LiteratureShort Story- Fading by Dasience(op): 3:42am On Jul 07, 2018
We were supposed to be in the season. Us! My make up done, hair styled, strutting off in my most expensive gown, struggling to look like a natural on heels while I waited for you. All buff in your tux, your dark skin glistening under the street light, you would alight from the Uber with arms waiting for me.

You would stop when you see me, too shocked to move. You would let out a scream for both of us.

“You look so beautiful”, You’d say eyes wide, eyebrows agreeing with you. I would let out a shy ‘thank you’. I would... continue reading http://dasience.com/fading/
LiteratureBook Review: Hang No Clothes Here By Bolaji Omotunde by Dasience(op): 1:53pm On May 27, 2018
John Braimoh is a reputable officer in the Nigeria Police Force who finds himself in the web of the Force disciplinary committee then advances to other personal and family woes. His enduring friendship with Dennis Omoruyi (a fellow police officer) but of a higher rank is tested when foreign law enforcement agencies (we are talking in CIA terms) make John spy on his friend who is a suspected drug kingpin. John does not just become a ‘spy’ for international agencies easily but as a result of torture, humiliation and kidnap. He has to journey through life dealing with inner conflicts, protecting his family, spying on and be-friending his best friend. He has to deal with the unpredictability of the police force, contempt naturally directed towards most law enforcement agency in Nigeria.

It is unlike something I have ever read. What a sweet Nigerian crime book! You initially ask yourself how feasible a crime book will be in a Nigerian setting but it is true, it happens.

LiteratureBook Lovers Talk About Popular Books They Do Not Like by Dasience(op): 6:49pm On Apr 06, 2018
The hype about some books can be utterly crazy that you will feel like an outcast if you are yet to read it. Sometimes, it actually gets to me, I get tempted and eventually give in to this fad. Most times it has been worth it, other times it has been a bleh moment. Sometimes, it can also be hard not conforming to the great reviews everyone is giving. If everyone you know say that a book is great but you think other wise most times it is very easy to conform and just do it for the gram. It is totally fine if you don’t like a book that everyone thinks is great. It is also fine to talk about this. IT IS YOUR OPINION. This post is not to throw any shade at any author but it just how book lovers feel about books that everyone really likes. When you are reading this, take your judgemental jacket off, you can pick it off after leaving a comment.

I asked my fellow book lovers/bookstagrammers for any widely loved book they did not like. I asked some people personally on Instagram, I did not want to ask people personally because I felt replying without been asked personally will make it more real. At the end of the day I did a little bit of both.

Drumroll please!

Nusaybaho said the book on the list is Stay with Me by Ayobami Adebayo. This book is everyone’s favourite and has been shortlisted for various prizes. When I asked for the reason behind the pick she simply said... Click http://dasience.com/bookstagrammers-feature-popular-books-dont-like/ to continue reading
LiteratureMy You Read Library Experience by Dasience(op): 9:24am On Mar 28, 2018
I was going to start with ‘late last year’ but I think I have done that twice now. I made so many decisions for this year, everyone wants to get better (I think). Last year, I planned to do a librarary tour especially in Lagos. I targeted public libraries and spaces where people were free to read. The first place on my list was You Read Library, Yaba. You Read Library is a Gtbank CSR initiative and trust me, it is a beautiful space. As a lover of beautiful spaces, I immediately made up my mind to enjoy reading there even without the experience. I have been there already (for book reading sessions) before I actually decided to go read there.

My free day is Friday so I decided to go mid-morning after a failed attempt to wake up early. Fortunately, this was also the period that the Guinness World Record for Reading Aloud was ongoing. I was going to have a great day in that beautiful space.
When I got to You Read Library I met people standing outside but it did not mean anything to me. I casually walked to where the now Guinness world record breaker was making things happen. I stayed there for a while, got up to actually read in the library.

“You can’t go into the library, it is full, you have to wait outside, I will give you a number”, those were the words that welcomed me.

A great day in a beautiful space indeed.

First of all, I am not a library person (even though I was the library prefect in secondary school). I have visited my uni Library thrice, it’s my third year now, I did not go at all in my second year so that was all in my first year. Then I get to this Pinterest-picture worthy space and I have to wait outside. How wonderful is that? I did wait for one hour or so but this was after I went back to where the Guinness World Record attempt was ongoing.

I am not going to lie, it was not a great start. I have been anticipating coming here so much for this ride to flop. It got to my turn, number 42. I made my way inside and still searched for a seat. I finally found an empty seat with a computer. As the Nigerian that I am, I pulled out my charger to charge with the computer.

One minute I am charging my phone, the next I look around and I can’t find my phone. It was so funny because I was sitting by the wall. I asked the person sitting next to me if he saw my phone but prior to me checking for the phone, I was being interrogated by a worker in the library on the reason I was sitting in a seat with a computer.

Will you make it at the end?

“Will I make it at the end”, I ask myself.

I think that question is overly deep to be placed on the wall of an ordinary restaurant. The serenity of the restaurant demeans the question. It lackluster paint whose glory could be dated to the 80’s answered the question. How did the restaurant owner watch it go this bad? Don’t they know about aesthetics?

“The restaurant owner is definitely not making it”, those words slip from my mouth before I can control it. Sometimes our body reacts faster than we want it to. I remember how ubiquitous the Gtbank ad was that I wrote it in my biology note. That is the power of what we constantly focus on.

“Hey babe”, Anthony says.

His presence stills my thought. He always looks good after a shave. If we were in America, I’d have gone to hug him really tight but I really do not want the ‘will you make it at the end crew’ to give me a side eye.

“Someone is looking good”, I say.

I really hope he sees it, the light that settles in my eye when he is around. The smile that is plastered on my face. The stammering, the ermm and soft yes I say.

He doesn’t say anything but is focused on his phone. I really do not know what to do or say. I wander back to when I thought I was an insect in Anthony’s perception. To when he finally noticed me, the way he calls my name. Life shouldn’t be this good to anyone.

“You did not ask about the test”, I blurted out to banish the silence.

“Which test is that one?” he asked without looking away from his phone.

“The one I was preparing for, the reason I couldn’t see the movie with you on Friday”, I say trying to make him remember.

“That movie was great, I felt all the emotions; sad, happy, surprised, intrigued. Babe, infinity war will be terrific”, he exclaimed finally looking away from his phone.

LiteratureLekki Conservation Centre Palava by Dasience(op): 2:31pm On Mar 12, 2018
Late last year, I decided to step up my ‘outing game’ because I realized that I have lived in Lagos for almost two decades and I really don’t know my way around. I even school in Lagos (what a shame). So, I decided to go somewhere relatively important at least once every month in 2018. Prior to this month, my closest attempt to going out more was seeing movies more which I do not consider as going out. I checked my favourite blogs for inspiration. The first place on my list was Lekki Conservation Centre. Well, because it just felt like it even though I am not big on animals. I’m yet to catch the animal bug so I just wanted to go to Lekki Conservation Centre.

This is March and this should be the third post related to this but I have not been true to my goal. My friend celebrated her birthday yesterday and she was celebrating it at Lekki Conservation Centre (LCC). I knew that this was the perfect opportunity to start exploring Lagos.

The funniest and terrifying thing happened while our friend came and brought food for us. Nobody warned us that monkeys would be attracted to the food and come hunting for the food. That’s how we were devouring the food then the first monkey came, we quickly packed and moved to the other side, then saw another one coming. We knew it was time to to escape...

LiteratureThankful Series- Glasses by Dasience(op): 1:01pm On Nov 21, 2017
Dear glasses,
You caught my attention the day I struggled to find your abode so I resigned to keep you near my bed. Slowly caving in to sleep, I realized how important you are to me.Even inanimate things can be important. I love that you hide the pains my eyes carry. No one notices the eyebag because you hide it so well. You keep people guessing how I really look like without you, some prefer you with me others don't (Trust humans to always have something to say) but I appreciate how beautiful you make the world appear. You make it so clear and pure hiding it's chaos in oblivion. There is that nod my heart gives when you take your place after idling somewhere. It recognizes that myopia has lost it's glory even if it is temporary. Sometimes I get tired of wiping dirt over you. I get bored of pushing you to remain in place with my middle finger. The worst is looking for where you reside in, I do not even know where your house is at the moment. People should stop assuming you make me see a thousand times better, it is not actually like that.Thank you for helping me most times because I cannot imagine asking someone 'what is that on the board? ' or 'who is that afar?' I know your cousin 'contact lens' is an alternative but you know I am not brave enough to keep up with it's rules. I always deal with the 'nerdy' comments I get because of you (I am not a nerd anyway). Before it gets effusive and 'people of the world' start asking 'is it because of ordinary glasses?' It is more than that really ( you will relate better if you are stuck with one) Thank you for showing me a clearer version of everything the world has to offer.
Love,
Dasience.

LiteratureRed Is The Colour by Dasience(op): 12:09pm On Nov 03, 2017
"I must watch this IG video" I thought out loud.Of course I did,in my sleep. I woke up to the feeling of hotness of my phone, Ileft my data on all through the night.
"Don't put your phone beside your head when you want to sleep" I can remember mother's warning.I know it is bad but one mistake will not lead to any medical issue but what do I know?An undescribable wetness strikes me. There is only one thing that gets me to this state. I roll my eyes. Not you again! I lazily dragged myself from the bed. I had to change before my bedspread bears the scar.It is sharp, words fail me. It is like someone twisting my stomach at will. The pain is unbearable. I know it is not every girl that deals with the pain but I do not envy them , I am just sad for myself. I read somewhere about hot water therapy. I struggled to get hot water in a bottle. It works midly , just like first aid to a serious injury.Time to take action, I got into my towel but unknown to me it was like a tap today. Red marks all over the floor, confessing to the world it was that time of the month . Could it be any better? I rush to take tissue paper. Meticulously, I wipe the floor. I had to hurry before"this girl is so dirty" spills all over my room.I had my wuruwuru bath, splattered conditioner on my to mentally wash it. It was washday after all.Nobody understands how I feel when 'red is the colour' . I couldn't even get out of my towel. I took garri I just to give room for painkillers.Painkillers are slow these days, always knocks me off. I slowly cave in to sleep. I still do not accept the explanation science provides everytime red is the colour.

LiteratureArt Events To Attend In November by Dasience(op): 11:56am On Nov 03, 2017
If you think you have not done much in the year or you have not attended events to your satisfaction, trust me when I say November is the month for you. From books to fashion to arts and poetry. It is like angels of events concluded that November will be the month for them. I rounded up events coming up in November that might catch your fancy ;[*]LAGOS INTERNATIONAL POETRY FESTIVAL Nov 1-5: I got to know about this through Instagram and I have never attended it. The theme of the festival is ‘Bridges from Walls’. Freedom Park I think is the major place.
