Facebook Zero - 0.facebook.com - Is accessing facebook without any data charges. Some people are here say they can access it, some aren't saying they can't. How many people can access it? |

cirmuell: I haven't used GC And i do most of my web surfing on mobile devices browser apps. But however, I'm sure most internet browsers like IE, MOZILA and even Opera Mini have a place to toggle this settings. ok. Thanks for telling. |

cirmuell: most browsers have a way to disable images or better still reduce the quality. Which you can toggle at will, I'm guessing your's is preset. Im using GC and I dont see a place whereby I can remove images or colors or even ads. What browser are you using and can you toggle yours? Also when you toggle it to show only text based, does it mean that your data will still be charged/used for downloading it to your browser but not showing it, or will you not be charged/used at all? |

cirmuell: Nice idea, but what's a wep page without image. Probably an email. I feel you but internet is expensive. If you want to go online to get info, then we might as well get info that we need. Not just a bunch of ads, here and there that take up our data usage. |

Here is another screenshot with just NL using text based browsing, but without formatting, images. Just plain text.

Programming / Y Don't Ppl Use Text Based Browsers 4 Saving Data/Money (My Research On NL)? by davidsmith8900: 11:04am On Aug 20, 2014 |
Im curious to know how many people use text based browsers and to know how many don't and why. I've created an app that filters unwanted ads, pictures, colorful text and I've been able to save 80-90% on data usage, which has led me to have my plan last longer and thus it saves me money. In my 1st pdf file below, I used text based browsing to surf NL Homepage and it used only 122kb. When I used the same NL Homepage on a regular browser (without text based browsing) like GC (Google Chrome), IE (Internet Explorer) or MF (Mozilla Firefox) I ended up using 259.2kb. Now that's just on the homepage, imagine what will happen as I continue to browse more sites. I also have screen shots below. The 2nd screenshot displays NL (without text based browsing) - this screenshot was about 333.1 kb. Compare that with the 1st screenshot which is NL (with text based browsing but formatted the same way) - the screenshot was only 184.6 kb. Now remember these are just screenshots, imagine what will happen if I really downloaded the source code. I suggest that we all use text based browsers in order to save money and data, or what do you think?

asalimpo: Exactly on point. @Asalimpo you are right on everything. Still but plz remember that everything needs to begin somewhere. I believe that is what Yanme is doing. They are starting with NL's user interface and are gradually getting better day by day. Adding features here and there as well as customizing their brand. |

asphalt8: What nairaland is a very good clone, and i am working very hard creating a very good clone. Am still strategizing on how to port over users en-masse from nairaland, i have several plans and i am going to try them one after the other. Exactly my point. The hard part is getting users from Nairaland. I wish you well, and that is from the heart. |
Programming / Re: Nairaland Has Multi-Billion Dollar Potential Startup Value If Taken Seriously by davidsmith8900: 11:05pm On Jul 31, 2014 |
asalimpo: If a clone of nairaland is made imitating nairaland,it will fail. So do you think YanMe will fail, since it is sought of like the clone of NL. Like Ugochukwu looks like he wants to be number 1. He is not laid back and playing. He is on his grind. His problem is getting ppl to use his product. |
Programming / Re: Nairaland Has Multi-Billion Dollar Potential Startup Value If Taken Seriously by davidsmith8900: 11:03pm On Jul 31, 2014 |
GodMode: But that is the easy part. The hard part is getting ppl to actually use the product. "Build it and they will come" theory no longer works, bcuz everybody is building. Its just like the balloon effect when building apps. |

ClintonNzedimma: So you dont think that Nairaland should add features? What if Nairaland had spinoff companies? |
Programming / Re: Nairaland Has Multi-Billion Dollar Potential Startup Value If Taken Seriously by davidsmith8900: 8:59pm On Jul 31, 2014 |
GodMode: You are wrong. I can put up a Nairaland clone within 3 hours but to get users is way way hard. Its a forum and like other forums its source code is easy to have and implement. I have Nairaland source code and everything on my Ubuntu laptop. The hard part is marketing and getting users to use it everyday. Nairaland has become an addiction. Making a website or web app into an addiction is not easy. Thats the hard part. 1 Like |

curiouslad: Nairaland is a startup company, and it is slacking like this? When competitors are coming left and right, and Nairaland is stagnate like a water in a pond? |
Programming / Re: Nairaland Has Multi-Billion Dollar Potential Startup Value If Taken Seriously by davidsmith8900: 8:55pm On Jul 31, 2014 |
Djtm: I totally agree. Yahoo killed yahoo because they were number one and didnt take search engines as serious as Google did. Same thing goes for Altavista. Back in the day, search engines weren't that known for making money. Even before VCs invested into search engines they laughed it. When Google wanted to sell it for $1 million dollars they were clowned made fun of. 1 Like |

GodMode: I feel and understand you, but don't people share information on Nairaland? Also look at your last statement, "IF A NIGERIAN CREATES SUCH PLATFORM (ESPECIALLY ON MOBILE) AND IT GETS POPULAR" <~ that right there says it all. 1st to create the app. 2nd to make it popular. The 1st part is easy, the 2nd part is really really really hard. More like a barrier to entry. |

curiouslad: Upgrade it to a startup company. So can't Nairaland copy and use Reddit's features as well? The only reason Reddit is better than Nairaland, is because Reddit is exposed more. Its like comparing Jay-Z to Dbanj. Kanye West to Wizkid. Nas to Davido. American & Nigerian rappers are both good and both are in a competitive market, but American rappers have more exposure than Nigerian rappers. Or how do you feel? |

SpaceGoat: okay. i will try bid 4 million dollars again next time when i dream the dream in my dream again . tank for advice Im not saying that. Personally, when you said that you wanted to buy Nairaland, I thought you mean when it first came out. Like when Nairaland was just a joke or rumor. Like if you have the money, then I see it as a great investment. But at the same time, you could use that 4 million dollars to create a Nairaland clone for about $100 and use the $3.9 million for marketing, getting programmers and adding features. Or how do you feel? |

ClintonNzedimma: Its what you guys think. What do you mean by Yahoo became a website of no description? Like I dont seem to understand that statement. Are you saying that Yahoo is irrevelant? Or that it fell off? I mean we all know Google took over the search engine from Yahoo, but I think because Yahoo wasn't stepping up their game. More like what might happen to Nairaland. Or how do you feel? |

Programming / Re: Nairaland Has Multi-Billion Dollar Potential Startup Value If Taken Seriously by davidsmith8900: 8:08pm On Jul 31, 2014 |
Personally I agree with the op. Think about it, when Nairaland went down, did u not notice how it affected the whole community? Some people lives were changed dramatically. Personally, I checked every hour, to see if the site was still down. Like Nairaland has become addictive and part of our daily lives and the funniest thing is that at a max I see about 7,000 people online (20% members + 80% guests). Like imagine what would happen if Nairaland really put their time into it. |
