PoliticsAli Odefa No Longer Member Of PDP, Has No Legal Standing To Convene Zonal Meetin by DavidUkah01(op): 7:42pm On May 17, 2025
Ali Odefa No Longer Member of PDP, Has No Legal Standing to Convene Zonal Meeting – Southeast PDP Chairman, Egwu

The National Vice Chairman (NVC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), South East Zone, Hon. Chidiebere Goodluck Egwu, has called on the party members, and general public to completely disregard any claims or activities anchored by the expelled former South East zonal chairman of the party, Chief Ali Odefa as the later was no longer a member of the party.

Hon. Egwu made this declaration on Friday, May 16, 2025, during the commencement of his zonal familiarization tour of the five states of the South East, which commenced with Imo State.

The new zonal chairman who was accompanied by other zonal officers including the Zonal Legal Adviser, Barr. Ukkpai Ukairo, Zonal Organising Secretary Hon. Mike Ahumibe among many others were welcomed at the Imo State PDP Secretariat, Owerri by all the State Working Committee Members led by the Imo State Chairman of the party, Rt. Hon. Austin Nwachukwu.

The welcome party also included and all LGA Chairmen of the party led by their chairman of PDP Ohaji/Egbema Chief Emeka Chukwu.

In his welcome remarks, the Imo State PDP Chairman, Rt. Hon. Austin Nwachukwu thanked party executives for their swift response to the meeting despite short notice, commending their loyalty to the PDP. He condemned divisive actions within the party, particularly those allegedly orchestrated by the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, whom he accused of undermining the National Secretary of the party, Senator Samuel Anyanwu by continuously enabling the expelled former zonal chairman of the party to Chief Ali Odefa who seem to be determined to destabilize the party in the zone.
In his address to party members, the new National Vice Chairman, Hon. Egwu urged the party faithful and the Nigerian public to completely ignore Ali Odefa, reiterating that Odefa’s purported authority has no legal or party standing. Substantiating his stance, Hon. Egwu presented several court judgements that affirmed the expulsion of Ali Odefa from the PDP as well as key judgments that nullified the kangaroo congress that Odefa claimed returned him as National Vice Chairman of the PDP South East.

Hon Egwu stated, “Let it be known far and wide Ali Odefa is no longer a member of this party. Any dealings with him in the name of PDP are null and void. I urge everyone to disregard his claims and respect the rule of law.”

The zonal chairman stated that issues surrounding Ali Odefa’s membership of the PDP was laid to rest on February 26, 2025 by Honourable Justice Hilary I. O. Oshomah in the judgment deliuvered on Suit no: FHC/AI/CS/227/2024 which affirmed the expulsion of Chief Ali Odefa from the PDP. In order five of the judgement, the court granted “an Order of perpetual injunction retraining the 1st Defendant (Ali Odefa) from parading himself as a member of the Peoples Democratic Partyand /or as the National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party for the South East zone of Nigeria and from continuing t perform the roles or exercise the powers accorded to the National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party for the South East zone of Nigeria.”

According to Egwu, it is also important for party members to know that “the court also restrained both the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from dealing or recognizing Ali Odefa as a member of the PDP.”

He said that in suit No: FHC/AI/CS/2/2025 the court affirmed Hon. Chidiebere Goodluck Egwu as the substantive National Chairman of the PDP, South East Zone.

On the purported zonal congress that Chief Ali Odefa claimed returned him as the National Vice Chairman, Hon Egwu told party members that in addition to an FCT High Court Order in Suit No: FCT/HC/CV/325/2025 which barred the PDP and INEC from conducting the congress. Additionally, Hon. Egwu disclosed that an Enugu High Court which was earlier deceived by Chief Odefa also struck out and earlier order errornously granted Odefa in Suit No: E/132/2025 thereby invalidating Ali Odefa’s claims to the seat of the zonal chairman of the PDP.
Assuring party members of inclusive leadership, Hon. Egwu pledged to engage all stakeholders constructively and work closely with the national leadership, especially the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, the PDP Reformation Committee Chairman, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki; and the PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu to ensure that members of the party in the zone come together to reorganize the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Also, in his remarks, Sout East Zonal Organising Secretary Chief Mike Ahumbe stated that that Chief Ali Odefa has continued to flout multiple court rulings that barred him from posing as the PDP Vice Chairman for the zone. He criticized Governor Mbah’s open endorsement of Odefa, calling it a blatant disregard for the rule of law.

Chief Ahumibe, however, expressed happiness with the emergence of Hon. Egwu as the zonal chairman stating that “the PDP is back. We are rebuilding stronger and more united than ever. The wave of revival is sweeping through the region and across Nigeria.”

In his own remarks, the Zonal Legal Adviser informed party members that due to the subsisting judgments affirming the expulsion of Ali Odefa from PDP as well as the court order stopping the illegal congress Chief Odefa had planned, the INEC after reviewing subsisting judgments boycotted the illegal congress.

He reiterated the position of the Zonal Working Committee of the party to galvanise the members in all the five South East states. He revealed that the next state for the familiarization visit is Abia State.

PoliticsTraditional ruler lauds Gov Nwifuru for flagging off construction of 5-span bri by DavidUkah01(op):
Traditional ruler lauds Gov Nwifuru for flagging off construction of 5-span bridge linking Ebonyi, Benue

The Traditional Ruler representing Izzi Local Government Area in Lagos, Cyprian Nwekee has lauded Governor Francis Nwifuru for flagging the construction of a 5-span Enyim bridge in Enyim community, Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Nwekee, while speaking with journalists in his Iziogo community, Izzi Local Government Area of the state, shortly after the flaged-off said the construction of the bridge which is the boundary between the people of Enyim(Ebonyi) and Oju(Benue) which has claimed many lives, will save lives and enhance the economic ties between the two states.

He described Enyim and Oju as agricultural areas with lots of agricultural products and that the bridge has affected the evacuation of the products and commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for taking the bull by the horn to construct the bridge

The monarch also said that the routes of Enyim and Oju will be easy access to Abuja and other North central States after the construction of the bridge.

"When we began the journey of advocating for the construction of the bridge project to link the Enyim people of Izzi Local Government Area in Ebonyi State with our brothers and sisters in Benue State three years ago, we believed it would become a project of great significance—one that our people would appreciate and benefit from for generations.

"My spirit has long held the conviction that the governorship seat of Ebonyi State would come to our place, Izzi. In 2016, I shared this vision with our current Governor, His Excellency Rt. Hon. (Builder) Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, when he was then serving as Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly. He laughed, not out of mockery, but out of disbelief that such a prophecy could come to pass. But today, we are witnessing the reality of that divine revelation.

"The journey to this moment was not easy. As a traditional ruler—not a politician—representing the Izzi people in Ohanaeze Ndigbo, I pursued this vision with dedication and patience. In fact, as recently as yesterday, I was scheduled to be in Gambia to join our Ohanaeze President in the coronation of an illustrious Igbo son. However, I had to forgo that international commitment because of the importance of this bridge project. That alone speaks volumes about how dear it is to my heart.

"The flag-off of the Enyim River Bridge, a 5-span structure linking Ebonyi to Benue, is one of the greatest achievements of Governor Nwifuru's administration. This project connects the Salt of the Nation with the Food Basket of the Nation. Upon completion, it will enhance trade, ease transportation, and strengthen intercommunal ties between our two states.

"Historically, Abakaliki was the first developed Wawa-speaking area, followed by Iziogo - the location of my palace. However, due to poor road infrastructure, the flow of agricultural produce into Abakaliki town has been hindered. Without food supply from rural hubs like ours, even residents of the state capital risk facing scarcity.

"By God's grace, Ebonyi State is now led by a humanitarian governor whose passion for community development often keeps him awake at night. Governor Nwifuru is a blessing—not only to Ebonyi, but to Nigeria at large. This bridge project will allow someone like me to drive from my village to Abuja in just a few hours. That is development.

"Enyim community people are known for their farming prowess. Our land is richly fertile, and we produce yam, rice, garri, and fruits in abundance. Yet without critical infrastructure—roads, bridges, and transport systems—our farmers struggle to get their produce to urban markets where it is most needed. This project will unlock that potential.

"I personally appealed to the Governor to construct the road leading to the river. I wanted our community to have accessible routes to urban centers. With this infrastructure, traders and investors can visit our markets, boosting economic growth and creating opportunities for our people.

"Iziogo Market, once a major hub, is now bouncing back, thanks to this renewed development drive. A tunnel project is also planned, further signaling the return of prosperity to this peaceful, environmentally-friendly region—far from the pollution of urban centers.

,"The people of Benue are even more excited about this project than we are. During my late mother’s funeral, they came in large numbers with cultural troupes, yams, and gifts, showing their joy and support for this initiative. Their presence at the flag-off event also demonstrated their deep appreciation", he said.

PoliticsGov Nwifuru Has Completed Several Projects, Ebonyi Govt Needs Time To Do More Sa by DavidUkah01(op): 9:25pm On May 06, 2025
Gov Nwifuru has completed several projects, Ebonyi govt needs time to do more says Works Commissioner

The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Works, Engr. Stanley Lebechi Mbam has said the State government under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has completed a number of road projects in the urban and rural parts of the State alongside other infrastructural projects within the last two years, contrary to claims in some quarters without borrowing a dime.

Speaking through Zoom at the fourth edition of Nkata Oganihu Ebonyi- a platform for public discourse and conversation on issues of governance and administration in Ebonyi State moderated by a Public Health Expert, Dr. Laz Ude Eze, Mbam said Nwifuru has kept faith with line 17 of his campaign promise on his 'People’s Charter of Needs' agenda wherein he pledged to maintain existing infrastructures and expand rural and urban roads.

“When we came on board, we tried to intervene in the urban capital city because most of our roads were dilapidated and road users found them difficult. We were able maintain them under phase 1 of the project which included Aloh Street, Ofor Street, Unity Square axis, Goddy Ogbaga Avenue and we expanded the city by extending it to Mile 50 axis where we sprang forth a new layout and many roads have been constructed there.

You can see the massive development that has been going on there because of the access roads created in that axis and other parts of the State capital. We didn’t stop there. On the rural roads, we have also done much but much more are yet to be done. In the Central axis of the State, Ishielu Local Government to be precise, we have about 22km rural road that was completely impassable. But when we came on board, we started the road and today, the earthwork is about 90% completion and the concrete pavement is going on well. Also in the Central we have some bridges going on there. One is at Umuezeokoha and another is Akadoro bridge in the same Ezza North Local Government Area. In Ikwo, we also have a 13km Odomowo road that is ongoing now and is making a very big progress.

Another road project going in the Central zone is the Ezillo road in Ishielu Local Government Area. The 9.11km road is under my ministry and it is making a very good progress.

Although some of the contractors handling some of the projects delayed in mobilization to site but as I speak to you, they are about to be commissioned once the internal roads are completed. On the Governor's promise to build houses for traditional rulers, that was part of his campaign promises and very soon, it will be completed. The construction of classroom blocks are all going on in our various communities in the various local government areas. Some are at the finishing stages while others are nearing completion.

In the Southern part of the State, we have some rural roads that are ongoing now. In Okposi, we have a 12.12km road that is ongoing under my ministry, another road project at Uburu- a road leading from DUFUTH is also going on. Some roads are also going on in Afikpo under the Ministry of Infrastructure. In Ishiagu, there is a road and a 2-span bridge leading to Enugu that is going on there under my ministry.

In the North, we have a 23km Umuoguduoshia-Nigercem road that is ongoing connecting through Nkalaha. That job is going on as I speak In Abakaliki, we have over 11km road apart from the internal roads in the capital city. There are many roads also going on from Ogbaga road to Nwofe (in Izzi Local Government Area), Odomoke, Ogudueshi road and many others”, the Commissioner disclosed adding that the construction of a low lift at Water works road in the Abakaliki capital city is part of the government's efforts towards addressing water challenges in the urban City which he said is already bearing fruits.

On the Vanco flyover project, the Commissioner who described it as one of its kinds in the South-East revealed the flyover will have a tunnel. According to Mbam, “We have not had such a project in the South East before and a lot has been done. I won’t want to bore you with so much details but I beg that each one of you should make time to visit the site. The tunnel is about 1km and the bridge is about 28 Span, twin flyover and a dual carriage-way and other ancillary works that is going on there.”

Reacting to the allegations that the Vanco flyover is not moving at a fast pace, the Commissioner said people can only complain about the pace because they don’t have the design of the job. “Information is key, sometimes we talk about the project and we know a lot is going on and we know we will get it right”.

While calling on Ebonyians to be patient with the Nwifuru administration, Mbam said the government has made gigantic progress in execution of fiscal infrastructure projects without borrowing any funds from anywhere.

Reacting to the Commissioner’s submissions, a former two-term member of Ebonyi State House of Assembly and former Commissioner for Special Projects, Rt. Hon. Ikechukwu Nwobo lamented that many infrastructure projects in the State are not moving speedily, calling on the government to hold contractors duly accountable so they deliver projects on quality time. “Remember that the governor came out sometime ago to say he gave out 308 projects to people across the State and today, we don’t know whom to blame whether the government or the contractors who are not being held accountable. The Commissioner has to address the mode of awarding contracts and the direct labours under what is called joint-responsibility.”

He said the Vanco flyover is not necessary at the moment especially considering the economic situation of the country at the moment. “This one the government is doing now (the Vanco flyover) is what is called negative development – more than 50 houses and more than 2000 businesses will be affected. Imagine when you take this from Vanco to Ojeowerre or from there to Rice Mill road, you must have evacuated Ebonyi like debris. This is what is called negative development in Developmental Law”, Nwobo decried.

Also reacting, the Convener and Moderator of Nkata Oganihu Ebonyi, Dr. Laz Ude Eze urged the Ebonyi State government to learn to communicate better its policies and programmes for a better Ebonyi State.

Organized Labour lauds Nwifuru for clearing 18 years pensions, gratuities, Makes Fresh Demands

The organized Labour in Ebonyi State, has commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for clearing entitlements of retired workers in the state from 1996 till date.

This was even as they reeled out many challenges facing workers in the State and called for the Governor's immediate intervention.

This was contained in the May Day address presented by Comrade Ogugua Egwu, Chairman of NLC in the State,on behalf of the Organized Labour at Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, Abakaliki.

"Your Excellency Sir, some of these plights include: Transportation challenges (Provision of more CNG Buses for workers)Housing challenge (provision of more housing estates for workers).

"Increasing the pension of Retirees as is obtainable in other parts of the country. Equipping Government offices in the Centenary city Reinstatement of the bulk release of Leave allowance in line with the realities of the New National Minimum wage, 2024.

"Reinstating the full salary of staff of the Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo. An additional monthly release of twenty-five million naira only would solve this problem.

"Your Excellency Sir, these issues we believe can be handled with your touch of Midas. And Sir, we use this medium to thank you for directing the immediate recall to work at Ebonyi State University (EBSU), of Comrade Ikechuku Igwenyi and Co after three (3) years of suffering unjust suspension from work for union activities.

"This noble gesture of yours will remain golden in our hearts. We also thank you immensely for granting our request for the cost implication of consequential adjustment with substantial progression to be included in the 2025 Budget. We believe it is a mark of your goodwilled desire for implementation. It is a gesture we shall never forget as Organised Labour.

"Sir, all we desire as your children, as your people, is for you to keep granting us that cordiality of being in the Civic Space of our dear state by providing an avenue for constant and periodic interface and engagement to enable a firsthand feel of the pulse of Ebonyi Workers," the organized Labour said.

He opined that the Governor has given the state enviable face lift through his Peoples Charter of Needs mantra;

"A man who expressed the need for a robust engagement during periods of labour disputes, thereby allowing the Working class to have a voice in the civic space; A man who has appointed unionists and technocrats into his cabinet; A man who feels the pains and anxieties of Ebonyi Workers;

"They said he is unshakable but indeed, his soft heart yearns to touch humanity and that’s why we describe him as the most humanistic Governor of our time. He has done so much that we must question “What he is yet to do for us?” Is it the payment of gratuity to abandoned Retirees spanning the period of almost 18 years; is it the implementation of the New national minimum wage?

"Is it the provision of the toll-free buses to convey workers to work? Is the construction of housing units for public and civil servants? Is it the foreign and local Postgraduate scholarships for Ebonyians? Is it the Christmas bonuses that create the loudest bang of credit alerts for workers? Where do we stop?"

The Organized Labour assured the Governor that it would continue it be partners in the process of enthroning the rights of workers and ensuring that the Civic Space in the state and Nigeria as a whole, will be engaging and progressive for all.

Responding, the Governor expressed his administration's readiness to address the challenges facing the workers in the State, noting that the government and the leadership of workers would sit down to tackle the challenges. END//

PoliticsI Will Not Quit Politics For My Rivals, Says Ex- Ebonyi Lawmaker by DavidUkah01(op): 6:49pm On Apr 28, 2025
I will not quit politics for my rivals,
says Ex- Ebonyi lawmaker

A former Chairman of Edda Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, Dr. Eni Uduma Chima who contested for House of Representatives for two times, has vowed not to retire from politics for his political rivals.

Chima said he will keep contesting for House of Representatives until he wins the position.

The former House of Assembly member contested for House of Representatives in 2015 under Labour Party and 2019 under All Progressives Congress (APC) and lost the candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Iduma Igariwey who has been in the position for over 10 years.

Speaking in his Ekoli Edda, Edda Local Government hometown at the weekend during the Thanksgiving service of the 51 members of the community who were granted amnesty by Governor Francis Nwifuru in the crisis between the community and neighboring Cross River which led to loss of many lives with properties worth billions of naira destroyed, Chima opined that anyone in the community who believes that he would be dwarfed politically, should have a change of heart

There was attempt to disrupt the event which was held at Egbebu playground in the community when suspected political thugs stormed the venue and dismantled the canopies mounted for the event.

The thugs also scattered plastic chairs arranged for the event and spoiled the decorations.

Chima who described the thugs as supporters of his political rivals in the community, vowed to run for the House of Representatives position in 2027 general elections and that he owes them no apology for his declaration.

The Board Chairman of the state Fertilizer and Chemical Company, said some members of the community have been seeing him as a threat and have been doing everything to diminish him politically because of the love and overwhelming support the people have for him and that he will not quit politics for such persons who are not on ground in the community.

He commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for granting amnesty to the 51 members of the community that served as vigilante to protect the area when the people of Cross River State were killing the Ekoli people.

"Those that wanted to disrupt the Thanksgiving service our people held to appreciate God for what he used our dear Governor to do for them, are used by political opposition within the community.

"All of them are members of a political group and the funny thing is that they constitute about 5% of the entire community. They don't have capacity to do anything.

"They came to disrupt the program. They dismantled the canopies, scattered the chairs, spoiled the decorations but in honour of the words I gave to the law enforcement agencies that there won't be any problem, we talked to our people and it was resolved and we have forgiven them.

"I'm contesting for House of Representatives in 2027. I am eminently qualified, sufficiently experienced and I am owing nobody apology. The people are with me, I will keep contesting until I will and I will continue to be law abiding in the aspiration.

We will take the support for the governor for granted. We gave him the biggest votes in the last election. In 2023 general election, the governor got over 14,000 votes in Edda Local Government Area and this community alone gave him over 9,000 and that's the annoyance of most politicians here.

"They are breeding internal infractions to make sure they distract us and to make sure that feet is not achievable again.

"In 2019, the whole local government gave over 20,000 votes for me and this community alone gave over 23,000 votes to the governor.

"So, it is something these politicians are not happy with and they are doing everything possible to distract the internal peace so that that feet will not be feasible again but by the grace of God, we have succeeded in resisting them.

"So far, so good. The community has come back to life and it is bubbling", he said.

A member of traditional council in the community, Etta Egon, warned trouble makers in the community to desist from their actions.

He said the trouble makers will regret their actions if the continue to distract the peace of the community.

CrimeEbonyi Community Raises Alarm Over Alleged Killings Of Edda People By Suspected by DavidUkah01(op):
Ebonyi community raises alarm over alleged killings of Edda people by suspected Amasiri warlords

The people of Idima Autonomous Community in Edda LGA of Ebonyi State have raised alarm over the constant attack and killing of their people by suspected warlords from Amasiri in Afikpo LGA.

Addressing journalists in Abakaliki, the President General of Idima Edda Community, Comrade Nkama Okoro Agha said in the latest attack, six people including a pregnant woman and her little child were brutally murdered and valuable properties worth millions of Naira destroyed by the suspected attackers from Amasiri.

Agha recalled that one of the 6 victims of the alleged Amasiri's attack against the Okporojo people hailed from Afikpo, identified his name as Abagha Chukwu from Ukpa in Afikpo LGA, but was a resident of Okporojo till his untimely death.

The Idima President General who condemned the ugly act alleged that this attack was not the first, saying that the Amasiri people had invaded Okporojo and killed innocent citizens, including the abduction of farmers in their farms on 6th February 2023.

He appealed to Governor Francis Nwifuru to urgently intervene to prevent further killings and bring the perpetrators of this heinous act to book.

He equally appealed to the governor to take urgent action over the land dispute between the people of Ndukwe community, Amasiri in Afikpo LGA and Okporojo Idima in Edda LGA of Ebonyi State, to bring lasting peace in the area.

He said: "We the people of Okporojo in Idima Autonomous Community in Edda LGA of Ebonyi State totally condemned this unfortunate attack launched by the Amasiri against our people.

"This attack which consumed the lives of our people, the Okporojo innocent citizens including a pregnant woman and her little child, and even a resident in our community who came from Ukpa in Afikpo LGA were murdered by the Amasiri warlords last Saturday 5th April 2025.

"As this seemed to be not enough, the Amasiri militias have continued to launch attacks, destroying property worth millions of Naira in the Okporojo community just because of the land dispute.

"Remember that on the 6th of February 2023, the people of Amasiri invaded Okporojo and abducted our harmless people including Oko Agwu Ama, Dick Ama Oduko, and David Oko Arusi who were working and searching for their green pastures in their farms and up till date, we have not seen them returned home, we don't know whether they are still alive or dead."

"After the abduction, the Amasiri militias came to Okporojo Edda village, started destroying our properties and even beheaded one Chima Orji in our village. The said Chima Orji was buried without his head after his death as a result of the unfortunate invasion launched by the Amasiri world lords against our people.

"On this note, we appeal to Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State to urgently swing into action to stop this attack against our people, by ensuring issues lingering on the disputing land are being settled to save the lives and properties of innocent citizens.

"We, are not comfortable with the way the Amasiri militias have been engaged by their sponsors to destroy lives and properties of our people since 2023. We are toeing the lines of peace because of the bold steps so far you have taken as a governor to ensure Ebonyi is a crisis-free state since the assumption of your office."

Lending his voice, the Chairman of Okporojo Development Union, Hon Imo Samuel Oduko said the land in dispute belongs to Okporojo, Idima Edda community, stressing that, his people have been living there before Amasiri people were hired by our forefathers to work for them, and set traps in their farms, through which they continued settling within the area.

"The disputable land is our land, which we inherited from our forefathers. We are surprised that our forefathers, the original landlords of the land in dispute, during their lifetime hired Amasiri people to work for them and set animal traps in their farms but now, our hired workers and tenants have turned to fight against us, the landlords.

"We are calling the Ebonyi State governor, Chief Francis Nwifuru and other relevant authorities to come to our aid because these Amasiri warlords have continued to launch deathly attacks on our people and this is not acceptable," he stated.

Oduko said the claims by Ndukwe Amasiri people in some quarters, that Okporojo Edda people had waged a reprisal attack on their community were a mere fabrication, and insisted that the Okporojo people had never involved themselves in abduction, destruction of lives and properties in the area.

Ex-Minister Ekumankama Celebrates Mother on Her 75th Birthday

Former Minister of State Health Barr Joseph Ekumankama and his siblings have celebrated their mother, Elder Mrs Grace Ekumankama, on her 75th birthday.

A special thanksgiving service was held in her honour at the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Abakaliki, while the reception was held at A Real Exclusive Palace in Abakaliki.

It was indeed a beautiful and intimate moment for the family as they ensured that their mother was surrounded by her beloved children, grandchildren and family members.

Speaking with journalists, Ekumankama described his mother as a wonderful woman with high moral standards.

Extolling the virtues of his mother, the former minister acknowledged the remarkable roles she had played in instilling good virtues in him and his siblings, saying that her good home bringing has helped them become impactful to the society.

"She is a wonderful woman; you can attest to the testimonies from her grandchildren. For a grandchild to know that the discipline, the culture, and the moral values that the parents are instilling in them are by virtue of the good moral values that their parents also instilled in them is to tell you the quality and the character of the woman that she is." Ekumankama said.

The ex-minister used the occasion to charge parents to instil good virtues in their children as they grow up in order to have a safe society.

He emphasised the need for Christian mothers to ensure they instil good Christian values in their children and build a character that would avoid any form of criminality and create insecurity in the society.

"The problem we have today in Nigerian society is the lack of good Christian upbringing; if you train a child in the ways of the Lord, he will grow up to become an impactful person in society, a man or a woman that will be devoid of all social vices.

"But what we have here today is people don't value life again. You can see the level of banditry, kidnappings, stealing, and armed robbery; these social vices are a result of poor home bringing. If you bring up a child in the fear of God, that child, even if he's poor, will fear evil and abhor things that are evil in the society.

"We have a scenario whereby, because of the way parents are bringing up their children, not giving attention to character, virtues, and moral values that should be instilled in the child, we are having these challenges." He added.

Meanwhile, he equally used the moment to wish her God's protection and preservation and prayed for longevity to enable her to enjoy the fruit of her children and grandchildren as well as thanked God for keeping her alive.

"I wish that God will keep her alive to also see the wonderful grandchildren that God has given to her to grow successful, which is a wish for every parent. I wish her good health and life, and that God will keep her, preserve her and give her good health." He prayed.

Earlier on, the members of the Mezie Edda Grassroots Movement for FON, led by its organising secretary, Hon. Patrick Okoro, extended their heartfelt congratulations to her, describing her attributes as worthy of emulation by every mother.

The group expressed deep appreciation for her unwavering commitment to the Ekumankama's royal family of Amangwu Edda, the church and the community, highlighting her significant role in elevating their family’s status as Ugoeze.

Ebonyi: Doctors seek speedy resolution in DUFUTH Crises

Concerned Medical Health Practitioners from the Old Ohaozara block have called on the Federal Government to intervene in the crisis rocking the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH).

The Medics Under the Old Ohaozara Medical and Dental Consultants Forum made the call in a statement on Friday in Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi state.

The statement was signed by the Forum's President, Dr Kenneth Okoro and Secretary, Dr Mcsteve Okeke.

The Hospital have been involved in a crisis following last week's protest by some members of the host community, Uburu in Ohaozara local government area of the state against the Hospital 's Chief Medical Director(CMD), Prof Uzoma Agwu.

A few days after the protest, the staff of the Hospital staged another protest in support of the embattled CMD but were threatened by community leaders and youths.

As a result, Resident Doctors of the Hospital threatened to down tools if the crisis is not resolved.

Governor Francis Nwifuru and Minister of Works and Founder of the Hospital, David Umahi who is also from the community last week waded into the crisis.

But the Old Ohaozara Medical Consultants Forum in a statement noted with extreme dismay the rumblings in the hospital.

According to them, the rumblings should not be happening in the hospital which they claimed is the most beautiful and best equipped public hospital in Nigeria .

They alleged that the major cause of the bickering is the unhealthy
relationship/rivalry between the Vice - Chancellor of David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences ( DUFUHS ) Uburu , Prof. Jesse Uneke and the Chief Medical Director of DUFUTH , Prof. Mrs Uzoma Agwu.

The Doctors said the duos disagreement is is as a result of their discordant understanding of which of the two federal institutions should take charge of clinical service departments /Centres/units.

"We are also informed that the Vice - Chancellor wishes to be
allowed to play a supervisory role over the Teaching hospital , an aberration of the highest order.

'Worldwide , clinical service departments / centres / units are managed by Teaching Hospitals . Cancer , Renal and Eye Centres are under clinical services of any hospital. DUFUTH should not be an exception", they claimed

The Forum also noted that in Nigeria , the University is supervised by the Ministry of Education while the Teaching Hospital is supervised by the ministry of health .

"We are surprised that the healthy collaborative relationship for medical education which exists in all other institutions in Nigeria is lacking between DUFUHS and
DUFUTH .

"The two agencies / institutions of government are autonomous with the University led by a Governing Council and the Teaching Hospital led by a Board of Management . None should play a
supervisory role over the other ; their service mandates are separate but complementary", they said.

They regretted that the climax of the unhealthy scenario in DUFUTH is the recent orchestrated protest by natives in the hospital leading to the relocation of the venue for interview of prospective staff to Abakaliki with all the undesired implications.

The Forum regretted that as a result of the crisis, their colleagues working in DUFUTH have become demoralized and are now considering other options for their services.

"We observe that at a period when Nigeria's health sector has witnessed unprecedented exodus of healthcare professionals, it is counterproductive to demoralize the patriotic ones who chose to serve their fatherland.

"As indigenes of Old Ohaozara Division and professional stakeholders in DUFUTH, we are worried by the potential negative impact of the unease at the hospital on service delivery, medical education and research against the background of the lofty vision of its establishment to reverse medical tourism to the benefit of Nigeria.

"The peculiarities of DUFUTH as a potential centre of excellence with state of the art facilities located almost equidistant between two other prominent Teaching Hospitals requires the collective support of the host community, the government and all stakeholders to actualize the vision", they said. .

They commended the Minister of Works, David Umahi and Governor Francis Nwifuru for wading into the matter.

They however called for the immediate intervention of the supervising federal ministries of education and health to clearly delineate the service mandates of the two federal institutions and facilitate a memorandum of understanding between the University and the Teaching Hospital.

"They also called for the donation of shuttle buses to ply designated routes to convey only patients at free or heavily subsidized fares to and from DUFUTH, given the paucity of public transport services in the area.

This, they said, will remarkably improve patronage of the hospital in view of the location.

They called on DUFUTH management to intensify the ongoing medical outreaches for care of patients and sensitization of the public on available services in the hospital.

The Forum also charged the Management to also ensure that Staff performs their duties efficiently and effectively in a conducive working environment.

They also urged stakeholders to embrace the counsel/admonition of their leaders to incline to the growth and excellent development of the hospital in a peaceful conducive environment. Ends

HND/BSC dichotomy threat to Polytechnic Education --- Rector Akapoly

The Rector of Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwanna, Afikpo in Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State Dr. Felix Attah has described continuing
dichotomy between university and polytechnic graduates and certificates issued to them as the most challenging issue in the polytechnic sector in the country.

He said despite federal government pronouncements abrogating the dichotomy, it has has persisted and become a very big problem in the education system, causing low student enrollment in the polytechnic sector.

Attah stated this during the 44th matriculation ceremony of the polytechnic.

A total of 1,248 National Diploma and 1,249 Higher National Diploma and 27 part-time students were matriculated by the polytechnic.

Attah called for an end to the university and polytechnic graduates dichotomy to encourage polytechnic education in Nigeria.

He opined that the polytechnic sector should be accorded it's due priority in the country for national development.

He noted that the polytechnic sector today was facing challenges from different quarters as a result of the nation's economy which has been struggling to beat negative headwinds caused by dwindling resources for sustainable development in the sector.

"The intervention lines for infrastructural development in polytechnics are getting leaner in spite of the best efforts of TETFUND and other agencies.

"The regulatory environment has also shrinked the operating space of the polytechnics with the result that what used to be taken for granted in the past, like admission of students, and floating of new programmes, now require strict regulatory approval to navigate.

" The most challenging issue in the polytechnic sector today is the continuing dichotomy between university and polytechnic graduates and the certificates issued to them.

"This is despite federal government's pronouncements abrogating the dichotomy. It is globally acknowledged that the polytechnic sector is central to technical and vocational education", he said

Attah warned the new students of the institution against dishonesty, examination malpractice, forgery, cultism, intimidation of fellow students, rape , stealing and poor academic performance.

He said any student found in the anti -social behaviours, would be rusticated.

Staff of DUFUTH passes vote of Confidence on CMD , describes Allegations of Abuse of Office as baseless

Staff of David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, Uburu, Ebonyi State has passed vote of Confidence on the Chief Medical Director, Professor Mrs Uzoma Agwu .

The members of the staff under the aegis of DUFUTH Staff Welfare Association who passed the vote of confidence in a solidarity March at Uburu, Ohaozara Council area commended her proven track records in hospital management, integrity and genuine commitment to public service.

The solidarity march took the staff round the premises, chanting songs and bearing placards with various inscriptions expressing their support for the CMD.

They were protesting against what they described as unjust treatment, wild and misguided allegations by some group against the CMD.

In a communique which was read by the publicity secretary of the Staff Welfare Association Jideofor Ibekwe described the earlier protest as both unwarranted and baseless.

It maintained that the earlier protest was a pre-conceived can of falsehood by the organisers to cast aspersion on the hardworking CMD who they said has spent days and nights within the hospital to nurture the institution from cradle since 2022.

Part of the communique read: "The DUFUTH Staff Welfare Association, representing all staff engaged at the hospital, is shocked and dismayed by the unwarranted protests held on Monday, 24th March 2025 and the baseless allegations being circulated by the demonstrators and therefore wishes to state as follows:

"That we frown at the allegations of criminal repurposing of facilities, and the ridiculous claims of removal of beds, foams, medications and generators from the teaching hospital, as well as of corruption and abuse of office, leveled against the CMD.

"There is no evidence to support this claim, either in picture, print or video and we challenge the accusers to prove us wrong with counter evidence.

"We wish to tell the world that since the inception of DUFUTH, the hospital has been guided by regulations, conventions, extant rules and approved laws guiding the conduct of federal teaching hospitals under the tutelage of our parent Ministry, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, while also consistently demonstrating readiness for clinical training of DUFUHS students with various batches of 300 level students already undergoing/completed training.

"That the demonstrators and their lackeys overreached themselves and showed lack of exposure and enlightenment by unilaterally ordering a sitting CMD appointed by the Presidency to immediately vacate her office and evacuate all her belongings from the hospital , without recourse to proper channels of routing petitions and grievances.

"That we strongly oppose the calls for the removal of the incumbent Chief Medical Director of DUFUTH, Professor Uzoma Agwu as the allegations against her is unsubstantiated and lacks merit."

The communique also condemned in strong terms some oppositions against the ongoing staff recruitment exercise in the hospital describing it as a total lack of love for the growth of the health institution which is currently short staffed.

It also condemned certain unguided onslaught on the hospital from some quarters, maintaining that such actions demonstrate gross negligence of the welfare of patients which the hospital strives day and night to uphold.

"That we strongly condemn the blockade mounted by the protesters on Monday 24th March, 2024 which demonstrated an alarming lack of empathy and concern for patients seeking medical attention.

"The blockade not only disrupted essential healthcare services but also prevented patients with emergency cases, their relations and caregivers from accessing the hospital.

"That we are deeply concerned by the protesters’ demand to cancel the forthcoming recruitment exercise at DUFUTH, particularly as the local community stands to benefit significantly from the employment.

"Furthermore, the hospital is in dire need of additional staff to bolster its workforce, and cancelling the recruitment exercise would only exacerbate the existing staffing shortages.

Ebonyi Youths berate Ezekwesili, backs Senator Nwebonyi

The Ebonyi North Youths stakeholders Forum, has condemned the recent verbal attack directed at Senator Peter Nwebonyi Onyekachi by former Minister, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili.

The forum in a statement, released yesterday and signed by its national coordinator Comrade Chijioke Njoku, called on Mrs. Ezekwesili to apologize for her remarks, which they characterized as a public insult to the senator.

According to Comrade Njoku, Senator Nwebonyi has demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to his constituents in less than three years in office.

"Senator Nwebonyi has empowered countless individuals in our community through his initiatives in agriculture, human capital development, and overall empowerment programs," Njoku stated.

The forum expressed concern that Ezekwesili's comments not only undermined the senator's efforts but also sought to disgrace an Ebonyi son who has been dedicated to bettering the lives of the people in his senatorial zone. The group emphasized that such attacks are detrimental to the collective progress of the region and urged for unity among leaders and constituents in moving forward.

The Ebonyi North Youths Forum reaffirmed their support for Senator Nwebonyi, highlighting his accomplishments and calling for a respectful dialogue among political leaders. They reiterated their stance that constructive criticism is vital for democracy, but personal attacks and character assassination have no place in political discourse.

As the situation develops, the forum hopes that a spirit of cooperation will prevail, fostering an environment conducive to development and progress for all residents of Ebonyi North.

Medical activities paralyzed as Protest Rocks David Umahi Teaching Hospital

Medical and other human activities at the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH), Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State were paralyzed following a protest by the host community, Uburu against the management of the hospital.

The protesters who blocked the entrance gate to the hospital for hours, demanded for accountability and reform in the hospital.

The protesters who were led by the four traditional rulers in Uburu kingdom; Godwin Akpandu Okoro, Christopher Ngwu Abbah, Eze Umezurike and Lazarus Umahi alleged gross mismanagement, systemic abuse, leadership failures and blatant disregard to the host community against the management of the university.

"As a people, we are first hand witnesses of the alarming deterioration of the infrastructure and healthcare delivery at the hospital, a hospital primed to deliver the best healthcare in Africa.

"We are angry at the erosion of public trust as patients are constantly being referred to Abakaliki and the calculated destruction of our community's treasured healthcare institution. As a people, we can no longer remain silent while our people suffer due to the incompetence, negligence, and malicious actions of those entrusted with the care of these great National assets.

"Our Grievances are as Follows against the CMD and the Director of administration"that the Leadership of the CMD and the Director of Administration has led to the complete sabotage of the vision and mission of setting up the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital.

"That the Leadership of the hospital led by the CMD and the Director of Administration criminally repurposed facilities at the hospital for some other personal businesses thereby deliberately affecting healthcare services delivery.

"Corruption and abuse of office.
Conversion of key Centers, equipped with life-saving technology as living quarters for Youth Corps members and security operatives, and stripped of its essential equipment.

"Denial of Clinical Students of David Umahi Federal University of Health Science access for their clinical enrollment and placement at the Teaching Hospital.
Corrupt employment and job racketeering.

" Removal of beds, foams, medications and generators from the Teaching Hospital and their use at other hospitals.
The CMD’s deliberate and protracted rift with the Vice Chancellor (VC) of David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences Uburu (DUFUHS) has crippled collaboration and hindered progress even after the community intervention through committee made up Traditional Leadership and stakeholders from Ohaozara. The refusal by the Teaching Hospital under their Leadership to cooperate is a clear act of sabotage against the institution.

"Operational and Administrative Catastrophe where a beautiful edifice handed over to her has been turned to a disgrace, with dirty conveniences, exposed electrical hazards, cracked walls, leaking roofs, and fallen tiles posing a direct threat to patient safety. The proliferation of makeshift shops within the hospital complex reflects a complete lack of order and professionalism.

"Excessive high billing system has been implemented, effectively denying access to healthcare for the most vulnerable members of our community. Bad personnel management at the hospital as staffs no longer come to work.

"Their refusal to live and work in Uburu.
The CMD’s repeated disregard for agreement and directives related to the joint MOU between DUFUHS and DUFUTH demonstrates a complete lack of integrity and respect to the Host community and her leadership", he said.

Reacting to the protest, the hospital described it as unwarranted.

The Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Agwu Nwogo stated this in a statement on the protest.

.He said the accusations against the management of the health Institution were not only baseless but also a gross misrepresentation of the facts.

"Having had the privilege of witnessing the CMD's tireless efforts and remarkable achievements, we are compelled to set the record straight.

"Professor Uzoma Agwu inherited a hospital that was, in essence, a mere shell of its potential. With no clinical activities taking place, the hospital was a far cry from the vibrant healthcare institution it is today.

"Under her visionary leadership, the hospital has undergone a transformation of monumental proportions. From a mere handful of staff, the hospital now boasts over 700 regular staff members, supplemented by regular and ad-hoc consultants.

"The hospital's physical infrastructure has also undergone significant improvements under the CMD's watch. From a 5-storey building complex where administrative and clinical operations were confined to the ground floor, the hospital now boasts fully functional departments across all floors. The CMD has also addressed the post-construction defects, including plumbing, sewage, and water reticulation issues that plagued the hospital. The fact that 80% of water outlets were blocked and unusable upon her assumption of office is a stark reminder of the challenges she faced.

"Despite these daunting challenges, the CMD has remained focused on delivering quality healthcare services to the community. The hospital has secured accreditation from reputable clinical professional associations, including the Dental and Medical Council of Nigeria, the Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria, and the Pharmacy Council.

"The hospital's clinical operations have also recorded significant milestones under the CMD's leadership. From January 2023 to December 2024, the hospital successfully handled complex surgeries, including plastic surgery and reconstruction, burr hole surgery, cataract/pterygium surgeries, spinal cord transection surgeries, total hip replacement surgery, knee arthroplasty, Open Reduction and Internal fixation, amputation surgeries, cleft lips and palate surgeries, and many more. These achievements demonstrate the hospital's growing capacity to provide specialized medical services to the community.

"Furthermore, the CMD has prioritized community outreach and sensitization programmes, organizing several free medical outreaches and sensitization programmes within and outside the hospital, with undiverted focus on Uburu locals.

"These programmes have provided free screening, drugs, and treatments to numerous beneficiaries. The hospital has also undertaken free surgeries for children aged 1-6, alleviating the financial burden on their parents as well as free dialysis for kidney patients which was widely publicized in the media", he said

A constitutional lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Roy Nweze Umahi has backed the declaration of state of emergency in Rivers State,
by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,
describing it as lawful aimed at restoring normalcy.

Umahi who stated this in an interview with journalists however, tasked those criticizing the action of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in River state to eschew the expression of emotions and sentiments while judging the actions of the President.

"I want to say that nobody is saying that the President does not have power to declare a state of emergency in any state if an extraordinary situation arises. What some people are saying is that, yes, the President has the power to declare a state of emergency but that in making such a declaration he should not suspend the governor of the state, the deputy governor and members of the house of assembly. I think that's exactly what people are saying.

"Nobody is doubting the fact that section 305 of the 1999 constitution as amended gives the President the power to declare a state of emergency in any state and then to approach the national assembly for ratification of the declaration if they see it fit. He has to approach them within two days from the date of the making of the declaration if the national assembly is in session but if the national assembly is not in session then within 10 days. And I know he has already contacted the National Assembly and they intend to consider the declaration tomorrow.

"So the issue that is bothering most people, especially lawyers, is the couching of the provisions of section 305 of the 1999 constitution. That section actually tends to create doubts as to whether in the declaration of a state of emergency, the President can or cannot suspend the governor of a state, his deputy and the members of the house of Assembly.

"Now those who are making categorical statements that the President cannot suspend or can suspend the state electees, of course they know within themselves that they cannot stand their feet and say that they are too sure of what they are saying, because what they are individually saying is either based on mere conjecture or downright.it's a case of downright grandstanding or it may be politics or it may be expression of emotions or sentiments.

He further noted that the declaration of a state of emergency by the President pertains to the existence of an extraordinary situation, an abnormal situation which the declaration seeks to arrest in order to restore normalcy.

"Now it may sometimes happen that the people who are causing this, the people who are responsible for the declaration of a state of emergency may be the people who are in office like the governor, the deputy governor, the house of assembly members as is clearly the case in River State.

"So, now the question will be since a declaration of a state of emergency involves restriction of rights, if the governor, the deputy governor and the house of assembly members are not suspended, how would whoever is going to handle the security situation go ahead to handle it because the governor is still having his immunity to do anything he likes within the state but when you remove, when you now suspend him,it means he no longer has that immunity. So the extent that he can go on doing whatever he was doing before now, would be limited or restricted.

"Now we are dealing with a state where the governor and the house of assembly members have been having problems since 2023 or thereabouts. Now this problem culminated in the burning of the state house of Assembly. Now there is a video in circulation where the governor told the youths that when it would be needed for them to act he would tell them. Now the question then is, whether the present acts of blowing up oil pipelines, gas pipelines, whether those youths have actually not been instructed.

Speaking on the constitutional rights of the President to declare a state of emergency in River State, Nweze said: "I am saying that there is no way the President will arrest the situation in River State without suspending the Governor and the House of Assembly. I don't believe in sentiments. The law has to be said the way it ought to be said, because in the interpretation of law you must take so many things into consideration.

"As I said before, the declaration of a state of emergency means that there exists an abnormal set of affairs that will need to be dealt with in some extraordinary ways. The need for the application of those extraordinary ways to deal with the situation is what underlies the essence the declaration of a state of emergency. So whether the State Governor and his Deputy and House of Assembly members would remain in their offices or should be suspended would depend largely on whether they are remaining in their offices would hamper or assist in the resolution of the abnormal situation that led to the declaration of the state of emergency.

When Goodluck Jonathan was in office, he declared a state of emergency in Borno, in Yobe and one other state. He did not remove the governor, the deputy governor and the house of assembly members, because it was obvious that they were not the people causing the problem. So, in the case of Rivers State, the people who have been suspended are the same persons who are responsible for the declaration.

On why President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not suspend the minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike as well, the constitutional lawyer, Umahi said: "what I can tell you is that there is nothing anybody, if you want to speak on the point of law, there is nothing anybody can say that Nyesom Wike has done in Rivers State. It is not an issue in River State. I'm talking about law because Nyesom Wike is not the house of assembly members.

He further blamed the removed governor Fubara of being very weak as a governor;"The House of Assembly members are adults who are doing things themselves. So, you see people are taking this matter the way it ought not to be. Look at the governor, Fubara. I can tell you, he is inexperienced. The governor I can tell you is weak.

"The governor, I can tell you, is gullible. The governor I can tell you takes advice from some way. I can't see how any governor who has anybody who has actually been involved in politics, you know who would be doing things the way Fubara is doing. And at the moment, they talk to him he does whatever people tell him. So he can't use his brain. When Hope Uzodinma was elected in his first tenure, within two months he got all the members of other parties in the house of assembly. they became members of his party.

He added: "The governor Fubara was incapable of using his powers in order to get all those assembly members.

"If a governor is too weak that he cannot manage his state then he's not fit to be governor. That's my submission on that.it's not every governor that can be removed just like that. Fubara had 4 members of the house of assembly supporting him. 4 out of 32. Haba, it's too bad.

He however urged the newly appointed sole administrator to focus more on returning normalcy in River state, adding that governor Fubara and the members of the state house of assembly must learn their lessons after six months, and then learn to give way for peace to reign.

"The way forward is for the newly appointed sole administrator to do his work. And then within six months, I can tell you that Fubara would have learnt his lessons. Because somebody who is a governor and cannot handle the state, I tell you, that's a great weakness.

"So,the suspended governor and the suspended assembly members and then they will see the need for peace. I'm sure they will be able to resolve the differences. If they cannot resolve it, they should allow the law to take its course. Everything should be done in accordance with the law" he stressed.
