‘Pirate’ Android TV Box Sellers Raided By Police

Sellers of Android boxes loaded with software enabling the free viewing of movies, TV shows and live sports have been raided this week by UK authorities. Trading Standards officers, police and representatives from Sky TV carried out raids in several locations, causing other sellers to quickly reconsider the tone of their marketing efforts.

kodiWhile paying subscriptions to services such as Netflix, premium satellite and cable channels, sports broadcasters and PPV outlets are legitimate ways to obtain content on a TV, there are others that require very little outlay.

Apple TV boxes, Android set-top boxes and even the lowly Raspberry PI can run software such as Kodi (previously XBMC) alongside third-party addons to provide all of the above at virtually zero cost. Unsurprisingly, this annoys content providers no end.

While selling any of the above devices alone is entirely legal, over the past couple of years online markets such as eBay and Amazon have been flooded with “fully loaded” boxes (Android-based in particular) that enable free viewing of anything from first run movies to live sports.

Surprisingly, many vendors have been happy to publicly advertise that fact, with many apparently under the impression that if they don’t provide the illegal content themselves then they aren’t liable. In the UK that argument is unlikely to fly and during the past week patience appears to have run out.

Earlier this week Trading Standards officers and police carried out raids on sellers of Android boxes setup to receive unauthorized content. One seller, operating from GeekyKit.com, told customers that his physical shops would not be trading as normal.

“As you may be aware we were visited yesterday by Sky [television] in conjunction with Trading Standards. Whilst we continue to investigate our position the stores will remain closed and support will remain suspended. Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused,” he explained.

“We do not control the content that is accessible on the internet via the product that we sell. We are currently working with Trading Standards to ensure that we can sell our products whilst adhering to UK copyright laws.”

Although no details on changes were provided by GeekyKit, the signs on the front of one of their shops will be the first thing to go after leaving little to the imagination

Kodi, the open source media player that so many love, has been entirely removed from the Amazon Appstore. The app was never available on the Fire TV appstore, but a few months ago, it was surprisingly approved by the Amazon Appstore for smartphones and tablets. I say surprisingly because Kodi is not in, and has never been in, the Google Play Store nor the Apple Appstore. The reasons for this are complicated, but they stem from licensing issues and Kodi’s open source nature. It’s unclear at this time why Kodi was removed and whether or not it will return.

Even though the app was never available in the Fire TV appstore, having it in the Amazon Appstore in some form allowed Fire TV owners to take advantage of a bug which caused the app to appear on the Fire TV’s homescreen, even when the app was sideloaded. I’ve been seeing word (and was in the process of confirming) that this bug had been squashed with the latest software update. Those who haven’t updated their Fire TV device to the latest software version were still able to launch Kodi from the homescreen due to its existence in the Amazon appstore.

If you’ve purchased Kodi from the Amazon Appstore in the past, it is still associated with your Amazon account, and therefore, will still appear on the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick homescreen’s “Recent” section if you’re running an older software version. Do not delete Kodi from your account using Amazon’s “Apps and Devices” page or you will not be able to repurchase it. Uninstalling it from your Fire TV or Fire TV Stick will not affect its association with your Amazon account, so uninstalling is safe to do.

DSTV started before them all and bought all the content exclusively leaving them with left overs. If we continue lauding DSTV, things will never change. The yearly price increase will continue. For me, I am determined to cure myself of the madness for EPL. I will only go to watch my team play in the weekend games or watch very important matches via Kodi.

Im not a lover of BPL too, but follow German football religiously, which is why i bought speedHD that time cos Canal+ in france has the right to German league and all European qualifiers on Sport+ channel. I dont need EPL. The channel that shows bundesliga on DSTV is Super sport 7 and sometimes, they leave it for SS5. I heard startimes just got the right to air bundesliga to WA sub region. Im yet to confirm. If its true, it means theyll be showing a match on friday, one on Saturday and another one on Sunday. 3 matches per week. DSTV currently has 5 matches per week but they sometimes failed to air more than 3 live matches and show others as delayed.

If you are so interested in local content and channels, Startimes has so many of them. I am not so interested in them though but Startimes has IROKO Play and Iroko Plus, AMc series, Amc movies, Orisun,Cool Tv, Wazobia Tv, Tiwan Tiwan,Awa Tv , Wap Tv . All local channels with local movies, local entertainment and Nollywood

I agree but i cant trade any yoruba channel for AM yoruba. Orisun is a step down. Dont know about Iroko TV yet.
AMagic Showcase and Urban are the bomb for me oo. Until i get startimes, i will love local content on DSTV. DSTV also do not have more MITV , AIT, Channels, STV and NTA. Startimes has more local Nigerian channels.

With that kind of money you are spending, you can afford to get DSTV premium plus French , asian and German addons, and still add Startimes and ACTV on the side. IPTV is expensive unless you want to watch selected matches per week and even at that, each match takes about 500mb (Cause most stream in HD). IPTV is very attractive but the huge cost of Internet is a problem. If one knows any Internet connection that can give unlimited per month, at affordable price, please share.
