Officers of the Nigeria Customs Service have been accused of shooting and killing a 15-year-old girl identified as Miss Sekinat Agbelade, while chasing a rice smuggler in Agosasa community in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Agbelade who died at a private hospital in the community on Saturday March 28, was running an errand before being hit by the stray bullet from the men of Customs Service.

Ogun state Police spokesperson, Abdulahi Maiwada confirmed the incident but said he doesn’t have the facts.

Lagos State Ministry of Health early hour on Friday confirmed the first case of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Nigeria.

According to the state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, in a statement around 1.40 am on Friday said the government had reported it to the Federal Ministry of Health.

The Commissioner said: “The case, which was confirmed on the 27th of February 2020, is the first case to be reported in Nigeria since the outbreak in China in January 2020.

The case is an Italian citizen who entered Nigeria on the 25th of February from Milan, Italy, for a brief business visit.

“He fell ill on the 26th February and was transferred to Lagos State Biosecurity Facilities for isolation and testing. COVID-19 infection was confirmed by the Virology Laboratory of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, part of the Laboratory Network of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. The patient is clinically stable, with no serious symptoms, and is being managed at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos,” the statement read partly

Major airlines have suspended some flights to China because of the coronavirus outbreak which has killed more than 130 people in China and spread across the world.

Here are the airlines that have suspended flights:

LUFTHANSA

Germany’s Lufthansa said in a statement it is suspending its own, Swiss and Austrian Airlines flights to and from China until Feb. 9. The airline continues to fly to Hong Kong, but it will stop taking bookings for flights to mainland China until the end of next month.

AIR TANZANIA

Tanzania’s state-owned carrier said it will have to postpone its maiden flights to China due to concerns over the spread of a coronavirus. Air Tanzania had planned to begin charter flights to China next month.

AMERICAN AIRLINES

The largest U.S. carrier said it will in the period from Feb. 9 through March 27 suspend flights from Los Angeles to Beijing and Shanghai, citing sagging demand in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

Following Monday’s violence in some communities in Bokkos local government area of Plateau State, the State Governor, Simon Lalong has ordered the immediate arrest of all Ardos (Fulani community leaders) as well as community leaders from Bokkos, Riyom and Barkin Ladi local government areas.

Monday’s violence was a fall out from the Sunday night attack and killing of not less than 15 people from Kwatas community of Bokkos and at the time the situation was brought under control, many houses and worships centres were razed by the rampaging attackers.

A businessman, Mr David Ishaku, on Wednesday prayed a Customary Court in Nyanya, Abuja to grant him divorce from his estranged wife, Lucia, and her lover kicked him out of his house after he caught them.

Apple Inc.’s China-centric manufacturing base is at risk of disruption after the Lunar New Year holiday as the company’s partners confront the coronavirus outbreak that has gripped the country and caused more than 100 deaths.

Virtually all of the world’s iPhones are made in China, primarily by Foxconn’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. at its so-called iPhone City in Zhengzhou and by Pegatron Corp. at an assembly site near Shanghai.

Each of those locations is more than 500 kilometers away from Wuhan in central China, the epicenter of the viral outbreak, but that distance doesn’t immunize them from its effects.

“I can’t imagine a scenario where the supply chain isn’t disrupted,” said veteran industry analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy. “If there’s one major hiccup in the raw materials, fabrication, assembly, test, and shipping, it will be a disruption.”

United States (US) Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday he was “outraged” by another missile attack on an Iraqi airbase where US forces have been stationed, as neighbouring Iran signalled a wish to de-escalate tensions.

The car Tupac Shakur was in when he was shot dead has been put up for sale for $1.75m.

The legendary rapper was a passenger in a BMW 750 when he was gunned down in Las Vegas in 1996.

The shooting took place while Tupac Shakur was being driven by his friend and notorious record producer, Suge Knight after watching a boxing match at a casino.

It was claimed that before Tupac Shakur was killed, a white Cadillac pulled up alongside their BMW, before the assailant then carried out the shooting within seconds. Tupac Shakur, 25, at that time was struck in the chest, arm, and thigh. He died in hospital from his wounds six days later.

Operatives of the Operation Puff Adder of the Katsina State Police Command have killed two notorious kidnappers and rescued a 14-year-old female victim at Danmusa LGA of the state.

Spokesperon of the command, SP Isah Gambo, who confirmed the development in a statement on Thursday, said that the victim Lantana Haruna, was kidnapped 18 days ago at Tashar Mai Alewa village, Danmusa LGA.

The kidnappers identified as Gambo Balejo and Ali Dan Maishago were shot dead after a fierce battle in their hideout at Jigawar Sawai forest.

Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo, says his state is poor.

Akeredolu said this on Thursday at the launch of the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN) codenamed “Amotekun” (leopard), a joint security initiative by south-west governors.

Reacting to the absence of Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, at the event which held in Ibadan, Oyo state, Akeredolu said his Lagos counterpart wanted to fly into Oyo but could not do so because of the weather.

Akeredolu said he that is from a poor state had to travel down by road but because Lagos is rich, Sanwo-Olu opted to fly in.

“I must convey the apologies of two of our governors who are not here. What has happened is part of problems you face in harmattan period, particularly when you are from a rich state that you believe you can come with helicopter but helicopter now say that it cannot land,” Akeredolu said jokingly.

“But those of us who came by road, we arrived safely. You know Lagos is rich and they wanted to come by helicopter.

“Their vehicles came before them and they are here. So at times, it’s good to be poor. Ondo is a poor state and all of us are here now… but the two of them are part of this; let me assure all of us.”

Sanwo-Olu and Dapo Abiodun, governor of Ogun, are the only south-west governors that did not attend the event.

He said the governors in the region have grown worried over the consistent reports of killings and kidnappings in the zone, hence the need to initiate Amotekun.

“We cannot predict the exactitude of where these incidents will take place, hence we felt that combined efforts of all us will be very necessary. The current situation in the country requires pragmatic and proactive solutions. The south-west seems to be the centre of negative reports in recent times,” he said.

Akeredolu said Amotekun is only a complementary agency and not a replacement for the police, adding that they (south-west governors) do not plan to overstep their boundaries.

“Some of us cannot afford to break this country. I am married to an Igbo woman so what happens, where will my children go if we break this country. If they choose to follow their mother, what happens? We believe in Nigeria. Nigeria’s sovereignty is indissolvable,” he said.

“It will serve as an effective complement to the security measures put in place by the federal government. It is not our intention to erect any antagonistic structure. Amotekun is only one among the solutions to the socio-economic challenges we face in this region.

“Our initiative appears ambitious to a number of people and its operation looks opaque to the skeptics. We on our part are clear on the purpose and objectives we seek.

“This is not in any manner, a body which will operate as an alternative to the police force. Its role is mainly complementary.”

The governor said beyond the 120 vehicles procured by the states, they each have over a hundred motorcycles to be deployed in the operations.

He allayed fears that the group will serve as a form of state police, saying it will not be abused.

“No governor will use Amotekun for political activities,” he said.
