PoliticsRe: 'All Nigerians Are Corrupt', Says Oprah Winfrey by dblock(m): 10:07am On Jul 27, 2007
Every one is entitled to their opinion, but to say that all Nigerians are is corrupt, is Prejudice.

Such a statement cannot be condoned or tolerated.

Nigerians should abstain from viewing her show, and the Nigerian Government Should ban the viewing of the show in Nigeria.

This is not a blatant idea, because I firmly believe that labeling a whole population negatively is as bad as Adolf Hitler executing Jews.

You wouldn't call all Chinese people thieves, because you knew a Chinese man that stole something of yours.

This is a serious issue, and Oprah should be made to apologize.

If someone like Obafemi Martins was to call all Britons rouges, He would probably be fired.

No true Nigerian would condone what Oprah has said.

If you are going to condone what Oprah as said, then you must not be African.

She probably made the statement because she is still suffering from the aftermath of her childhood rape.

@ Bani

So you've finally learnt about clever acronyms.

I mean there are so many "clever" acronyms around these days

Such as; Problem Has Changed Name (PHCN) or the good Old Never Expect Power Always.

Never any inspiring or positive acronyms.

If the ATM's are so bad, why don't you stop using the things. it's not as if financial transactions became a reality because of the invention of Automated Teller Machines. grin

Police: Lebanese man killed in Nigeria

PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria (AP) - A Lebanese businessman was shot dead in his home early Friday in oil-rich southern Nigeria, police said.

In a separate incident Friday evening in Port Harcourt, several gunmen in a minibus opened fire near a white truck containing several foreign workers in an apparent attempt to kidnap them, an Associated Press reporter who witnessed the incident said.

Police escorting the expatriates returned fire as scores of Nigerian civilians fled the scene, abandoning their vehicles in the middle of one of the city's busiest roads. It was not immediately clear if there were any casualties or who the expatriates worked for.

State police spokeswoman Irejua Barasua called attack on the Lebanese businessmen in central Port Harcourt an attempted kidnapping, but did not say why police believed the assailants were trying to abduct the man.

Barasua said a nearby police station was attacked shortly afterward, and three officers were wounded by gunfire. It was not immediately clear whether the incidents were related. Barasua did not provide further details.

A friend of the family, who asked not to be identified for security reasons, said the man initially had come to Nigeria to work as a carpenter for a large company, but had decided to set up a business of his own. The friend said he thought a kidnap attempt was unlikely.

Kidnappings and oil rig attacks have become common in the southern river delta region of Africa's largest crude producer, where oil giants like Royal Dutch Shell PLC (NYSE:RDS A) , ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) and Eni SpA (NYSE:E) have large operations. The assailants range from militants demanding political concessions to criminal gangs seeking ransoms.

More than 150 foreigners have been seized in the region so far this year, as well as many Nigerians. About a dozen remain in captivity. Those taken hostage have typically been released unharmed, though some have reported being beaten, and a Belarusian woman was shot in the knee and held for more than a week without medical attention.

Police officers have been killed in a number of attacks or attempted kidnappings.

Arrests are rare, even though the kidnappings and bombings have cut production in Nigeria by about a quarter, helping to drive up oil prices worldwide.

I just can't understand how people can kill themselves because of Arabian Mythology.

Last time I checked, Nigerians aren't Arabs.

Why are we concerning ourselves with fables from war torn countries.

Like they say, birds of a feather flock together, so perhaps people, relating with Middle Eastern Religions or Cultures, are obliviously subjecting themselves to the problems of the Middle East.

If some uneducated fools in Nigeria want to kill themselves because of opposite Islamic sects, then why can't they just organize for a detour to Iraq when they are going to Mecca.

It is pure stupidity. Does Islam put bread on the table. What have the Arabs ever done for Nigeria.

They forcibly established their mythology upon our people and thus induced pain and misery upon our people.

MOSCOW, July 19 (Reuters) - Soccer news in brief from around the world:

*Lokomotiv Moscow have signed Nigeria striker Peter Odemwingie on a four-year contract from French club Lille, a spokesman for the Russian Premier League side confirmed on Thursday.

Odemwingie, 25, who was born in Uzbekistan and has dual Nigerian and Russian citizenship, had been negotiating with Spartak Moscow before agreeing a deal with their rivals.

According to French media reports, Lokomotiv have agreed to pay around 10.0 million euros for Odemwingie.

*Everton striker James Vaughan will miss the start of the Premier League season after suffering a dislocated shoulder in Wednesday night's pre-season friendly at Preston North End.

Alan Irvine, Everton's assistant manager, told the club Web site (www.evertonfc.com) that the 19-year-old Vaughan, the Premier League's youngest ever scorer, would be sidelined for "months rather than weeks".

Sunnis, Shiites Clash in Nigeria, 2 Dead

By AMINU BELLO
The Associated Press
Thursday, July 19, 2007; 1:17 PM

SOKOTO, Nigeria -- A man was beaten to death by a mob in northern Nigeria as Muslim sects clashed after the shooting of a popular cleric, witnesses said Thursday. The cleric later died.

Soldiers and police set up roadblocks and patrolled the streets with rifles and tear gas in response to the violence.

An Associated Press reporter saw the body of the man, who was accused in Wednesday's shooting of Sunni cleric Umar Danshiya at a mosque in the capital of the desert state of Sokoto. The cleric was well-known for his anti-Shiite sermons.

Nura Muhammad, who was taking Danshiya home by motorbike taxi after morning prayers, said three gunmen on motorbikes shot the cleric in the head.

Later, a mob of Danshiya's followers wielding sticks and machetes attacked several Shiites in retaliation.

The sultan of Sokoto, the spiritual head of Nigeria's Muslims, said Danshiya had died Thursday morning after lapsing into a coma. Sultan Mohammadu Sa'ad Abubakar appealed for calm, saying on local radio: "Do not take the law into your own hands , the security agencies are investigating."

At the news of Danshiya's death, some supporters cut tree branches with machetes and fixed them to their vehicles, a common form of protest in Nigeria.

Nigeria's 140 million people are roughly equally divided between Muslims and Christians and the country has frequent ethnic and religious clashes. Thousands of people have been killed since the end of military rule eight years ago. Residents say that ethnic or political differences are often exploited by powerful locals for economic and political reasons.

Most Nigerian Muslims are Sunni, as are most Muslims throughout the world. The Sunni-Shiite doctrinal split dates to the early days of Islam.

The Niger Delta crisis isn't as bad as it is made out to be.

People make it look like the most unsafe place in Africa, when in Johannesburg in South Africa, there's an average of 50 Murders, 148 rape cases and 700 violent assaults reported daily.

Lagos is not even that bad.

Those statistics are from a Travel warning, that was recently issued to Kenyan Citizens.

PoliticsRe: Nigeria Ranked 2nd Poorest Nation in the World by dblock(m): 8:27am On Jul 18, 2007
Saying Nigeria is the second poorest county in the world, is like saying that America is the richest country in the world.

Nigeria has the second largest economy in Sub Saharan Africa, but Nigeria is certainly not rich.

America has the world's largest economy, but America is certainly not the richest country in the world. (Their Poverty Rate is not to different from that of developing countries).

Tis Propaganda, Yes Nigeria is poor, but to make a such a statement, is ridiculous especially when it cannot be backed by factual evidence.
BusinessRe: Dangote: I'm Worth Much More Than Oprah Winfrey! by dblock(m): 7:51am On Jul 18, 2007
If Oprah is worth 1.5 Billion as he stated, then I see no reason why he shouldn't compare himself to her. Because he has been projected to be worth between 4 Billion dollars and 10 Billion Dollars.

His statement should not be taken out of context. He made the statement, in regards to Forbes refusal to rate the wealth of himself and other Africans.

If that is egocentric, then we are all Egocentric and thus we would all be hypocritical to judge him.

Like it says in the good book, whosoever is free of sin should cast the first stone.

His statement wasn't a boast, it was a wail. It was the wail of the Marginalized black Race.
