Under-Age Marriage: A Chronic Disease Up-North

The bride is an under-aged girl who should be enjoying her prime by going to school, "gossiping" while coming back from Islamiya, sharing dreams and fantasies etc...but she is now on a forceful journey to the "OTHER ROOM" where her fate was probably sealed from birth. Her dreams of becoming the first female medical doctor in her village is thwarted, she is a commodity that can be sold at any time, she has no voice, the society tells her who she is and not what God made her to be, Religion reinforces that myth, thus! She has to marry Mr Usman at 13years to fulfill Pseudo-Religious fallacy and man's immoral desires.
First child, Second child, Mr Usman can barely place food on the table, he beats her at every slightest provocation, she is tired, she is wounded, her soul yearn for freedom, but she cannot go back to the people that sold her into slavery. She is eternally condemned a house-slave. Mr Usman on the other hand has gotten a gift from Alhaji Politician after the last election, instead of sending Abdul and Aisha to school, his next move is to marry another wife (after all Religion expects him to marry at least 4).
The family becomes a refugee camp. Hunger, disease, illiteracy etc becomes synonymous to the family name. Abdul has no option but to become the man of the house at a tender age by engaging in hard labour. Aisha has to start buying cloths and jewelries from her Kunu business in preparation for marriage because that's what Mama and Baba wants...hmmm
Elections are over, no more political gifts, Mr Usman is getting tired of life, Alhaji Politician doesn't allow him near his gate nor the compound, Usman has no viable business or investment to fall back to. His Goro business collapsed because he was busy shouting "Sai Baba! Chanji!". His only consolation now is the " OTHER ROOM"...hmmm

Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abubakar, has said the agitation for the restructuring of the country is not sacrosanct.

Abubakar spoke with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday after inaugurating his five-point health agenda called “Lafiya Garkuwa”.
The governor was asked to give his opinion on whether restructuring would solve many of the problems currently plaguing Nigeria.

He said, “One of the problems of Nigeria is that the elites choose to pick on certain terms and they latch on to them and keep on repeating them. One of such terms is restructuring. You see, one of the most beautiful systems of governance is constitutional democracy, particularity the type with a written constitution being operated by Nigeria.

“All the parameters have been stated therein. So, if you need to do any adjustment, you can do that adjustment within the same constitution.

“I am certain that all those people agitating for the restructuring of Nigeria, if the amendment of the constitution that is being attempted now would look at the exclusive legislative list contained in the constitution and do a little adjustment of that list, it would serve all these agitations for restructuring.

“So, there is nothing sacrosanct about the word restructuring; we have a constitutional democracy, we have a scheme provided by that constitution for the amendment of the constitution itself. And thank God, as we are talking, there are efforts now in place by the two chambers of the National Assembly to amend the constitution.

“I think what Nigerians should be agitating for is to ensure that this attempt looks at the exclusive legislative list with a view to releasing those functions that are co-state functions such as the areas of population. For example, agriculture happens in the states only. The Federal Government has no land where they would do agriculture. So, if you tinker with the exclusive legislative list, I think it will satisfy the agitation for restructuring.”

The PUNCH reports that a former Vice-Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University and member of the Northern Elders Forum, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, had said the component units of the federation should find it convenient to go their separate ways if Nigerians found it difficult to live together.

Eighty-five-year-old grandmother, Mrs. Bolaji Isaac, says anytime she dies, she will be going to the grave with sorrow and bitterness.

Bolaji told PUNCH Metro that she had nothing to live for and preferred death because all her five children rejected her and efforts to see them had been abortive.
The Ikare, Ondo State indigene, said an apartment rented for her by a Pentecostal church in Lagos, Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, had been forcefully taken by her second son, identified as Sola, who chased her out.

The octogenarian told our correspondents that she was in dire need of another accommodation, appealing to Nigerians to prevail on her children to meet with her before her death.

She said, “I had 10 children. While five of them died, five survived. My husband died about 20 years ago and I started selling paper bags to hospitals and clinics. When I didn’t have money to continue the work, I stopped.

“I was formerly living in the Alagbado area of Lagos State, but my son, Sola, chased me out. He came from Ondo State to live with me.

“His wife called me that I should send him back, but I ignored her. Later, I agreed when the pressure became too much. When I asked him to return, he refused and started fighting me.”

She added that anytime she called her fourth child, Samuel, a lawyer, he always gave excuses of being in court, promising to call back, without doing so.

Bolaji, who explained that Samuel prevented her from knowing his address, said other children also gave excuses instead of catering to her.

When our correspondent asked about her siblings, she lamented that they had equally forsaken her.

“When I had money, my mother advised me to take care of them that they would help my children in the future. I sponsored their education, but now, they don’t care about me. I don’t know what I did to deserve the treatment. I want to die. This suffering is unbearable,” she added, as she burst into tears.

Bolaji told PUNCH Metro that she later moved to the Ladipo area of Oshodi where an old friend, Mrs. Sadatu Ahmed, had been sheltering her for the past eight months.

Our correspondent learnt that Bolaji survived on a weekly N2,000 stipend she received from the MFM every Monday.

Her friend, Ahmed, who claimed to have known her for 25 years, said Bolaji used to visit her during their youthful days.

The 52-year-old added that she could not send her away when she came to her house.

“She was sleeping in the verandah of our compound, exposing herself to cold and mosquito bites. When I couldn’t bear it, I begged my son to allow us to accommodate her and he agreed.

“She cannot go to toilet on her own and she does not sleep well. I bathe her and keep vigils over her. She cries every day. She complains of pains in her legs, stomachs and other body parts. She is really suffering.

“Anytime I call any of her children, they do not pick the call. When they do, they are quick in cutting off the call. One said he was a family man and if he had to choose between his mother and wife, he would choose his wife.

“I am being forced to send her out of my house. My neighbours said if she died, I would be in trouble. I don’t want to go to jail for helping someone in need,” she added.

However, Samuel, on the telephone, said his mother was troublesome, adding that he kept her away from his family to avoid having issues with his marriage.

He said, “She was formerly living with my elder brother, Tope. She was always quarrelling with his wife to the extent that they would engage in fisticuffs. And it was regular. I witnessed the fights while I was in the university and that was why I decided never to allow any family member live with me.

“She cannot live with any of her sons without having issues with their wives, so we are trying to make enquiries about old people’s home for her because that is the next step. Just last week, we all contributed N25,000 to give her; so I wonder where the issue of neglect is coming from.

“My wife and I are too busy and if she stays with us, she will still complain of neglect. It is not important that she knows where I stay; the most important thing is that she is taken care of.”

Samuel, who confirmed that Sola stayed with the mother at a time, said he could not say if he sent her out.

He said although he didn’t know who she stayed with in Lagos, he sometime sent her money through his wife.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), her urged the National Assembly to urgently pass the pending Proceeds of Crime and Whistle-blower bills to enhance the fight against corruption.

The Special Adviser to the AGF on Media and Publicity, Mr. Salihu Isah, said in a statement on Wednesday that Malami made the plea when he appeared on a live programme on the Nigerian Television Authority in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to Isah, the NTA programme was designed to focus on the whistle-blowing policy of the Federal Government.

While responding to a question on the live programme, Malami was said to have appealed to the National Assembly “to expedite action towards the passage of the bills as that will engender increased citizen participation in the anti-graft war and whistle– blowing activities.”

Malami was said to have stressed that the law would carry more weight than the policy statement currently in force.

He expressed dissatisfaction over the long stay of the Proceeds of Crime and Whistle-blower bills before the National Assembly, explaining that if passed by the legislature, the laws would have provided a legal backing to the Federal Government’s whistle-blowing policy.

He added, “So far, the only safeguard for whistle-blowers rests on the political will.

“The agencies involved in prosecuting the anti-graft war are keying into the understanding of protecting whistle-blowers.”

He noted that Nigerians were beginning to appreciate the public interest in the process, noting that it had got to a level where close relations were now blowing the whistle on their allies.

“The policy is being accommodated wholeheartedly by Nigerians,” the minister said.

Malami pointed out that Nigeria participated in the last year’s London summit on anti-corruption war and had joined the Open Government Partnership to enhance the fight against corruption.

He said the Federal Government had demonstrated the political goodwill “aimed at exposing corruption and mismanagement of public resources.”

Responding to another question, the minister explained that whistle-blowers could report allegations with criminal elements to his office or such information could be routed through other anti-graft agencies.

He added that the Federal Ministry of Justice was collaborating with other anti-graft agencies to ensure that justice was done to the report and the reporter.

The minister equally said that the federal ministries of justice and finance were working on a document to eliminate the bottlenecks associated with reporting criminalities and administrative ills.

He said, “The single deed document is being developed to save whistle-blowers of the tripartite process of reporting criminalities and administrative ills.”

Sir I wish to draw your attention to the new dangerous twist to the unfortunate sickness of President Muhammadu Buhari being falsely perpetrated in our mosques which has the tendency to create serious anarchy in Katsina state.

Today Friday 24 February, 2016 at the Izala mosque, popularly called General Tsiga mosque on Katsina road in Funtua local government, the Imam, during the jumuat sermon, apologized to the congregation for coming late. This, according to him, was because he was just out of a state meeting of the Izala sect in Katsina where they were accordingly informed and directed to inform all Muslims that the sickness of President Buhari was as a result of poisoning. According to the Imam, malam Nasir Abdurrahman, Buhari was poisoned by those close to him because he has amassed over N70 trillion and they want to steal it. To steal it they must kill him and that was why they poisoned him. This to him could be explained better by the sudden stoppage of Kano-Katsina dual carriage way which work stopped since the president became sick. Malam Nasir continued by asserting that the same way Tafawa Balewa was killed was the same way Murtala Mohammed was killed and is the same way they want to kill President Buhari.

Enough is enough according to him as we are not going to accept that. This is the summary of the message he was directed to convey. I don’t know if it was the same in all other Izala mosques across the state, but even if it was not I am scared of what will happen if we allow this lie and hate speech in our mosques to go unchecked.

Funtua is a hotbed of radicalism and has always been the boiling center of religious crises in the state. In 2011 after the presidential elections that then GMB lost to Jonathan, innocent Christian lives were lost and properties worth hundred of millions were lost. All because of this kind of misleading sermons by our half literate imams. I had to confront General Buhari on this and sought for his participation in my effort at compensating the Christians who suffered loses as a result of that post election uprising. He did not come but we still went ahead to compensate them in our own small way.

Now we are about to tread the same path all over again! If Buhari dies today, may Allah do what is right for him and us, what do you think will happen? Innocent lives will be made sacrificial lambs of this loss more so if we consider the fact that, Prof Osinbajo, a Christian being the VP is the constitutional beneficiary of whatever outcome from this debacle. Are we going to allow this to happen. I think people of conscience owe it a duty not to be silent in the face of this madness. Malam Nasir should tell us who poisoned President Buhari so that the law should take its natural course if he fails to do that he should be arrested and prosecuted for incitement.

How can somebody who has amassed N70 trillion want to borrow N17 trillion for which the National Assembly is yet to grant him that approval? Who is the fool here? They have lied to us in 2015 telling us that Buhari is superior to God and now that he is discovered to be human they want to make him God all over again! No way!

They have never shown us love, care or concern under this regime for all the hardship wrought on the common man and they now want to lead innocent souls to death and destruction. We will not allow that. We have been misled far too much for far too long and it is time to expose these people for what they are, cheats and liers that think we are dumb.

If you do the right thing to nip this in the bud fine; if you do not, let it be on record that I have reported to you my fears.

Wow! This is absolutely the best factual article I have read so far in the argument between Private and Public universities in Nigeria. Sometimes I feel like is a shame for First and Second generational universities like UI, OAU, UNIBEN, UNILORIN etc to be fighting with barely 15years old private universities for excellence.
As a product of both public and private institutions, i can authoritatively say that everything boils down to the students. If you wanna do great, whether UI or CU you can do it.
Be that as it may, we cannot rule out the importance of Quality Lecturers and Conducive Learning Environment to a student's academic performance.

Some elders in Rivers state under the aegis of Rivers Elders Consultative Council have condemned the minister of transport, Chubuike Amaechi for what they say are his ‘’divisive tendencies.’’

The elders were reacting to a meeting of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state organised by Amaechi during the visit of Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday, February 14.

In a statement signed by the executive secretary of the council, Chief Granville Abiye Georgewill, the elders expressed dismay that the acting president could be deceived to attending an APC function arranged by Amaechi.

"Even though party slogans were chanted at the meeting, there are two things Amaechi would have set out to achieved.
It may be that he wanted the acting president to have an impression that there exists an APC in the state and therefore paid all sorts of persons, some were made to dress in chieftaincy regalia when they are not, just to make the crowd appreciable to the visiting acting president.
“The other reason may be that Amaechi intended to clear the shame he would have received at the airport when he did not receive the courtesies he perhaps expected from the people of the state,” part of the the statement read.
The council opined that it was disrespectful to the government and people of Rivers state for Amaechi to organise another so-called stakeholders’ meeting 24 hours after a properly attended reception, stakeholders’ meeting and banquet was organised by the government in honour of the visiting Acting President.
They warned that they would not tolerate any person or group of persons attempting to cause disaffection, division and hatred and called for unity of purpose, cooperation and understanding so as to advance the cause of development in Rivers state.

Governor Wike had earlier condemned the action of the minister, accusing him of playing anti-Rivers politics.

I disagree, the US has a SC veto but not a signatory to the Rome statute, SC is more powerful than the ICC and covers global jurisdiction, why would a country have the right to stay or leave the ICC when the SC can hand down any sanction they deem necessary to any country?
The US said they have strong institutions reason they don't need the ICC, but what about weak institutions protected by the US by virtue of their SC veto example Bahrain? I think the way it should play out is this; the SC should have its own court where your summon should be decided by the super powers as it were.

Well said. The major problem is the Veto Powers and if allowed to prosecute crimes of concern to the international community as you postulated, interests will always overshadow reasons and the world would have been drawn back to 19th century. The solution to me, is for UN General Assembly to checkmate the SC or rather pressure her to refer cases like Syria, and individuals like Tony Blair and Bush to the ICC.

Hello guys, please I need your candid advice. After NYSC, my parents wanted me to look for a job that wasn't forth coming. So I decided to go for postgraduate study which is all I wanted after all. But this did not go down well with my intended sponsors. After much of convincing, they agreed to pay my tuition but the DEAL is I will take care of myself throughout my stay in school.

Wow! This is good! The ICC was established on the principle of complementarity, i.e to assist national judicial systems. But in a situation where national courts are incapable and unwilling to prosecute crimes of concern to the international community (War crimes, Crimes against humanity, genocide and Crime of Aggression), the ICC can step in. African judicial systems have shawn this incapacity and unwillingness, therefore necessitating the incoming of the ICC. Western courts on the other hand, have been able to prosecute individuals found guilty of war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and crimes of aggression.
There is also the principle of jurisdiction and gravity. Most of the crimes outside Africa (e.g Syria) are not under the jurisdiction of the ICC as Syria is not a state party to the Rome Status. However, the Security Council can refer such case to the ICC just like they did with Sudan and Libya. But they remain adamant mostly because of veto powers interests in the Middle East. So the accusation of bias should be channeled to the SC and not the ICC.
The argument therefore, that the ICC is a neocolonial tool in the hands of the Western Powers is irrational and pseudointellectual. African leaders are very despotic and prone to committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, therefore their hatred for the global Court. AU's position on the other hand is a safe face adventure to divert attention from the material to the immaterial.

GREED AND THE IGBO MAN: The Prospect of Life in an Independent Biafra.

In September 2010, I began my first journey into the Eastlands. I was happy for exploring a part of Nigeria but was afraid too for venturing into the "lions den". Yes! Lions den, because that was Onitsha especially counting years backward. The tick forest, green grass and fresh air was just WOW as we descended the slope of 9th Mile. Then I saw pretty fair ladies/girls rushing to our bus shouting gala gala, lacasera, lacasera, hmmm...I thought: these beautiful girls are hawking? Where I come from they are " big girls" looking for the next aristo. I remember telling a co commuter that "I love the business prowess of the Igbo nation". But....
As we drive into Onitsha around 8pm, everywhere looked like a war zone, everyone was in a haste, I became more inquisitive, and they said there is a curfew by 8pm because of rampant crimes ranging from killings, robbery, kidnappings etc: then my fear increased to 70%.

Now here is the main reason for this long epistle:
The Igbo man is naturally hardworking, business oriented, independent, intelligent, diplomatic there by making the Igbo Nation economically viable. But...
My experience that night while boarding a bus from Opi Iweka to Madonna(Okija) confirmed the stereotype that the Igbo man is Greedy, Exploitative, Over-Ambitious, Naive and can go any length to make money irrespective of humanity or moral standard. Some even said " The Igbo man is the number one enemy of his brother". Now this was what happened that night:
There came two old women begging the driver to accept their less transport fees, but the he refused. They rushed to the other bus, same fate. They rushed to another again, same fate. They now returned to the first bus and started pleading earnestly. To my surprise the conductors threw their bags out and maltreated these women. Nobody could bail them out. An act that is rampant and normal UP-NORTH: home of hospitality.
I recalled this incidence because of what I just read online about the current exploitation of Igbo commuters by Igbo transport companies. Onitsha to Lagos 13,000-15000. People had to donates for one particular man to pay for his four children (13k each) after he cried before the manager who refused to heed to his tears. So I begin to wonder how an independent BIAFRA will fare. One Igbo guy said "Biafra will be a hell for the poor...they will roast us with high prices of everything". As hard as it is, I think he is right.
Life is expensive in the East mostly because of " Igbotic Greed". There is high distrust among the Igbo Nation, and until they fight that, my lovely BIAFRA will forever be a mirage. #Peace #GiveusBiafraorwedie #Reality

This are not petty procedural issues... the investigation is faulty and cannot be relied upon to indict anybody. You failed to invite the parties involved to even question them and know the extent to which they are culpable by laying the facts of your case before them yet you quickly label them corrupt afterwards. I personally don't have favorable disposition towards that babachair guy but it doesn't mean such poorly investigated case should be used in nailing his coffin. I have always told people who cared to listen that by failing to invite him to their public hearing they succeeded in wasting their time.

Did you even read where Sen. Shehu Sani explained how they invited the accused and even went a step further to publishing the invites on five dailies? It's either you are objectively selective to suit your sentiment or you are one these Nairaland boys that doesn't read in between the lines...Pathetic!

It is unfortunate that agencies that are suppose to enforce the law are the ones breaking the law. Both the DG SSS and the lawyers are guilty in one way or the other.

OIL or AGRICULTURE: Where the Northern Elites Got it Wrong
It was depressing and pathetic the day I read the news that PMB had directed the search for oil in the North. And I thought "what a misplaced priority"!
The global fall in the price of oil and the unfortunate hunger in Nigeria caused by recession should have been an opportunity for the North to explore her comparative advantage in agriculture which is very much needed now than ever. Instead the President is wasting human and capital resources in search of depleting natural resource-Oil.
I know Mr President may not understand the principle of Comparative Adavantage as regards Nation-Building in Multi-Ethnic and Federal System like Nigeria, but what are those bunch of Ministers and Advisers telling this Old Man? Perhaps it is the "Northern Agenda" playing out: a situation where after successful oil exploration in the North, they will unleash their Universal Jihad Agenda on the rest of the country?
Well, focusing on agriculture at this critical moment would have been better for the North. A facebook user captures it much better:
"We are now in an age where, with visionary leadership, the north could for once rise up to her potential to feed Nigeria, feed Africa, and become one of the world’s frontiers of mega-industrial agriculture.
