The fate of out of contract Super Eagles coach, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi will be defined by the yet to be elected Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation, Vanguard investigations have revealed. Our usually dependable source revealed that, so long as the NFF exco remains to be elected, Keshi’s services will be needed on a match-by- match basis. “For now, that is the much management can do.” The source further disclosed that because there was no EXCO on ground, the management could not take any further step than to hire him on match by match basis.. “Management cannot go ahead and employ the coach because it is not known whether the new board would want him or not,” our source said. As things stand, Keshi’s future with the Super Eagles remains uncertain as the FA seeks to regain its stability with the September 30 elections of a new board in Warri. The Aminu Maigari-led board was ready to dispense with Keshi after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but the crisis that followed after the World Cup resulted in creating a vacuum for the post of a head coach for the team. This in turn necessitated the Sports Minister’s intervention when he called in Keshi to lead the team to the first phase of the 2015 Afcon qualifiers which the Eagles have garnered a solitary point from a possible six after a 2-3 loss to Congo and a goalless draw against South Africa. The outcome of the two matches have done great disservice to Keshi’s bid to return. As it appears, the coach will continue to handle the team on a match-by-match basis until the coming board formalises his contract or dispenses with him. source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/09/nff-hire-keshi-match-match-basis/

In what could be yet another topical discussion in Nigerian football, out of contract Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi has effectively ruled out the chances of having Seattle Sounders of America striker, Obafemi Martins and Manchester City wonder kid Kelechi Iheanacho called up to the Eagles in the nearest future. There have been calls from different quarters for the inclusion of the 17-year-old prodigy (Iheanacho), who shone brightly at the last FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, to the Super Eagles, but Keshi, whose future with the team remains uncertain at the moment, has killed whatever hopes Nigerians had of seeing Iheanacho in the next qualifiers for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. “Iheanacho hasn’t been playing in the premier league and it simply tells you that Manchester City wants him to get more experience,” said Keshi. “He is not part of the team (City) at the moment and he has to get more experience and maybe see if he has what it takes to be there.” According to Keshi, Martins’ desire to return to the Super Eagles is admirable, but not possible because according to him, the former Inter Milan striker has got to give a chance to the younger players. “For Obafemi Martins, it’s good to indicate interest to play for his country, as a former player of course. “But we have other players out there in his position, younger players. So we have to give younger players a chance and the opportunity to grow,” Keshi insisted. This will come as a big shock to Martins, who hasn’t hidden his desire to return to the team and had earlier said he hoped his good goal scoring form will earn him a recall. However, Keshi has obviously ended the chance of any of that happening, if he remains in charge. source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/09/keshi-rules-obafemi-iheanacho-eagles/

DAVECENA: A Nigerian military intelligence sourcesource: http://saharareporters.com/2014/09/22/“abubakar-shekau”-killed-was-one-bashir-mohammed |
A Nigerian military intelligence source has told SaharaReporters that the top Boko Haram figure killed in a recent operation was one Bashir Mohammed, leader of the Islamist sect’s Uye camp. Mohammed Bashir's body in Konduga Cameroonian authorities yesterday released a photo of a dead man they identified as Abubakar Shekau, the loquacious and attention-seeking leader of the terrorist group that has launched deadly strikes in Nigeria’s northeast zone as well as Cameroon. The Nigerian intelligence source told SaharaReporters that Nigerian soldiers, not Cameroonian troops, had killed Mr. Bashir last Friday in a fierce battle against Boko Haram insurgents in Konduga, Borno State. The late Mr. Bashir, who bore a striking resemblance to Abubakar Shekau and had appeared in a recent video, was killed as he led insurgents who were attempting to capture Konduga and then made a bid to seize Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, as well. Nigerian soldiers routed the Islamist militants in Konduga, killing hundreds of them and capturing weapons as well as vehicles abandoned by fleeing insurgents. The military as well as Nigerian government- appointed negotiators claim that the original Mr. Shekau had died since last year, reportedly assassinated by his lieutenants. The intelligence source said Mr. Bashir had adopted Mr. Shekau’s nom deguere and had been the person responsible for issuing video messages in recent times. Even though our source said the military was cautious not to claim credit for Mr. “Shekau’s” death, he added that the Nigerian military was buoyed by the capture of the armored tank usually displayed in the background of recent videos issued by the sect’s spokesman. source: http://saharareporters.com/2014/09/22/“abubakar-shekau”-killed-was-one-bashir-mohammed

Ahmed Salkida, a Dubai-based Nigerian journalist who reportedly maintains communication with some leaders of the Islamist insurgent group Boko Haram, claimed today that the sect’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, is alive and well. Mr. Salkida denied reports asserting that Nigerian troops had killed the mercurial and fiendish Shekau, the speaker and voice in numerous videos released by Boko Haram. Ahmed Salkida, journalist In a tweet earlier today, Mr. Salkida also dismissed media reports that the Nigerian government was negotiating with Boko Haram for the release of more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped in mid-April by Boko Haram militants in Chibok, Borno State. The reporter’s tweet also described as untrue reports that the International Red Cross (IRC) was working on a deal that would persuade Boko Haram to free the abducted Chibok schoolgirls in exchange for the release of detained Islamist insurgents in the custody of Nigerian security agencies. source: http://saharareporters.com/2014/09/22/journalist-close-boko-haram-says-abubakar-shekau-“alive-and-well”

The South African judge in the Oscar Pistorius trial has cleared the athlete of charges of premeditated murder and second-degree murder. “The state clearly has not proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused is guilty of premeditated murder,” Thokozile Masipa said. He can still be found guilty of culpable homicide or acquitted. Earlier, the judge also said Mr Pistorius made a ‘”conscious decision to shoot”. She said some witnesses in the murder trial failed to separate their own evidence from details contained in press coverage. Judge Masipa found there was “some doubt” a woman screamed on the night of the shooting. The Olympic and Paralympic athlete is accused of killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year. He said he shot her after mistaking her for an intruder at his home near Pretoria. The prosecution alleged that he intentionally murdered her after a row. Judge Masipa will determine Mr Pistorius’s fate alone as South Africa does not have trial by jury. The 27-year-old double-amputee also faces firearms charges. The case has heard from scores of witnesses and captivated a global audience with dramatic and heartbreaking scenes. In one night, Mr Pistorius was transformed from a global sporting icon to murder suspect. A little more than six months before the shooting, he made history at London 2012 by becoming the first amputee sprinter to compete in the Olympic Games. Then in the early hours of 14 February 2013, the athlete, who had his lower legs amputated as a baby, fired his 9mm pistol through a closed toilet door at his home. Ms Steenkamp, 29, suffered fatal injuries after she was hit in the head, arm and hip. It was a tragic end to a budding romance that saw the pair labelled the ‘Posh and Becks’ of South Africa after they started dating three months earlier. Interest in the subsequent case was intense, and a ruling that parts of the trial could be broadcast live on television added to the scrutiny. It opened in March and involved physical as well as oral evidence, with one forensic analyst demonstrating in court how Mr Pistorius may have hit the toilet door with a cricket bat. In June, after the trial was halted for a month, experts concluded that Mr Pistorius was not suffering from mental illness at the time of the shooting. His reactions as the case against him was set out ranged from crying during evidence about texts they exchanged, and vomiting at a description of her injuries, to calmly taking notes and talking to his lawyers. Mr Pistorius was on the stand for five days of intense cross-examination from chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel. source: http://www.today.ng/news/south-african-judge-clears-oscar-pistorius-of-murder-charges/

The son of former president Olusegun Obasanjo, Lt Col Adeboye Obasanjo, who was shot and wounded by Boko Haram militants in a fight in Adamawa State Monday has been discharged from hospital, officials at the Federal Medical Centre said in Yola yesterday. However, it emerges yesterday that a colonel in the Nigerian Army is feared killed in the current offensive against Boko Haram insurgents in Adamawa state. The officer, whose name was simply given as Col Yakubu, was reportedly shot and killed in the same operation in which Lt Col Adeboye Obasanjo was wounded over the weekend. The family members of Col Yakubu who have become aware of the incident are now said to be in Yola, concerned that their son may have been dead already, Daily Trust reports. They are said to be asking for true information about the colonel and requesting as well that his whereabouts be disclosed to them dead or alive. When contacted yesterday the Defence spokesman Major General Chris Olukolade said, the officer in question is considered Missing in Action. Obasanjo’s son was injured in Bazza, northern Adamawa State during a failed bid by troops to re-take the town from Boko Haram insurgents. He was taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) where he spent two days receiving treatment. “He had a minor injury and he was treated and discharged,” a senior official said. “He received the best attention that we could possibly offer and he responded quickly.” Security concerns also contributed to his early discharge, the source said, disclosing that it was the military top brass who suggested that he should be discharged and flown out of the state. The Information Officer of the FMC Malam Adamu Dodo confirmed the story, stressing that both his speedy recovery and the security factor contributed to his early release. “There is also the issue of his safety given the attention the story has been getting”, he said. The case has been receiving huge public attention and high profile personalities have been visiting him. Meanwhile, additional details have emerged on how the former president’s son was shot and wounded by the militants. It was gathered that Lt Col Obasanjo and some other officers were overwhelmed by the insurgents because the soldiers failed to obey the orders of their commanders. The unnamed source said when the soldiers were confronted by the insurgents in Bazza, their commanders ordered them to fight but they failed to do so effectively. As soon as the insurgents opened fire on them, they ran without standing their ground to fight back as ordered by their superiors. He said that was why some of the soldiers were killed and others, including Obasanjo’s son, were injured. He also said Bazza, Michika, Gulak and Madagali are still under the firm control of the insurgents. source: http://www.today.ng/news/terror-aftermath-obasanjos-son-discharged-from-hospital-col-yakubu-feared-dead/

DAVECENA: The National Examinations Council (NECO) hassource: http://dailypost.ng/2014/09/10/52-percent-credit-pass-recorded-neco-releases-2014-ssce-results/ |
The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced that 52.29 percent of the candidates that sat for June/July 2014 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) passed at credit level in five subjects, including English Language and mathematics. The Registrar and Chief Executive officer of the Council, Professor Promise Okpala, who announced the result in Minna, said 74.30 percent of the candidates made five credits and above generally. He said that 978,886 candidates of the 989,622 that registered sat for the examination, which was conducted in 76 subjects. Of 989,622 candidates that wrote the examination, 72.58 percent scored credit level and above in English Language, while 69.49 percent made similar grades in mathematics. In sciences, 72.86 percent of candidates that sat for Chemistry had credits, while 69.38 percent of physics candidates had credit levels and in biology 67.83 percent of the candidates made credit grades. Okpala said that beyond the cost of running the examination, insecurity in many parts of the country grossly affected the logistic operations of the council during the school based examination. The registrar also said that efforts of the council at reducing examination malpractices paid off as only 0.44 percent of those who sat for the examination were involved in malpractices. A comparative analysis of past results showed a steady improvement in results over the past three years. |

As the Super Eagles is set to face the Bafana Bafana of south Africa, what are your predictions? |
The 2014 World Cup Final was an entertaining match that saw Germany, the tournament's best side, come out 1-0 winners over Argentina after extra time. Wednesday's game was a rematch between the teams, but it came nowhere near close to matching the intensity from what we saw in Brazil . It was plenty of fun, though, with Argentina downing the world champions, 4-2. The Germans didn't bring out the World Cup Trophy in respect for Argentina, but the game started slightly late due to it being the first home match since the mid-July triumph in Rio. Bastian Schweinsteiger was named captain of Die Nationalmannschaft this week, but was unable to take part in the match due to a knee injury. This meant Manuel Neuer was Germany's captain. New Argentina boss Tata Martino was without Lionel Messi , but many of the players who were equally responsible for getting La Albiceleste to the final took part in this friendly. Somewhat predictably, Martin Demichelis picked up the first booking of the match in the 17th minute for a poor challenge taking out Marco Reus. Twenty minutes in, Sergio Agüero got on the end of a beautiful outside-of-the-foot ball from just outside the area put in by new Manchester rival Ángel di Maria to put the visitors up, 1-0. Germany had a great chance after Argentina committed a sloppy turnover in their defensive third, but Sergio Romero was up to the task and saved the shot from Mario Gòmez. Agüero missed a chance to double his money 33 minutes on when his shot went just wide left after breaking down the right. Promising Schalke youngster Julian Draxler was forced off with an injury in the 34th minute, and was replaced by Lukas Podolski . Draxler was able to jog off, so it was mostly precautionary. Draxler off, dead leg (possibly) It got worse for the Germans in the 41st minute, when Erik Lamela smashed a volley into the top left corner, giving Neuer no chance after a cross from, you guessed it, di Maria. Gòmez missed another brilliant chance, shooting wide past an empty net after Romero could only parry a powerful Reus effort straight back at the attackers. Roman Weidenfeller replaced Neuer in goal to begin the second half, and Podolski got the armband. Di Maria got his assist hat trick when Federico Fernández powered in a header at the back post on a cross from a set piece. Di Maria then hit a perfect chip shot just 3 minutes later, and before 50 minutes had gone in the match, it was 4-0. Germany responded almost instantly, as André Schürrle shot straight at Romero after the corner came in, and the rebound went right back to the Chelsea man who put it back in the net. Mario Götze scored in the 78th minute to make it 4-2, after striking the ball into the middle of a crowd of Argentina defenders, striking one and going past Romero into the net. The goal frenzy was over after that, with both teams using all six subs eventually in hopes of seeing what some of their lesser-used players can do. Germany: Manuel Neuer (Roman Weidenfeller 46'); Kevin Großkreutz, Mattias Ginter, Benedikt Höwedes (Anthony Rüdiger 77'), Erik Durm; Christoph Kramer, Toni Kroos (Sebastian Rudy 71'); André Schürrle (Thomas Müller 57') , Marco Reus, Julian Draxler (Lukas Podolski 34'); Mario Gòmez (Mario Götze 57'). Goals: Schürrle (52') Götze (78') Argentina: Sergio Romero (Mariano Andújar 80'); Pablo Zabaleta ( Hugo Campagnaro 77'), Federico Fernández, Martin Demichelis, Marcos Rojo; Enzo Pérez (Augusto Fernández 46'), Javier Mascherano , Lucas Biglia; Erik Lamela ( Fernando Gago 68'), Sergio Agüero (Nico Gaitán 84'), Ángel di Maria (Ricardo Álvarez 86'). Goals: Agüero (20'), Lamela (40'), Fernández (47'), di Maria (49')

Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Pinnich Amaju tells JOHN EGBOKHAN in this interview that Nigeria would have had a better outing at the World Cup in Brazil if Coach Stephen Keshi had worked with a team of technical experts working in the backroom. The 2014 World Cup has entered the quarterfinal stage , with no African team featuring amongst the eight surviving teams in the tournament. African champions, the Super Eagles crashed out in the second round, leaving in its wake tales of woes for many Nigerians, who were expecting the team to do better. What s your professional assessment of our perfoamcne at the World Cup? I feel that we as a people should properly situate what we want to achieve in our life. I feel sad when I hear people say that we did well at the World Cup. I also feel sad to see that Nigerians are contented with just being amongst the participants in major tournaments like the World Cup. I strongly believe that if we do the right things that we should be winning the World Cup. In 1994, after the USA World Cup, we were ranked the fifth best team in the world. We were highly regarded then but now the story has changed for the worse. And the reason for our decline is complacency. Nigerians are so complacent. We are where we are because we are not doing the right things. And doing the right things is very simple. We should also be ambitious enough to play in the semifinals of the World Cup. And our ambition should be backed with action. Was the team to the World Cup in Brazil not ambitous enough? Many factors came into play to determine the degree of ambition of the team. And to arrive at the right answer, I am looking at the facilitating factors and predisposing factors. The Nigeria Football Federation gave the team all that they requiired to have a succesful World Cup. Six top friendly matches were organsied, camping was top-notch, all the monies due the players were promptly and fully paid to ensure that the team focussed on the task of excelling in Brazil. The only money that was not paid was the FIFA appearance fee, which normally comes out from FIFA some four months after the end of the tournament. So I was shocked when reports of players agitating for their share of the FIFA appearcne fee came out. Conventional wisdom would dictate that when there is agitation in a team, one should also look at the top in determining who is behind what. It is also common knowledge that some persons on the technical crew knew that they would be out of job after the World Cup and aware of the bureaucracy in government, fear that their share of the appearance fee was not going to get to them when they would be out of service. So if there is agitation in the team, the first person to point at is the coaches because when any money is paid, they also get a bigger chunk of it. I would not go further than that. The predisposing factors are the NFF, who gave the team all the supprrt to succeed. They also provided a 200-seater aeroplane to take Nigerian officials around in Brazil to watch the Super Eagles matches. The facilitating factors are the coaches and what they bring to the team. I do not have anything against Keshi. He has done so well for Nigeria. He remains the first Nigerian to win the Nations Cup as a player and a coach. The records are there, But I feel that he should also come down from his high horse and show respect to the NFF, who are his employeer and who have done a lot to make him succeed. We fauiled to go further in Brazil because our coaches did not adopt the scientific approach to winning matches. Football has gone beyond having a coaching crew on the bench. The trend is now to have the technical backroom staff, peopled by expert coaches, who win matches from the bench. I give you an example. Berti Vogts was the head of the backroom of the USA team at the World Cup. The story was said in Brazil that during the match against Ghana, that when the Ghanaians equalised, that Klinsmann, who is the coach of the USA team, quickly sent a message to Vogts to analyse the last five minutes of the match. Vogts responded that one of the Ghanaian defenders was limping and that they should exploit his side, which the USA team did and scored the winner. Klinsmann did this because he recognises that he does not see the things that other technical experts could see from afar. And that is largely because a coach is only thinking of winning and what his players are doing. He hardly sees the defects and strong-points of his opponents. That is why nearly all the teams at the World Cup have the technical backroom staff. But Nigeria did not have that and that was because Keshi did not want it. He thought that they were going to take his job away and we all saw in Brazil that it could have been very different if we had such technical experts in the backroom, advising Keshi during match days or even before. Another example is the injury of Ogenyi Onazi. That was not accidentral. It was a deliberate plan by the French backroom staff, whio saw Onazi as the only threat to their ambition to reach the next round. Ahmed Musa shone like a star in the first half but was taken out in the second half by the French players, who crowded him and made him ineffective. That is the work of the backroom staff . Football has gone scientific but we went to Btrazil with analogue system I also observed during the hort stay in Braziol that we were the only team, whose players warmed up before the start of matches without the coaches around to watch and take notes. I may be wrong on this but I saw the French team warm up with their coaches watching and guiding them. Another issue that cannot be brushed aisde is the perceived friction between Keshi and NFF. Keshi should realise that the NFF are his employers. Aminu Maigari is accessible. Green is also accessible, so I wonder where the friction is coming from. Keshi should respect the NFF and the NFF should also respect the Sports Minister. Respect is reciprocal. Keshi has succeeded based on the support he got from the NFF. Look at the game against Ethiopia, we were 10 minutes from losing when we scored two goals. That is the case of the hand of God. To succeed at the global stage, Keshi must come down from his high horse by building his own capacity and there are many windows to do it. There are several FIFA coaching courses and internship coruses with top European clubs. But aside that, we need to have a technical backroom crew. Dr. John Oganwon, who was the first graduate to play for the Eagles, watched the Eagles match against Argentina with me and Fanny Amun and Shuaibu Amodu. Amun wrote a script of how Argentina would play and score their goals and it turned out that what he wrote down came to pass. I was now wondering why these guys were not helping Keshi as backroom staff but was told that Keshi said he did not want any help from any backroom staff. People had mindset before going to the World Cup. What was Keshi’s plan at the World Cup? Was it to win the trophy? If his plans were to win the World Cup or develop our team for the future, we would have said said yes, we tried. If he wanted to win the World Cup, he would have gone with Obafemi Martins, Ikechukwu Uche and Ogbuke Obasi because they are all match winners. I watched Obasi in action for his Schalke during my trip to Germany and saw how he laid the assist that led to the first goal and scored a beautiful goal, which made me call Keshi to ask if he was watching the game and taking note of Obasi’s contributions and he said yes. But I was shocked when these guys were not included in the team to Brazil for the World Cup. Obasi was hot this season. If Keshi wanted to develop and build for the future, he would have stuck with the team that won the Nations Cup. Players like Sunday Mba should have been taken to Brazil. How can one reconcile the fact that a player who was dropped by a club in Scotland, was taken to the World Cup. That was Reuben Gabriel. There are many things that are inexplicable. We should go beyond this notion that we have tried our best because we are blessed with talents ard should be doing better than what we did in Brazil. Keshi knows better and we demand improved results from him. But he has come out to say that he would never coach the Super Eagles again That is an unfortunate statement to make but it might just be good news for Nigeria. But Keshi must remember that this country has been good to him and he got so much from this country, from the corporate sponsors and business moguls and the generality of Nigerians. So for him to make such statement is just unfortunate. Even Delta State, where Keshi hails from has apprecia\ted his contributions to our sports development. The stadium in Asaba was named after him. Capacity building is key to success in sports. In Delta State, we regularly organise capacity training courses. About three weeks ago, we brough in a former assistant coach of Arsenal to Delta State to help train our coaches, referees and athletes. And the person making these things to happen is Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, who in 2007, sent a bill to the State House of Assembly for the establishment of the Delta State Sports Commision, peopled by sports technocrats. Our orientation is just sports and that is why we are where we are in sports in the country. If we are not winning, we are dominating or amongst the top contenders. That is the legacy of the Uduaghan administration and we got this far based on capacity buildibng. Which is what we are recommending to the N|FF leadership. In going forward, what practical steps should the NFF take? We should start planning on hiow we would reach the final of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, not the 1918 version in Russia. And the players that won the FIFA U-1‘7 World Cup in UAE in 2013 should form the bulk of the team. NFF should through their coaches monitor them well and we should go for a new coach, preferably a foreign coach because he does not have any afinity with anyone here. And the coach must not be in the mould of the Luis van Gaal of the world. All we need is a determined, hardwotrking and career-driven coach, who will deliver on the results that we earnestly dream of. well to me keshi has done well but still there is need for improvement. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/07/keshi-got-wrong-brazil-amaju/

MakurdiA – baby born in Makurdi on Thursday with four ear lobes and no genitals has died, a hospital official said. The baby was delivered by Mrs Mbanengen Emmanuel at about 5:30 p.m at Yima Hospital, located in International Market area, a suburb of Makurdi in Benue. The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. John Dzike, on Friday said that the baby died “few hours after delivery”. Dzike said the baby also had its intestines exposed at the lower part of the abdomen. According to him, it is the second time a baby with such type of complications was delivered at the hospital this year. He explained that the defect was caused by malformation during pregnancy. “This is a case of congenital malformation. Some women use un-prescribed drugs during pregnancy, that is why it is very important to attend ante-natal clinics, especially in the first 12 weeks. “Diseases like virus, chicken pox, and mumps which are viral, can cause congenital malformation,” Dzike explained. |
