President Goodluck Jonathan and his campaign team held a rally today in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, with the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party vowing that he would ensure that more than 200 schoolgirls abducted in Chibok are rescued.Mr. Jonathan’s arrival in Maiduguri, the biggest city in the terror-plagued northeast area of Nigeria, led to the closure of several major roads to vehicles as early as 8 a.m. Some residents openly criticized the timing of the closure of roads on a Saturday even though the president arrived in Maiduguri about 1:30 p.m. 

On arrival at the airport, the president headed for the palace of the Shehu of Borno, the area’s traditional ruler. He arrived at Ramat Square, the venue of the rally, at 2:10 p.m.

Mr. Jonathan told a campaign crowd estimated at several thousand people that he would do everything to end the Boko Haram insurgency if re-elected. He admitted the low turn out at the campaign ground, noting that it was understood.

President Jonathan assured the rally that the Chibok girls would soon be reunited with their parents, adding that the rehabilitation of victims of Islamist insurgents would begin soon. He pledged to work towards the rebuilding of destroyed schools and communities. 

“We are all under terror, so let us join hands to conquer our common enemies,” Mr. Jonathan said. He added, “I am promising the whole of you that we shall surely end this insurgency. We will surely stop Boko Haram and we shall return Borno to what we used to know.

“Whatever it takes to do this and to ensure the return of the Chibok girls we will do. We will surely conquer Boko Haram. We will surely return this state to the peaceful state we know.” 

Speaking at the rally, former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff assured the president that he would win the presidential polls in Borno State if the election were free and fair. Mr. Sheriff, who is a senator and close ally of Mr. Jonathan, promised the president that Governor Kashim Shettima, who belongs to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC),  “cannot score 30 percent of the votes cast. If the security agencies will not interfere I can also assure you that the whole of Borno State is for you if we are going to conduct free and fair elections.”

Meanwhile, some of the residents told a correspondent of SaharaReporters that, with roads closed in the city, they walked up more than seven miles to reach the venue of the campaigns.

The Nigerian military is set for a final, and comprehensive onslaught against the extremist Boko Haram group, in an operation expected to end by before February election, a website that distributes press statements for the Nigerian military, has reported.


PRNigeria quoted a military source as saying that government forces have finalized plans to conduct a “once and for all comprehensive operations” towards the elimination of Boko Haram terrorists in parts of North East.
The news came a day after President Goodluck Jonathan’s National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, said the fighting has been undermined by “cowardly soldiers” who prefer giving every excuse in the world to fighting the extremists.
PRNigeria said the new military plan came as the Jonathan administration became so worried by the activities of Boko Haram, especially after viewing the latest video from the terror group, in which its leader, Abubakar Shekau, claimed they have enough weapons to overrun Nigeria and its neighbours.


The report said the military plan has been approved by the federal government, and has also received the assurance of cooperation and support of Cameroun, Niger and Chad, who now appear to have realised the danger posed by continuing to allow terrorists free movement across the borders.
“Nigerian military is reviewing strategy in the combat against terrorists to accommodate joint and combined operations with neighbouring military organisations,” the source was quoted as saying.
Massive deployment of air and amphibious assets are expected to feature in the operation.


Preparatory to the mission, the Defence Headquarters has changed the General Officer Commanding the 7 Division which is the leading formation in the counter-terrorism campaign, the source was quoted as saying.
The source said the deployment for the mission will facilitate the elimination of safe haven and escape routes of Boko Haram terrorists within Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
PRNigeria also reported that innocent citizens living in terrorist-infested areas are expected to vacate temporarily to safer towns.


Speaking to PRNigeria, Defence spokesperson, Chris Olukolade declined comment on details of the operation, he however, said the military would not relent in its efforts to restore peace to every part of the country.
He also admitted that all the countries bordering Nigeria are willing to compliment the efforts in Nigeria as terrorism has remained a menace or threat to all in the region.

If you understand the sociology and the political culture of Ekiti people, you will know that the result of June governorship election in Ekiti will not necessary translate into victory for Jonathan come Febuary 14, go and ask Dr. Fayemi, the teachers and civil servants of Ekiti danced and sang for him on Wednesday at the stadium before they crucified him on Saturday at the poll."
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Youth Network, Ekiti State chapter, has vowed to work against and ensure its presidential candidate, Goodluck Jonathan, loses woefully in the forthcoming February presidential poll.The State Coordinator of the network, Tope Musowo, made the threat in a press statement sent to the SaharaReporters office.

Musowo, who decried the way the ruling federal government is handling situation in the country, said President Jonathan has failed by surrounding himself with sycophants.

"It is quite unfortunate that President Jonathan surrounds himself with political vultures who will mess up his good works, and these people don’t care if he loses or not. Let me make it clear here that Ekiti voters are the most sophisticated voters in Nigeria.

The statement said the people of Ekiti State are already tired of Governor Fayose, saying, "Fayose will not realize that the people of Ekiti are already tired of him, just as they were with Fayemi then, you see the sociology of the state is such that when they decide this is where the state is going, that is it. This explains why Fayemi lost in all the 16 Local Government Areas, and those that are ignorant of the sociology of the state will always attribute it to stomach infrastructure. 

"Ekiti is an homogenous state, the only state in the south west where everybody is Ekiti, unlike in other states; for instance Ondo State, we have the Akokos, the Ilajes, Ondos, the Ijaws and so on, but in Ekiti, we are all Ekitis and this homogeneity helps unanimity and consensus. I see this playing out in February poll again.

“PDP Youth Network is the only organization that spread across the 16 Local Government Areas, 132 towns, and the 263 farmsteads in Ekiti; our structure is in all the 177 wards of the state, yet neither the party nor the state government acknowledges our efforts.

"They did not accord us any recognition in spite of efforts during the governorship election, we have written letters to the state governor since last year to give us audience, to intimate him with our activities and structure across the state, no way.

I only consented to address you this morning because of the genuine concern expressed by many supporters and other well-meaning Nigerians that the issue be addressed. Otherwise, I would have dismissed it for what it is - sheer mischief and would not have considered it an issue worth the nation’s while.

I had assumed all along that all my records were in the custody of the
Military Secretary of the Nigerian Army. Much to my surprise, we are now told that although a record of the result is available, there are no copies of the certificates in my personal file.

This is why I formally requested my old school the Provincial Secondary School, Katsina [which is now known as Government College, Katsina] to make available the school’s copy of the result of the Cambridge/West African School Certificate. This will be made available to the press the moment this is available.

However, before we obtain that, let me say for the record that I attended
Provincial Secondary School, Katsina. I graduated in 1961 with many
prominent Nigerians, including General Shehu Yar’Adua, former chief of staff at the Supreme Headquarters, and Justice Umaru Abdullahi, a former President of the Court of Appeal.

We sat for the University of Cambridge/WASC Examination together in 1961, the year we graduated. My examination number was 8280002, and I passed the examination in the Second Division.

And although the ruling party may want to wish this away, the issue in this campaign cannot be my certificate which I obtained 53 years ago.

The issues are the scandalous level of unemployment of millions of our young people, the state of insecurity, the pervasive official corruption which has impoverished our people and the lack of concern of the government for anything other than the retention of power at all costs.
