Crime / Group Calls For Justice Over The Death Of Engineer Murdered At Police HQ by datgidiboy: 7:52pm On Oct 15, 2020
The Association of Mechanical Engineering Students Alumni 2009 has called for Justice over the gruesome murder of one of their members, Charles Duruji.

Charles Duruji was the publicity secretary of ISOPADEC youth association and a youth leader in Izombe Oguta LGA of Imo State.
According to his father, Ignatius Duruji, Charles was killed on the premises of the Nigeria Police Force, New Heaven Divisional Police Headquarters, Enugu State on September 2, 2020.

According to his father in an interview, the police headquarters was attacked the day he visited and, he (Charles) was the only one killed on that day.
His father added that there was no gunshots and the police authority kept mute about it.

Calling for thorough investigation and justice, The Association of Mechanical Engineering Students Alumni 2009 and Media Initiative against Injustice, Violence and Corruption-MIIVOC have requested that the Inspector General of Police investigate his murder and bring the culprits to book.
Source: https://charmingpro.co.uk/group-calls-for-justice-for-engineer-murdered-in-police-headquarters-enugu/

Read their petition below:

The Inspector General of Police
Force Headquarters
Louis Edet House.
Abuja.
MURDER OF CHARLES CHIKWADO DURUJI: APPEAL FOR THOROUGH INVESTIGATION
Media Initiative against Injustice, Violence and Corruption-MIIVOC is a non-profit, independent, national civil society organization, with interest in promoting good governance, as well as the war against injustice, Violence, immorality, corruption and human rights abuses. It is a non-governmental, non-religious and non-sectarian initiative working with relevant stakeholders in addressing contemporary issues in our Society.
Our attention has been drawn to the alleged gruesome murder of one Charles Chikwado Duruji, a young Mechanical Engineering graduate from Izombe, Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State in the premises of New Heaven Divisional Police Headquarters, Enugu, Enugu State. The substance of the matter is as follows:
1. Mr. Chikwado Charles Duruji, a Mechanical Engineering graduate and youth leader in Izombe, Oguta LGA, Imo State, was allegedly murdered within the premises of the New Heaven Divisional Police Office of the Nigerian Police Force, Enugu State command.
2. The late Charles Duruji had travelled to the said Police station to see his fiancée, a Police lady, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Chidinma Victoria Nwala, who lives in the officers’ quarters located inside the Divisional Police Headquarters, when the incident occurred.
3. That, at about 10:30pm on Sunday, September 27, 2020, according to the fiancée, the late Charles noticed strange movements close to the entrance of their apartment and quickly asked her (the fiancée) to go into the toilet, where he locked her up for safety (according to ASP Nwala’s account).
4. That, shortly after that, their door was hacked down and Charles was dragged out by the assailants and all she heard was a loud scream by Charles, thus: Oh my God! Oh my God, three times.
5. That, later, neighbours came out and took Charles to the Hospital in his own pool of blood, as he was cut severally in the head and legs. According to her (the fiancée), at the Hospital, no Doctor was on duty, as Charles bled for more than four (4) hours without medical attention, before he finally gave up the ghost, at about 5am on the 28th of September, 2020.
6. That, we are convinced that the last is yet to be heard of the circumstances surrounding his death, as well as the real killers of late Charles Chikwado Duruji. We strongly suspect foul play.
7. That, it is strange that in a Divisional Police Headquarters, such an attack could happen unchallenged and that only one person (a target – Charles Duruji) is singled out to be killed.
8. That the comments allegedly made by a Policeman in the Division, whose name was given as Tony, thus: “when una brother dey come here dey do nonsense, why una no advise am”? Is very suspicious and calls for further investigation”
9. That, available reports show that the fiancée stated that “she called their Police Division so they could release the Patrol Van, but no support or help came. She called their Control number at the Enugu State Police Headquarters, but their response was that she should contact the DCO, that there was an Order.” This, for us is also very strange.
10. In view of the foregoing, we write to request that, you please, use your good offices to commission a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of late Chikwado Charles Duruji, with a view to unraveling those behind and the circumstances surrounding the dastardly act and bringing them to book. Everyone that has questions to answer should, please, be made to answer, in the interest of justice for the slain Charles Duruji.
11. It is also our prayer that the Office of the Inspector General of Police takes over the investigation of the matter, involving murder of the late Charles Duruji, as it is doubtful, if the Enugu State command will do justice to the matter, considering the circumstances surrounding the murder and the body language of the Command, since after the incident.
12. Please, accept the assurances of our best regards.

Health / COVID 19: Before We Ease The Lockdown... by datgidiboy: 9:04am On Apr 30, 2020
Before we ease the Lockdown… By: Segun Solomon Ogundapo

I want to laud the efforts of the federal and state governments of Nigeria in the fight against COVID-19 so far, particularly the NCDC. The current decision to begin a gradual easing of the lock down by President Buhari is an indication that the government is concerned about both saving lives as well as source of livelihood of Nigerians. The government is heavily leaning on on curfews, social distancing, hand washing/sanitizers and use of face mask to minimize spread of the virus as the nation gradually takes the dicey steps towards returning to normalcy.
You may agree with me that we have so far been doing a ‘copy and paste’ of standard WHO guidelines with little or no local content. Just like in a football match, we are just adopting a defensive formation and tactics against COVID-19. If we must win this battle, we have to also add some offense to our approach.

When Nigerians go out in May, most will be armed with sanitizers and facemasks -and of course with the confidence that they are protected from the virus- even though the WHO has warned that facemask has limited capacity to protect. Moreover, the fact that most of these masks will be home made or locally produced with fabrics instead of facemask with efficient material has called for additional measures- local content strategy- to deal with this situation.

In addition to the measures already put in place by the government, I want to suggest the chewing of fresh garlic and or with ginger by Nigerians as they go about their daily routines in addition to wearing mask and social distancing. Yes, garlic and ginger! I get miffed by efforts to discourage this in some quarters. How can some scientists be discouraging people from chewing garlic and ginger telling them it will not prevent the infection with COVID-19? Has any of such persons making such spurious claims published the findings of studies of in vitro or in vivo assay they know or conducted that suggest that ginger and garlic extracts are ineffective against this virus? Let them cite such publications. On the other hand, findings of the antiviral activities of ginger and garlic abound in the scientific literature (Naithani et al., 2010; Chang et al., 2013; Shojai et al., 2016). According to Shojai et al. (2013), in vitro assay of garlic extracts against Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) a type of coronavirus, showed inhibitory effect on IBV in chicken embryo. My point is that it’s better to supplement wearing of face mask with chewing of garlic and ginger in moderate amount than to wear face mask and chew nothing. On a hilarious note, the smell of garlic in your breath should encourage others to give you enough ‘social distance spacing’. Besides, chewing of garlic and or ginger can provide a placebo effect that is better than nothing.

I also want health providers to inculcate plant-based treatment in management of this disease. Eminent patriotic scientists from the University of Ibadan recently presented a brilliant review of the scientific literature with respect to the respiratory signs and symptoms ameliorating potentials of extracts of Euphobia hirta plant readily found in some parts of Nigeria when used to locally treat respiratory infections. This plant according to ethnobotanical survey reports in the scientific literature, is used to manage respiratory disorders similar to those found in mild COVID-19 cases. They even suggest that if applied properly to manage COVID-19 cases, it can reduce the need for ventilators. Or are we going to ignore such because a prophet has no honour in his village? This is war and nothing must be left to chance! We have to throw everything we got at COVID-19 like the desperate men that we are.

I also want to suggest that our pharmaceutical companies come up with mass production of spray solutions that can be sprayed on surfaces and on locally made face mask that is capable of inhibiting the virus when it makes contact with such. A good candidate is the monoglyceride; Monocaprin which has been shown to have antibacterial and virucidal activity against a plethora of enveloped RNA viruses (Thormar et., al., 1987; Thormar et al., 1999; Kristmundsdottir et a., 1999; Thorgeirsdottir et al., 2003; Thorgeirsdottir et al.,2005; Patlolla et al., 2019). It is relatively non toxic to humans in the concentrations used and even used as a food additive (Ma et al., 2018). Because of its limited solubility in water, monocaprin can be solubilized with Tween 20 (polysorbate 20) as described by Thorgeirsdottir et al. (2003). Tween 20 is relatively non toxic to humans with detergent like properties which coupled with the virucidal activity of monocaprin can inactivate COVID-19 when it falls on face mask worn or other surfaces. Amphipathic nature of detergents and soaps makes them capable of disrupting the macromolecular integrity or structure of viruses especially enveloped RNA viruses like COVID-19 inactivating them in the process. That’s is why hand washing with soap is prescribed by the WHO. In theory, it might even be beneficial to soak a washed face mask in clean soap or detergent solution and allowed to dry before reuse rather than reuse a washed and water rinsed one. Theoretically, when expectorated droplets containing corona virus falls on the mask, it will be subject to the detergent based antimicrobial activity of the dried soap or detergent and a significant viral load may get denatured or in activated. This like I said is theory that’s is based on facts.

In summary, my point is that as the lock down is about to be eased, the policy makers should think outside the box and let’s not rely on washing of hands with soap and water, social distancing (which we all know is hardly working in our setting) or wearing of face masks only. We should fortify these measures with the ones already highlighted in this write-up and who knows, we may come out of the woods earlier than projected.

This one too shall pass..

I am your countryman

This dress was for the show, not the red carpet... Y'all don't know how the winners were selected.. Only the first 16 people who came to the red carpet between 4pm and 5pm and took photos at a dedicated booth were nominated for best dreesed.. irrespective of their outfit.. Truth is the outfit Mercy wore for the red carpet was okay but doesn't deserve the win.. it's a popularity contest not a fashion contest... AMVCA should do better.

Politics / National Youth Council Condemns The Recent Violence In Anambra, Calls For Peace by datgidiboy: 2:47pm On Dec 08, 2019
The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Anambra West Chapter has called for peace among indigenes of Odekpe and Allah/Onugwa Communities in the Local Government. This is because, the age-long peace and harmony the people used to enjoy have been truncated by the recent attacks and counter-attacks between the two communities and many individuals seriously traumatized, resulting in loss of lives? injuries and displacement of villagers.
For proper development to take place in our Local government, we MUST be ready to live together in peace since no development can take place in an atmosphere of violence and war.
The organization strongly condemns this violence, and we urge the state government to take steps towards bringing peace to the area. We also call on the state police command to kindly mobilize its personnel to the affected communities to contain the crisis.
Odekpe and Allah/Onugwa are communities in Anambra West Local Government bordering Kogi state. Families have been left injured and traumatized over violence that broke out days ago due to land dispute that has lingered for years.
Finally, we call on the traditional rulers to liaise and work in tandem with their subjects for the peace and unity of their areas.

Comrade Gift Adene

Education / Council Intervenes As ASUP Unwana Gives Conditions To Call Off Strike by datgidiboy: 7:39am On Aug 18, 2019
The industrial action embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Unwana chapter, seems far from over; as management of Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Unwana (AIFPU) is yet to meet the demands of the union.

The union had embarked on an indefinite strike on Thursday, August 1, 2019, over non-payment of 27 months Peculiar Academic Allowance (PAA) arrears owed its members by management of AIFPU, the condition of service, poor office accommodation, among other issues. (Read Here: https://www.nairaland.com/5337567/asup-poly-unwana-embarks-indefinite )

However, in a statement made available to Blueprint Weekend in Abuja Saturday, jointly signed by chairman of the union, Mr Felix Uga Idu and publicity secretary, Mr Ukegbu Chibuzo, the union said that “AIFPU management has only paid 2 out of 27 months; with the argument that it does not have adequate internally generated revenue (IGR) to fund payment of the allowances”.

They said that, despite the intervention by council of the institution, which pleaded with the union to suspend its strike while it looks into the matters raised, “they do not need a cosmetic fix to the current face-off; rather working to seeing that a permanent solution is realised.”

The statement reads in part: “In the wake of management’s argument that it does not have adequate IGR to fund the payment of the allowances, the union came up with a position paper that revealed other sources of IGR that were not listed as IGR sources hitherto. The paper was presented to management and the council of the institution. The council, on receiving the document, promised to set up a committee to look into the document to ascertain its veracity or otherwise.

“However, the IGR sources are well known to everyone as fees/charges collected from students at various levels.

The union argues that the identified sources be used to defray the accumulated allowances. On its part, the council pleaded with the union to suspend its strike, while it looks into the matters raised. However, the union does not need a cosmetic fix to the current face-off. Rather, it is working to seeing that a permanent solution is realized.

“A memorandum of agreement (MoA) has to be done, which will contain the management’s plan for the payment of the remaining months, after the management’s must have paid a substantial number of months (instead of the 2 months it has paid out of 27months).”

It could be recalled that on the day of the congress, where the decision to embark on this current strike was taken, the Rector, Ven. Dr. Ogbonnaya Ibe Enwo, made an offer of one month out of the 27 months arrears of PAA owed, whereas the last time the management made an attempt at defraying the arrears was last December 2018, when it paid 5 months out of 25 months arrears then.

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) Unwana Chapter executives ran for their dear lives today, the 6th of August, 2019 as the IPPIS officers sent by the Federal Government to capture staff members of the polytechnic fight them off the venue.

The Executives which comprises the Chapter Chairman, Publicity secretary and the monitoring team, were at the enrollment venue of the polytechnic (Old Lecture Theater, AIFPU) to  dissuade members from enrolling and heed to the Union's National directive as grey areas were not captured in the IPPIS template, but they were chased out by the officials who appeared to be angered by the act!

Education / ASUP Members Shun Rector's Plea, Embarks On An Indefinite Strike Over Debt by datgidiboy: 8:33am On Aug 04, 2019
On Thursday, 1st of August 2019. The Academic staff union of polytechnics (ASUP), Federal plytechnic Unwana, Ebonyi state chapter, embarked on an indefinite strike despite Rector's plea over unpaid allowances of 27 months. This is coming after one of her members, Dr John Ibiam moved a motion for the chapter to embark on the industrial action over non payment of Peculiar Academic Allowance (PAA) for 27 months by the school management!
The Rector , Ven Ibe Enwo however was there and pleaded with the union. He promised to pay that of one month out of the 27 months owed, but the union members refused, asking him to make it 10 or 15 months. Voting was done and a 37 as against 35 votes were casted in favour of the strike!

The publicity secretary of the union further sent SMS to members directing them to stay at home.

I'm directed to inform all members that ASUP in congress has declared an indefinite strike. This is sequel to the inability of mgt to offset the 27months of PAA owed staff. Consequently, all academic activities are hereby withdrawn pending when all our agitations are fully met by mgt.

Academic staff were advised not to engage in any academic activities including: lectures, project/seminar supervision, departmental/academic board meeting and more.
