The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Republic of China have commenced talks on the construction of the coastal rail system across the country, which is expected to gulp $15bn, (N2.6trn).

When completed, the coastal rail system, which is expected to connect Lagos, South West, South East and South-South up to the northern parts of the country, will further boost the nation’s Gross Domestic Product.

President Goodluck Jonathan, who made disclosure, spoke at the ground breaking ceremony for the shipyard and official commissioning of the Nigerian Maritime University established by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency NIMASA, located at Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South Local Government of Delta State, at he weekend.

According to him, the establishment of such coastal rail systems, which will be integrated into the other modes of transport had become necessary in order to improve communication in the country and therefore contribute significantly in further improving Nigeria’s GDP, which was rebased recently.

The President, who was reacting to the request by the President of the Ijaw Youth Congress, Comrade Evans Eradiara for the establishment of coastal roads linking Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers and other coastal states said that the building of the coastal rail system, which will gulp between $12-$15bn dominated discussions with the Prime Minister of China, who just left the country at the end of the Economic Forum.

“We are not talking about coastal roads alone but also coastal rail system because roads alone cannot solve our problems. For you to provide a mass transit system for the movement of people and heavy equipment, you must have an efficient rail system”, he said.

The President also said: “Without development, we cannot get anywhere. Until we have effective rail system, we cannot talk of effective mass transport system and if we achieve this, it will improve communication in the country and also improve the nation’s GDP”.

The President had told the Ijaw community that though there is relative peace in the region, there are still many criminal elements and therefore warned that the government will not condone any form of criminality any longer.

The reason why you guys get these crappy seats in the first place, is because you never show up to any of the matches.

Everytime the Ghanaians and Jamaicans and everyone else buy more tickets. Are Nigerians just cheap or bad supporters?

When I used to frequent this forum, I thought the forumers were dumb....but the level things are at now...is on another level entirely.

Every thing is end time tinz and first to comment. Is it because schools in Nigeria are striking? Or is it because the average age on here is 6 years?

yuzedo: "BRT" in Abuja? I know GEJ brought facebook to Nigeria but did he also bring BRT (LASG initiative)?? undecided

BRT is not a LASG initiative. It is a global type of transit.

Bus Rapid Transit,,,,however Lagos is the only city in Nigeria that has implemented it and one of the few cities in Africa to have it.

Yes other States in Nigeria such as Enugu, Delta etc have Bus transit, but it is not Bus Rapid Transit.

So you are right that Lagos is the only city that has it in Nigeria, but IT IS NOT a LASG concept.

Politics / Re: Oshiomhole Cant Ban Okada For He Belongs To The Working-Class, by dblock(m): 10:12pm On Nov 22, 2012
texazzpete:

Tell me how banning Okada will bring development.

Shouldn't the transport sector development/rejuvenation be in place BEFORE banning Okadas?

Unfortunately, Fashola erred grievously but putting the cart before the horse.

ACN supporters are rank hypocrites. You blame the FG for removing subsidy before fixing refineries yet hail Fashola for banning Okada without putting in place modern transportation facilities.

You are a nitwit of the highest order. It is provincial minded, morons such as yourself that hold this country back. Your simplistic assertion, is so disconcerting, that I am not sure if you are a member of the ape family or a homo Sapien. One should be able to grasp that by putting in place the Bus Rapid Transit, LagBus and extending the road network, bridges and major expressways, Fashola has already created a model that has tremendously impacted upon traffic in the state.

One should note that - in Nigeria there is adaptability. When one option is eliminated, other options emerge. So certainly, Okada is not the only option available, which is something that morons like yourself are oblivious to. Look at what occurred in Abuja, certainly options will arise. Now you need to look at the true negatives of Okada. Most of the Okada riders are not qualified to be on the road and most traffic incidents in the state, involve Okada riders!

Lagos cannot have a sane and functional transport network, without the removal of this mode of transport. It is a highly inefficient mode of transport, highly chaotic and quite backward. These Okada operators are also organized and can even be deemed as a criminal network; they have defied the law on numerous occasions and with regards to traffic laws, they have no regard for them.

If it is truly an employment opportunity, or a transport alternative that is sorely needed, then like I said, there will be adaptation. Lagos is the most dynamic state in Nigeria, it is the most diversified economy in Lagos and the most capable of withstanding such a ban. One cannot compare it to the situation in Edo State for example.

I would trust, you consider these points carefully, before exposing yourself as a mentally impaired simpleton.

Politics / I Think I Know What Boko Haram Want! by dblock(m): 8:58am On Jan 03, 2012
I started thinking about all the peculiarities of the situation, I started thinking about everything that Boko Haram has demanded. All the stances they have taken, the people they have attacked. The people they have fallen out with, their stance against negotiation, the people they have possibly interacted with. I started thinking about the situations that they have involved themselves with and I started thinking about other Islamic entities in the Greater Middle East and it all started to bear resemblance and make sense.

1) Notice how Boko Haram have called for the Islamization of Northern Nigeria, but not the entire Nigerian federation
2) Notice how they have not only attacked Christians, but also Moderate Muslims and Government outfits
3) They have attacked Security apparel and Military outposts
4) They have not been open to negotiation
5) They fell out with North Eastern politicians
6) They have possibly interacted with Al Shabab and foreign assistance is irrefutable
7) They have recently called for the expulsion of Christians from Northern Nigeria
cool They have attacked foreigners and a foreign agency
9) They have attacked the seat of power in Abuja
10) Their popularized name Boko Haram means "Western Education is a sin"
11) They are radical in nature
12) They are religious in nature, albeit superficially and have stated that "Nigeria belongs to Allah"
13) They perceive the Nigerian Government as their enemies - both the Christian & Muslim Governments
14) Contrary to myths that Boko Haram is created for Northern political empowerment, Boko Haram has been around for decades in other forms and Maitatsine for example resulted in the deaths of thousands in the 1980s
15) The group has attacked on symbolic days and strategically to undermined the Nigerian Government
16) The group is perhaps trying to exhaust the options of the Nigerian Government

Conclusion

Boko Haram is not trying to wrestle power for the North or empower the Northern Nigerian elite - Boko Haram are no longer affiliated with these politicians. Boko Haram are seeking to create an Islamic Northern Nigeria in which they will have political power and supremacy. Much the same way that Al Shabab has control over parts of Somalia and much the same way that Tehreek-e-Nafaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi, Taliban (Pakistan) & Al-Qaeda have control over North West Pakistan.

Boko Haram are interested in political power themselves, they do not feel victimized by the Jonathan Administration solely, but by a long list of Governments including their state Governments and previous administrations. They are not interested in negotiation and are more than likely trying to actualize their objectives through strategic planning. They will most likely seek to exhaust the options of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They believe that Islamic law is the antidote to the ills of the North.

Seeing as their motives are external and this is their livelihood and unrelenting desire, they cannot really be negotiated with. We will have to dissolve their instruments of power, we will have to distance them from the population for example.
