Programming / So You Want To Be A Programmer, Huh? Here Are 27 Ways To Learn Online by davidsmith8900: 6:20pm On Aug 25, 2014
Whether you are looking to switch careers and become a full-time programmer, want to try to build a website or app on the side, or are just looking to round out your skill set, learning to code has certainly been something a lot of people have started to do lately. And while being a programmer might not be for everyone, there is a lot to be said about gaining a better, more educated view of how all those pixels get moved around all those screens.

henryobinna: am yet to try it on phone, but I just did on my laptop but it didn't open

Please try it on your phone. On your laptop, u should be able to try:

1. https://0.facebook.com
2. https://m.facebook.com
3. https://www.facebook.com

henryobinna: ok, I'll try n see if it works, can it load javascript content? like will it load the desktop view of fb?

Most likely the mobile view unless you put it into a desktop site. What device are you using to access it? A Desktop/Laptop/Mobile?

Yeah, it probably wont work with games.

henryobinna: ok, I'll be waiting too

But do u know how to access Facebook Zero? Here is the link for that ~> https://0.facebook.com . Facebook Zero (is zero data charges but it is only text-based. Once you click on images/pictures, it is no longer free). Still, I think the op made a software that connects Facebook Zero to other websites or web apps so now if you don't have money to browse the internet or you dont have money for credits but you want to see whats going on the internet or you want to do a google search or you want the latest news, or you want to apply to a job in a different area or u want to come on Nairaland or you want to play games and you don't have the money, you can use the op's app, that connects Facebook Zero to these other websites or web apps for free, but it is all text-based.

I really dont know, but the op (@toshodei) said he/she got it. Let's wait till the op gets back online.

ITbomb: What is Facebook without seeing the faces.
Twitter can be managed with text only but Facebook? No!

Im thinking that what the op means is that if you HAVE MONEY and want to use facebook to see images and do the regular things, then go to regular www.facebook.com or m.facebook.com. However if u DON'T HAVE MONEY and u want to browse the internet, or get some info from the internet or see who is hiring or to play games or to download things, then u can do that for free by using the app/software which uses facebook zero (0.facebook.com). Like not everybody has enough money to access to the internet all the time.
Programming / From A Nairalander - Internet Zero (Free Internet From Facebook Zero) by davidsmith8900: 9:46am On Aug 25, 2014
A Nairalander (@toshodei) claims he/she has created/found a way to access free text-based only internet from facebook zero i.e. with zero data charges. He/she also claims that there is a twitter service as well called twitter zero, but he/she has made an app/software that can allow anyone to access the internet without zero data charges as long as they use facebook zero (i.e. 0.facebook.com). Here is the quote and below the quote is the link to the original post on Nairaland

"Ive come up with a way (software) to access the internet (Free Internet With Only Text Browsing, because images/pictures will cost data charges) through Facebook Zero (https://0.facebook.com). There is also 'Twitter Zero' according to this ~> http://techcrunch.com/2014/05/29/twitters-emerging-market-strategy-includes-its-own-version-of-a-facebook-zero-like-service-called-twitter-access/ . Still, my only problem is that I dont know what most Nigerians (or all Africans in general) use the internet for, since there is no data online concerned with this demographic. Do many use it for:

A. Communication/Sharing/Socializing?
B. Looking for Jobs?
C. Getting News or Information around the world?
D. Gaming?
E. Education?
F. Entertaiment, Movies & Videos?
G. Buying a product or Consumerism?
H. Something else?

So Im interested if people can give me a feedback on what they use the internet for, as well as how people feel about accessing free internet (With Only Text Browsing) through https://0.facebook.com or https://0.twitter.com . Thank You, Good Morning Everybody, Happy Monday & Have A Great Successful Week Ahead." ~ @toshodei (op from Nairaland)

The coders i know ar web devs (php hoodies). Googling i do see salary for ocjp, ocjm does produce som results same on linkedIn. Ppl ar gettg it though.
Tht's y i'm throwg d q here.
Oca(150)+ocjp(150)+books(200) = ~$500
ocjm = 900(traing)+~200(exam) =$1,100
these prices mayb too low. Last time I checked was last year.

. P.j deitel co-author of Java how to program is scjp.
Some book authors i use are also certified.

I'd like to know if java certs really really can make a light and day difference in one's to career.
Like certs can in other professions
(e.g ican /acca for accountants)
The one i'm thinkg of is ocjp.
I know it doesnt really test programming ability (ocjm does but it cost about $900 for compulsory traing) but it's a pre requisite to others.

If it's not, then what is d better way to boost a programming career short of enterprenuership.

Wat's d career flexibility of a programmer with java certs with one without it?

Pros:
- java certs dont expire
- internationally recognized

cons:
a waste of money if it dont bring in big bucks - salary wise.

- more expensive thn other certs, especially after oracle acquired sun.
In the time of sun corp, A programmer cud take scjp (now ocjp) without prerequisites and without payg d hefty traing fees.

- java, the lang mayb dying out.
Too much predctions tht scala, clojure is the way to go for jvm language.

I dont know about certifications, but Im really suspicious on the affect certifications and degrees have in our society, especially when most billionaires (software billionaires) that I know don't have a certification or degree.

https://0.facebook.com

Plz remember that is a 'zero' not a letter 'o'. Although I don't think it matters. Just open your browser and go to that site. It should work.

New Jersey-based Kirusa, a developer of Voice SMS based Mobile Value Added Services (MVAS) for emerging markets, has acquired Saya, a Ghana-based developer of mobile messaging apps for feature phones.

Often described as the ‘WhatsApp for feature phones’, Saya is a mobile messaging app that caters to high-growth mobile markets worldwide, bringing cheap mobile messaging to people who do not have Smartphones in emerging economies. Saya is particularly popular in West Africa for its real-time ‘Street Chat’ messaging application and its platform includes social network integration, location-based and group chat across multiple phone platforms such as J2ME, Android and iOS. It is used by feature phone users in over 35 countries worldwide, but its biggest user base is located in Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya.

Saya was founded in August 2011 by Ghanaian entrepreneurs Robert Lamptey and Badu Boahen, both graduates of the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) in Accra, where the company was incubated. MEST, which was founded by Norwegian-born Software entrepreneur Jorn Lyseggen, provides training, investment and mentoring for aspiring technology entrepreneurs in Africa. Saya’s investors include the Meltwater Foundation, Forward Partners and Progress Through Business.
