UK‑based researcher calls for support for teachers’ welfare, splashes ₦1 M cash and 9 laptops to honour Ebonyi teachers





A United Kingdom-based lecturer and researcher, Dr. Obinna Otuu, has called on governments at all levels and Nigerians in general to pay more attention to the needs, welfare, and appreciation of teachers and the impact of those in the teaching profession.

Otuu, who operates a research hub known as *Bestob Education and Research*, called for the need to prioritize teachers’ welfare and improve learning facilities in the nation’s basic schools and universities.

Dr. Obinna Otuu, a lecturer at Swansea University, United Kingdom, made the call during a summit organized to celebrate teachers in the State, tagged *“Ebonyi Teachers First”* in Abakaliki.

Otuu noted that investing in teachers remains the best approach to achieving standardization in Nigeria’s educational system.

He expressed worry over the way teachers have not been receiving empowerment and adequate training for career growth, urging all hands to be on deck.

“Teachers need some of these basic needs to enhance their career and teaching – food, clothing, and shelter. How many teachers across states can boast of having a house or land?” the researcher asked.

He added that there is always a need to recognize teachers as the drivers and “brain boxes” of society. To honor this, his team splashed *₦1 million* as a gift to *Mrs. Alice Awaza*, the oldest teacher at the programme. She, who currently teaches at Ohofia Community Primary School, Ukawu, in Onicha LGA of Ebonyi, has served for 32 years. Awaza started her teaching career in 1992.

Our correspondent reports that nine other teachers from different primary and secondary schools each received an HP laptop to support their teaching.

Group urges Ebonyians to register for PVCs, support Governor Nwifuru’s Charter of Needs Agenda




A socio-political organization, MSL Support Group for FON 2027, has called on eligible voters in Ebonyi State especially those from Izzi, Abakaliki, and Ebonyi LGAs to seize the opportunity of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the upcoming general elections.


During a sensitization campaign held in Abakaliki, the National Coordinator of the group, Comrade Nkwede Linus, emphasized the critical importance of voter registration in deepening democratic participation and securing continued support for the People’s Charter of Needs agenda championed by Governor Francis Ogbonnaya Nwifuru.

"It is expected that all eligible voters should obtain their PVCs to allow them to participate fully in the upcoming general election in the country.

"It is a civic responsibility of every Nigerian to exercise their right during elections, and the only way is to obtain PVCs," said Linus.

He announced the group's commitment to intensifying grassroots mobilization across the state to combat voter apathy, particularly in the Izzi clan.

"Advocacy campaigns will target local government leaders, traditional rulers, and religious institutions to amplify the message of civic responsibility and political engagement.

The group also reaffirmed its unwavering support for Governor Nwifuru’s People’s Charter of Needs, a developmental blueprint aimed at transforming infrastructure, human capital, and the social landscape of the state.

Comrade Linus praised Engr. Mbam Stanley Lebechi, Ebonyi State Commissioner for Works and founder of the MSL Support Group, for his efforts in actualizing the Charter’s objectives through massive road construction and infrastructure upgrades.

"Engr. Mbam has repositioned the Ministry of Works into what could rightly be described as a construction company, effectively driving the Charter of Needs mantra of His Excellency, Governor Nwifuru,” Linus stated.

The group concluded its outreach with a strong call for all unregistered residents of voting age to take immediate action, register, and be ready to cast their votes in support of a developmental vision for Ebonyi State.

Ebonyi NAPPS Chair Alleges Cultists Infiltration in School Closure Task Force"




The Chairman of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Ebonyi State Chapter, Mr. Felix Nomeh, has accused the Ebonyi State Government of recruiting suspected cultists into the committee established to enforce the closure of illegal and substandard schools in Ezza North Local Government Area.

Nomeh, a member of the school closure task force, made the allegation during a press conference in Abakaliki, stating that some individuals on the committee have turned the exercise into a platform for intimidation and harassment.

According to Nomeh, the committee's primary objective is to identify and shut down illegal schools, but it has been infiltrated by questionable characters.

He claimed that some school proprietors and teachers were arrested during the enforcement process, but the teachers were only struggling to survive and did not deserve detention.

Nomeh alleged that the group's actions have gone beyond enforcement, with some individuals within the task force intimidating him since he questioned their methods.

He further stated that despite his attempt to report the matter to the appropriate authorities, the suspects were not handed over to the police as expected.



"One of the teenagers, a student, was arrested. And on the way, the Civil Defence leader came, and that one was also released,” he continued.
“So, I am appealing release these four persons. Four persons, only four persons. And that is why the cultists in the midst are threatening to kill me.”



"We went to the command, but unfortunately, they were not dropped there,”.

“I had thought of leaving the suspects there so that I could talk to OC Crack, who is in the position to arrest them. Because when I met the Honourable Commissioner for Education on this issue, he told me that where there is conflict, I should report directly to OC Crack.”

“So, as we went to the command, the suspects were not dropped there. We came back, and I was still waiting for them to release those five persons". He said.

However, the Commissioner for Primary Education in Ebonyi State, Dr. Illang Donatus, denied the allegations, describing them as "baseless and reckless."

Dr. Donatus challenged Nomeh to provide credible evidence linking the government or any of its committee members to cultism or face legal action.

“Let him produce evidence of the employment of any cultists in the committee, otherwise I will not hesitate to charge him to court,” the commissioner said.

Alleged sexual assault: sickle cell advocate withdraws petition against Ebonyi Bishop



A sickle cell advocate, Aisha Edwards Maduagwu has withdrew her petition before Ebonyi State police command against a popular bishop in the, Samuel Onyeagoziri Okorie who was accused by a sickle cell patient, Euphemia of sleeping with her for five years as the solution to her health condition.

The bishop has been in police custody since two weeks over the allegation.

Maduagwu who was angry over the allegation, petitioned the state Commissioner of Police, Adaku Uche-Anya and Governor Francis Nwifuru, calling for the cleric immediate prosecution.

But the sickle cell advocate has made a U-turn on the petition, citing insincerity, deceit and blackmail in the sexual scandal.

She alleged that the girl was being sponsored by a popular businessman and politician in the state and another cleric and that she was using sickle cell name to curry sympathy.

"As the National Coordinator of the Association of People Living with Sickle Cell Disorder, ( APLSCD ) with memberships of about 400 sickle cell persons, I am issuing this public statement to address my findings regarding the case between Bishop Sam Ndubueze Okorie and the Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD) person (Names withheld) who had alleged sexual abuse, among other things against the Bishop.

"After my investigations with the testimonies from different quarters tied to the case, I am withdrawing my initial report against the Bishop and providing clarity to promote understanding and healing. Below is a detailed account of my findings and conclusions.

"Firstly, Bishop Sam Ndubueze Okorie personally apologized to me in the presence of his lawyer and police officers at the Ebonyi State Police Headquarters on some past grievous encounters with him. I have accepted his apology, forgiven him, and wished him well.

"Consequently, I am formally withdrawing my initial report, believing this matter can be resolved amicably. I will state that as a sickle cell advocate for over a decades and still counting, I have fought for justice for vulnerable sickle cell persons on many occasions, and also championed the Anambra State Sickle Cell Disease ( Control and Eradication) Law, 2019, which I have also made written suggestions to the government authorities in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, to initiate same legislative procedures for the benefits of State.

"My investigation revealed that Bishop Sam Ndubueze entered into a consensual relationship with the SCD patient in 2022, after she was brought to him in 2021 by her father, mother, and sister. The sexual relationship with her was at the explicit approval of her father, who due to her being the only surviving SCD person in their family, was eager for offsprings from her, pressured the Bishop to impregnate her so he can still have grandchildren at his old age. This context according to common sense indicates the relationship was mutually agreed upon and not coercive.

"Since 2022, when their relationship began, the Bishop provided extensive support to the her, including purchasing a mini bus for her school runs, funding her educational pursuits through exam preparation tutorials (JUPEB Programme) placing her on a monthly salary from his church’s proceeds, appointing her as second-in-command cum Secretary in his ministry, and granting her decision-making authority.

" These efforts reflect his commitment to her well-being despite her health challenges. At some point, she suffered from chronic leg ulcer, and was taken to the hospital by Bishop Sam Ndubueze, where she was fully nursed back to health and the leg ulcer cured.

" Bishop Sam has at times donated blood to her when she needed transfusion. As a sickle cell person myself, and also managing the health of many others, I know the difficulties and challenges encountered to have people coming forward to donate blood in times of need.

"However, her significant influence over the Bishop’s life and ministry strained his family dynamics, with his wife and children requiring her approval for access to him. She also relocated from assigned staff quarters to the Bishop’s court, deepening her role in his personal and professional life.

"The patient was not a minor when they met and was already sexually active. She was 22 years old in 2021. Reports suggest she coerced the Bishop into certain behaviors, including introducing him to pornography to enhance his libido, often teasing him as an “old man” to perform better sexually. This also challenge the narrative of one-sided abuse and points to mutual participation.

"No evidence supports her claims that the Bishop threatened her with weapons like guns or knives, as alleged in a podcast interview. All sexual acts were consensual, and there were no threats to release her nudes publicly. Their practice of capturing nude photos on the Bishop’s phone during private moments was consensual, initiated by her suggestion that he view them to increase arousal and satisfy her desires.

"The Bishop's phone was stolen in his court on 1st September of which he reported the theft to the police on the 2nd. To his rude shock, their romantic pictures together started circulating after 19 days later, and he called her about the development of which she denied ever leaking the pictures to the public. When the Bishop was invited by the police, both he and she went to the station together with one accord, only for her to turn against him after meeting one man that identified himself as an Apostle who briefly spoke with her privately at the station.

"I want to use this opportunity to address a critical issue where podcasters, media outlets, and content creators rush one-sided narratives for the sake of gaining attention, clicks, or traffic, without seeking balanced perspectives from all parties involved. Responsible journalism and content creation requires due diligence in reaching out to all parties concerned to verify claims and provide a fuller picture", she said.

Philanthropic Group Pays N43.4m Hospital Bills for 72 Indigent Patients in Ebonyi"



A humanitarian organization, De Imperial Philanthropic Family (DIPF), has paid hospital bills totaling N43.4 million for 72 indigent patients at Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital (AE-FUTHA) in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

The group also gifted each patient N75,000 to ease their transportation back home.

The group set aside a whooping sum of half a billion naira towards addressing such challenges in the south east.

Speaking during the ceremony held at Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital (AE-FUTHA 2) In Abakaliki, the President of De Imperial Philanthropic Family (DIPF) Dr. Darlington Nwabunike said the organization is also intervening in scholarship to indigent students and is also building classrooms to advance conducive teaching and learning in some schools in south east.

Nwabunike noted the organization, founded in 2021 with over 200 members were made up of captain of industries, entrepreneurs and wealthy sons of South East extraction.

According to him, "De Imperial Philanthropic Family is a made up of Captains of industries, entrepreneurs and who is who in south east.

"We both came together for the purpose of saving livies, sending children to schools and lifting the poor from grass to grace.

"So we are directed by God to pay this visit to Ebonyi. So nobody invited us but Almighty God.

"When I saw the bills, for me it was heart broken but by the grace of God, we have come and we will conquer and won't stop.

"So with me here is the compiled list of patients. And we have about 72 patients and the total bill is 43.4 million naira, truly stamped by the social welfare unit of Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital AE-FUTHA, Abakaliki

"And now we want to make a formal presentation of the sum to the management of this hospital led by Dr. Robinson Onoh.

"Here we are Philanthropic Family with over 200 members from South east region with the aim and objectives of helping in addressing health challenges.

"We are also into education intervention where we give scholarships and build classrooms to improve learning and teaching in schools across the five states in South East.

"Presently we have classroom building projects ongoing in south east states and we are assuring the management of Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital of our continual intervention in the area of health henceforth.

Again, we are giving out the sum of 5.2.million naira that would be shared to the patients, so approximately each of them is expected to go home with not less than 70,000,"he said.

Earlier, the Chief Medical Director of AE-FUTHA Abakaliki, Dr. Robinson Onoh who commended the organization for the humanitarian gesture, also pleded with them to assist the hospital in it's proposed plan to start heart surgery programme.

"The good thing about De Imperial is that we do not write to them or made any formal contact, they came on their own. And I what to say thank you. This money will go along way in advancing some programmes in the hospital.

"Presently, we have concluded plans to start heart surgery and we are using this opportunity to appeal to De Imperial Philanthropic Family to assist the patient in this direction.

"Now you can see smiles on the faces of these patients. Some of them have stayed here for more than one year without anyone to pay or clear their bills accept now your intervened.

"And I what to tell you that the joy and happiness you restored in the faces of this people here will never been erased",he stated.

One the beneficiaries Mr.Sunday Masomachi who thanked the organization for coming to their aid prayed God to continue to bless them.

Youths Demand Sanctions Against Arise News Over Umahi Interview"*


A youth coalition in Ebonyi State has petitioned the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC), the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), and the Federal Ministry of Information, demanding sanctions against Arise News and anchor Rufai Oseni for their alleged "disrespectful and unprofessional" interview with Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi.

The group, Concerned Youths for Distinguished Senator Engineer David Umahi, staged a peaceful protest in Abakaliki, accusing Oseni of breaching ethical standards during the live broadcast.

Carrying placards with messages such as “Arise TV and Rufai Oseni Must Apologize Now” and “NBC, BON Must Act Against Media Misconduct,” among others, the protesters demanded a public apology and regulatory action against both the station and the anchor.

“We are deeply disappointed by the conduct of Mr. Rufai Oseni during the interview with Senator Umahi,” said Pastor Damian Onu, the leader of the group.

“It was not only disrespectful but amounted to a media ambush of a serving federal minister and former governor," he further stated.

The group’s petition, submitted to relevant media regulatory bodies, calls for a review of the interview and disciplinary measures for what they termed a “breach of ethical journalism.” They insist that the tone and approach of the interview undermined the dignity of public office.

Onu described Senator Umahi as “a national asset” and a central figure in the implementation of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, particularly in the area of road infrastructure.

“Senator Umahi’s record speaks for itself. He has transformed infrastructure both at the state and national level and should be accorded the respect his office demands,” he said.

The protest followed a recent Arise TV interview in which Senator Umahi engaged in a heated exchange with Mr. Oseni, urging the anchor to allow him to speak.

The exchange sparked widespread reactions on social media, with divided opinions on the conduct of both parties.

Speaking during the protest, Comrade Sunday Agbo, a former local government coordinator, said: “We are not against the media or press freedom. What we demand is professionalism. No journalist should attempt to tarnish the image of a public official who is delivering on his mandate.”

As of press time, neither Arise News nor Mr. Oseni had issued a formal response to the protest or the 24-hour ultimatum issued by the group.

The NBC and BON have also not released any official statements regarding the petition.

The group concluded by reaffirming their support for Senator Umahi and urged media practitioners to uphold ethical standards in the discharge of their duties.

Sickle Cell Advocate Seeks Prosecution of Ebonyi Cleric Over Alleged Assault"



A sickle -cell advocate, Aisha Edwards Maduagwu, has called for prosecution of Ebonyi cleric, Ndubueze Samuel Onyeagoziri for allegedly assaulting a 22 year old sickle -cell girl, Euphemia Ede.

Ndubueze has been in detention at the crack office of the police headquarters, Abakaliki since last Wednesday over the act.

Maduagwu, who alleged that she was also harassed by the cleric who is the bishop of a new generation church in Ebonyi State, Champions of the truth cathedral, called for immediate prosecution of the man.

In a petition to the state Commissioner of Police, Adaku Uche-Anya, the
Director of Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home, called for justice for Ede.

She implored the Commissioner and the investigative team to prioritize the case by ensuring that the bishop's detention leads to comprehensive justice for all victims, noting that silence or inaction risks perpetuating the cycle of abuse.

"As a long standing sickle cell advocate dedicated to supporting victims of exploitation and advocating for systemic change on how sickle cell persons are treated, I make this undersigned release in solidarity with a sickle cell victim (Names withheld) who was sexually exploited by one Bishop Sam. Ndubueze Onyeagoziri Okorie, the General Overseer of Champion the Truth Cathedral.

"As a survivor of sexual harassment by this same Bishop sometime in 1997 at Victory International Bible College, at Nzekwe Close Asata Enugu Where the bishop was then a principal of the college and I was a student, I call upon the Ebonyi State police command to treat this case diligently inorder to uncover any similar incidence, as these may go unreported by the victims who might be held back by fear of stigmatization.

"Bishop Sam Ndubueze is an older man serving as a Bishop—a figure who should have embodied paternal guidance and moral support, not predation. This egregious violation of the sickle cell patient represents a profound betrayal of trust.

"The sickle cell patient, already enduring the physical and emotional challenges of her condition, sought solace and counsel from a religious leader positioned as a father figure. Instead, she was subjected to marathon sexual exploitation and threats that has compounded her suffering.

"My own experience of harassment by this Bishop further underscores his pattern of abuse, exploiting his authority to prey on the vulnerable. These acts not only harm individuals, but erode the foundations of faith, as my convinction in Christendom was shaken.

" Since the harassment, I haven't again viewed the Pentecostal churches in good light, as I find succor with the Catholic faith through the then Bishop of Enugu Catholic Diocese Bishop Gbuji, who brought me under his wings, provided for and rehabilitated me through his secretary Rev Fr. Dr.Tony Iloanusi.

"Compounding this pattern of predation are my personal experience of financial exploitations and fake miracles peddled by the likes of Bishop Ndubueze Okorie, which have left countless families in penury and crippling debts.

" Desperate congregants, including those battling chronic illness like sickle cell, are lured with promises of divine healing and breakthroughs, often requiring exorbitant "seed offerings," special prayers, or ritualistic payments, that deliver but false hope and financial ruin.

" These predatory tactics strip vulnerable households of their meager resources, pushing them deeper into poverty while the perpetrators amass wealth under the guise of ministry.

"This would eventually leave the parents heavily frustrated, making them to turn against their children in anger and hate, viewing them as the source of their troubles.

"Part of my advocacy as founder of the Association of People Living with Sickle Cell Disorder, and Executive Director, of the Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home Agulu, Anambra State, is to call for the protection and support for all sickle cell patients and survivors of such exploitations, to have easy access to medical care, counseling, and legal aid tailored to their needs.

"Also, full accountability for every perpetrator abusing sickle cell persons, with charges pursued to the full extent of the law, reinforcing that no position or authority shields one from justice.

" The State police command under the courageous Commissioner, holds a duty to uphold the law and protect the most vulnerable among us.

"We implore the Commissioner and the investigative team to prioritize this case, ensuring the Bishop's detention leads to comprehensive justice for all victims. Silence or inaction risks perpetuating the cycle of abuse.

"Thank you Sir, as we await your speedy but yet discreet investigation on this pertinent issue of abuse", she wrote.

The Ebonyi State government has denied allegations of attacking members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at the People's Club in Abakaliki.


Special Adviser to the State Governor on Inter- Party Affairs Sunday Nwanbam who stated this while reacting to the alleged attack at a Press conference in Abakaliki , clarified that no member of the ADC was attacked or arrested by government agents or security operatives.

Nwanbam emphasized that the government maintains a cordial relationship with all 17 registered political parties in the state, as confirmed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He attributed the peaceful political climate in the state to the good administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru, who prioritizes peace and stability.

Nwanbam urged political parties to operate peacefully and notify relevant authorities when hosting meetings, ensuring the safety and security of attendees.

He emphasized that the government is committed to maintaining peace and stability in the state and supports all political parties.

He said : "we have 17 registered political parties in Ebonyi State. That's the figure INEC gave to me last year.I know it might have increased.All the political parties in Ebonyi State are very friendly and very supportive.

"And the government has been protecting their interests.Elections have come and gone, we only have one governor. Now, it's only that one governor that is taking good care of all the people of Ebonyi State.
"We don't discriminate whether you are APC, whether you are PDP, whether you are a Labour Party or ADC. So, all of us are working together. (1:15) And that is why you can attest to it that since the 2023 general election party, we have not had any crisis politically.

'Invite security to take good care of your people in the meeting. No, we have not seen, nobody has reported to us that they were attacked.Ebonyi State doesn't know whether you are having a meeting or not.

"It is not our responsibility. Our responsibility is to take care of Eboe people who voted massively for Governor Francis Nwifuru and other leaders in Ebonyi State. We don't know when they have a meeting.

"Nobody notified me as they said to the governor. And I don't think they notified the IPAC chairman, who is also the chairman of other political parties in Ebonyi State.

"Levi Ajah Declares Interest for 2027 Ebonyi South Senatorial Election"


Human rights activist and social crusader Levi Ajah has announced his intention to contest the Ebonyi South Senatorial seat in the 2027 general election under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).


Ajah, who disclosed this to journalists, shortly after a summit of Nigeria Coalition Alliance NCA, and African Democratic Congress ADC, in Abakaliki, expressed confidence in his ability to win, citing the strength of his party.


Ajah previously ran for the same seat in 2023 but was allegedly rigged out by the All Progressives Congress (APC). He's determined to emerge victorious in the upcoming election, emphasizing the ADC's commitment to truth and democracy.

Court Slams Nigerian Correctional Service for Assault on Lawyer"


The Abakaliki Division of the Federal High Court has ordered the Nigerian Correctional Service in the state to pay a Lawyer, Ekigbo Sampson N22million damages and costs for assault against him its officers.

The judgment, delivered on Thursday by Justice Hillary Oshomah in suit number FHC/AI/FHR/11/2025, followed fundamental rights enforcement action filed by Ekigbo on January 30, 2025.

The applicant was brutally assaulted on November 26, 2024, at Harriz Filling Station, Abakaliki, by two men identified as Ifeanyi Nwovu and Ogwuma Chidi.

The lawyer, who is also a presiding officer in the Customary Court, filed a suit against the the Service, its Comptroller General and the Comptroller in Charge of Ebonyi Command of the Service and the two officers.

In his ruling, Justice Oshomah held that the beating amounted to a gross violation of the applicant’s fundamental human rights, particularly his right to dignity of person as enshrined under Section 34 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

"The beating of the Applicant who is presiding officer of customary court and legal practitioner at Harriz Filling Station, Abakaliki on the 26thday of November, 2024 without just cause by the 4th and 5th Respondents who were working for the 1st to 3rd Respondents, is a gross violation of the Fundamental Human Rights of the Applicant to dignity of his person contrary to Section 34 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria"

He further issued a perpetual injunction restraining the espondents and their agents from further torturing, intimidating, or molesting the applicant without lawful cause.

"An Order of Perpetual Injunction be and is hereby granted by this Honourable Court restraining the Respondents or anyone acting through them from torturing, molesting and/or intimidating the Applicant without committing any known wrong or offence or without a justifiable reason", the judge said.

The Judge also ordered the Respondents to tender an unreserved apology to the applicant, to be published in two national dailies within 14 days.

"That the Respondents are by order of this Honourable Court mandated to tender an unreserved apology to the Applicant and same to be published in Two National Dailies within 14 days of this Judgment", the Judge said

Justice Oshomah further awarded ₦20 million as compensation for the assault and the pain suffered by the applicant.

In addition, the court awarded an additional ₦2 million to cover costs and expenses incurred in the prosecution of the case by the applicants.

He said: "That N20,000,000.00 (Twenty Million Naira) only is hereby assessed and awarded against the Respondents jointly and severally as compensation for the pains and torture that was meted on the Applicant by the 4th and 5th Respondents on 26h November, 2024.

"Cost and expenses incidental to the institution and prosecution of this action is by order of this Honourable Court assessed to be N2, 000, 000.00 (Two Million Naira) in favour of the Applicant against the Respondents jointly and severally", the Judge added.

The court imposed a 10% per annum post-judgment interest on the cumulative judgment sum should the respondents fail to pay within 14 days.

"Post judgment interest at the rate of 10% per annum on the entire cumulative Judgment sum is hereby awarded, to commence running if after 14 days from this Judgment the judgment sum is not finally and fully liquidated by the Respondents", the judge said.

Neither the applicant nor the respondents were physically present in court during the judgment.

Their lawyers C.C. Aliugo, for the applicant, and Samuel Nwalieze, for the respondents were however in court.

Aliugo described the ruling as a bold step in reinforcing the sanctity of fundamental human rights and sending a strong signal against abuse of power by security agencies.

Ekigbo in an interview on Friday expressed relief at the judgement.

Recounting his ordeal, he said the incident occurred on November 24, 2024, after a tricycle rammed into his vehicle at Harriz Filling Station Abakaliki where he had gone for repairs.

He noted that he was attacked by two armed officers of the Correctional Service who slapped and dragged him, threatening to shoot him despite his protests that he was a judicial officer.

The assault, he said, left him with a severe ear injury that required hospitalization.

He further noted that all efforts by him, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and civil society groups to seek redress from the authorities were ignored, prompting his decision to go to court.

“I followed the path of peace, but they neglected every intervention. The judgment today is justice. I will ensure the judgment is enforced to the letter,” Ekibu stated.

He emphasized that the victory was not only personal but also a step toward upholding the dignity of judicial officers and the protection of citizens’ rights.

Ebonyi govt Disburses N100m, Relief Materials To 894 Flood Victims in Afikpo

The Ebonyi State Government has disbursed N100 million in cash and relief materials to 894 flood victims in Enohia Itim community, Afikpo Local Government Area of the State.

The flood, which occurred between July and August, claimed eight lives and destroyed properties worth millions of naira.

The relief materials included bags of rice, garri, mattresses, and buckets. Families who lost loved ones received N1 million each, while those whose crops were destroyed received N500,000 each. Other victims received N250,000 each, along with the relief materials.

Each of the victims also got 4 bags of rice, 2 bags of garri, mattress and buckets.

The acting Governor of the State. Princess Patricia Obila flagged off the disbursement.

Princess Obila while addressing the people, noted that the money and relief items disbursed to them was in fulfillment of the government’s promise to come to their aid following the flood disaster.

She described Governor Nwifuru as a compassionate leader who does not joke with the well-being of the people.

The Acting Governor urged the Afikpo people to continue to support the administration of Governor Nwifuru for more dividends of democracy.


The Commissioner for Human Capital Development, Mrs. Ann Aligwe, who supervised the distribution of the cash and relief materials praised Governor Francis Nwifuru for his swift response to the disaster, describing him as a welfare-oriented governor.

"Our dear Governor is a welfare Governor. He has come to Ebonyi State to take care of the people through his people Charter of Needs manifesto. This is why you are having this items and cash here.

"When we got information that Enohia Itim community was affected by flood disaster which claimed lives and destroyed property, we quickly dispatched our officials to the community.

"After this assessment and evaluation, we went to His Excellency and discussed with him and as a humanitarian Governor, he said no.that he is the Governor of everybody, he is from Afikpo Local Government Area because his Deputy is from Afikpo local government.

"He immediately approved hundreds of millions and said we should procure relief materials, food items and also give cash to all the people affected by the flood in Enohia Itim", she said

The Chairman of Afikpo LGA, Chief Timothy Nwachi, also commended the governor's administration for its responsiveness to the people's needs.

He said flood has been happening in the local government without any compensation for the victims until Governor Francis Nwifuru became Governor and provided succour for the victims.

"The government is responding, not just responding but responding timely.

'We sent a distress call to the appropriate authorities and in less than 32 days, we are receiving this response.

"So, that's goes to say that the government we have as it stands now, is a government that responds to people's needs and is a government that is responsive to the problems of those they are leading.

"So, I want to sincerely thank our dear Governor and all the agencies that are working under him and every other relevant agencies that made today a success", Nwachi said.

Some of the victims, including Blessing Okoche and Mrs. Favour Edwin, who lost their loved ones to the flood, expressed gratitude to the governor for the gesture, saying it will help alleviate their suffering.

Court remands 5 over murder of youth in Ebonyi



Five men were on Wednesday arrainged before an Abakaliki Magistrates' Court over alleged murder and robbery of a truck valued N39 million only, property of Dr Eni Uduma-Chima.

Uduma-Chima is currently, the Chairman of Ebonyi State Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited Board.

The suspects include: Amarachi Irem, 27, Oledi Philip-Nsi, 26, Ogbu Nkama, 22, Chibueze Nnachi, 36 and Okoro Stanley Onuu, 39.

The suspects, are facing a four count charge of conspiracy, murder, armed robbery and unlawful possession of firearms.

One of the suspects, Oledi Philip Nsi was in addition to the other charges further charged with attempted murder of Hon. Eni Uduma Chima on the 1st of June, 2025 at Ekoli-Edda.

The Police Prosecutor, Eze Ndubuaku told the court that the suspects committed the offences on July 9, at Ndienworo village, Ekoli Edda local government area of Ebonyi.

Ndubuaku said that the defendants conspired amongst themselves to commit murder and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 324 of the Criminal Code Cap 33 Vol. 1 Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria 2009.

"They also did kill one Udu Nnachi-Orji, ‘m’ by shooting him with gun which caused his death and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap 33 Vol. 1 Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria 2009.

"The suspects also robbed a truck valued thirty nine million naira only (₦39,000,000.00) property of Eni Uduma Chima," he added

Mr Sunday Ajah, Defence Counsel prayed the court to grant the suspects bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Sandra Onyibe however rejected the bail application and adjourned the matter to Oct. 2 for report of compliance.

According to the Magistrate, the court lacks the jurisdiction to grant them bail.

Meanwhile, elders of Ekoli-Edda community have applauded the authorities of the Nigerian Police Force under the leadership of CP Adaku Uche-Anya for the professionalism displayed by her team in the arrest, charging and remanding of the suspects in connection with the crises in Ekoli-Edda community.

One of them, who spoke to newsmen, Chief Etta Egor praised the CP for allegedly resisting every political pressures from very high quarters to ensure that perpetrators of heinous crimes in the community were brought to book.

"We commend the CP and the investigating officers very highly for their professional conducts. Even though some are still on the run, we have confidence that they will all be netted. Atpm least peace and calm have returned to Ekoli since these arrests and prosecutions began", he maintained.

Ebonyi Community Ezeship Tussle: Contestant Sues for Peace Amidst Tension


A contentious traditional leadership tussle in Izzo Ezza Autonomous Community, Ezilo, Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has taken a positive turn as one of the contestants, Chief Sunday Ogbule, has called for peace and unity among the community members.


Chief Ogbule made this appeal after a crucial meeting with the Principal Secretary to the Governor, Chief Mathias Adum, at the Old Government House in Abakaliki.

The meeting aimed to resolve the lingering traditional leadership impasse that has kept the community on edge for months.


Ogbule who emphasized the need for the community to come together said he is going to make sure that he complement the efforts of the Governor of the State, Mr Francis Nwifuru in ensuring permanent peace in Izzo autonomous community.

As a prominent contender, Ogbule outlined his vision for the community, which includes initiatives to foster unity and development.

He proposed organizing football tournaments and other community-driven activities to bring together the people of Izzo Ezza and Ezilo communities.



"We are here to answer the call made by the Principal Secretary to the Governor to resolve the lingering issues over the Traditional stool of our dear community Izzo which has lingered for some months". He said.

".Everything concerning who becomes what in the community has been going smoothly because things were done and given based on the first settlers of the Izzo community because we Ezzas migrated to that place Ezilo which has metamorphosed to Izzo community today".



Another Contestant, Orugbala Sunday Oche, said the community has chosen him to run for the traditional ruler of the place.

"I was their Town Union President and there was peace and tranquility during my reign. I believe that is why they are begging me to come and become their traditional ruler.

The Commissioner for Information, Barrister Ikeuwa Omebe applauded the community for coming to answer the call by the Government in order to resolve the traditional leadership matter amicably.

"I believe, If they want crisis, they would not have been here but as you can see, they want free and fair election hence the obedience to come and answer the Government call for meeting" Omebe disclosed

The Deputy Chief Whip representing Ishielu North State Constituency, Chukwu Arinze said "there's no crisis, it is normal in every contest. But the good news is that "We have resolved to conduct free and fair elections for them.

President General, Comrade Ojeogu Ikechukwu said the Principal Secretary to Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief Mathias Adum has directed that whoever wants to become the traditional ruler should first of all go and make peace with his people as government is for peace for all.

David Umahi varsity treats 2,412 eye patients free, distributes 1,000 glasses in 7 months



The David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS), Uburu, Ebonyi State has provided free treatment to 2,412 patients with eye conditions within seven months through its Free Eye Care Initiative and Eye Research Programme. The university also distributed 1,000 eyeglasses to patients at no cost.


The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jesse Uneke who announced this at a press and media engagement held at the institution’s Ultramodern Eye Centre and Institute for Eye Health and Visual Sciences Research (IEHVSR), said the programme was part of DUFUHS’s mandate on research, training, and community development.

According to him, the facility, supported by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), was established to address Nigeria’s rising burden of visual impairment and blindness, which currently affects an estimated 24 million people.

“Our Free Eye Care Initiative has drastically reduced avoidable blindness and provided an opportunity for training, research, and patient care. From February to date, we have treated 2,412 persons—1,352 for refractive errors, 627 for cataracts, 168 for glaucoma, and 265 for other conditions. We also gave out 400 reading glasses and 600 prescription glasses free of charge,” Uneke stated.

He emphasized that the DUFUHS Eye Centre operates with a multidisciplinary team of ophthalmologists, optometrists, nurses, biomedical engineers, and ICT experts working to improve access to eye care, especially for rural dwellers in Ebonyi State and beyond.

The Vice Chancellor noted that 84% of blindness in Nigeria is due to preventable causes, stressing the need for regular eye checks, public awareness, and affordable treatment.

He added that the Centre aligns with the World Health Organization’s SPECS 2030 initiative, which seeks to expand access to quality, affordable refractive error services globally.

The DUFUHS Eye Centre’s primary objectives, he explained, include enhancing accessibility to eye services in rural communities, increasing awareness of regular eye examinations, providing affordable solutions for the less privileged, and developing sustainable long-term strategies for vision care.

Prof. Uneke assured that the university would continue to strengthen its training, research, and community health programmes in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with the ultimate aim of reversing both medical and educational tourism.

Nwifuru Rewards Trek-a-thon Hero with N10m Gift




The Ebonyi State government has announced a N10 million gift for Jeremiah Obaji, the Trek-a-thon Hero, who trekked 17 days from Ikorodu, Lagos State, to Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

The Chief of Staff to the Ebonyi State Government, Prof. Emma Echiegu, announced this on behalf of the Governor while receiving Obaji at the New Government House, Abakaliki.

Prof. Echiegu commended Obaji for trekking such a long distance to Abakaliki to appreciate the Governor and honour the peace efforts of the present administration in the state.

Obaji, an indigene of the newly created Anioma autonomous community in the defunct Effium community, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state, arrived in Abakaliki on Sunday, making it a total of 17 days since he embarked on the journey.


The Governor, represented by Prof. Echiegu, assured that he will continue to ensure peace in different parts of the state as part of his People’s Charter of Needs manifesto.

Earlier, Mr. Obaji said he decided to trek to Abakaliki to appreciate Governor Francis Nwifuru for restoring peace to the Effium community, which was ravaged by a communal war that claimed hundreds of lives and property worth billions of naira.


Obaji commended the Governor for restoring permanent peace in the troubled community, saying that there could not have been any other way to appreciate the Governor than the trek to Abakaliki.

“My community was in serious crisis. Many souls were lost, and many properties were destroyed. My parents, in-laws, and other relatives are here in Abakaliki because of this war. “I have been the one taking care of all of them, and I developed high blood pressure because of what I have been passing through over this crisis,” he explained.


Obaji stated that he decided to trek from Ikorodu, Lagos State, to Abakaliki to appreciate the Governor for his efforts in restoring peace to his community. The Governor's gesture is seen as a token of appreciation for Obaji's efforts in acknowledging the peace efforts in the state.

Mr. Obaji was later hosted by the people and stakeholders of the Anioma and Ezekuna Autonomous Communities in Abakaliki to appreciate him for his remarkable trek and to honor his dedication to acknowledging the peace efforts of the state government.

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has urged Ebonyi women to rise and inspire positive change in their environment, describing them as agents of social change.

The Governor made this call at the grand finale of the 2025 Ebonyi Women August Meeting, with the theme “Women who Inspire Change.”

Senator Nwebonyi Flags Off Distribution of Educational Materials in Ebonyi North Schools




The Senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial district, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, has flagged off the distribution of educational materials, including school desks and other instructional materials, to schools across the senatorial district.

The event, held at Ohaukwu Local Government Headquarters, featured the presentation of some of the procured 2,000 units of 3-in-1 desks, expected to provide seating for about 6,000 pupils in both primary and secondary schools.

In addition to the desks, exercise books, English and Mathematics textbooks, and other writing materials were distributed to students.

Speaking during the ceremony, Nwebonyi, the Senate Deputy Chief Whip, said the initiative was aimed at tackling illiteracy and improving learning conditions in Ebonyi North.

“The development of every society is dependent on the quality of education given to our children, because today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders,” he emphasized.

The lawmaker highlighted some of his achievements since assuming office, including the construction of over 16 kilometres of concrete roads, distribution of vehicles, motorcycles, agricultural processing machines, and scholarships to over 300 students. A Commissioner in the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC), Hon. Emmanuel Oko Ibiam, has pledged to perform at his best as a member of the board, saying the he would not disappoint Governor Nwifuru for appointing him to the electoral commission.

Ibiam made the pledge in Abakaliki during a program organized by his people to celebrate his appointment as Commissioner.

Ibiam expressed confidence in other members of the board, saying they have the capacity to deliver beyond expectations.

He thanked Governor Nwifuru for giving them the opportunity to serve, stating, “I thank His Excellency Governor Francis Nwifuru for this appointment, and I will not disappoint him.”
According to the new electoral law, Ibiam noted that electoral preparations would commence one year before the election, and the commission has already begun preparations.

Ibiam described Governor Nwifuru as a true democrat who believes in fairness in electoral matters. He called on individuals who believe in their ability to win elections to start grassroots campaigns and mobilization, assuring them of the commission’s credibility. “We are going to be thorough, we are going to be sincere, we are not going to look at somebody’s face to do our work, and we are going to do our work uprightly so that God will be glorified, and the name of the Governor will not be dented,” he added.

Engr. Mbam's story is one of dedication, hard work, and passion for engineering. From his early days as a highway engineer to his current role as Commissioner for Works, he has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership and technical prowess.

Professional Background:

Engr Stanley Lebechi Mbam's professional journey began in 2013 as a highway engineer at Patan Construction Company in Abakaliki.

His exceptional talent and dedication earned him recognition, and he was soon sought after by Filze Nigeria Limited. He later served as General Manager at Ebonyi North Construction Company Limited from 2017 to 2019.

His outstanding skills and commitment to excellence caught the attention of former Governor Engr David Umahi Nweze, who appointed him as Special Assistant on Project Monitoring.

Currently serving as the honourable Commissioner for Works in Ebonyi State, Engr Mbam's visionary leadership and expertise are driving transformative infrastructural projects.

Significantly, he has continued to drive the People's Charter of Needs Agenda of His Excellency, Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, forward.

Thus, delivering impactful road construction and infrastructural projects that benefit the people of Ebonyi State. Under his leadership, significant strides have been made in transforming Ebonyi State with numerous completed projects and more in view.

For instance, countless road projects have been completed, and many more are in progress. Notable among the ongoing projects is the infrastructural masterpiece, "Vanco Flyover".

Beyond his professional achievements, Engr Stanley Lebechi Mbam is committed to giving back to the community through his foundation, the MSL Foundation.

NSCDC/police clash:_ Gunshot victims narrate ordeal, blame Ebonyi Reps member,

Some survivors of deadly clash between men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps(NSCDC) and team of policemen in Ebonyi State, have narrated how they escaped death during the incident which left a policeman dead with many people sustaining varying degree of injuries.

The clash occurred last week in a mining pit in Amaeze community, Ishiagu in Ivo Local Government Area of the state.

Chukwu Ajah who narrated how he escaped bullet wounds during the incident, blamed the clash and the eventual death of the man on what he called ‘overzealousness and a gestapo style’ of operations displayed by the policemen which according to him was not only thoroughly unprofessional but lacked the barest minimum of standard operating procedures.

“We closed work in our site around 4:33 p.m on that Wednesday and we wanted to go, and because that place is very dangerous because it is where Fulani herdsmen are killing our community members, we asked the Civil Defense Officers guarding the site to escort us.

“As we were returning, we saw three police vans fully loaded with armed policemen numbering over 30. We were trying to give them a chance to pass, but we did not know that they came for us. At the end, they stopped our movement.

The most senior Civil Defense personnel among the five officers with us stopped and asked them what was the problem? They (the police team) asked him who are you? He replied that I am the Civil Defense Officer guiding this company. They are under my control. If there is any problem, let me know. They said that our director; Pastor Dr. Nathan Aniokwute who is the Director of our firm, Hephzibah and Beulah Concepts Ltd. is under arrest.

“So the Civil Defense Officer, John said okay, give him invitation, we will bring him to the police. They refused. He pleaded with them again and they refused. They now collected his (the NSCDC Officer’s) gun and removed his magazines.

He asked them to give him back his magazine and that they should allow them bring the man (the Director) to them and that the man was under their custody as security personnel attached to the company, but they refused.

“Then they started beating the NSCDC Officer and beat him to stupor and collected his gun and the magazine. They later threw away the gun and held the magazine. The NSCDC Officer said it is either you give me back my magazine or you kill me. They started shooting and in the process, they wanted to shoot the Civil Defense Officer but the bullet now hit the police officer, Shedrack and he died on the spot.

“At that point, they started beating the director and the Civil Defense Officer mercilessly. They collected the director’s car key, stripped him naked and started torturing him like a common criminal”, Ajah, who said there was no prior invitation or petition sent to the director or the company recounted, claiming that from their conducts, they may have been on an illegal or unauthorized operation”, he stated.

He said they were shocked that the police waylaid them despite serving notices to all the security agencies in the state including the Commissioner of Police, the DPO of Ivo Division before they moved into the site, maintaining that they were all aware that the company was moving to the site to begin their operations.

Ajah blamed the genesis of the crisis in the mineral-rich Amaeze community in the area on the village Chairman whom he accused of collecting money from another miner who owns a company called Palladum and Zottmann in other areas in Ishiagu and promised to give him the site which is legally owned by Hephzibah and Beulah who has an operating license.

His words: “both the village Chairman and the Honourable member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Kama Nkemkanma said they don’t want the rightful owner of the license, Pastor Dr. Nathan. We heard that the Zotmann and his group promised to bankroll the re-election of the lawmaker in 2027. And that is why they wrote a petition to the Mining Cadastral Office in Abuja against Pastor and the man went to answer with some of the village people.

“There, the Cadastral told the petitioners in Hon. Kama’s presence that consent of a quarry or mining company is irrevocable and that the man (Pastor Nathan) has a valid license and therefore they should allow the man carry out his operations.

“ Kama and his group refused. We heard he had called the oga of NSCDC that they should withdraw the officers in the site and you know that mining is under them”, he claimed.

Another victim, Onyekachi Nwaeni who sustained gunshot injury on his foot during the incident and currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital, narrated how he was hit by a stray bullet during the encounter.

“We finished working in our mining site owned by a licensed miner on that day and we were already going home. We knew that there is a problem between the owner and this trouble is being sponsored by one man called Victor who wants to take over the mining site from the licensed owner. The Federal Government had given that owner a license to mine there.

“But some people in the community went and ganged up with that Victor to take over that site by force through his own Company called Palladum or Zotmann. We heard he gave bribes to make sure that some stakeholders from the community take the place back from the lawful owner and you know the government cannot give two persons license to mine there.

“And that rightful owner was now ready to start work on the site but they doubted his capacity, saying he doesn’t even have the necessary equipments to mine there. Even the Commissioner for Solid Minerals had asked them to allow the licensed and rightful owner to do his business in the site but they refused.

Two days before the clash, the man surprised everybody by bringing in brand new equipments into the site to commence work. I think they must have given the police a wrong information about what happened and that was why they (police) blocked us while we were on our way home alongside the Civil Defense Officers that were with us.

They wanted to arrest some of us and the Civil Defense Officers that were with us. The officers (NSCDC) said there was no problem and that we should go together with them including their Oga. It was then they (the policemen) started making trouble and shooting. That was how I and my brother were shot on the leg. I didn’t know myself again after the gunshot but I was rushed to the hospital”,

Reacting to the incident and the allegation against him, the member representing Ohaozara, Onicha and Ivo federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Nkemkanma Kama, said the community rejected Hephzibah and Beulah company for the mining business and the company forced themselves on the community which led to the crisis


“How did I caused the crisis in Amaeze, how? There was a meeting the community held last Saturday over the mining issue and I pleaded with the community to allow Hephzibah and Beulah company to come in and they said they don’t want the company.


“At a point, we now said anyone who is supporting the company to operate in the community should queue up and it was under the rain. My brother, not even a single person, queued behind Pastor Nathan the owner of this Hephzibah and Beulah company. The videos of everything that day are there for everybody to see.

“We now asked the man, will you go and work in Sambisa forest and he said no and we asked him why do you want to go and work in a place where people don’t you to come in?


“I told him since it is like this, I want you to quickly tell me how much you have spent in this transaction to ensure you don’t loss so that there will be peace. He refused this offer”, Kama said.

Edda Clan Celebrates Maiden Edition of Ike-Ji Festival with Glamour and Cultural Display



The Edda Clan of Ebonyi State celebrated the maiden edition of Ike-ji Edda (New Yam Festival), 2025, organized by all the autonomous communities in Edda LGA, with great fanfare.

The event, held at Nguzu Primary School, Nguzu Edda, was themed "Ike-Ji Edda: The New Dawn of a New Era."

The celebration was attended by prominent sons and daughters of Edda Clan, including top government functionaries, traditional rulers, youths, and women's groups.

The APC State Chairman, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, a great son of Edda, commended the peace and unity enjoyed in Edda, describing it as worthy of celebration.

Chief Emegha praised Governor Francis Nwifuru's developmental achievements, noting that the people of Edda are primed to support his second term in 2027.
He attributed their decision to the governor's demonstrated love for Edda Local Government, highlighting numerous unprecedented projects across various communities.

"Focus on Alleviating Hardship - Apostle Nwaze Tells Nigeria Leaders"


The lead pastor of Mount Zion Foundation Gospel Revival Mission, Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area in Ebonyi State, Apostle Dr. Nwaze Ogbonnaya, has appealed to Nigerian leaders to prioritize alleviating the current hardship in the country instead of focusing on the politics of 2027.

He spoke recently at the church during their seven-day holy Christian program, which held on August 18, 2025.

Delivering his message titled "God is Rebuilding His Church," Apostle Dr. Nwaze referenced Exodus 24:1-4, 1 Peter 2:4-5, and Jeremiah 23:29.

He emphasized that God's word is like fire that burns everything and like a hammer that breaks all rocks into pieces.

He noted that God wants people to focus on building His spiritual church, which is formed by living stones (believers) and is not a physical building.

Apostle Dr. Nwaze prayed for Nigeria and called on leaders to focus on the betterment of citizens, given the current hardship in the country.

He emphasized that every Christian is called to a form of ministry or service within the body of Christ, which includes the church.

Ebonyi: Edda West DC Coordinator Kicks Off Repair Works on Ebunwana-Igbara Road


The Coordinator of Edda West Development Center, Hon. Jecklin Onwubiko Ukpai, has commenced repair works on the failed portions of the Ebunwana-Igbara road in Edda LGA of Ebonyi State.

The road had been experiencing erosion due to natural and human activities, prompting the Ebunwana Council of Traditional Rulers to raise an alarm on August 21, 2025. Impressively, Hon. Ukpai swung into action just five days later, on August 25, 2025, and has promised to complete the work before the weekend.


At the site, significant progress has been made, with heavy skilled labor working tirelessly to restore the road. The repair process involves laying a concrete stone base, followed by laterite on the failed portions.


This initiative underscores Hon. Ukpai's commitment to improving the lives of the people in Edda West. Notably, he also has a road project underway in Itim Edda, demonstrating his dedication to infrastructure development in the area in line with Governor Francis Nwifuru's People's charter of needs agenda.

The swift response to the road's deterioration and the coordinator's proactive approach have been well-received by the community, reflecting positively on his leadership and vision for Edda West Development Center.

Ebonyi Women Affairs Commissioner, Nwamkpuma, Denies Police Detention Allegations over sale of a baby






The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Felicia Nwamkpuma, has denied allegations that she has been in police detention since Monday, August 18, 2025, over claims of selling a baby for N25 million.

A 29-year-old woman, Susan Nweze, and her family alleged that her newborn baby was sold for N25 million by the state police command in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and other security agencies.

The family petitioned the Force Zonal Headquarters of the Police in Enugu, prompting an investigation.

Speaking to Journalists in Abakaliki Mrs. Nwamkpuma explained that she was invited by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in Enugu to present the baby, which the Ministry of Women Affairs has been keeping in custody. She stated that after presenting the baby on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, the AIG allowed her to return with the baby the same day.


The Commissioner emphasized that the Ministry of Women Affairs has the statutory right to keep vulnerable children safe and protected. She assured the public that the baby is currently under the Ministry's care and that no baby was sold, as alleged.

"On this matter, someone petitioned AIG Enugu and investigation into the matter is still ongoing. We have been invited to show the baby to show that this baby is with us.

"So, we have taken the baby to Enugu and AIG has seen the baby. We came back with the baby. We were invited to come to Enugu on that Tuesday with the baby and returned back with the baby on that same Tuesday being 19th August.

"We took the baby from the police to Enugu because they had already given us a handover note. We took the baby from them and we have to wait for the AIG to conclude his investigation.

"I have been in my office working, I was never arrested. I got an invitation from the police AIG. I got the letter on the 14th of August that they will like to see that baby. They told me to come with that baby and on Tuesday, we went to see the AIG with the baby and we were told to go back that same day after seeing the baby.

"We are not trying to cover anybody on this matter or pretend that the baby is not with us and we are saying the baby is with us. The baby is with us, no baby was sold, the ministry did not conspire neither did we in any agree with anybody to sell any baby and the word "sell" is against the child and nature. Babies are not sold.

"So, no baby was sold. The baby is under the Ministry of Women Affairs in a home where the baby is protected and we can't disclose the name of the home for security reasons.

"Before the police came with a letter, we were informed that a couple were requesting for this particular baby, that the mother of the baby said she is financially and emotionally to care for the baby. They said a lot of things in the letter but the Ministry don't just rely on a consent letter from the mother or any body.

"We said okay, until we see the person that wrote that letter, then we can now know the next line of action. The baby was never adopted because when you talk about adoption, it's a legal term that can be done by the court but when a child is brought to us depending on the vulnerability of the child, the first thing we do is to take custody of this child. We take some of them to hospital first so that the child will receive medical care or some, we take them straight to motherless babies home".

Gov Nwifuru Empowers 100 Youths with Skills Acquisition programme




The Ebonyi State Government has launched a skills acquisition program for 100 youths selected from across the 13 Local Government Areas of the State.

The program, flagged off by Governor Francis Nwifuru at the Re-Meritona Hotel and Suites in Abakaliki, aims to equip young people with modern skills to reduce joblessness and promote economic growth in line with the people's charter of needs manifesto.

The training will last for three months, covering various skills such as ICT, Interior Design, and Social Media Management.

urged the beneficiaries to remain focus as to make living with the knowledge gained after the training.

The governor who was represented by the Speaker, Ebonyi state House of Assembly, Moses Ije-Ounwa emphasized the government's commitment to reducing unemployment among youths, citing the program as a more sustainable approach than simply providing cash handouts.


The state Commissioner for Skill Development and Job Creation, Mr Elijah Okwu-Oko who appreciated the state governor for approving the training said the program is expected to contribute to the state's economic development by reducing unemployment and promoting entrepreneurship

He further said the training will equip youths with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in various industries and urged participants to take the training seriously and avoid absenteeism.

FG Engages South-East Stakeholders on New Tax Reform Act, Compliance





The Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Community Engagement, South East, Barr Chioma Nweze has engaged stakeholders from the region in a crucial discussion on the Federal Government's Tax Reform Act and compliance awareness.

The meeting, held at the Dome International Conference Centre, Enugu, aimed to boost economic development in the South East by addressing challenges facing small and medium enterprises

The Town Hall meeting which drew officials of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Market Women and other women groups, professionals, and community stakeholders has the theme “Tax Reform Acts And Compliance; Impact On Small And Medium Enterprises In The South East.”

Speaking during the meeting Mrs Nweze, said the introduction of the tax reform package is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration efforts to make taxation fairer and more beneficial to ordinary Nigerians.

“Our women, especially market women, must understand why government collects tax, what government does with it, and how they should pay without exploitation.

“The President has removed fuel subsidy, unified the exchange rate, and increased allocations to states. These reforms will ensure more projects are delivered to benefit citizens," she said.

Barr. Nweze emphasized that sensitizing women was deliberate, recalling that historical revolts such as the Aba Women’s Riot of 1929 were caused by unfair taxation.

“When women are informed, they carry the message to their families and communities. We don’t want exploitative practices to return; instead, women should be empowered to benefit from government initiatives,” she said.

Barr. Chukwumeka Eze, Chairman of the Tax Appeal Tribunal, Southeast Zone, explained that four new tax acts signed into law on June 26, 2025, now consolidate more than 20 scattered tax laws.

He noted that businesses with an annual turnover below N50 million are exempted from Companies Income Tax and Value Added Tax, while minimum wage earners will no longer pay personal income tax.

“This is progressive taxation. The rich will now pay more within their means, while the poor will be protected. The days when wealthy individuals paid little tax are gone,” Eze stressed.

He added that the reforms also introduced a Tax Dispute Resolution Mechanism that allows citizens to lodge complaints free of charge, with resolutions provided within 7–14 days.

Tax professional and Chartered Accountant, Mr. Innocent Chinyere Ohagwa, said the reforms were necessary to strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal base, describing SMEs as the “lifeblood” of the economy.

“SMEs account for more than 90% of businesses and nearly 60% of jobs in Nigeria. By removing multiple taxation and unfair levies, government is giving them space to grow, create wealth, and support economic diversification," he said.

Dr. Zino Ugboma, representing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), highlighted how tax revenues are being used to expand access to education.

He explained that undergraduates in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education can now access tuition and living-cost loans, repayable only after gaining employment, two years post-NYSC.

“This is a direct way of showing that taxation is not just about collection, but also about giving back to the people,” Ugboma said.

The meeting ended with a call for stronger collaboration to ensure the success of the reforms.

Participants, including Mrs. Nnenna Otuonye, commended President Tinubu for pushing a fairer system and urged Southeast residents to embrace compliance for economic growth.

S-East Leaders to Brainstorm on FG's Tax Reform Act



The Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on community engagement for the South East, Mrs Chioma Nweze is set to lead a stakeholders' town hall meeting to discuss the federal government's tax reform act and compliance awareness.

The meeting, themed "Tax Reform Acts and Compliance: Impact on Small and Medium Enterprises in the South East," aims to boost the region's economic development

Nweze in a statement signed and issued to newsmen in Abakaliki, said that the Minister of Works, David Umahi, governors and other prominent leaders of the region will be in attendance to brainstorm on the tax reform act and compliance awareness.

She stated further that, Chambers of Commerce Leaders, small and medium enterprises, national assembly members, State assembly members, ministers and state commissioners, traditional rulers, and Market women from the five states in the Southeast will also be in attendance.

The town hall meeting, scheduled to hold at Dome International Conference Centre in Enugu, will address challenges facing small and medium enterprises in the region.

The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zach Adedeji, will be the chief host, while ministers, national assembly members, and governors from the five states will be guests of honor.


The federal government has initiated tax reform bills to streamline taxation, eliminate nuisance taxes, and create a unified taxpayer database. The reforms aim to support small businesses, reduce tax burdens, and enhance economic growth.

The meeting is expected to provide valuable insights into the tax reform act and its impact on small and medium enterprises in the South East. By fostering dialogue and understanding, the meeting aims to promote compliance and support economic development in the region

Odii Decries High Poverty Rate, Youth Unemployment in Ebonyi



The governorship candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections in Ebonyi State, Dr. Ifeanyichukwuma Odii, has expressed deep concern over the alarming rate of poverty and unemployment among youths in Ebonyi State.

Odii made this known in a statement signed and issued to newsmen in Abakaliki to Mark this year's international youth Day in Ebonyi state.

The theme for this year's International Youth Day is "Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond." Odii believes this theme is apt and relevant, emphasizing the need for local solutions to address the challenges faced by youths.

The statement reads in part: "The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) speak of a future that is inclusive, just, innovative, and humane. But that future can not be achieved unless we take seriously the local realities of our youth population whose lives, resilience, and cutting-edge solutions are central to our progress.

"In Ebonyi State today, the vast potential of our young people is being obstructed, not by lack of talent, energy, or ambition, but by a systemic failure of leadership and governance to deliver meaningful opportunities for sustainable development and progress. The manifest reality is that Ebonyi youth continue to grapple in excruciating socio-economic challenges.

"Available statistics shows that 'endemic poverty remains widespread, with up to 79.8% of Ebonyians living below the poverty line, and 78% of them trapped in multi-dimensional poverty, including orchestrated deprivation in access to healthcare, sanitation, education, clean water, nutrition, and housing.

"Ebonyi, also ranks '32nd out of 36 states, in the Ease of Doing Business Index,' placing it last among Southeastern states. More unfortunate, we have failed to attract any 'Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) during the period of 2023 till date,' unlike our Southeastern counterparts, which secured several multi-million-dollar industrial projects. The 2024 Subnational Audit Efficacy (SAE)

"Index, Paradigm Leadership Support Initiative released in early 2025 assesses state-level transparency and accountability via audit practices. Ebonyi was at 34th place (out of 36 states), scoring just 7%.

"This low ranking suggests poor audit efficacy and limited transparency in public financial management.These realities represents not just statistics but shattered dreams and wasted possibilities.

"Similarly, youth unemployment and underemployment remain alarmingly high. Tens of thousands of graduates and school leavers roam the streets without jobs or access to sustainable livelihoods.

"The local economy, skewed toward patronage and extractive politics, fails to offer our youths meaningful space for innovation or entrepreneurship. And the rising cost of living continues to choke our underpaid working-class and vulnerable households.

"Food insecurity, housing shortages, and outrageously rising house rent, as well as decaying infrastructure, paint a grim picture of survival, not progress. The foregoing and more are pressing realities of great concern calling for solutions.

"Regardless, it is worthy of note that amid these challenges, through resilience, Ebonyi youth remain spirited, enterprising, and courageous, building small ventures, leading start-ups, breaking barriers in sports, entertainment, fashion, and community organizing.

"It gladens to know that our youths are doing so without reasonable systemic support, often with limited capital, and in the face of apathy from those in power. But trust me, this paradox of enormous potential trapped by poor governance must end someday, especially if we unite our voices.

"This isn’t just my hope but the true representation of my deepest commitment. And while we brace up on the path forward, we must transition our collective hope for a better Ebonyi into meaningful actions.

"As your biggest fan, I charge and invite you all to actively participate in building a functional leadership system that would believe in and support you, not a governance structure that weaponizes poverty or stifles your momentum as a control mechanism" he stressed.
