Ebonyi Works Commissioner Debunks Viral Claim on Vanco Flyover, Reaffirms Government’s Commitment to Project

ABAKALIKI – The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Works has dismissed as false and misleading a social media report alleging that the state government had engaged a Chinese construction company to take over the Vanco Flyover and Tunnel Project in Abakaliki and ordered the demolition of the existing structure.

In a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Works, Mr. Onwe Emmanuel Onwe, the ministry described the report as a fabrication designed to misinform the public and undermine the infrastructural development efforts of the administration of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.

The statement clarified that at no time had the Ebonyi State Government approved or announced plans to demolish the Vanco Flyover and Tunnel Project, contrary to claims circulating on social media.

According to the ministry, there is also no truth in the allegation that a Chinese construction company was invited to assess the project and subsequently recommended the demolition of the existing structure due to alleged defects in the foundation.

“The report is entirely false, unfounded and does not reflect the reality of the project,” the ministry stated, stressing that no Chinese firm had made any such recommendation to the government or the Ministry of Works.

The ministry accused the authors of the publication of deliberately spreading misinformation with the intention of creating public anxiety and casting doubt on the government's commitment to infrastructure development.

It further emphasized that all decisions relating to public projects in Ebonyi State are guided by professional engineering assessments, due process and the best interests of the people, rather than unverified claims and social media rumours.

The government also faulted portions of the report which speculated about project costs, contract arrangements and alleged kickbacks, describing such assertions as baseless and irresponsible.

The Ministry warned that the circulation of false information regarding critical infrastructure projects could mislead the public and erode confidence in government institutions.

Reaffirming the state government's commitment to the completion of the project, the ministry noted that the Vanco Flyover and Tunnel remains a critical infrastructure initiative aimed at improving traffic flow, addressing flooding challenges and enhancing economic activities within Abakaliki and its environs.

The statement also dismissed suggestions that investment in infrastructure was being pursued at the expense of empowerment programmes, noting that skill acquisition and empowerment initiatives are simultaneously being implemented through various ministries and government agencies.

The ministry therefore urged residents of Ebonyi State and the general public to disregard the publication in its entirety and rely solely on official government channels for accurate information concerning ongoing projects across the state.

It reiterated its commitment to transparency, public engagement and accountability while maintaining a firm stance against misinformation and deliberate attempts to distort facts for political or personal interests.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged winner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election in Ebonyi State after polling 15,300 votes in the exercise conducted across the state.

The result was declared at Preston Hotel, which served as the state collation centre for the primary election.

According to the official results released by the Ebonyi State Presidential Primary Election Committee, Atiku defeated former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who secured 2,200 votes, while Muhammad Hayatudeen polled 200 votes.

In what many party faithful described as one of the most peaceful and transparent primaries witnessed in recent times in Ebonyi State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Ivo State Constituency, Chisom Godswill Anyim, has lauded Governor Francis Nwifuru for ensuring a credible and rancour-free exercise across the state.

Anyim, who emerged as the APC consensus candidate for the 2027 Ebonyi State House of Assembly election, said the peaceful conduct of the primaries reflected Governor Nwifuru’s commitment to internal democracy, unity, and inclusive leadership within the party.

Speaking shortly after his emergence, the youthful politician expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Francis Nwifuru, party stakeholders, and the people of Ivo Local Government Area for the confidence reposed in him.

According to him, “I sincerely appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his purposeful leadership and unwavering commitment to strengthening democracy in Nigeria. I am equally grateful to our dear Governor, His Excellency Francis Nwifuru, for providing a level playing field and ensuring peaceful primaries across Ebonyi State.”

Anyim also commended party leaders, women, youths, and stakeholders in Ivo LGA for their support, unity, and maturity throughout the primary process.

The APC candidate promised to pursue an issue-based campaign ahead of the 2027 general election, assuring constituents that he would focus on people-oriented legislation and grassroots development if elected into office.

He outlined youth empowerment, quality education, agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure development, and employment opportunities as key priorities of his legislative agenda.

They described him as energetic, visionary, and prepared for the task ahead, noting that his emergence has further strengthened the APC’s chances of victory in the forthcoming election

Politics'Journalists’ Chapel Slams Senator Eze Over Alleged Assault At Ebonyi Senatorial by DavidUkah01(op): 10:01am On May 19
'Journalists’ Chapel Slams Senator Eze Over Alleged Assault at Ebonyi Senatorial Primary

Abakaliki – The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ebonyi State chapter, has condemned the alleged attack on the state NUJ Chairman, Comrade Samson Nwafor, and other journalists during the Ebonyi Central senatorial primary in Onueke, Ezza South Local Government Area on Monday, May 18, 2026.

In a statement signed by Chapel Chairman Comrade Uchenna Inya, the group said the incident occurred at the hands of Senator Kenneth Eze, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation, his aides, and political thugs. The chapel described the attack as an assault on the entire journalism community in the state.

“The chapel views this attack as an attack on the entire journalists in the state,” the statement read.

The journalists outlined four demands in response. They called on Senator Eze to uphold his role as head of the Senate Committee on Information by refraining from intimidating and harassing journalists carrying out their duties as the fourth estate of the realm.

The chapel also demanded a public apology from the senator within 24 hours, warning that failure to comply would result in a media blacklist. It further stated that Senator Eze, his aides, and one Kizito Nwankwo—who allegedly threatened to “deal with” any journalist who published details of the incident—should be held responsible if any journalist in the state comes to harm.

In addition, the group urged Senate President Godswill Akpabio to remove Senator Eze from his position as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation, citing his inability to control his temperament in public.

The chapel recalled that it had been less than a month since Senator Eze was involved in a heated exchange with senatorial aspirant Chief Christian Asaga Nwali at a burial ceremony in Amudo, Ezza South LGA. That incident, it said, embarrassed attendees and heightened political tensions in the area.

Renewed Hope GEEP Kicks Off in Ebonyi as FG Pushes Grassroots Economic Empowerment

ABAKALIKI – The Federal Government have rolled out the Renewed Hope FarmerMoni 3.0 programme in the South-East, targeting smallholder farmers with interest-free, collateral-free loans to increase productivity and strengthen food security.

The programme, organised by the National Social Investment Programme Agency (N-SIPA) in collaboration with the Ebonyi State Government, was unveiled during the Renewed Hope FarmerMoni South-East Media Sensitisation and Stakeholders’ Engagement held at Re-Meritona Hotels and Suites in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

The launch in Abakaliki forms part of the broader Renewed Hope Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (RHGEEP) 3.0, driven by N-SIPA under the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro, described FarmerMoni as one of the flagship intervention programmes of the Federal Government under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Minister, represented by the National Programme Manager of the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), Hon. Hamza Baba, said the programme was designed to provide interest-free financial support to small-scale farmers to improve productivity, strengthen food security, and reduce rural poverty.

Baba disclosed that Ebonyi State was selected to host the South-East zonal media sensitisation because of its growing profile in agriculture, particularly in rice, cassava, and livestock production.

He commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for implementing policies that have positioned Ebonyi as an emerging agricultural hub in the country.

According to him, the state government’s investments in irrigation, livestock development, agricultural value chains, and rural infrastructure demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainable food production.

He highlighted the implementation of the International Fund for Agricultural Development-supported Value Chain Development Programme and the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project backed by the World Bank, noting that such initiatives align with the objectives of FarmerMoni.

“The Federal Government is committed to supporting Nigerian farmers through inclusive economic growth and strategic agricultural partnerships.

“FarmerMoni is not a grant but an interest-free loan designed to support vulnerable farmers. Beneficiaries are expected to utilise the funds judiciously and repay within six to nine months to enable others to benefit,” Baba said.

He further revealed that beneficiaries who successfully repay the loans would qualify for larger credit facilities through partnerships with financial institutions, including the Bank of Agriculture and NIRSAL.

Baba urged desk officers and field coordinators selected from the local government areas to ensure transparency, credibility, and fairness during the enumeration and monitoring of beneficiaries.

Speaking while flagging off the programme, State Governor Francis Nwifuru said the state government remained committed to transformative leadership anchored on the “People’s Charter of Needs” policy framework.

The Governor, represented by the State Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Barrister Ikeuwa Omebeh, said the government had continued to invest heavily in peacebuilding, security, human capital development, and agricultural empowerment programmes aimed at improving the welfare of vulnerable communities across the state.

According to him, the Nwifuru administration has prioritised the construction of concrete-paved rural roads and modern markets in rural communities to ease access to farms and improve the marketing of agricultural produce.

“Ebonyi people are hardworking and predominantly agrarian. Government’s fundamental responsibility is the protection of lives and property, and today Ebonyi remains one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria,” he said.

He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction for sustaining intervention programmes in agriculture and poverty alleviation, noting that Ebonyi people had benefited immensely from the initiatives.

Also speaking, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Human Capital Development and Monitoring, Mrs. Ann Aligwe, said many smallholder farmers running into thousands in the state would benefit from the programme, with each beneficiary expected to receive N300,000.

She explained that the intervention aligns with Governor Nwifuru’s Charter of Needs agenda, which prioritises citizens’ welfare and human capital development.

“The essence of this programme is to ensure that Ebonyians benefit directly from the Renewed Hope Agenda. These funds are meant to support small farmers during the farming season so that nobody in Ebonyi will go hungry during harvest periods,” she stated.

Aligwe recalled that the state government recently flagged off the distribution of debit cards to about 35,000 beneficiaries of another social investment initiative across the 13 local government areas of the state.

She advised beneficiaries not to divert the funds but to invest strictly in farming activities to maximise productivity and improve their livelihoods.

On whether additional phases would be introduced, the Commissioner noted that the current allocation covered only the approved beneficiaries, adding that further expansion would depend on decisions by the Federal Government.

In his address, the Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Ebonyi State chapter, Dr. Ignatius Unah, commended President Tinubu for introducing people-oriented programmes under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He described FarmerMoni, TraderMoni, and MarketMoni as strategic interventions capable of transforming rural economies and empowering artisans, traders, and farmers.

Similarly, the Head of Administration of GEEP, Ifeoma Chukwumbah, said FarmerMoni targets smallholder farmers involved in crop production, poultry, fisheries, livestock, and allied agricultural ventures.

She explained that beneficiaries would receive collateral-free, interest-free loans of up to N300,000, with repayment structured around farming cycles.

According to her, repayment would commence three months after disbursement and could span six to nine months, depending on the nature of farming activities.

Chukwumbah disclosed that unpaid beneficiaries captured under GEEP 2.0 in 2022 would also be accommodated once revalidated, while fresh registrations are ongoing for new participants under GEEP 3.0.

As part of the sensitisation programme, officials and stakeholders, led by the Permanent Secretary, Ebonyi State Ministry of Human Capital Development and Monitoring, Mr. Henry Nworie, visited selected agricultural clusters, including SCON Agro Farm in Okaria Edda community in Abakaliki Local Government Area and Diamond Testimony Farm at Ameta Ezza in Ezza South Local Government Area.

The farms, which specialise in poultry, piggery, fisheries, palm plantations, and other livestock activities, were showcased as examples of Ebonyi’s growing agricultural potential under ongoing government interventions.

Abakaliki FC Underperforms Despite Strong Funding, Says Governor’s Sports Aide Pius Nwankwo

The Special Assistant to the Ebonyi State Governor on Sports, Mr. Pius Nwankwo, has called for a comprehensive restructuring of Abakaliki FC, arguing that the club’s current administrative and technical framework cannot deliver competitive results despite receiving substantial government funding.

Nwankwo, a former international footballer with a professional career across Europe and Africa, made the remarks during a press conference in Abakaliki while assessing the state of sports development in Ebonyi and the performance of the state-owned club.

He commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for reviving sports in the state after more than 15 years of decline.

“The governor has done well in bringing sports back to Ebonyi. Activities had almost collapsed for over a decade and a half. Without sports, many of us would have no relevance or engagement,” he said.

However, Nwankwo expressed concern over Abakaliki FC’s underperformance relative to its financial backing.

“I don’t know what people mean when they say the club has done well. My assessment is clear: it has fallen below expectations. The club is well-funded and lacks nothing except results. In football, much is given and much is expected,” he stated.

He likened the situation to investing in a business without returns, insisting that effort alone cannot excuse poor performance.
Nwankwo rejected the notion that a mid-table finish represented progress for a well-resourced club.
“Coming fifth is not success at this level. If you are well-funded and still hover around mid-table or close to relegation, then something is fundamentally wrong,” he said.

The sports aide also questioned the club’s administrative structure, noting the absence of a functional management system.
“Abakaliki FC currently lacks a proper management framework. Multiple board members without clearly defined roles have created inefficiency,” he said, adding that his call was for systemic reform, not personal criticism.

On allegations of internal crises, including salary deductions and disputes between players and management, Nwankwo said such claims must be backed by documentation.
“If players feel they are being short-changed, they should provide evidence. I cannot act on rumours. My office is open when they are ready,” he noted.

He further stressed that technical performance should be measured by league standings rather than cup competitions, which he described as “knockout-based and not a true reflection of consistency.” Any technical crew managing a well-funded team, he said, must be held accountable for results.

Nwankwo also addressed the debate over the inclusion of indigenous players, emphasizing that merit should take precedence over sentiment. “In every part of the world, you build a team by combining experienced professionals with local talent. That is how development works,” he said.

He urged young players in the state to take charge of their careers and seek opportunities beyond state-owned clubs if necessary. “Football is a global and competitive profession. Players must be willing to take risks and move out if they want to grow,” he advised.

Drawing from his own career across several clubs in West Africa and Europe, Nwankwo said his international experience informs his view on professional football administration. He also referenced his post-retirement work in sports development, including running a football academy.

He concluded by reiterating the need for urgent reform in Ebonyi’s sports administration, particularly in the governance of club football. “Without professional restructuring and accountability, state investment in football will continue to yield limited results despite substantial financial commitment,” he said.

The Ebonyi State Council of Elders has declared its unanimous support for Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s second-term bid in 2027, commending his leadership in resolving disputes arising from the All Progressives Congress [APC] candidate selection process for State and National Assembly elections.

In a press briefing in Abakaliki, the Chairman of the Elders Council, Engr. Ben Okah, flanked by the Secretary, Nduka Ozo, and other members, said the governor’s handling of recent political developments had reaffirmed his role as the “Father of Ebonyi State.”

“We have observed, with great satisfaction, his depth of understanding, leadership capacity, and unwavering commitment to the peace, unity, and overall well-being of the people of Ebonyi State,” the statement read.

The elders noted that the governor’s approach had demonstrated fairness, inclusiveness, and a genuine commitment to the collective interest of all Ebonyians.

They expressed appreciation for what they described as the solid foundation laid by his administration, which they said provides a credible pathway for continued progress.

“As critical stakeholders in the state, we wish to express our profound appreciation and pride in his leadership and accomplishments thus far,” the statement added.

The council also called on all consensus candidates selected during the APC primaries to urgently reach out to their co-aspirants for reconciliation in the interest of party unity. It further appealed to individuals criticizing the governor and his administration to desist from such actions.

The endorsement comes as political activities begin to build ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the council positioning itself as a stabilizing voice in the state’s political landscape.

2027: Ex-Ebonyi Lawmaker Usulor Joins Ebonyi Central Senate Race Under APC

Abakaliki – A former member of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chris Usulor, has declared his intention to contest the Ebonyi Central Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Usulor, a three-term lawmaker from Ezza South Local Government Area, made his intention known while addressing supporters and party stakeholders in his constituency.

He said his decision was informed by a sense of duty and the need to provide focused and result-oriented representation for the people of the zone.

“I hereby formally declare my intention to contest for the senatorial position to represent Ebonyi Central Senatorial Zone on the platform of the APC,” he said.

“This decision is driven by a deep sense of duty and a firm belief that our people deserve focused, transparent, pragmatic, and results-driven representation.

“Ebonyi Central is rich in potential. Our farmers, traders, youths, and professionals are resilient and hardworking.

"However, we must match that strength with leadership and policies that expand opportunities, strengthen infrastructure, improve education and healthcare, and drive sustainable economic growth for all,” Usulor said.

The APC aspirant said his experience as a three-term member of the state assembly has equipped him with the requisite legislative knowledge and understanding of governance.

“This aspiration is not about personal ambition, but about service, accountability, and inclusive progress. I am committed to listening to every community, engaging stakeholders, and building consensus around practical solutions to our shared challenges,” he added.

Usulor, son of the late Senator Vincent Usulor, said he would prioritize job creation, youth empowerment, and rural infrastructure development if elected.

He urged residents of the senatorial district to support his ambition, irrespective of political affiliation.

Observers say his entry into the race may reshape the contest, as more aspirants are expected to declare ahead of the 2027 polls.

Abakaliki – The member representing Abakaliki/Izzi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Chief Emmanuel Uguru, JP (Agbarike Izhi), has distributed educational materials to schools, 50 laptops to ICT trainees, and ₦200,000 cash grants each to 50 small-scale business owners across the constituency.

The distribution was held at Nkaliki, the headquarters of Abakaliki LGA, during an empowerment programme that also featured the celebration of the FON Movement in Abakaliki/Izzi Federal Constituency.

Speaking at the event, Uguru described education as “the foundation of societal development and the strongest pillar upon which every progressive society is built,” stressing that investing in children secures the future of communities.

He said the exercise aligns with the educational initiatives of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru and fulfils commitments in his manifesto to improve educational infrastructure and promote digital and vocational skills.

According to the lawmaker, educational materials were distributed to primary and junior secondary schools across Abakaliki and Izzi LGAs to encourage pupils and students to stay focused on their studies.

He also disclosed that over 28 indigent but intelligent students from various communities in the constituency have been awarded scholarships to ensure financial constraints do not truncate their academic aspirations.

On infrastructure, Uguru listed completed and ongoing projects to include the construction of classroom blocks at Onweonwiya Village, Mgbalukwu Inyimegu, Ndieborshiagu (Sharon), and Ndiofutulgbegu, all in Izzi LGA; the renovation of Echara Unuhu Primary School in Izzi Unuhu Community; and the construction of Ndieze Inyimegu Unuhu Community Primary School in Abakaliki LGA.

Describing the day as “particularly significant,” the lawmaker presented laptops to the first batch of beneficiaries of his ICT training programme.

“These laptops are not just devices; they are tools of empowerment, innovation, and self-reliance,” he said, urging beneficiaries to use them for creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

To strengthen grassroots mobilization, Uguru announced the donation of two vehicles to the FON Movement in Abakaliki and Izzi chapters. He said the vehicles would enhance their mobility as they sensitize residents on the policies and programmes of the state government.

He further announced cash grants for small-scale business entrepreneurs across the constituency, noting that the support is designed to sustain existing businesses, stimulate local economic growth, and encourage self-reliance.

Uguru commended Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru and his wife, Chief Mrs. Mary-Maudline Uzoamaka Nwifuru, for creating an education-friendly environment in Ebonyi State. He also lauded teachers, school administrators, and community leaders for their contributions to child development.

“This is only one of many steps we have taken and will continue to take in our collective journey toward progress and development,” he assured constituents, adding that he would later give a comprehensive account of his stewardship.

The representative of the Governor, Mr. Paul Nwogha, who flagged off the distribution of the items, advised the beneficiaries to always show appreciation whenever they receive kind gestures from their benefactor, as it encourages the benefactor to do more.

In an interview, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Finance, Nwali Amechi, said the lawmaker has made a good name for himself and his generation.

The event was attended by stakeholders from both Abakaliki and Izzi LGAs.

CrimePolice Spokesperson, Nwode Alleges Blackmail, Condemns Media Report Over Leaked by DavidUkah01(op): 1:10pm On Mar 21
Police spokesperson, Nwode alleges blackmail, condemns media report over leaked audio on detained suspect

A senior police officer, Nkeiruka Nwode, has strongly criticized media reports linking her to an alleged leaked audio which talked about a detained suspect in an ongoing trial, Nnamdi Emeh.

Mr Emeh remains in prison custody after he was charged for various crimes including alleged fraudulent withdrawal of millions from the account of one Mr Chibuike Ekwueme and defamation.

The said report alleged that Nwode, a Chief Superintendent of Police, was the voice heard in the controversial recording.

In a swift reaction, CSP Nwode dismissed the report as misleading and accused the media outlet of presenting a one-sided narrative without seeking her response.

She described the publication as an attempt to distort facts and damage her professional reputation.

According to her statement, the individual referenced in the report, Nnamdi Daniel Emeh, is allegedly involved in misconduct, including financial impropriety and defamation.

She further claimed that Emeh had boasted about deliberately attempting to frustrate her professional duties.

Nwode, the spokesperson of Force Headquarters Annex, Lagos maintained that her actions throughout the matter were guided strictly by professionalism, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law.

She emphasized that any investigative steps she took were aimed at tracing funds and ensuring justice, rather than for personal benefit.

She also alleged that the situation surrounding the leaked audio is part of a broader attempt at blackmail, asserting that such tactics are often employed when “truth threatens corruption.”

“I will not be intimidated, and I will not bow to attempts to rewrite facts or discredit professionalism,” she stated, adding that transparency and integrity remain central to her conduct", she said.

The police spokesperson concluded by expressing confidence that the truth would ultimately prevail, despite ongoing public controversy surrounding the leaked recording.

Politics2027:edda Group Urges Nwifuru To Zone Reps Seat, Cites 20-year Afikpo Dominance by DavidUkah01(op): 1:26pm On Mar 18
2027:Edda group urges Nwifuru to zone Reps Seat, cites 20-year Afikpo dominance

A socio-political organisation, the Edda Grassroots Movement for FON, has appealed to Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, to zone the Afikpo/Edda Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives to Edda Local Government Area ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group said its demand is anchored on the principles of equity, fairness, and inclusive governance, stressing that Afikpo LGA has held the seat continuously since 2007, nearly two decades without rotation.

In a statement issued in Abakaliki and made available to journalists, the National Coordinator of the group, Hon. Orji Patrick, argued that the prolonged dominance of Afikpo in the constituency’s political representation has created a sense of marginalisation among the people of Edda.

He noted that beyond the House of Representatives seat, Afikpo currently occupies other strategic political positions, including the office of the Deputy Governor, thereby deepening what he described as an imbalance in the distribution of political opportunities within the constituency.

“We are not asking for favour, but for fairness,” Orji said. “For over 20 years, Afikpo LGA has produced the member representing Afikpo/Edda Federal Constituency. Today, they also hold key positions such as the Deputy Governor, while Edda has no representation at that level.”

The group maintained that zoning the seat to Edda would not only correct what it termed a “historical injustice,” but also strengthen grassroots participation and unity within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the area.

According to the statement, Edda is endowed with competent and loyal party members who are capable of effectively representing the constituency at the national level.

“There are credible and experienced individuals in Edda who are ready to serve. Allowing Edda to produce the next representative will energise the grassroots and consolidate support for the APC,” Orji added.

The group aligned its appeal with Governor Nwifuru’s “People’s First” agenda and the broader “Charter of Equity” principle, which emphasises fairness, balance, and inclusiveness in governance.

“We believe Your Excellency’s leadership has consistently demonstrated a commitment to justice and equitable distribution of opportunities. Zoning the House of Representatives seat to Edda is in line with this vision,” the statement read.

The Edda Grassroots Movement further urged the leadership of the APC in Ebonyi State to support the call, noting that political stability and unity within the constituency would be better sustained through a deliberate power-sharing arrangement.

The appeal adds to growing conversations around zoning and equitable representation in Ebonyi politics as stakeholders begin early positioning ahead of the 2027 elections.
Observers say how the issue is managed could shape political alignments within the Afikpo/Edda Federal Constituency and influence party cohesion in the state.

Celebrating Life Through Service — Police Spokesperson Nwode Touches Lives on Birthday

For many people, birthdays are marked with cakes, parties and personal celebrations. But for Nkeiruka Nwode, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters Annex in Lagos, the occasion became an opportunity to uplift others and spread hope.

To commemorate her birthday on March 13, 2026, Nwode chose a different kind of celebration — one rooted in compassion and community service. Hundreds of artisanal workers and school pupils across parts of Ebonyi State benefitted from a humanitarian outreach that delivered educational materials, school uniforms and encouragement to some of the most vulnerable members of society.

The initiative, carried out by members of the Ruka Movement on her behalf, reflected Nwode’s long-standing commitment to humanitarian service and community engagement.

Reaching Children Where It Matters
One of the highlights of the outreach was a visit to Unity Primary School, Uharaugo Igweledeoha II, where dozens of pupils received newly sewn school uniforms along with exercise books and writing materials.

For many of the children, the gifts were more than just items for school — they represented dignity, belonging and the confidence to learn alongside their peers.

“A uniform may seem small to many, but to a child without one it means confidence, belonging, and the chance to attend school with pride,” Nwode said while reflecting on the gesture.

As part of the initiative, she sponsored the production of 200 school uniforms for pupils in need, reinforcing her belief that every child deserves access to education in an environment that encourages self-worth.

Extending Kindness Across Communities
Beyond the school visit, the outreach extended to several locations in Abakaliki, where artisans, labourers and vulnerable residents received gifts and words of encouragement.

The team visited areas such as Opposite Pa Oruta Township Stadium, Ugwuechara Market, Ahaofu by Quarry Junction, the Old People’s Home along Alo Street, Tipper Garage by Spera-in-Deo, the Rice Mill area and various mechanic sites.

At each stop, the atmosphere was one of gratitude and connection as workers and residents interacted with members of the outreach team.

Service Beyond the Badge
According to Nwode, the outreach was designed to celebrate life through service.

“In commemoration of my birthday, this act of kindness was done to celebrate life by giving hope and smiles to children who need it most,” she said.

For the police spokesperson, policing extends beyond enforcing laws and maintaining order.

“Policing is not only about law enforcement, but about compassion, service and touching lives beyond the badge,” she noted.

A Legacy of Giving
The outreach was coordinated by the leader of the Ruka Movement, Nteoma Chimaobi, who praised members of the organisation for their dedication throughout the two-day programme.

Chimaobi described the exercise as a reflection of Nwode’s enduring commitment to humanitarian causes.

Over the years, he said, she has spearheaded several philanthropic initiatives — from building houses for widows to providing furniture and educational materials for abandoned government schools.

Her efforts have also included distributing school bags, shoes and hundreds of uniforms to pupils across communities.

For Chimaobi and other members of the movement, celebrating Nwode’s birthday through charity highlights a simple but powerful philosophy: the true value of life lies in the positive impact one makes on others.

Gratitude from Beneficiaries
For the beneficiaries, the outreach was more than a symbolic gesture.

Parents, pupils and artisans expressed appreciation, noting that the support would help many children remain in school and continue their education with renewed confidence.

In communities where small acts of kindness can make a significant difference, Nwode’s birthday celebration became a reminder that service — when driven by compassion — can leave lasting footprints in the lives of others.

CrimeBlackmail, Allegations And A Three-year Battle: Police Spokesperson Nwode Speaks by DavidUkah01(op): 5:26pm On Mar 09
Blackmail, Allegations and a Three-Year Battle: Police Spokesperson Nwode Speaks Out

For more than three years, the name of police spokesperson Nkiru Nwode has circulated in online reports, social media posts and public accusations.

Now, the Force Headquarters Annex spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Nwode says the story behind the controversy is very different from what many people believe.

According to Nwode, what began as a routine complaint in January 2023 eventually spiralled into a high-profile dispute involving alleged financial crime, accusations of organ harvesting and a public confrontation with activist Omoyele Sowore.

The complaint that started it all
Nwode recalled that on January 21, 2023, a lawyer, Barrister Nweke, and a woman identified as Onyinye Ekwueme walked into her office with a troubling complaint.

Two brothers — Chibuike and Tochukwu Ekwueme — had reportedly been arrested by a Joint Task Force on January 11, but their family had no information about where they were being held.

Even more alarming, the lawyer alleged that over ₦100 million was being withdrawn from the bank account of one of the detained suspects without the family’s authorisation.

Faced with the complaint, Nwode said she immediately escalated the matter to the then Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Abutu Yaro, who contacted the Anambra State Commissioner of Police at the time, Echeng Echeng.

The commissioner later confirmed that the suspects were in custody at the Rapid Response Squad facility in Awkuzu.

But that confirmation opened the door to an even more complicated investigation.

A trail of missing money
As inquiries deepened, the officer in charge of the RRS Awkuzu unit, Patrick Agbazue, revealed that suspicion had fallen on a serving corps member working in the office — Nnamdi Daniel Emeh — who was believed to have withdrawn funds from the suspect’s account.

Attempts to reach him initially failed.

When he eventually made contact through WhatsApp, Nwode said, Emeh accused Agbazue and other officers of involvement in the alleged theft but refused to appear before investigators, claiming his life was in danger.

Meanwhile, investigators traced about ₦46 million to a First Bank account belonging to a bureau de change operator in Onitsha.

The operator reportedly told police that a man he identified as a DSS officer, Paul Okorie, instructed him to receive the funds and convert them to dollars.

The money was allegedly converted into about $56,000 and delivered through Okorie’s in-law, Obiora Onyedika, a bank employee.

Onyedika was later arrested at his workplace.

According to Nwode, investigators called Okorie on the phone in his presence, during which he allegedly admitted travelling with Emeh to collect the money before later realising the funds were said to have been taken from a suspect’s account.

A court subsequently placed a “Post No Debit” restriction on Okorie’s bank accounts as investigations continued.

From investigation to controversy
While the probe was still ongoing, Nwode said she began facing what she described as coordinated media attacks designed to pressure her into abandoning the case.

Instead, she said she intensified efforts to locate the corps member at the centre of the investigation.

Eventually, she claims, those efforts took her beyond Nigeria’s borders.

“To the glory of God, I personally traced Nnamdi Emeh to the Benin Republic, arrested him, and brought him back to Nigeria to face justice,” she said.

But the controversy surrounding the case did not end there.

Organ-harvesting allegations
Years later, the matter resurfaced in public debate after activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, accused Nwode of being linked to a police-connected organ-harvesting ring.

In a statement addressed to the newly appointed Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, Sowore alleged that Nwode conspired with judicial officials to imprison Emeh after he exposed the alleged crime.

The activist called for an investigation and for what he described as a “sham prosecution” to be discontinued.

“The truth is documented”
Responding to the claims, Nwode insists the allegations are baseless.

According to her, the Nigeria Police Force carried out a full investigation into the organ-harvesting claims in 2023 and found no evidence to support them.

“The outcome clearly established that there was no confirmed evidence of organ harvesting and no evidence linking me to any misconduct,” she said.

She also described it as unfair that her photograph was repeatedly used alongside that of the accuser, saying the allegations had caused reputational damage to her and distress to her family.

“I deserve a medal”
Despite the controversy, Nwode says she remains proud of how she handled the case.

“If I had collected money and refused to pursue the matter, nobody would be blackmailing me today,” she said.

Instead of criticism, she believes the work she did should be recognised.

“I deserve a medal and not blackmail.”

For Nwode, the episode has become a personal example of the pressures faced by public officials — particularly women — who insist on pursuing accountability.

And despite the dispute with Sowore, she says she holds no personal grudge.

“I trust that fairness and truth will always prevail,” she said.

Ebonyi Gov Backs Tinubu's Re-Election, Praises City Boy Movement

Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has commended the City Boy Movement for mobilizing support for President Bola Tinubu's re-election.

The governor stated this while receiving the group's Southeast leaders, led by Chief Obinna Iyiegbu (Obi Cubana), at the Government House in Abakaliki

Nwifuru described the group's efforts as "inspiring" and "encouraging", saying their participation strengthens democracy.

He urged them to balance their political activities with business interests, noting that Ndigbo are increasingly recognizing the importance of active participation in national politics in order to attract federal projects and appointments.

He reiterated his support for President Tinubu’s administration, describing the president’s re-election as an important political objective for Ebonyi State.

Nwifuru also cited federal government projects in the Southeast and the appointment of former Ebonyi State governor, Engineer Dave Umahi, as Minister of Works as evidence of the administration’s commitment to the region. He listed ongoing projects such as the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway, Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, and Aba–Port Harcourt Expressway as key infrastructural developments currently underway in the Southeast.

The Governor also congratulated Ebonyi State Director Enviable Ituma Chukwuemeka and other state leaders, assuring them of government support

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Chief Obinna Iyiegbu, said they came to brief the governor on the activities of the group in the region.

He described the City Boy Movement as a bipartisan political group committed to mobilizing support for President Tinubu’s second term in office.

He said the visit was aimed at paying respects to the governor and affirming that the movement’s activities align with the political direction of the Ebonyi State government.

According to him, several prominent sons of Ebonyi State are actively involved in the movement. He noted that Chukwumeka Ituma, popularly known as Enviable, serves as the State Director of the group, while the Deputy Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon. Chinedu Onah, is the State Coordinator.

The Southeast zonal leadership team also used the opportunity of their visit to Ebonyi State to inaugurate the state leadership of the movement at a well-attended rally. At the event, Chief Iyiegbu charged the hundreds of support groups drawn from wards across the state to actively join the mobilisation efforts for the re-election of President Tinubu.

PoliticsNigeria Youth Organisation, NYO Condemns Campaign Of Calumny Against Umahi, Cal by DavidUkah01(op): 8:05pm On Feb 27
Nigeria Youth Organisation, NYO condemns campaign of calumny against Umahi, calls for probe

The Nigeria Youth Organisation (NYO) has expressed deep concern over online videos and social media commentaries against Works Minister, Sen David Umahi by one Mrs. Tracy Ohiri which it said was aimed at discrediting him.

The organization said in one of the videos currently trending across multiple digital platforms, Mrs. Ohiri made remarks which not only sought to malign the Minister but also extended disparaging commentary towards the prosecutorial authority involved in ongoing legal processes, going as far as describing the prosecutor as a criminal.

In a statement signed by its President, Okorie C. Okorie and Secretary, Oluwabukunmi Awolola , the organization observed that a careful review of the said publications reveals speeches that are largely incoherent and videos that are inconsistent in both content and presentation.

"Notably, the commentator has also been inconsistent with respect to the dates and figures of money allegedly owed — at one instance alleging a sum of ₦25,000,000 and at another ₦250,000,000, while also variously referencing timelines of 3 years, 9 years and 12 years — thereby raising further concerns as to the credibility of the claims being propagated in the public space.

"While the Nigeria Youth Organisation respects the constitutional right of every Nigerian to freedom of expression, we strongly condemn the growing trend of reckless, unsubstantiated and potentially coordinated online attacks targeted at public officials who are actively engaged in national development efforts.

"We advise Nigerians to exercise caution in consuming digital content and to refrain from believing everything encountered online without undertaking basic and responsible verification.

"We are particularly concerned by the timing, pattern and amplification of these commentaries, which raise legitimate questions as to whether such publications are spontaneous expressions of opinion or part of a sponsored attempt to distract and undermine the ongoing infrastructural reforms being championed by the Honourable Minister of Works. Nigerians must guard against being swayed by sentiment and emotional manipulation capable of distorting objective public discourse.

"If indeed Mrs. Tracy Nicholas Ohiri believes she has a valid cause of action against the Honourable Minister, the appropriate forum for ventilating such grievances remains a court of competent jurisdiction and not the court of social media opinion.

"Senator Engr. David Nweze Umahi has, since assumption of office, distinguished himself through measurable performance in the execution and revitalisation of critical road infrastructure across the federation. His stewardship in the works sector has attracted commendation from stakeholders across professional, civic and youth constituencies. He undoubtedly deserves accolades for the giant strides he has recorded so far rather than the vilification arising from sponsored emotional and blackmailing contents.

"At a time when Nigeria requires focused leadership and sustained commitment towards economic recovery through infrastructural development, the Nigeria Youth Organisation considers any deliberate attempt to derail performing public servants through orchestrated misinformation campaigns as deeply regrettable and inimical to national progress.

"Accordingly, we call on the relevant security and regulatory agencies to investigate the origin, intent and possible sponsorship behind these trending publications in order to ascertain whether they form part of a coordinated digital misinformation campaign designed to discredit a serving public official and impede ongoing developmental initiatives.

"The Nigeria Youth Organisation wishes to reiterate its unwavering support for accountability, due process and responsible civic engagement. However, such engagement must be pursued within the bounds of decency, truth and national interest.

"For the avoidance of doubt, Nigerian youths will resist any attempt to coerce or pressure the Honourable Minister into making any form of payment outside the dictates of the law, and should any such payment be made without due judicial pronouncement, we shall not hesitate to seek appropriate legal redress in a court of competent jurisdiction", the organization said.

Umahi's Office Slams Sowore's Viral Video as Misleading, Says Police Act on Petition

The Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Umahi, has denied deploying the police to settle a personal score with businesswoman Tracynither Nicolas Ohiri, describing a viral video by Omoyele Sowore as "misleading".

Francis Nwaze, Senior Special Assistant to the Minister, stated that the police acted on a petition by Umahi's lawyer, inviting him for statements as part of standard procedure.

Ohiri alleges Umahi owes her ₦250 million for campaign materials and claims she was arrested and detained in Abuja after refusing to date him.

Nwaze accused Sowore of "attempting to dramatise a lawful investigative process" and described his actions as "performative activism". The police investigation is ongoing, with Umahi's office maintaining the Minister respects due process.
The Statement reads:

VIRAL VIDEO BY OMOYELE SOWORE INVOLVING THE MINISTER OF WORKS AT POLICE HQ TODAY

"The Media Office of the Honourable Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Umahi, CON has taken note of a video currently being circulated by Omoyele Sowore, in which he attempts to publicly confront and provoke the Minister over a matter already before the appropriate authorities".

"For clarity and public record, the allegations being referenced by Mr. Sowore were made by one Mrs. Tracy Ohiri and have been in the public space since last year. These claims, bordering on alleged assault and unpaid campaign materials, have been repeatedly published through social media videos and writings".

"It is important to state that her accounts have been inconsistent, contradictory, and lacking coherence, a fact that has been widely observed by members of the public who have followed the matter over time".

"Contrary to the misleading narrative being pushed by Sowore, the Honourable Minister did not deploy the police to settle any personal score. The Nigeria Police Force, acting within its constitutional mandate to maintain law and order and investigate complaints, acted on a petition submitted by the Minister’s lawyer, arrested her and invited the Honourable Minister in line with standard procedure for statements".

"Mr. Sowore’s attempt to dramatize this lawful process by staging a public spectacle is a familiar pattern of performative activism aimed at gaining attention rather than seeking truth. The Honourable Minister, consistent with his character and respect for due process, declined to be drawn into theatrics and calmly disengaged".

"As it stands, the matter is under police investigation, where facts will determine the outcome".

"Activism, in its true sense, is not about indiscriminate attacks on public office holders or chasing relevance. It is about integrity, balance, and a genuine commitment to justice without prejudice or personal bias".

"The Honourable Minister of Works remains fully committed to transparency, respect to the rule of law, and the uninterrupted delivery of critical infrastructure for the benefit of Nigerians. He will continue to respect institutional processes and will not be distracted by calculated provocations". The Statement Stated.

Ebonyi: Sen. Nwebonyi Lauded for Mbeke Ishieke Market Revamp Amidst Community Praise

Major stakeholders of Ishieke Mgbomeze Kingdom, particularly Mbeke Ishieke Community, have commended Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi
the Senate Deputy Chief Whip and Senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District, for his remarkable developmental strides, especially the ongoing remodeling of the Nwori Isophumini Mbeke Ishieke Market.

The stakeholders made this known during an enlarged stakeholders meeting at Community Secondary School, Mbeke, convened by Ebonyi Local Government Chairman, Prince Chinedu Uburu to address concerns raised by some individuals opposed to the remodeling process.

Some individuals from Isophumini village had petitioned the chairman, alleging that Senator Nwebonyi was forcefully taking their lands. The petition had led to tensions in the area.

Prince Uburu described the project as a welcome development, noting that the process must be harmonized to instill confidence in shop owners.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Dr. Mathew Nwobashi, stated that the land was formally acquired in line with the Land Use Act and that affected shop owners were duly notified about the remodeling.

He urged the community to embrace the sweeping development initiatives taking place.

Senator Nwebonyi who was represented by the Member 1 in Ebonyi State Civil Service Commission, Chief Chris Uchaji noted that he has vowed to transform Mbeke Ishieke community into one of the best satellite towns in Nigeria through the remodeling of the Nwori market and other critical infrastructures because charity begins at home adding that other parts of Ebonyi North zone are receiving equal attention. He called on the people to corporate with the contractor to ensure speedy delivery of the projects.

Representing the Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, the Principal Secretary to the Governor, Chief Mathias Adum, noted that the remodeling became necessary due to the ongoing construction of Trunk A Road and other social amenities attracted to the area by Senator Nwebonyi. He called on all dissenting voices to unite for the collective progress of the community.

In separate remarks, the Commissioner for Border Peace and Conflict Resolution, Prof. Paul Awo Nwobashi; Member I of the Ebonyi State Secondary Education Board, Chief Laz Eze; Coordinator of Mbeke Development Centre, Hon. Franklin Nwugwu; the Traditional Ruler of Mbeke Autonomous Community, HRH Eze Peter Ukpamazi; and the Town Union President, Sunday Ogboso, all expressed appreciation to Governor Nwifuru and Senator Nwebonyi for their development initiatives.

Stakeholders appealed for calm and unity, emphasizing that development often comes with initial challenges.

The meeting which was attended by community leaders, traditional rulers, and government officials resolved to support the realization of the project and urged dissenting voices to support the lawmaker for more development .

The Nzuko Edda General Assembly has called on the Ebonyi State Government and security agencies to swiftly apprehend and prosecute suspected Amasiri warlords involved in the recent attack on Okporojo community in Edda Local Government Area.

The Assembly made this demand following an emergency meeting of traditional rulers, village chiefs, and town union Presidents from Edda's autonomous communities and 72 villages, held under the auspices of Nzuko Edda General Assembly at Osisioma Playground, Edda.

The meeting responded to what it described as unprovoked violence that claimed several lives and destroyed properties.

Reading a communiqué, His Royal Highness Ezeogo Charles Azuenya, Owu XII of Ebunwana Edda, lamented the persistent attacks on villages in Idima Autonomous Community, including Okporojo, Akanto, Ozara-Oko-Ugwu, Nde-Oko, and Amaiyima.

"Our people can no longer remain silent while lives, homes, and dignity are being systematically destroyed. The situation has reached a critical point," Azuenya said.

He alleged that over 75 indigenes of Edda communities have been killed in the past three years, with dozens of homes burnt and entire villages displaced.

The latest invasion of Okporojo on January 29, 2026, marked a dangerous escalation, resulting in fresh killings, abductions, and destruction of the community. "At least four indigenes were brutally murdered in their homes, while three were reportedly beheaded. This level of cruelty is unacceptable and must not go unanswered," he stated.

The monarch acknowledged Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru's efforts in promoting peace but accused the Amasiri community of disregarding government directives.

The assembly appealed to the state government to deploy security personnel, rebuild destroyed communities, resettle displaced residents, and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.

"The recent invasion of Okporojo village on 29th January, 2026, resulting in further killings, abductions, and the complete destruction of Okporojo village, is a clear and further escalation of hostilities that cannot go unanswered. At least four indigenes of Okporojo and Ogiri were brutally killed in their homes with three of them beheaded by Amasiri people. Amasiri, again, rejoiced home with the heads of three sons of Edda, perhaps, as trophies they have won".

"Despite the State Governor's personal interventions and calls for peace, Amasiri has displayed a blatant disregard for government directives. Their defiance not only undermines the authority of government but also places the safety and security of Edda Clan, especially Edda villages in Idima autonomous community in jeopardy".

"This naked impunity and violence has created a climate of skepticism on the minds of our people as to what has become of the good intentions of government about our people. Let it once again be known tha Edda has, indeed, exercised maximum restraint out of our respect for rule of law and government. Edda Clan and indeed our villages in Idima autonomous Community can no longer live in the shadow of constant killings and threats".

"We implore the government of Ebonyi State to take decisive and immediate actions to: Protect Okporojo and other villages in Idima autonomous Community;
"Rebuild and resettle the displaced people of Okporojo and other villages rendered homeless and driven away by Amasiri people from their ancestral homes. Government should come to the immediate rescue of the displaced people of Okporojo;

"Ensure the safety of our people and provide necessary security measures to prevent further attacks;.
Hold Perpetrators Accountable by implementing strict measures against those responsible for the violence, including the initiation of legal proceedings against members of the Amasiri militia and their leaders" the Assembly stated.

The President General of Oso Edda Development Union, Mr. Ama Eba Eme, described the incident as horrific, urging authorities to restore peace. "We appeal to the government and security agencies to act fast. Our people deserve safety, justice, and the opportunity to return to their homes," Eme said.

Abakaliki to Get Steady Water Supply by Q1 2026 - Commissioner Nkah

The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Chinedum Magnus Nkah, has assured residents of Abakaliki and its environs that the era of water scarcity will soon be over, stating that by the first quarter of next year, steady water supply will be restored across the capital city.

Hon. Nkah gave the assurance on Thursday during an inspection visit to the Low Lift Station of the Old Abakaliki Water Scheme, describing the project as one of the signature interventions of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s administration.

He recalled that when the governor inspected the facility about a year ago, it had been heavily vandalized, with most of the infrastructure dating back to the Jim Nwobodo era rendered nonfunctional.

“I can assure you that by the first quarter of next year, the story of water scarcity will be over in Abakaliki urban.

"This project is a strong testament to the governor’s commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises,” he said.

The commissioner explained that the ministry has received the necessary pumping equipment and is currently concluding the installation of a new engine and transformer at the Low Lift Station, after which water reticulation will commence.

Hon. Nkah also disclosed that efforts are underway to expand water sources in the state.

According to him, work is ongoing to add two new sources to the Ezillo Water Scheme, while piping for the Ishiagu Water Scheme is expected to begin in the next fiscal year.

He added that clearing has been completed at the Ukawu Water Scheme to enable full-scale work in 2026.

“You can agree with me that His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has delivered on his promises within the limits of available resources.

"In the next one year, Ebonyians will forget everything about water scarcity,” the commissioner stressed.

He also noted that the state government is working to secure areas affected by ongoing construction, especially places where water infrastructure passes through residential settlements.

Hon. Nkah appealed to residents of Abakaliki and surrounding communities to connect water to their homes, as government is determined to restore adequate supply to all parts of the metropolis.
