Foreign Affairs / Netherlands Cabinet Resigned Due To Government Failure by Davisgrey(m): 6:31pm On Jan 15, 2021
Dutch Rutte's government resigns over child welfare fraud scandal

After a Friday cabinet meeting the Dutch leader cycled to the palace to submit the government's resignation to King Willem-Alexander

Mark Rutte's government has stepped down after thousands of families were wrongly accused of child welfare fraud and told to pay money back.

Families suffered an "unparalleled wrong", Dutch MPs decided, with tax officials, politicians, judges and civil servants leaving them powerless.

Many of those affected were from an immigrant background and hundreds were plunged into financial difficulty.

Mr Rutte submitted the cabinet's resignation to the king.

"Innocent people have been criminalised and their lives ruined," he then told reporters, adding that responsibility for what had gone wrong lay with the cabinet. "The buck stops here."

According to one of the parents
"You're a single mother with three children aged eight to 11. You hit rock-bottom financially and think what now? My children and I sometimes had to go to bed without food"
Dulce Gonçalves Tavares

The "unanimous" decision, taken at a cabinet meeting in The Hague, comes at a key moment in the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Netherlands has gone into lockdown and ministers have been considering stiffer measures to halt the spread of infection.

The government will stay on in a caretaker role to tackle the pandemic until parliamentary elections in March but Economics Minister Eric Wiebes has quit with immediate effect for his role in the scandal. Asked whether the cabinet's resignation was merely symbolic, Mr Rutte was adamant that it was not.

"This is about tens of thousands of parents who were crushed under the wheels of the state. There can be no doubt, this is a colossal stain". Opined PM Mark Rutte.

This is not the first time a Dutch government has resigned en masse in a gesture of collective responsibility. In 2002, the cabinet stood down after a report criticised ministers and the military for failing to prevent the massacre of Muslims at Srebrenica during the Bosnian war seven years earlier.

Travel / A Man Used Snake As Facemask In Bus (pics) by Davisgrey(m): 11:38pm On Sep 16, 2020
A man boarded a bus using a snake as a face covering.

The commuter and his reptilian mask, which was wrapped around his neck and mouth, were seen on a bus from Swinton to Manchester on Monday.
One passenger, said she thought the passenger was wearing a "funky mask" until she spotted it slithering over hand rails.

Transport bosses in Greater Manchester confirmed a snake was not a valid face covering.
The eyewitness, who asked to remain anonymous, said she found the incident "really funny", adding the animal did not seem to be bothering any of her fellow passengers.
She said: "No-one batted an eyelid."

Transport for Greater Manchester said a snake was not a valid face covering
Using a face covering on public transport is mandatory, except for children under the age of 11 or those who are exempt for health or disability reasons.

A Transport for Greater Manchester spokesperson said: "Government guidance clearly states that this needn't be a surgical mask, and that passengers can make their own or wear something suitable, such as a scarf or bandana.
"While there is a small degree of interpretation that can be applied to this, we do not believe it extends to the use of snakeskin - especially when still attached to the snake."

Music/Radio / Britney Spear's Sister Seeks Control Of Her Finances by Davisgrey(m): 8:59am On Aug 28, 2020
Britney Spears' sister is seeking more control over the star's fortune, in an increasingly tense battle over the singer's legal guardianship.

Jamie Lynn Spears already has some say over her sister's finances after being named a trustee of her estate in 2018.

In a court filing last week, she asked for control of money stored in a trust fund set up for Britney's children.

She requested the money be moved into accounts for which she is the custodian.

If approved, it would transfer the financial assets of the fund to those accounts and require a judge's approval to release them.

Britney Spears' finances are currently controlled by her father, James Spears, who has been his daughter's legal conservator for more than a decade due to concerns around her mental health.

He temporarily stepped aside from the role overseeing her personal affairs in 2019, citing his own health problems.

Some of Spears' fans believe she was forced into the arrangement, and have been running a #FreeBritney campaign.

Jamie Lynn Spears has now asked that all the assets of the SJB Revocable Trust be moved into one or more accounts with Fidelity Brokerage Services, which she controls.

The trust fund was established by the singer in 2004 to protect her children's future.

The new court filing does not explain what role it could play in the singer's protracted conservatorship case.

Such an arrangement is usually granted for individuals who are unable to make their own decisions, such as those with dementia or some other mental health difficulties.

For the last 12 years, Britney's father and attorney have managed her assets and personal life - including being able to restrict her visitors and communicate with doctors about her treatment.

That conservatorship has been extended to 2021 despite the singer's lawyers telling the court earlier this month that she is "strongly opposed" to her father remaining the sole conservator of her personal and financial well-being.

The conservatorship was set up when the star began behaving erratically in 2007 after her divorce from Kevin Federline, and she lost custody of their two children (although she has frequent visits).

In January 2019, she abruptly cancelled a Las Vegas residency before checking into a mental health facility.
Education / Re: FG Kicks-off Modified Home Grown School Feeding Programme In Lagos by Davisgrey(m): 1:57pm On May 22, 2020
As a Policy Analyst, having thoroughly scrutinized the National Home Grown Feeding Programme (NHGFP) a scheme of the Social Investment Programme (SIP) under the auspices of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs of the FGN, here are my unambiguous suppositions:

1. Instead of food for pupils, why not enable the parents, whose sole responsibility is to care for their wards? When guardians are empowered with the facilities to create wealth, we don't necessarily have to rape the treasury to do the same thing. It's just like using one stone to kill two birds.

2. Might the need for this programme be to care for the orphans, fatherless, primitive and destitute who do not have guardians and cannot afford necessities of life? Then a more comprehensive program would make for this shortfall other than the NHGFP, where these ones can be identified and enlisted in different care homes. These orphanages would be more efficient with the government being a major sponsor.

PS: I do not cast aspersions with the above views neither are they to ridicule the efforts of the FGN. This is simply to underscore how many of our programmes can be improved on and how they can be more efficient instead of the spending spree of billions we keep hearing on radio.
Remember, I'm strongly apolitical and a neutralist.
