Celebrities / Seun Kuti Appoints Femi Falana As His Lawyer by datopaper(m): 6:06am On May 15, 2023
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has said he will provide legal services to Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, who sought his intervention following the singer’s alleged assault on a police officer.

The SAN, who confirmed the development to our correspondent on Sunday, said the singer had enough evidence to defend himself.

This was as the Police Service Commission demanded the immediate prosecution of the musician, saying no one had the right to assault a policeman in uniform and on official duty, no matter the offence committed by police officer.

Reacting to an inquiry by our correspondent on Sunday, Falana said, “I am his (Seun Kuti’s) lawyer and he has briefed me. He certainly has evidence. This is not the first time he is dealing with the police.”

There were also speculations on Sunday that a team of police officers drafted to effect Kuti’s arrest could not locate him upon getting to his residence.

However, efforts to confirm the development from the police authorities proved abortive, as the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, and the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, did not respond to inquiries by our correspondent.

Falana while reacting to this disclosed that the embattled singer would turn himself in on Monday.

He added, “He (Seun) is going to report himself to the police tomorrow (Monday) morning. There is no problem at all.”

The PUNCH reported that a viral video of the musician assaulting a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State went viral on Saturday.

In the 12-second video, Kuti, who wore a red shirt and white pair of trousers, was seen pushing a policeman, who stood beside a Toyota Hilux police van. He then proceeded to slap the cop, as he shouted, “You dey craze, you dey mad?”

A motorist, who filmed the incident from his car, was heard saying, “Omo na Kuti o. Na better news be this o.”

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, reacting, ordered the arrest of the singer.

The IG equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the alleged assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly.
.
This was as the musician, in a social media post on Saturday, alleged that the policeman in question made an attempt on his life and those of his family members.

The Police Service Commission, on Sunday, demanded immediate prosecution of Afrobeat musician.

The PSC Chairman, Dr Solomon Arase, a retired Inspector-General of Police, said Seun’s arraignment would serve as a deterrent to other citizens, adding that no one has the right to assault a policeman in uniform and on official duty, no matter the offence committed by police officer.

The Head, Press and Public Relations, PSC, Ikechukwu Ani, in a statement on Sunday, said, “The commission demands that the culprit must be arraigned immediately and that the Inspector General must ensure that the matter is followed to its logical conclusion to restore public confidence in the Nigeria Police as the lead agency in internal security and in its ability to maintain law and order and also protect lives and properties.

“We look forward to the prompt prosecution of Seun to act as a deterrent to others of his ilk.”

Arase commended the police officer for refusing to be provoked by the action of his aggressor, a development he said would have been more fatal.

“The PSC chairman said it was unfortunate that at a time the management of the Nigeria Police were dealing decisively with officers who harass, intimidate or assault civilians on our roads and work places, the same police officers have become victims of the actions of some uncultured elites.

“He said the police should use the present incident to set an example that this will never be tolerated in Nigeria, a country governed by laws, rules and regulations.”

A Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Mr Malcolm Omorhrihobo, told The PUNCH that the musician risked being charged under Section 98 of the

Police Act and Section 356 of the Criminal Code, which is operational in the South-West, noting that “If the police are able to prove their case in court, he is liable to be sentenced to three years’ jail term if convicted of the offence.”

Section 356 of the Criminal Code Act reads,“ Anyone who assaults, resists, or willfully obstructs a police officer while acting in the execution of his duty, or any person acting in aid of a police officer while so acting is guilty of felony and is liable to imprisonment for three years.”

Politics / Re: 2023: Here’s What To Know About Nigeria's Presidential Election - CNN by datopaper(m): 11:35am On Feb 24, 2023
This is my summation. Don't say i did not tell you. Nigeria democracy is on course. It will evolve stronger. Pre Buhari has done is best, next government will built on it.

My prediction of the results.

Rabiu Musa is a spoiler for Atiku in the north while Obi will do same in the South. G5 has decimated him. But not withstanding, he will pull up to 10-14m votes.

Tinubu with the support of the governors in the north if they are loyal. He will carry the day. And the support of the southern governors too.

What will consume Atiku now is propel by him in 2002-2003. Thinking he was prepare himself to take over government from his boss.

What are those things? He empowers the governors including Tinubu of the opposition party. Remember James onanefe Ibori of Delta and many others. It is a long story.

So, when he was later persuaded to allow Obasanjo second term which he obliged. With the agreement that the later will support him to succeed him 2007.

Immediately, Obasanjo was re-elected, he renege and follow the path Atiku has initiated before.

The governors.

Since 2007, you can't be president without the support of the governors, go and verify.

Politics / Supreme Court Lambasts Critics Of Recent Judgements by datopaper(m): 3:07pm On Feb 11, 2023
…says channel your attacks on political parties

The Supreme Court on Saturday came hard on some Nigerians who had been “venting convoluted anger”, following its recent pronouncements, which affirmed a former Governor of the Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, and Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, senatorial candidates of the All Progressives Congress in the February 25 elections.

The Apex Court warned purveyors of such attacks on the judiciary and Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, especially the United States-based Professor, Farooq Kperogi and Progressive Minds Forum, to desist and channel such energies to political parties which “fail to organise themselves well.”

The Director of Press And Information in Supreme Court, Dr Festus Akande, issued the warning in a statement titled, “Be mindful of unwarranted attacks on judicial officers.”

According to him, as of the moment, over 600 cases have so far gone to court from just party primaries which were conducted by political parties without any encumbrance or interference from any external bodies.

The statement reads, “We have watched with utter dismay some unfortunate events that have been unfolding in the country, particularly within the political landscape, for some days now.

“It is so disheartening to learn that some individuals and groups of persons who ought to know better and even assume the revered positions of role models to a larger proportion of the citizens are now sadly, the very ones flagrantly displaying ignorance and infantilism in the course of defending the indefensible.

“In an ineptly scripted toxic article, one Farooq Adamu Kperogi, who described himself as a Nigerian-American Professor, decided to plunge into an abysmal pit of irredeemable ignorance by venting convoluted anger on Supreme Court Justices with a view to pleasing his paymasters.

“We have made it abundantly clear on different occasions that Judicial Officers are neither political office holders nor politicians that should be dressed in such robes.

“Our silence must not be mistaken for weakness or cowardice.

“Certainly, every Nigerian citizen has an inalienable right to express his or her opinion without any encumbrance; but even in the course of expressing such fundamental right, we should be circumspect enough to observe the caution gate of self-control in order not to infringe on another person’s right.

“Even in a state of emotional disequilibrium, we should be reasonable enough to make a good choice of decent words, as every word employed by the pen-happy Kperogi only succeeded in portraying the kind of vacuum that sign-posts all that he has as academic accomplishment.

“I believe those who possess similar credentials with him are obviously ashamed of celebrating any form of affinity with such a character that has an odious reputation for being a serial verbal assailant over the years, as he see
“So, will the political parties, Kperogi or any individual now accuse the court of causing such unpleasant intra-party wrangling that defied all internal conflict resolution mechanisms?

“Most times, some people try as much as possible to disingenuously stand logic on its head to show their level of unimaginable dexterity.

“Those who have cultivated the unfashionable penchant of always attacking the Judiciary over every judgment or ruling given should better have a rethink and start channelling such robust energy into some ventures that are more developmental than destructive.

“We are not politicians and should not, by any stroke of imagination, be cast in that mould either.

“Nobody’s interest can ever supersede the interest of everybody. Nigeria is bigger than every one of us. A word is enough for the wise

Politics / Fuel Scarcity Will Ease Off Next Week, Kyari Assures Nigerians by datopaper(m): 9:56pm On Feb 07, 2023
The Group Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, Mele Kyari, has assured Nigerians that the lingering fuel scarcity will ease off next week.

Kyari said this in a video clip shown on Channels Television on Tuesday evening.

He however said he could not assure that the queues at the fuel stations would disappear, but added that there would be significant improvement in the next one week

He said, “Now within the next one week, I’m not saying that you’re going to have zero queues within the next one week, no, because a number of things are out of our control, and of course the market forces will determine some of these issues.

“But I believe that we’re going to see substantial and relative ease compared to today in the next one week.

The PUNCH reports that the fuel scarcity coupled with the scarcity of both the new and old naira notes have brought untold hardship on citizens, crippling economic activities across the country.

Consequently, protests have broken out in various states and cities across the federation, with citizens lamenting the twin scarcity and its impact of their businesses and everyday lives.

Recall that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had also asked Nigerians last week Friday to give him seven days from then to resolve the naira crisis, with two days left to the completion of the seven days requested for by the President.
