For failing to comply with the directive given by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to upgrade their facilities and infrastructure in line with the standards set by the FC T Education Secretariat, about 124 private schools have been pencilled down for closure. FCT Minister, Senator Adamu Aliero, who stated this yesterday, said he is left with no other option than to close down the affected schools, for Abuja to maintain its status as a model in all spheres of human endeavours. The minister disclosed this during the award of certificates of accreditation to 197 private and public schools in Abuja. He said as far as the territory's administration is concerned, no proprietor or school is above the law, adding that those proprietors, who have undermined the demands for schools accreditation, will have their institutions closed down. The minister vowed that the exercise would not mind whether the institutions are locally or internationally funded, stressing that schools operating illegally and those in shanties or uncompleted buildings that pose threats to the future of children and the nation's development, will be shut. "To ensure standards are not compromised, the administration has set up four committees to study the challenges facing education," he added. The minister said the committees are for the closure of sub-standard schools; regulation of school fees; grading and rating of schools; review of standard land size for establishment of schools and the renovation of schools in the territory. Responding to the problem of multiple charges by schools' proprietors, Aliero assured that the committee in charge of the aspect will consider how best to avoid multiple taxes of schools by the FCT Administration and the area councils. Senator Aliero charged the Education Secretariat to fashion out ways of tackling the menace caused by miracle examination centres. Also speaking, the FCT Education Secretary, Mr Hussaini Halilu-Pai, said the provision of full accreditation to 197 schools and partial accreditation to 184 does not make the latter inferior schools to the former. |
Abuja — Amidst fanfare, drumming and dancing, the National Universities Commission (NUC) last week granted approval to the University of Science and Technology, Ifaki, Ekiti State, making it the 104th in the country. Governor Segun Oni, who received the license, said the state would live up to its name as the 'Fountain of Knowledge', which, he said, was not a mere appellation. He recalled that within a year of establishing the University of Education in Ikere, it became noted for excellence. The new university would therefore be anchored on that character of Ekiti and be a nursery for future Nigerian Nobel Laureates. Oni said the university was borne out of the need to solve problems facing mankind, and not just for the sake of having a university. "It will be special right from Day One. The design is such that it will be a low or no emission campus. The platform we are designing will make students with phobia for sciences to become highflyers in the shortest period", he added. On whether the state would be able to adequately fund the university in addition its three existing tertiary institutions, Governor Oni said the state, in the last two years, has allocated more funds to them than their quantum allocations in the previous 11 years of former administrations. Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie had earlier disclosed that the Commission had approved the establishment of 37 universities in the last 10 years and that many more were still expected to come in order to meet the demand for tertiary education in the country. He challenged the Ekiti State government to live up to expectations by ensuring proper funding and strict adherence to quality assurance, so as not to deviate from guidelines set by the Commission. According to him, "you don't just establish universities. It must have a focus. For instance, to address global challenges such as poverty, hunger, energy crises, global warming, climate change, health and economic problems among others." Former Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Peter Okebukola, Chairman of the Ekiti State Council of Chiefs, Oba Adedayo Ajayi Arinjale of Ise Ekiti, who led four other traditional rulers; two former Ministers of Education, Tunde Adeniran, Babalola Borishade; as well as all members of the House of Representatives from the state were among the dignitaries that graced the occasion. |
