2027: Umahi still in charge of Ebonyi politics - LP chieftain, Ezeh By David Uka The Labour Party, LP Candidate for Abakaliki/Izzi Federal Constituency during the 2023 general elections, Dr Ezeh Emmanuel Ezeh has observed that the immediate past Governor of Ebonyi State and current Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi's political value can hardly go unnoticed in the 2027 polls. Ezeh, an Oxford-trained entrepreneur, stated this on his confirmed social media platform, where he congratulated Umahi on his recent award by the Silverbird as the best performing Minister in President Bola Tinubu's cabinet. The LP Chieftain expressed surprise that the few performers in the current administration came from the People's Democratic Party, PDP, and described those in ruling All Progressives Congress, APC as incompetent people without character but have the capacity to build evil and nothing more. His words: "Let me congratulate His Excellency Engr Senator Dave Nweze Umahi on this award as the best-performing minister in Tinubu's cabinet. "Surprisingly, but worthy of note, the few performers in this administration all came from the PDP. APC is totally a party of incompetent people without character, with the capacity to build evil and nothing more. The reason they destroyed everything handed to them in 2015. Nigeria died in 2015 - Simple! "Today in Ebonyi politics, Umahi holds all the four access. Don't mind sycophants milking the governor to deceive you. He is strategic albeit in the negative. He saw the impotence of the older politicians and ran them out. He saw through their greed and hunger and their lack of character and took full advantage. "In 2027, Umahi will still be a force to reckon with unless the current governor makes a sharp turn. "Congratulations, Engr Dave. May this award refocus you to achieve more. "You see - you can't compare my brother Engr Dave Umahi to that loquacious Nyesom Wike. Dave operates from a position of strength and does not fight unprepared battles. If you place Dave in Wike's position, he would have pretentiously crawled or rolled, if possible, to the religious leaders, kneeled for the governor, and made peace while sharpening his knife for the midnight kill. Dave is smart while Wike is abrasive! "Let Wike take lessons from Dave Umahi before it is too late. As for those looking for Umahi's trouble in Ebonyi, it will be unfortunate I HE Gov Nwifuru allows himself to be dragged into any conflict with his former boss. He advised the governor to focus on evidence based governance rather than emotion, stressing that good governance is driven by data."

AE-FETHA reiterates commitments to tackle scourge of Lassa fever as hospital losses fifteen medical health workers The Chief Medical Director of the Alex Ekwueme federal teaching hospital Abakaliki, AE-FETHA, Robinson Chukwudi Onoh has reiterated the preparedness of the hospital to tackle the scourge of Lassa fever and other viral diseases in the South East region and the country at large. The CMD who spoke to newsmen in Abakaliki capital of Ebonyi State, however decried the lost of fifteen medical health workers to Lassa fever between 2005 to date. Onoh who marked his one year in office recently, however applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing him as the Chief medical director of the hospital, adding that the hospital has come of age and can now deliver quality electronic medical recording in full scale. "When I was talking, I said Lassa fever came to our hospital like a big problem, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. When Lassa came to this hospital, that was in 2005, it came in a very bad way because it took away the lives of health care workers here. And the health care workers were the very active and vibrant ones. "Doctors died. Nurses died.Health attendants died and succumbed to Lassa. I think we've lost about 15 health care workers to Lassa in this hospital. And that has brought in a lot of fear in the hospital. "But I want to appreciate partners because during that period, we had support from all the partners, WHO, NCDC, MSF, and even our neighboring institution, Irruwa Special Teaching Hospital. "They all came to help us build capacity in terms of training, in terms of infection prevention and control, and also in terms of treatment. I want to also commend some of our health care workers who also did their best in making sure that those who come down with Lassa are treated. Onoh also enumerated other challenges facing the hospital to include; outrageous billing by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC and lack of basic modern equipment in the hospital. According to him: "The challenges are bound, but the major ones are power.Power has been so epileptic, and the bills that come from EEDC is quite much. You can imagine this hospital, you are asked to pay over N40 million in a month. So that makes it difficult for us to sustain other sections of the hospital when you pay for power. "So power is a very major challenge that we have here. Other challenges we have is, of course, the power, providing diesel and maintaining generators. You notice that when the EEDC, National Grid, is not on, you need to get diesel to run the system. "When these generators break down, you also need to also at the same time repair them. So power is a very big challenge that we have. Other challenges we have include basic modern equipment that we don't have" he said. Onoh also enumerated his administration's achievements within the one year office to include;"we've been able to do things that can be aligned to the initiative of the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, and also Mr. President, and in doing that, this hospital has started electronic medical recording in full scale, meaning that we are going paperless, and we've also been able to bring up areas that are quite innovative. "We've been able to start an IVF center where we've done batches. In our first batch, we had a 70% success rate, so it's one of the areas that I talk about when I want to talk about achievement, because through that, we've been able to give hope to the hopeless, people who have gone far and wide trying to achieve conception, came into this hospital, paid very little, and many of them have triplets to in gestation and single term pregnancies. "So it's also an area we've turned this hospital to a hub for medical tourism, because we have people coming from Cameroon, coming from all parts of the country to access this healthcare. We've been able to improve our clinical services at the same time. Our dialysis center is one of the best in the country. "Our neurosurgeons do great surgeries. We've done about 19 hip replacements and 23 knee replacements in this hospital. We also turned our emergency medicine department into a department that has accreditation for training emergency doctors. "Within my first year in office, we were able to meet the Coordinating Minister Of Health and Social Welfare, alongside with a team from Royal College of Emergency Medicine, on how to advance emergency medicine in Nigeria" he stressed. He further commended the governor of Ebonyi State and his wife, Francis Nwifuru, the minister of works David Umahi, senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, the house of representatives member, Idu Igariwe and other prominent leaders of the state for their contributions towards the progress development going on in the hospital.

Contract scandal rocks Unizik, Acting VC, Prof. Ikechebelu fingered A fresh contract scandal is rocking the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Awka. At the centre of the scandal is the alleged double contract award of a standing contract by the Acting Vice Chancellor (Prof Joseph Ikechebelu) and award of same to another contractor at double the initial price. The contract, awarded in 2024 for the perimeter fencing of the university, is alleged to have been clandestinely cancelled by the Vice Chancellor and re-awarded in early 2025 to another company without following the due process. The situation has necessitated the company initially awarded the contract to write a strongly worded letter to the Vice Chancellor through their legal representatives threatening a lawsuit. Background The University had last year called for tenders from contractors for award of contract for remodelling and reconstruction of the institutions perimeter fence. Messrs Abdullahi Hawawo Construction Co. Ltd., a company with office in Enugu submitted a bid for lot 1 at N180,031,437.50 only. After the bidding process, the Institution in letter dated 25th October 2024 wrote to the company announcing it decision to award the lot 1 contract to it. "I have the pleasure you that the University Tenders Board at its 200 Meeting held on Friday 25th October 2024 approved the award of Contract for the Remodeling and Reconstruction of the Southern Boundary front gate perimeter Fence Lot 1 to your company Messrs Abdullahi Hawawo Construction Co. Ltd. Having the lowest and best evaluated responsive bid at the tender sum of One Hundred and Eighty Million, Thirty-One Thousand Four Hundred and Thirty-Seven Naira Fifty Kobo (N180,031,437.50) only VAT inclusive," The letter signed by one Damian Oduche,Head Procurement Unit, said the Completion Period for the contract shall be Twenty-Five (25) weeks. "You are required to enter into an agreement with the University on the contract. You are also required to confirm your acceptance of this offer of award of contract within seven (7) days of the date of this letter. "While congratulating you on the award this contract, it is necessary to emphasize that the project will be administered based on the conditions of the contract and specifications and you are enjoined/required to use your best endeavours to deliver good quality works", the letter added. The company would quickly write accepting the offer and go ahead to complete all other formalities and agreements with the institution. The company also quickly moved in, cleared the site and moved in some of its equipment preparatory to commencing the work. On 28th October 2025, the company wrote a letter signed by its Director, Robert Udochukwu to the Vice Chancellor demanding for payment of mobilisation. "Following the award of contract for the remodeling and reconstruction of the southern boundary (frontage perimeter fence) Lot 1, we wish to report that site clearing, construction materials and labour mobilization have commenced for the project execution. "Consequently, we humbly request for payment of N54,009,431.25 being 30% of the total contract sum, to be paid to our account details given below" But, the Vice Chancellor after accepting the letter failed to reply to the company. Follow-up communications were also not replied onto for the Vice Chancellor to award the contract to another company, Dukonni Limited early this year. Company issue final warning In a letter to the Vice Chancellor, dated 19th February, the Company through its Lawyers, C I Chukwuma-Ezeudu and Co, threatened to sue the institution for breach of contract and the procurement act. The company in the final warning letter describe the Vice Chancellor 's actions as unlawful; breach of contract, flagrant disregard for due process, and gross violation of contractual obligations. "It has come to our attention, following extensive inquiries that your institution has engaged in a surreptitious, arbitrary, and wholly unlawful course of action by unilaterally terminating our Client's subsisting contract and reassigning it to an unauthorized third party Dukonni Nig. Ltd. "This brazen and egregious misconduct not only constitutes a fundamental breach of contract but also raises serious concerns regarding the integrity, transparency, and legality of your institution's contractual engagements" The company Lawyers noted that the company was duly awarded the contract for the remodelling and reconstruction of the southern boundary (frontage) perimeter fence - Lot 1 by your institution. "As a responsible contractor, our Client promptly mobilized to the designated project site, carried out the requisite site clearing, and proceeded with procurement of materials, labour deployment, and other preparatory measures to ensure the successful execution of the project in accordance with agreed specifications The Lawyers noted that in adherence to standard contractual practice and industry regulations, 'our client, through its letter dated 28th October 2024, formally requested the release of 30% of the total Contract sum, amounting to N54,009,431.25. as mobilization funds to facilitate efficient commencement of work'. "This request was not only lawful but also necessary, as it is an integral component of contractual execution but to our Client's utter shock and dismay, its formal request was met with unwarranted silence from your institution. "No response was issued, no explanation was given, and no action was taken to fulfill the financial obligation owed to our Client. "Rather than engaging in professional communication as required by the principles of fair dealing, good faith, and contractual integrity, your institution chose to ignore our Client's lawful demand while clandestinely proceeding to illegally terminate the contract and reallocate the project to a third party. Unauthorized entry and breach of contract The company further noted that in furtherance of its diligent monitoring of project developments, it made a shocking discovery that excavation work had commenced on the project site, but by individuals and entities other than itself and its duly authorized personnel. "Upon conducting due diligence, our Client confirmed that your institution had secretly and illegally reallocated the contract to Dukonni Nig. Grave legal implications The company's lawyers warned that the institution's actions are unlawful, unethical, and grossly prejudicial to the company's vested rights. "The law is clear: A contract legally awarded cannot be unilaterally revoked, reallocated, or assigned to a third party without due process, formal notice, and adherence to contractual termination procedures. "Your institution lacks the authority to arbitrarily displace our Client without. legal justification. "Any purported termination or reassignment of the project is manifestly null, void, and of no legal consequence", it said Continuing it noted that "the failure to release the mobilization fund constitutes a material breach of contract, which has not only impeded our Client's ability to proceed with the project but also inflicted significant financial and reputational damages on our Client. "We are compelled to view this unlawful conduct as deliberate, calculated, and executed with the intent to frustrate and sabotage our Client's legitimate business interests. "This is not merely a breach of contract it is an act of contractual sabotage, financial subversion, and reckless disregard for legal obligations", The Company though it's Lawyers therefore gave the Institution seven days to pay Mobilization Fund in accordance with the original contractual terms. And restore the company the project to the company " All unauthorized works currently being executed by Dukonni Nig. Ltd. Or any other party must cease immediately, and our Client must be reinstated to its rightful position as the contractor for the project. The company warned that if the demands are not met it will be left with no choice but to institute immediate legal proceedings against your institution. "Our Client shall seek the following without hesitation: a court injunction restraining any further work on the site by unauthorized parties, a declaration that the purported termination and reassignment of the contract is null, void, and of no effect whatsoever. "An order for full contractual enforcement, compelling your institution to honour its obligations in full and a claim for substantial damages for breach of contract, financial losses, and reputational harm suffered by our Client. It also warned that it will write a formal petition to relevant regulatory bodies and anti-corruption agencies to investigate the legality and propriety of your institution's conduct in the matter. "Let this letter serve as your institution's last and only opportunity to rectify this serious contractual violation before we escalate this matter through legal channels. "We strongly, urge you to act with utmost urgency and restore compliance with the dictates of the law. The legal consequences of continued non-compliance will be swift, severe, and inescapable. "The responsibility to avoid such legal entanglements rests solely on your institution. Any further act of defiance shall be met with the full force of the law. Mrs Nwifuru flags off Eye Center at David Umahi University, DUFUHS By Uka Dave Wife of Ebonyi State governor, Chief Mrs Uzoamaka Nwifuru has flagged off the operations of the Ultra-modern Eye Centre in David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, DUFUHS, Uburu in Ohaozara LGA of the state. Speaking during the flag off , Mrs Nwifuru who described health care services as the bedrock of a sound society disclosed that her pet project, Better Health for Rural Children, Women and Internally Displaced Persons BERWO Foundation, worked in collaboration with the DUFUHS management team to facilitate the establishment of the eye centre. The first lady commended her husband, Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State, whom she said his administration's health-desired spirit has been attracting essential investments and quality services in the health sector. While commending the former Governor of the state, Senator David Umahi, who founded the university, Mrs Nwifuru said the Eye Ultra-modern Centre would serve as a symbol of the Ebonyi people's desire for quality health care in the state and in the country in general. In his address, the University Vice Chancellor, Professor Jesse Uneke described the Eye Centre as a state-of-the-art of excellence for research, training, and patient care not only in the Southeast but the entire country. He commended the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFUND and Ebonyi State government for their support in establishing the centre, saying it would be operating with a multi-disciplinary of experts specializing in conducting research and training on eye eye-related-issues and caring for people with eye disease. He disclosed that eye conditions have become remarkably common as in his words, those who live long enough would experience at least one eye condition during their lifetime. He explained: "According to the World Health Organization, globally, at least one billion people have a near or distance vision impairment that could have been prevented or has yet to be addressed. "In the absence of timely detection, reduced or absent eyesight can have long-term and economic effects. Vision impairment affects people of all ages, with the majority being over the age of 50. Young children with early onset severe vision impairment can experience lower levels of educational achievement, and in adults, it often affects the quality of life through lower productivity, decreased workforce participation and high rates of depression. "Vision impairment and blindness impact the life of people anywhere. In low and mid-middle-income countries, including Nigeria, the burden of vision impairment can be even greater due to fewer opportunities to access essential eye care services. Cataracts and uncorrected refractive errors are estimated to be the leading causes of vision impairment; however, other causes for vision impairment cannot be ignored. "Age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, long-standing systemic conditions like diabetes causing diabetic retinopathy, infectious diseases of the eye and trauma to the eye are all equally important causes of vision that need to be addressed. "In Nigeria, an estimated 24 million people have sight loss. The Nigeria national blindness and visual impairment survey estimates that 4.2 per cent of people over 40 years old are blind. It was also estimated that 4.25 per cent million adults aged 40 years and above have moderate to severe impairment or blindness." He revealed that blindness was associated with increasing age, being female and poor literacy, noting that a report has it that 84 per cent of blindness was due to avoidable causes, as "many people in Nigeria are unable to access basic eye care, living in increased risk of visual impairment and disability." He stated that DUFUHS Centre would render different essential services, including research and development in eye diseases, diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, training of medical and allied health sciences students, the abolishment of mobile eye care units (MECUs), embarking on community outreach and enlargement programmes. Other roles to be rendered by the centre, according to the Vice Chancellor, incinclud capacity building and training, collaboration and partnership building and hosting of conferences, the establishment of financial assistance programmes (FAPs), counselling and provision of psycho-social support, provision of consultancy services by experienced ophthalmologists, optometrists and biomedical engineers; telemedicine and teleophthalmology, the establishment of the international journal of eye research and other essential dissemination channels. The University Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, expressed joy over the successful flag-off of the eye centre and assured that the federal government would put much efforts into taking the institution to greater heights. The First Lady was later conducted around the facilities of the center and was the first person to be examined in the center.
