Domestic violence is a serious threat for many women. Know the signs of an abusive relationship and how to leave a dangerous situation. Your partner apologizes and says the hurtful behavior won't happen again — but you fear it will. At times you wonder whether you're imagining the abuse, yet the emotional or physical pain you feel is real. If this sounds familiar, you might be experiencing domestic violence. Recognize domestic violence Domestic violence — also called intimate partner violence — occurs between people in an intimate relationship. Domestic violence can take many forms, including emotional, sexual and physical abuse and threats of abuse. Men are sometimes abused by partners, but domestic violence is most often directed toward women. Domestic violence can happen in heterosexual or same-sex relationships. It might not be easy to identify domestic violence at first. While some relationships are clearly abusive from the outset, abuse often starts subtly and gets worse over time. You might be experiencing domestic violence if you're in a relationship with someone who: Calls you names, insults you or puts you down Prevents or discourages you from going to work or school Prevents or discourages you from seeing family members or friends Tries to control how you spend money, where you go, what medicines you take or what you wear Acts jealous or possessive or constantly accuses you of being unfaithful Gets angry when drinking alcohol or using drugs Threatens you with violence or a weapon Hits, kicks, shoves, slaps, chokes or otherwise hurts you, your children or your pets Forces you to have sex or engage in sexual acts against your will Blames you for his or her violent behavior or tells you that you deserve it. It's easy to pretend that all's well between Nigeria and South-Africa lately but recent developments between the 2 nations state otherwise. On one hand is the fatal involvement of 67 South-African nationals in a Lagos suburb building which sparked huge outrage in the former aparthied nation. This was followed by the seizure of $9.3m in cash from 2 Nigerians and an Isreali arms dealer at a South-African airport in a botched arms deal. The dust on these 2 events had hardly settled when the South-African authorities exposed another botched arms deal, this time involving $5.7m of Nigerian money. With the diplomatic war bubbling under the surface and the 2 African giants gearing for a war of words and bruised egos this time threatening to strain the economic/business ties between them, which country do you think would suffer the more when business starts taking hits? Would the Shoprites, MTNs and DSTVs continue doing business if the Nigerian authorities decide to make business unbearable for them? Do they have another market as big and profitable as Nigeria anywhere else on the continent? Can Nigerians afford to live without the services of the South-Africa owned companies? Do we have viable alternatives to the MTNs, Shoprites and DSTVs? Talk to us, we'd like to know... |
Just as the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Olusegun Aganga, was reiterating that investor confidence in the Nigerian economy is at an all time high, a conspiracy theory of sorts happens to be brewing in the diplomatic space between Nigeria and one of the countries at the forefront of its foreign investment drives, the other African economic giant, South-Africa. It's easy to pretend that all's well between Nigeria and South-Africa but recent developments between the 2 nations state otherwise. On one hand is the fatal involvement of 67 South-African nationals in a Lagos suburb building which sparked huge outrage in the former apartheid nation. Followed by the seizure of $9.3m in cash from 2 Nigerians and an Israeli arms dealer at a South-African airport in a botched arms deal. The dust on these 2 events had hardly settled when the South-African authorities exposed another botched arms deal, this time involving $5.7m of Nigerian money. The Nigerian authorities decried the whole botched arms deal matter as a calculated attempt at embarrassing the oil-rich nation in the international community which allegedly has its root in the purported envy shown by the South-Africans in the period Nigeria rebased her economy while the South-Africans insisted the deals were a breach of their own laws. With the diplomatic war bubbling under the surface and the 2 African giants gearing for a war of words and bruised egos this time threatening to strain the economic/business ties between them, how far do you think things will go? Should the Nigerian authorities be intent on carrying out the rumoured clamping down on South-African businesses in the country to teach them a lesson over the underlying row? Which country do you think would suffer the more when business starts taking hits? Can South-Africa and Nigeria afford to conjure a business war from the festering diplomatic row that's been bubbling under the surface for a short time now? Would the Shoprites, MTNs and DSTVs continue doing business if the Nigerian authorities decide to make business unbearable for them? Do they have another market as big and profitable as Nigeria anywhere else on the continent? Can Nigerians afford to live without the services of the South-Africa owned companies? Do we have viable alternatives to the MTNs, Shoprites and DSTVs? Talk to us, we'd like to know... |
