queen May will remain calm and focused. She remains grateful to God. And she appreciates the continous flow of goodwill from well-wishers.

Suspected killer of 2-year-old Delta boy has been arrested- Delta State Police

Ivan Omhonrina, a two-year-old boy, was killed two weeks ago, and the Delta State Police Command said on Tuesday that the suspect had been detained.

According to reports, Omhonrina was killed at Okpanam in the Delta State local government area of Oshimili North during an operation by agents of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

According to the NDLEA, the incident happened when its men were conducting a raid on a nearby drug den.

The suspect was already in jail, according to DSP Bright Edafe, the state police public relations officer, who informed journalists in Asaba, the state's capital.

He did not, however, reveal who the suspect was.

"We have the guy in custody who is suspected of killing the two-year-old boy a few weeks ago. He will face charges in court as soon as the inquiry is finished, he merely stated.

In the meantime, the command paraded Ojokor Jeffrey, 22, and eight other kidnappers on Tuesday.

Edafe described the suspects as the ones terrorising the Warri, Sapele, and Uvwie areas of the state while speaking at the command's headquarters in Asaba, the state capital.

He stated, "The DPO Owvian Aladja Division led a surveillance team to the scrap yard in Ekpan and arrested one Ojokor Jeffrey, 22, who is the leader of the criminal gang terrorising the Warri-Sapele districts. This was done in response to credible intelligence acquired on a criminal gang.

Musa Amadu (27), Abu Mohammed (30), Mohammed Saidu (23), Anas Idris (20), Abubakar Muktar (23) and Kamilu Alasa (21) were all arrested as a result of further questioning of the suspect.

The PPRO reported that two locally built double barrel pistols and 11 live cartridges were among the goods seized from the accused.

Two individuals who stole a Hilux van from the Ministry of Lands and Infrastructure but belonged to the Ondo State Government were also paraded.

The car was taken from its parking spot in Owo town, Ondo State, according to the police spokesman. He also noted that the car had been recovered and the matter would be given to the Ondo State Police Command.

Edafe claims that on July 30, 2023, Ondo State sent a distress call to the command, and it was assumed that the car was already in Delta State.

He claimed that the state CP swiftly assigned the CP-Decoy Squad to start an inquiry guided by information.

The DPO Patani informed the police patrol unit stationed on the Patani motorway where the vehicle was intercepted, according to him, after the team followed the car to Patani.

He said that two suspects, Tochukwu Nnamani (22) and Chukwuma Unue (38), were detained after the car with the registration plate OD 231 A10 was found and retrieved.

According to him, the suspects said that they received the vehicle from one Efe in Ughelli and were to give it to one Chief Ojukwu in Mbaima town in Rivers State.

3 Kwara students sentenced for gang-raping a girl

On Monday, Justice Adenike Akinpelu of the Kwara State High Court, sitting in Ilorin, found three youths guilty of planning a gang rape of one of their cousins.

The victim (name withheld) was raped in the Adangba neighbourhood of the state's Ilorin East Local Government Area, and the defendants were found guilty of two counts of criminal conspiracy and the crimes.

The defendants, Mustapha Ahmed (age 23), Mustapha Ridwan (age 22), and Omotosho Yahaya (age 23), who is the victim's cousin, are all enrolled in a state-run university.

Yahaya, the first defendant, is accused of inviting his two companions to participate in the conduct while the victim was there.

They were sentenced to five years imprisonment each for rape and two years each for criminal conspiracy.

The sentences, which include an additional N50,000 fine imposed to be paid by each of the defendants, are to run concurrently.

Justice Akinpelu held that “The confessional statements of the defendants are clear, unambiguous and equivocal contrary to the argument of their counsel.

“No woman in her right senses will consent to and allow three men to have sex with her.”

She described the defendants’ claims that the victim owed them money as a “fairy tale” and pronounced them “guilty as charged.”

Reacting to the judgment, the prosecutor, Muslimat Suleiman, a principal counsel from the Kwara State Ministry of Justice, said the judge did justice to the case having evaluated and exhausted the evidence before her.

On his part, the Director, Office of the Public Defender, Ishola Olofere, who defended the first and second defendants described the judgment as a “good one, though it was against us, looking at the industry exhibited by the judge.”

In Lagos, a 63-year-old woman, whose name has been withheld, found herself in a distressing situation after falling victim to fraudsters and losing a substantial amount of money. The incident had severe consequences for her health, as she developed High Blood Pressure due to the trauma she experienced.

The victim's daughter, Anu Joseph, shared the harrowing tale with their source. She explained that the trouble began when she urgently transferred an undisclosed sum of money to her mother on June 7, 2023, to address a pressing matter. Her mother, following the instructions, went to a bank branch on Victoria Island to complete the transaction.

However, at the bank, her mother encountered an obstacle. She was unable to finalize the transaction due to a critical missing document that she did not have with her on that particular day. Frustrated and confused about how to proceed, she left the bank, intending to figure out an alternative solution to her urgent matter.

It was at this moment that the unfortunate events unfolded. As her mother was pondering her next steps and how to get to Ojuelegba from there, a car pulled up in front of her. The driver, seemingly helpful, asked her where she was headed and she confided in him. Little did she know that this encounter would lead her into the hands of fraudsters.

The fraudsters in the car began a deceptive conversation with her, mentioning Pounds and claiming to have a consignment. Skillfully manipulating her, they convinced her to withdraw a considerable amount of N3 million from her account and hand it over to them. She complied, and they even took her to meet some individuals who provided bank details to seemingly complete the transaction.

Unaware of the scam at that point, her mother returned home, unable to share the shocking incident with anyone. As the realization of being defrauded sank in, the stress and anxiety took a toll on her well-being, leading to a significant increase in her blood pressure. She was no longer in her right frame of mind, but still hesitant to admit that she had fallen victim to a scam.

The fraudsters, relentless in their pursuit, continued to contact the elderly woman, exploiting her vulnerability and coaxing her to send more money. Incredibly, she kept sending funds to the tune of a staggering N6.2 million until she was left with nothing more to give.

In a desperate bid to seek justice and put an end to this nightmare, Anu Joseph reported the case to the policemen at the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Alagbon. However, even with the provided bank details, tracing the fraudsters proved to be a daunting task for the investigators.

When contacted, the spokesperson of the FCID, Niyi Ogundeyi, confirmed that he met with the victim's daughter and assured her that the investigation was ongoing. Yet, the ordeal remains a distressing chapter for the family, hoping for justice and a resolution to this heart-wrenching incident.

Police arraign 2 in Lagos for stealing wood of N6 million

On Thursday, two men, William Offor and Syprien Azangbe, were brought before a Lagos State Magistrates' Court in Ebute-Metta, charged with the alleged theft of wood valued at N6 million. The police accused them of conspiring with others to commit the crime, stealing the wood belonging to Olanrewaju Tajudeen and Akudo Omotayo on July 19, 2022, at No. 150, Abeokuta Street, Ebute-Metta.

The charges pressed against Offor and Azangbe included two counts - conspiracy and stealing - both of which are offenses under Sections 411 and 287 of the criminal law of Lagos State 2015.

During the initial reading of the charges, the defendants pleaded guilty to the first count but pleaded not guilty to the second count. However, their lawyer, S.R. Makanjuola, requested the court to allow the defendants to take their plea again, as they claimed not to fully comprehend the charges, leading to conflicting pleas.

Responding to the application, Magistrate Folashade Kayode ordered that the charges be read to them once more. Upon the repetition, the defendants pleaded not guilty to both charges.

The defense counsel then sought bail for the defendants, urging the court to grant it liberally. In response, Magistrate Kayode granted bail to Offor and Azangbe in the sum of N500,000 each. Additionally, they were required to provide two sureties each, with the same amount of N500,000 as a guarantee.

The case was adjourned until September 20, 2023, to begin the trial proceedings.

Governor Peter Mba of Enugu state shuts 106 shops and 2 banks for observing the Monday sit-at-home order by IPOB

On Monday, the Enugu State Government took action against 106 shops and two banks that reportedly observed the sit-at-home order issued by a faction of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra. The closure was carried out by officials from the State Government and Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA).

Governor Peter Mbah had previously warned shop owners and banks about not opening for business on Mondays in compliance with the illegal sit-at-home order. He made this threat while inspecting major markets in Enugu.

The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, led the exercise and clarified that the intention was not to punish businesses but to foster a culture of non-compliance with the sit-at-home order. He emphasized the importance of solidarity against those attempting to intimidate the state.

Onyia mentioned that the task force created by the State Government would continue monitoring the situation in the markets and would be present again the following Monday.

During the enforcement, they found that 85% of traders showed up in the markets they visited. A total of 106 shops and 2 banks were sealed, but for now, the governor has given instructions not to take any punitive measures.

Some traders expressed their concerns, stating that Mondays were usually unproductive as people feared going out due to security concerns related to the sit-at-home order.

What are your thoughts on this development?

Secondary school students beat up teacher in Ogun state, Police arrest 10

A gang of senior secondary school pupils in Ogun State reportedly attacked a teacher, Kolawole Shonuga, after he caught one of them cheating during an examination at Isanbi Comprehensive High School, Ilisan-Remo, in the Ikenne Local Government Area of the state.

The incident occurred on Tuesday while Shonuga was invigilating the unified examination for SS 1 Art class students. Upon catching a pupil cheating and confiscating his paper, the students were dissatisfied with the teacher's action. After school hours, they confronted the teacher and assaulted him at the school's gate.

The police from the Remo Division later arrived at the scene and arrested approximately 10 of the students involved in the attack. Shonuga filed a formal report on the assault at the Remo Police Division.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Omotola Odutola, stated that 10 suspects had been arrested. However, she did not provide confirmation on whether the suspects had already been arraigned in court for assault.

The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools in the state, Felix Agbesanwa, expressed his disapproval of the incident and insisted that the students must face the full consequences of their actions under the law to set an example for others.

The state government also condemned the act of violence and emphasized that it would not tolerate any indiscipline from learners across the state. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Science, and Technology, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu, warned parents to counsel their children, stating that misbehavior in school would be appropriately dealt with.

To address the growing concern of assaults on teachers in public schools, the state government had previously introduced a compulsory undertaking, signed by students and their parents, to curb hooliganism following four similar cases recorded in October 2021.

Over 15% of Nigerians are living with Kidney failure- Health expert reveals

Dr. Ebun Bamgboye, the Clinical Director at St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos, has expressed concern over the high incidence of renal failure in Nigeria, stating that over 15 percent of Nigerians are affected by this condition. He emphasized that a significant number of these patients require dialysis or kidney transplants to sustain their lives. Unfortunately, many individuals who need dialysis do not have access to it, leading to a potential loss of life.

During a lecture at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) in Ondo State, Dr. Bamgboye, a renowned nephrologist, proposed the establishment of a deceased donor program as a crucial solution to saving the lives of chronic kidney disease patients. He pointed out that numerous organs are wasted daily, which could instead be used to benefit those relying on dialysis.

Dr. Bamgboye stressed the importance of prevention through early detection and screening of the population, particularly among vulnerable groups such as pupils, pregnant women, and undergraduates. He highlighted the financial burden of kidney failure, noting that the cost of treatment, including kidney transplants, is substantial and poses a challenge to the country's healthcare system.

The late Emeritus Professor Oladipo Akinkugbe, a pioneer in kidney transplantation in Nigeria, inspired Dr. Bamgboye and others in the field. He called on his fellow mentees to work towards realizing the professor's dream of better kidney care in the country.

In response to the staggering numbers of kidney failure cases and the limited availability of dialysis and transplants, Dr. Bamgboye advocated for a stronger focus on prevention and the establishment of effective deceased donor programs to address the growing demand for kidney transplants in Nigeria.

The Vice Chancellor of UNIMED, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, praised the late Emeritus Prof. Akinkugbe's contributions to medicine and his exemplary character. The university had initiated a yearly event in his honor to commemorate his legacy and achievements in the medical field.

Division as PoS operators disagree over new charges

A group of Point of Sale (PoS) operators in Nigeria staged protests against the recent increase in service charges, which came into effect on Monday.

In June, the Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria announced the new service charges, citing the need for PoS operators' survival.

Under the implemented framework, customers depositing amounts ranging from N1,000 to N50,000 would be subject to service charges ranging from N100 to N600. For withdrawals between N1,000 and N20,000, service charges would range from N100 to N800.

The Concerned PoS Operators in Nigeria, representing the operators, expressed their strong opposition to the increased charges, deeming them excessive and harmful to the public.

Kayode Salako, the Chairman of the group, stated in an interview in Abuja on Monday that the charge hike would further burden many Nigerians already facing hardships. He emphasized the need for fair practices by financial service providers and PoS operators, urging the Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria to reconsider their price list.

Salako proposed an alternative service charge structure on behalf of the group, suggesting lower fees than those proposed by the association. He also called on the government to provide support to PoS operators by granting them increased access to cash, allowing them to meet the needs of customers effectively.

Furthermore, Salako appealed to the Central Bank of Nigeria to review the cashless policy and raise the withdrawal limit for PoS operators and mobile money agents through various channels, including ATMs.

The Concerned PoS Operators in Nigeria expressed their solidarity with the Nigerian people during these challenging times and urged for relief measures to alleviate their financial burdens.
