The Web search leader unveiled its ultra-high speed Google Fiber service in Kansas City, Missouri, and could start installations in September, executives said. Google hopes to roll out the service to other cities later. “Access is the next frontier that needs to be opened,” Google Chief Financial Officer Patrick Pichette said. “We’re going to do it profitably. That is our plan.” “We are at a crossroad,” he added, noting that Internet speeds had leveled out for broadband since around 2000. “We at Google we believe there is no need to wait.” Google Fiber’s ultra high-speed connections and television offerings are aimed at surpassing those of current providers, allowing users to search live channels, Netflix, YouTube, recorded shows and tens of thousands of hours of on-demand programming. However, no phone service is available. “The phone is really a 1940s thing. Why have a landline? It’s sitting there, you use it once every two weeks,” Pichette said. Google said it also intends to roll out product packages for businesses, but would not provide details. Google Fiber includes more than 100 networks and costs $120 a month for a package of TV, 1 gigabyte per second Internet speeds and 1 terabyte of cloud storage. The package includes popular networks owned by major media companies such as Comcast Corp’s NBC Universal, Discovery Communications and Viacom Inc. Premium movie networks are available from Liberty Media’s Starz for an extra fee. But it excludes several major TV names, such as News Corp’s Fox cable channels; Time Warner networks like CNN, TNT and TBS, as well as Walt Disney Co cable channels like ESPN and Disney children networks. Google executives said the company is still in negotiations to add more content. “They need to be able to offer something that is everything people have now and more,” said Ben Schachter, an analyst with Macquarie Research. “People are going to have high expectations for this. The worst thing they can do is come out and disappoint.” Google is also offering an Internet-only package priced at $70 a month. The download speeds would be around 1 gigabyte a second, according to Google executives. Google is charging a $300 installation fee, saying consumers should treat it as a “home improvement” cost. The initial service area includes central Kansas City, Missouri and all of the city of neighboring Kansas City, Kansas. This market is dominated by Time Warner Cable Inc, which charges $99.95 for its fastest Internet-only service there. Google Fiber would be 20 times faster. Time Warner spokesman Justin Venech said the second largest U.S. cable operator had a “robust and adaptable network” and welcomed the competition. FEATURES AND FREEBIE Google Fiber includes such features as the ability to record eight TV shows at a time and store up to 500 hours of high definition programming. Users can choose to use a tablet or smartphone as a voice-activated remote control. Google is offering its Nexus 7 tablet with the Google TV app to early users of the service. Google said it is setting up a 6-week “rally” for consumers to vote on where the first fiber communities, or “fiberhoods,” should be installed in the Kansas City area. Consumers must pay $10 to register their household online for service. About 50 “neighbors” will need to register in order for their area to be eligible for installation services, according to Google executives. Whether or not consumers will embrace the new offerings remains to be seen. But officials said they are confident Kansas City will be a showcase of success for a larger rollout. “Google is a very different company,” said Kevin Lo, general manager of Google Access. “And this is not a short-term project.” http://www.channelstv.com/home/2012/07/26/google-unveils-ultrafast-internet-tv/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter

The United Nations agency made its suggestion on Friday, four days after U.S. regulators approved use of Gilead Sciences Inc’s Truvada for people who are not infected but may engage in sexual activity with HIV-positive partners. The concept is known as pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP. Truvada, which combines the anti-HIV drugs tenofovir and emtricitabine in one pill, is widely used to treat people already infected with the virus that causes AIDS. The medicine, which costs almost $14,000 a year in the United States, is the first treatment also approved for prevention. “WHO is encouraging countries wishing to introduce PrEP to first establish small projects to help public health workers to better understand and realize its potential benefits,” the agency said in a statement. It said appropriate HIV medicines should be given to those at high risk of infection. “These could include men or transgender women who have sex with men,” the group said. WHO spokeswoman Sarah Russell said the agency could not recommend specific drugs for prevention, but added: “It needs to be a drug like Truvada that has been developed for prevention purposes.” Russell said WHO expects Gilead to make Truvada available at a deeply discounted price for prevention programs in some poor and middle-income countries. “We believe Gilead will bring the price down to about $100 per year per person” in those countries, Russell said in an interview. Gilead said generic versions of Truvada, costing as little as $8 a month, are already available in 112 countries, including countries hardest hit by the HIV/AIDS epidemic such as India, Thailandand South Africa, under special arrangements with 12 Indian generic partners. WHO noted that an international study called Partners PrEP has shown that HIV medicines are highly effective at preventing the illness in men and women whose partners are infected. That study, conducted in Kenya and Uganda and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, involved taking a daily tablet containing tenofovir or tenofovir in combination with emtricitabine. The U.N. agency said it would evaluate the outcomes of the small projects, along with evolving scientific evidence, before issuing its own detailed guidelines next year on the use of HIV treatments for prevention. WHO said it was important that people taking HIV drugs for prevention are HIV-negative, because otherwise drug resistant forms of HIV could evolve. The agency said they should also continue using condoms and faithfully take their medicines on a daily basis. http://www.channelstv.com/home/2012/07/21/who-endorses-use-of-hiv-medicines-for-prevention/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter

The Police force in Edo State on Monday recovered the corpses of Inspector Johnson Aghedo and Constable Odudukudu Greg, who drowned while conveying voting materials to riverine areas of Edo State during Saturday’s governorship election in the state. The two policemen and an INEC official died when the boat they were travelling in capsized on Ologbo River, in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area. Deputy Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Operations, Force headquarters Abuja, Marvel Akpoyibo said this when he paid a condolence visit to the families of the late policemen. Mr Akpoyibo said “they paid the ultimate sacrifice as part of their contributions to the success of Saturday’s election. The force will stand by them (family) during and after the burial.” The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Kassim Gaidam, said the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission regrets the death of the police officers and the ad-hoc official. “We felt very bad, we share your grief. We are here to let you know that your husband died while on active duty. He also contributed to the success we recorded in the election. He died a hero and we will stand by you, during and after the burial.” http://www.channelstv.com/home/2012/07/17/edo-election-police-recover-bodies-of-drowned-inspectors/ |

Oshiomhole... More than 77% of the entire vote!!! Ivbiedo, waruese.Sijoo1, I am inluv |
Hello folks, what is the situation report in ur area? |
iykak47: Vote for ANPP, Adams Oshomhole has tried his best but his best is not good enough. What makes u think the ANPP guy will do more than the present government? If the guy is really serious about improving d lives of the pple of Edo, he should join Oshiomhole's crew in the good works, or better still, wait till after his 2nd tenure. This is not the right time to change government. Osho should be left to build on the developmental project he has started. |
Edo,your future is here for u to decide.
|
Let's check our history, precisely from 1999 to 2008 which was the time PDP ruled in Edo, then from 2008 till date which mark the tenure of Oshiomhole. Do Oshiohmlole deserve a 2nd term or we should allow PDP to kick him out with their do-or-die way of rigging election? Let's be wise. let's act wise. VOTE and PROTECT your Vote. |
These are the core representatives of PDP. What do they really stand for?
|
I don't really belong to any political party, but I will advice Edo pple not to forget their history so soon if they really need to move forward.
|
The much talked about Edo gubernatorial election is finally here, let's drop a word for the electorate, also let's use dis trend as a channel to update pple about what and what is happening in all the wards and Benin city in general. Thank you. |
Ur head no correct, believe me. |
