Crime / Rapist Attacks Lagos Couples, Kills Pregnant Woman, Injures Kids by DAVECENA(m): 9:54am On Oct 22, 2016
There was unease at Oluwoye community in Ibeshe, Ikorodu area of Lagos on Friday after an assailant suspected to belong to a gang of rapists in the area, killed a 30-year-old pregnant woman Afusat Yusuf, and stabbed her husband, Kazeem Yusuf. The man is now in a coma.
Saturday PUNCH learnt that the rapist also inflicted injuries on the couple’s two kids – Rodiat and Opeyemi, aged six and five respectively.
It was gathered that the attacker had gained access to the couple’s apartment around 2am on Friday through the window and attempted to rape Afusat.
The woman’s husband, Kazeem, was said to be awake in the process and reportedly resisted the rapist, who resorted to hacking him and their two kids with a machete.
Not done, the suspect went to a neighbouring building and unleashed terror on another couple, 52-year-old Sunday Robert and his wife, whose name had yet to be ascertained. The suspect subsequently fled the area.
While Afusat died on the spot, Kazeem and the children were rushed to the Ikorodu General Hospital, where they are still receiving treatment.
The incident was reported at the Ipakodo Police Division.
A resident, who identified himself simply as Adisa, lamented the spate of attacks on residents of Ibeshe community and its environs, saying the government had not made significant moves to address the attacks.
He said, “There have been series of attacks by this gang of rapists on residents at different parts of Ibeshe. Several women have been raped and killed. Female children were also molested.
“Around 2am today (Friday), a member of the gang attacked two houses. In the first house, he hacked a pregnant woman, Afusat, to death and seriously injured her husband and their two children. He inflicted a cut on Rodiat’s ear and smashed an object on Opeyemi’s mouth. He also attacked a couple in another building. They have been taken to a hospital.
“Residents are moving out of the community because there is no solution in sight to these attacks. Those of us who do not have anywhere to run to are living in fear. The government has not come to our aid despite our outcry.”
A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of being hunted by the gang, said the community had petitioned the Lagos State Government without getting meaningful results.
He said, “We need the government’s help in Ibeshe. We have gone to the governor’s office to make complaints but there is no response yet. We also met with the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Community Affairs.
“We want the government to unmask the gang members and those who are using them. This community lacks security.”
Another resident, Dele Olayiwola, said, “A member of the gang, Badoo, who was arrested had been charged to a Magistrate’s Court in Surulere by the police without notifying us. How are we sure that the case will be diligently prosecuted when people who will testify in court were not informed?”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmos, said the command was already on the trail of the suspect, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, had directed the homicide section of the command to investigate the case.
She said, “The division received a distress call in the early hours of Friday that a family had been attacked by unknown men . The DPO of the Ipakodo divsion led a team to the area where the corpse of the victim was taken to a morgue. Her husband and their two kids, who were also attacked, were rushed to a hospital where they are undergoing treatment. One Sunday Robert was also injured in a separate building.”

There’ s a ton of evidence to support the assertion that one can never understand Nigerian politics or its politicians. So we introduce exhibit Z , the latest to join the growing pile of evidence .

The Benue State government recently commissioned a billboard donated to the Benue state ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment by a Lecturer in the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, College of Education Katsina-Ala .
Governor Samuel Ortom was represented by the acting Secretary to the State Government ( SSG) , Dr Bem Melladu at the commissioning of the billboard It still feels a little bit bizarre.

Nigeria continued their impressive rise in football after climbing to 60th in the latest FIFA Rankings, which were released by the world football body on Thursday.

The Super Eagles are also ranked 11th in Africa, after their 1-0 victory at home against Tanzania in September in an inconsequential Gabon 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier was followed by a 2-1 victory over Zambia in their opening Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers in Ndola on African champions Ivory Coast are first on the continent followed by Senegal.

Politics / Re: Confiscated Cows To Go For ‘stomach Infrastructure’ – Fayose by DAVECENA(m): 6:18am On Oct 21, 2016
This man really gets me giggling....... The Great slayer......
Politics / Confiscated Cows To Go For ‘stomach Infrastructure’ – Fayose by DAVECENA(m): 6:16am On Oct 21, 2016
Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has declared that any cow confiscated under the State Grazing Regulation Law will be slaughtered and shared to the people as part of the “Stomach Infrastructure” policy of his administration.
The governor who disclosed this on Thursday in Ado Ekiti during the inauguration of Ekiti Grazing Enforcement Marshals (EGEM) said herdsmen caught grazing their cattle beyond the 6.00 pm risks six months jail while their animals will be confiscated.
Fayose explained that the setting up of the EGEM force was a further step to nip the killing of innocent people and destruction of their means of livelihood by armed herdsmen in the bud.
The EGEM men thrilled the audience with their parade while local hunters also performed at the ceremony. Some of the marshals displayed placards some of which read “No To Terrorism By Herdsmen”, Fayose Is Working, Ekiti Is Moving”, among others.
Fayose who were an olive green long sleeve shirt with a camouflage fez cap to match explained that the marshals are not to carry arms and therefore would collaborate with security agencies empowered by law to carry arms to tackle armed cattle rearers.
He said: ”We have a right to life and to survive and holding things for our survival especially peasant farmers, whose means of livelihood are taken away by cattle feeding on their crops. If the gains of peasant farmers are taken away in a jiffy, that is condemnable.
“We will bring to a permanent end, the situation whereby some people take away the means of livelihood of others.
“On August 29, 2016, the Anti-Grazing Bill was passed by the House of Assembly and the bill was signed into law by me on August 30. Some people go as far as grazing in the night when farmers are no longer at their farms. “Any cattle found grazing after the time stipulated by the law will be confiscated by the government.Such cattle will be sold or killed on the spot and shared to people as part of our Stomach Infrastructure programme,” he said.
The governor had Wednesday last week personally stopped open grazing along Afao Road and supervised the “arrest” of a cow on his way to commissioning projects in Ikole Ekiti.
Fayose contended that 10, 000 cattle could not compensate for the life of the human being lost to a conflict between herdsmen and local farmers.
While frowning at cattle rustling by some people, Fayose added that the law was in the interest of cattle rearers too, as their operations would be streamlined.
The governor added that the phone numbers of the marshals would be made public and warned the marshals against going beyond their mandate.
“This is not an opportunity to harass or intimidate innocent people. You are to enforce the law and not to break it. Anybody found going beyond his bounds would be dealt with accordingly,” he stressed.
In her opening remarks, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Modupe Alade, said the law had helped in curbing incessant attacks on local farmers by herdsmen and feasting on crops by cattle.
The Chairman, Hunters Association, Ikole Local Government, Joseph Osasona, commended Fayose for the initiative.
Osasona recalled that it was the prompt intervention of the governor in Oke Ako-Ekiti early in the year when some armed herdsmen attacked the people, that sent a strong signal to lawbreakers to stay away from the state.
He noted that it was inhuman for anybody to jeopardise the lives and means of livelihood of others because he wants to rear cattle.

Politics / FG Misses School Feeding Take-off Target by DAVECENA(m): 6:03am On Oct 21, 2016
Primary schools throughout Nigeria resumed for the first term of the current school year shortly after the Sallah holidays in September 2016, with many Nigerians eager to see the commencement of school feeding involving 5.5 million pupils nationwide.
School feeding was one of the major programmes for which N500 billion was budgeted for 2016. Before the resumption of schools, the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, flanked by two All Progressive Congress (APC) governors had pronounced in Aso Rock, on June 9, 2016, that the food programme would commence on time. Then in July, Mrs. Abimbola Adesanmi, National Manager of the programme, had also repeated the same promise.
We expressed our skepticism regarding the take-off date of the programme for two reasons. First, we were almost certain that the funds might not be available to execute the Social Welfare Programme (SWP). We felt the 2016 budget was over-ambitious and most of the promises would not be fulfilled this year. Second, we raised questions about the choice of schools which would benefit, and the logistics of supplying those schools in remote areas on a daily basis.
Federal Government officials dismissed these legitimate concerns. In September, the Minister of Finance announced that N70 billion had been released to Mrs. Maryam Uwais, the wife of the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, who is in charge of the SWP. That was a mere 14 per cent of the entire year’s budget; there was no guarantee of more funds being received. That same September, the House of Representatives summoned Uwais wanting to know the details of SWP. She asked the House to give her more time.
By that time it required no rocket science intelligence to know that the SWP, and especially the school feeding component, were in trouble for the reasons we had earlier cautioned the Federal Government. As it is, October will end without food for the 5.5 million children. It may not effectively start before December 2016.
The Buhari administration, like other governments before it, is beginning to realise that good intentions are never enough to govern a country successfully. Good organisation based on sound homework and grassroots knowledge of Nigeria are the ingredients for success.
It is doubtful if any of the managers of this programme is familiar with rural life – which is where most of the 5.5 million pupils needing free food are located. It is impossible to manage well without adequate knowledge and funds availability.
We hope the Federal Government will learn from its blunders of this year and prepare for a more credible implementation of the entire SWP package, particularly the school feeding programme. It will be a major item to assess this regime.

Politics / Remembering Dele Giwa: 30 Years After His Assassination by DAVECENA(m): 10:26am On Oct 19, 2016
JUST LIKE YESTERDAY !!! EXACTLY 30 YEARS ago, This Top Journalist DELE GIWA was killed .
He was Bomb out of existence with LETTER BOMB on the 19-10 -1986. May his Soul REST IN PEACE Amen.
16 march 1947 to 19-10-1986

Dele Giwa (16 March 1947 – 19 October 1986) was a Nigerian journalist, editor and founder of Newswatch magazine.

Early life and career

Sumonu Oladele "Baines" Giwa was born on 16 March 1947 to a poor family working in the palace of Oba Adesoji Aderemi, the Ooni of Ife. He attended local Authority Modern School in Lagere, Ile-lfe. When his father moved to Oduduwa College, Ile-Ife as a laundry man, he gained admission to that school. Dele Giwa travelled to the USA for his higher education, earning a BA in English from Brooklyn College in 1977 and enrolled for a Graduate program at Fordham University. He worked with the New York Times as a news assistant for four years after which he relocated to Nigeria to work with Daily Times.

Dele Giwa and fellow journalists Ray Ekpu, Dan Agbese and Yakubu Mohammed founded Newswatch in 1984, and the first edition was distributed on 28 January 1985. A 1989 description of the magazine said it "changed the format of print journalism in Nigeria [and] introduced bold, investigative formats to news reporting in Nigeria". However, in the first few months of the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, who took power in August 1985, the magazine was shamelessly flattering. It printed his face on the cover four times and even criticised "anyone who attempted to make life unpleasant for Babangida". Later, the paper took a more hostile view of the Babangida regime.

Personal life

Giwa married an American nurse in 1974. His second marriage, to Florence Ita Giwa, lasted 10 months. He later married Olufunmilayo Olaniyan on 10 July 1984, and they were married until his death in 1986.[6] He was survived by his mother, wives and children.

Assassination

Dele Giwa was killed by a mail bomb in his Lagos home on 19 October 1986. The assassination occurred two days after he had been interviewed by State Security Service (SSS) officials. In an off-the-record interview with airport journalists, Lt. Col. A.K Togun, the Deputy Director of the State Security Service SSS had claimed that on 9 October Dele Giwa and Alex Ibru had organised a media parley for media executives and the newly created SSS. Togun claimed that it was at this meeting that the SSS and the media executives reached a secret censorship agreement. Under this agreement, the media was to report any story with potential to embarrass the government to the SSS before they tried to publish same.

Giwa had been invited by the SSS to their headquarters for the first time on 19 September 1986 after writing an article in which he described the newly introduced Second-Tier Foreign Exchange Market (SFEM) as "God's experiment" and suggested that if SFEM failed, the people would will stone their leaders in the streets. Giwa was interviewed and his statement taken by two SSS operatives. He was later taken to meet with Lt Col Togun, the deputy director of the agency in his office. Togun is reported to have told Giwa that he found nothing offensive in the story as Giwa had also stated in the same story that he was hopeful that Babangida seemed determined to make SFEM work.[11]

According to Giwa's neighbour and colleague, Ray Ekpu, on 16 October 1986, Giwa had been questioned over the telephone by Col Halilu Akilu of the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI) over an allegation that Dele had been heard speaking to some people about arms importation. SSS officials reportedly summoned Giwa to their headquarters again on 16 October 1986, and on the next day Ekpu accompanied him to the SSS headquarters for the interview. Lt. Col Togun accused Giwa and Newswatch of planning to write the "other side" of the story on Ebitu Ukiwe who was removed as Chief of the General staff, to General Babangida. The magazine had published a cover story titled, "Power Games: Ukiwe loses out", in its edition of 20 October which was on sale on 13 October 1986. Togun also accused Giwa plotting with the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and students to carry out a socialist revolution. Giwa was also accused of saying that Newswatch would employ the suspended police public relations officer Alozie Ogugbuaja. Ogugbuaja claims that on 16 October 1986, a bomb was defused by the police bomb squad at his official residence in GRA, Ikeja, Lagos. Ogugbuaja also said that he suspected that his phone might have been bugged because Giwa and Ray Ekpu in one of their telephone conversations with him had indeed promised to employ him in Newswatch if the police dismissed him. Ray Ekpu also believed that their houses and phones may have been bugged because he did discuss employing Ogugbuaja in Newswatch with dele Giwa over the phone only; he said that he found two bugging devices in the cover of two books inside his study. Lt. Col. Togun while questioning Giwa had claimed that he wasn't aware of the fact that Akilu had already questioned Giwa over the gun running allegations the day before, this was after Giwa had brought it to his attention.

Giwa reported the interrogations to his friend Prince Tony Momoh who was then the Minister of Communications, Giwa had told Momoh that he feared for his life because of the weight of the accusations levelled against him. According to Ekpu, Momoh "dismissed it as a joke and said the security men just wanted to rattle him"; Momoh promised to look into the matter. On 18 October Giwa also spoke to Admiral Augustus Aikhomu, the Chief of General Staff who said he was familiar with the matter and also promised to look into it.

Later on 18 October, a day before the bombing, a staff of the DMI had phoned Giwa's house and asked for his office phone number from his wife Funmi. This same person from the DMI later called back to say he couldn't reach Giwa at the office and then put Col Akilu on the line. Ekpu alleges that Akilu asked Giwa's wife for driving directions to the house and when she asked him why he needed the directions he explained that he wanted to stop by the house on his way to Kano and he wasn't very familiar with Ikeja, he also offered that the President's ADC had something for Giwa, probably an invitation. According to Ekpu this didn't come as a surprise because Giwa had received advance copies of some of the President's speeches in the past through Akilu.

On 19 October, Giwa phoned Akilu to ask why he had been calling his house the previous day, Akilu was alleged to have explained that he only wanted to tell Giwa that the matter had been resolved. Ekpu says Giwa replied Akilu that it wasn't over and that he had already informed his lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi to follow up on the matter. Akilu then told Giwa that there was no need for that, that it wasn't a matter for lawyers and that he should consider the matter resolved.

About 40 minutes after the telephone conversation with Akilu, a package was delivered to Giwa's guard (the accounts of which vehicle was used to deliver the package vary). When Giwa received the package, he was with Kayode Soyinka (London Bureau Chief of Newswatch). The package exploded, mortally wounded Giwa and temporarily deafening Soyinka, who had excused himself to the rest room shortly before Giwa was supposed to have attempted opening the package. Giwa was rushed to the hospital where he eventually died from his wounds.

Pets / 'oldest' Panda In Captivity Jia Jia Dies At The Age Of 38 - BBC ... by DAVECENA(m): 11:14am On Oct 17, 2016
A giant panda believed to have been the oldest ever kept in captivity has died at the age of 38, officials say.

The death of Jia Jia, whose age in human terms was more than 100 years, was announced by the Hong Kong theme park where she lived.
Her condition had worsened rapidly in recent weeks and she had lost her appetite, the park said.
She was put down by vets at Ocean Park, her home since 1999.
"She was a member of our family and she will be deeply missed... she has served as an important animal ambassador for her species," the park said in a statement.
The park said that in the last two weeks, Jia Jia's daily food intake had dropped from over 10kg to less than 3kg per day, and she had lost weight.
"Over the past few days, she has been spending less time awake and showing no interest in food or fluids.

"Her condition became worse this morning. Jia Jia was not able to walk about without difficulties and spent the day laying down."
Vets took the decision to put the giant panda down to prevent suffering, the park said.
In a statement obtained by BBC Chinese, a Hong Kong government spokesman thanked the park for providing Jia Jia with care and support and added that it was "saddened" by the news.

The park in Hong Kong held a high-profile celebration for Jia Jia's 37th birthday at her enclosure in July 2015.

Born in 1978 in the wild in Sichuan, China, Jia Jia was given to Hong Kong in 1999 to mark the semi-autonomous city's handover by Britain two years earlier.

Family / Billionaire Is Offering $180,000,000 To Any Man Willing To Marry His Daughter by DAVECENA(m): 2:31pm On Oct 16, 2016
Most parents dream of what they want their child to be like and the kind of adult they want them to grow into. They try and mould you into the person they want you to become by teaching you and guiding you as you grow, giving you the proper foundations.
Cecil Chao, billionaire and owner of Cheuk Nang Holdings Ltd., is trying to change his already grown daughter. She has been in a lesbian civil partnership for a decade with her partner Sean Eav. Her father made headlines when he offered $60 million HKD for a man to convince his daughter to marry them.
He said in an interview ‘I don’t want to interfere with my daughter’s private life. I only hope for her to have a good marriage and children as well as inherit my business’. He also said he believes that it is not too late to change to her sexuality.

Gigi has written a letter to her father in response to him doubling the dowry he had originally offered. Her letter has been published in a few Hong Kong newspapers.

‘Since Dad thinks it’s so easy for me to switch from gay to straight, I should just leave it for him to demonstrate. I think I’ll marry a man when he marries a man’ she wrote. She understands that her preference may be difficult for him to understand and understands his response. However it doesn’t look like she’s going to be changing herself for her father. ‘I’m sorry to mislead you to think I was only in a lesbian relationship because there was a shortage of good, suitable men in Hong Kong,’ she wrote. ‘There are plenty of good men, they are just not for me.’

Politics / Focalization Of Campus Politics by DAVECENA(m): 9:47am On Oct 15, 2016
Politics can be defined as the art or science of government or governing, especially the governing of a political entity, such as a nation, and the administration and control of its internal and external affairs. In other words,it is an activity aimed at improving someone's status or increasing power within an organisation.
A renowned scholar Haroldz Dwight Lasswell defined politics as "who gets what, when and how",this indicates that the nature of politics is about the distribution of power in a society.
Politics however encompasses the various processes through which government or school authority responds to pressure from larger society in particular by allocating benefits, rewards or penalties.

Personal research has proven that 6 in 10 persons on campus have reservations about campus politics and if given the opportunity will term it a "MISS".But we must come to understand that it is a force that will continue to play its role in shaping our future, profession, life etc.whether we desire it or not.

Most interestingly,I'll like to have us take a look at the major cause of this lack of enthusiasm in politics to helping us lose hold of the powerful grip of the "Miss" syndrome. The notable term for this insensitivity on and off campus is known as Political Apathy, which is the indifference on the part of citizens of any country with regard to their attitude towards political activities.
The percentage of political enthusiasts is gradually reducing as we lose grounds to the "politics is a dirty game" advocates.

Although we view politics as a "Dirty game" and probably not for the calm ladies and gents, but it is viewed so because we have allowed our apathy to give in to the supposed corrupt personalities who dominate politics and take decisions which affects our well-being positively or negatively without generating reactions from the students.
Thus, if I was incurious about politics, the very activity through which my student association, school can
respond to my needs and pressure, then I cannot complain when the body doesn't meet my needs or hearken to my pressure. If I disengage myself from politics, then I'm throwing away my powers to decide how benefits, rewards and penalties which aren't far fetched are allocated. We must also remember that whenever a man cast his eyes on an office, rottenness obviously sets in.

In conclusion, Having made my point,I urge readers to be a part of the campus politics enthusiasts by being politically conscious.
Remember, indecision is a decision itself. Make a conscious choice that politics is not for a selected few and should never be treated with Hit or Miss affair.
It is a necessity and Quintessential.
