We all know that most of our foods here in Nigeria are heavily high in carbohydrate and to lose that extra pound will not be an easy task when we have to eat mostly carbohydrate based foods. Today, we will be discussing five healthy Nigerian snack, every weight watcher out there can easily eat without the fear of adding weight. 1. Garden eggs: This food is one of the healthiest food we have in the country. Now, garden eggs can either be eaten raw or cooked, but, for snacking purposes, we definitely have to eat them raw. Garden egg, which is high in fibre, helps fill us up in no time, thereby ensuring we do not eat too much food, which in turn ensures minimum calorie intake that results in weight loss. Garden eggs are also rich in vitamins and potassium, two major nutrients the body needs. 2. Peanut: Now, we should note that peanut, does not fall in the low calorie food division, however, it is high in fiber and protein, and according to a 2009 research published in ‘The Journal Of Nutrition’, protein, helps in burning fat. One should however be certain not to overindulge in this snack as just an ounce of peanut is 161 calories. 3. Okpa: A delight to most people living in Lagos and the good news about this food is, its packed full of protein. Need something to snack on while less busy at home pr at a friend’s, why not snack on Okpa. Okpa is made from bambara nut which has so many benefits in it to include, lowering of cholesterol, does some antimicrobial actions, helps ensure our bones are healthy amongst several other benefits. 4. Eggs: A hard boiled egg I ensure is part of my meal on a daily basis. Eggs have several benefits which ensures that our system works perfectly. One of the many health benefits of eggs is the presence of protein in it. A single large egg contains about 6 grams of protein, and as we all know a body that has just about the right amount of protein can help with weight loss, increase muscle mass, lower blood pressure and optimize bone health… to name a few 5. Boli (Roasted plantain): This snack is found virtually ob most streets and corners around the country and is just perfect for those already on a low calorie diet. This snack could be made either with ripe or unripe plantain depending on how sweet the tooth of the buyer is. An unripe plantain contains about 22o calories while the ripe one contains 252. The number of boli you can snack on during your leisure hours(s) now depends on how much calories you have already have for the day. Permit me to begin with this task, go to google search, and type ‘Niger Delta’ automatically google will predict ‘Niger Delta Avengers’, that’s how popular the group have become, they are now SEO friendly. Many online news portal have created new pages for the group because they see it as a trending topic, well I don’t blame them on this, we in the digital media knows the amount of traffic any news on this group generates. When news of the agitating militants in the creek camp up, the government initially disregarded it, to them it was a political move by loyalist to former president Jonathan, or perhaps it was an agitation a little ‘Police Action’ can curb. Little did the government knew that these boys in the creek meant business, hence the reason for penning this piece. Can the government fight down militancy in the region? Or will they negotiate with these militants to bring an end to militancy in the region? I totally believe that a negotiation with these militants won’t make our government look weak but it’s a step in these right direction, and this is why I think so: 1. The Militants Are Agitators Not Terrorist They exist a strong difference between a group of armed agitators or freedom fighters from a terrorist cell, that why I never supported any move for the government to negotiate with Boko Haram. The militants in the creek are agitators and to a large extent they are fighting against the injustice melted out against their people. 2. They Have The Support Of The Locals Admit it or not, the indigenous people of Niger Delta are in support of the activities of the militants (after all they claim their agitators is on their behalf). Admit it or not, these locals knows who the militants are, they even know the people behind it, yet you don’t see them ratting them out, why? It’s this simple, they are in support of their activities, and they stand solidly behind them, no wonder little or no Intel is being distributed to the security agencies that are combating the militants. 3. The Militants Adopts Guerilla Warfare Tactics It’s almost impossible fighting an enemy that adopts the guerilla warfare tactics. During the Vietnam War, this pattern was adopted and it made the Americans suffer huge damage. In guerilla warfare, every negative approach of winning a battle is adopted, ambush, attacking unprepared fighters, attacking while pretending to be civilians and a whole lot of negative combat method, but in all, guerilla combatants never engages in an all-out combat. The Niger Delta Militants adopts this pattern, so it will be extremely difficult to know who your enemies are, and if you don’t know them, how can you win? 4. They Are Sophisticated One won’t be far from the truth if you say the militants are professionally trained and they have a structure that works for them. Every of their attack was pre-stated, thoroughly planned and executed. They made it known that there won’t have any military nor civilian casualty in their attacks, and this they have professionally done. 5. It Brings The Government Closer To The People Of Niger Delta Wrong advisers of the president will tell him that negotiating with this group will make him weak, or that they can crush these agitators. But in sheer honesty, those options have been tried and it failed or it’s failing. Now is the time to show the people of Niger Delta that the government listens, believe me, this is a step in the right direction. President Yar Adua (God bless his soul) did it, and it didn’t make him any weaker, rather it cemented his name in Nigeria’s history and the history of the Niger Delta people. Do you agree that the President Buhari led administration should negotiate with the Niger Delta militants? Let us know what you think in the comment box. mrvitalis:thanks for your series of questions... There is no plans for Biafra once we are separated from Nigeria, and thats the obvious truth. |
The term ‘Brexit’ has dominated the news of late, economics guru are faced-down to their drawing board trying to come up with a plan, a plan that will ease the economic stress that is likely to align with the decision of Britain to leave the European Union. Some Britons have come to term with this new reality ‘Brexit’ they now know their fate, others are playing the ‘Game of Time’ waiting for time to settle their fate, a surprising few are asking what the term ‘Brexit’ means, coming to google for lifeline. Brexit Explained Brexit is coined from two words, ‘British Exit’ which simply means, the exit of Britain from the European Union. It was a voting decision carried out by all countries in the United Kingdom on the 23rd of June 2016. Friends have been asking me, “Does it mean that Britain is no longer an European state”? “Is Britain now a continent on its own”? Questions I find rather funny. However, let me use this piece to address all questions on that, Britain remains an European nation as geographical complexities would have it, however, it is the Union (EU) that they recently decided not to be a part of. Same way Nigeria can decided to draw back its membership to the African Union and the ECOWAS. A Plan without a plan The propounders of the Brexit movement did a great job on the campaign for the Brexit. When it all started, they were underdogs going by the odds, prominent British parliamentarians were on the ‘Remain’ side, the full weight of the British Prime Minister David Cameron was on the ‘Team Remain’, and also surprising was the late British MP, Jo Cox (Oh! Such a gentle soul) she stood firmly on the ‘Remain’ side, before her untimely death. Despite these odds mounting against the Brexit movement, they still manage to win. This show clearly a particular variable, the people championing the exit of Britain from Europe had a plan, and they stay through to their plan till the attainment of the plan that led to the now popular Brexit. Obviously, the plans for Brexit has worked, but what the movement now lack is a plan after Brexit, hence the tag “A plan without a plan”. Can Nigeria have a referendum? Shortly after a chunk of the British population voted for the exit of Britain from the EU, political commentators started the comparison, can Nigeria be like Britain? Can we have a referendum to discuss Biafra? And the obvious answer to the thoughts of these politicians is simple, “Nigeria’s democracy is not yet ripe for such” If you have been a follower of my column, you would have known my clear stance on the Biafran movement, and it’s simple, I stand afar from the current movement. A stance that have made me receive various cyber and vocal threat from the foot soldiers of the movement. My lack of support for this current agitation of Biafra, does it make me less Igbo than those clamoring for Biafra? The answer is “No” I am not in support of the current Biafran movement solely because Nnamdi Kanu and the ‘rest’ are yet to state their plans for an independent Biafra outside of Nigeria, and not just ‘talking cheap’ but real and accurate economic plans that will see the survival of ‘infant Biafra’, sadly that’s an angle that is yet to be discussed whenever Biafra is being mentioned, they only focus on the sufferings of Igbos in Nigeria (as if suffering is exclusively ours). The voice of the people is the voice of God We can have a referendum here in Nigeria, I am pretty sure about that, irrespective of the current president’s opinion on this, as long as the people speaks with one voice, after all, “the voice of the people is the voice of God”. And referendum is not achieved with street protest and road blocks that will end up being bloody, but by politicking and consultation, public opinions and conducting of polls, this way general participation can be gained and we will have our referendum. But before that, have we learnt our lessons from Brexit? Can we now push our focus on the way forward for the Igbos when we achieve Biafra, because this is the only and the best tool that can be adopted to win the heart of the many ‘undecided igbos’ myself included. I rest my case. written by Arinze Esomnofu @arinzeesom source: http://www.edliner.com/plan-without-plan-can-biafra-learn-brexit/20108 |

thesicilian:In spite what you mentioned, don't you think there are still positives we can learn from the Enigma "Trump" ? |
Change they say is constant in life, and so also is learning, you don't learning new things, for they shape and define you. And since Donald Trump is making wave in not just the US politics but the worlds politics, it would be only wise our politicians learn these few things from Mr Trump, because believe me, we are way way tired of their same old story and antics. sometimes, I do ask myself “why do you support Mr. Trump, despite everything negative he has said about my countrymen and women”, and the answer is quite simple, he is making those statements because of his love for the American people. America has lost its greatness, so says Mr. Trump, and he is on a mission of making America great again. One thing I have learnt from the Trump character is saying the ‘truth’, don’t think, just say the truth, and that’s what Mr. Trump stands for. If I can learn from Mr. Trump, so can our politicians, perhaps, they too can start their own journey of making Nigeria great again. Here is a compilation of things Nigeria politicians can learn from Donald Trump, the leading candidate of the Republican Party in America. 1. Citizens are tired of lies : in the presidential campaign of Donald Trump so far, no journalist have been able to pinpoint any lies in his statements. He tells Americans things straight up from his mind, irrespective of who he might hurt in the process. 2. Be daring : Trump as we all know can be daring, throwing shades at will to President Obama, Hillary Clinton and surprising of them all, Pope Benedict. Yet his pools don't get affected. Nigeria politicians dares not to dare, even when they are in opposite sides with political gladiators, they act like "zombie" for fear of losing political relevance. 3. Your people comes first : Trump understands this clearly, and it have been his major push. He knows the average Americans don't like immigrants, he knows that they are scared of losing jobs to foreigners and tell them his plans in stopping them have only endeared him to their hearts. Nigerian politicians is clearly aware that unemployment and power supply is one of greatest challenge yet they can't tell us how to fix these things and be 'our Trump'. 4. Speak first and talk later : now this is a tricky one, but it has always landed in the favor of Mr Trump. So either he says right or wrong, the people acknowledge and ignore the wrong ones. Can our politicians be this honest where we trust their words without doubting ? 5. Politics is never a business : Donald Trump will always tell you that he is not a politician, he won't act like one. Which is true, Trump is an American business and one of the richest men in America. He was very rich before he decided to run for office. With Nigerian politicians, the reverse is the case, they sees politics as a business. Numerous times when I interview some individuals and ask them, what they do for a living, surprisingly they answer "I am a politician, by profession". As if politics is now a business. written by Arinze Esomnofu @arinzeesom source: http://www.edliner.com/5-lessons-nigerian-politicians-can-learn-from-donald-trump/4186

MY OWN PEOPLE KILLED MUSA - MY BEST FRIEND (A short story dedicated to the souls lost in Nigeria's ethnicity crises) By Arinze Esomnofu arinzeesomnofu@gmail.com 08031391676 When I was only six, I had a friend who was the age of my father. Although I never knew my father, Nnem (my mother) told me. She said he was tall like Musa, but never had a thin face and those marks like the one in our drawing book which was all over Musa’s face, and that made him look like a cat. On my way to school every morning, Nnem will take me by hand and we will visit Musa’s kiosk near the main road that led to school. I will run to embrace Musa and he will say “Yo waa”. Before I go, he will dip his hands into his 'babariga' and give me lollipops, the ones I liked most and I would hide them from Nnem. When we reach the gate of our school, Nnem will seize my bag and take all the lollipops leaving one for me, and she will say that too much of lollipops will kill my teeth. Then I will never lick the sweets as my classmates did, I will make sure I crush them with my teeth so that it will not kill my teeth. On Fridays when I will visit Musa, he will not look at me or talk to me, he will sit the way I sat when I played with sand – his eyes closed- he will knock his head softly on the floor, raise it up, and cover his face with his hands. Though I never saw Musa go to church, he will still pray with a chaplet, the types with beads bigger than the one our teacher sister Margaret wore. Then one faithful Friday morning when I was in school playing with the toys Nnem bought for me, we started hearing shouts and cries of people singing "Iwe Iwe Iwe" and then i saw people running with speed i have not seen anyone run before. I saw men with matchets and long sticks, then we knew something was wrong, and we all started crying. All that happened was strange. Parents were running all over our school compound, shouting names of their children and moving them to cars parked outside. Our P.E teacher ran to the school’s store and came out with a cutlass in his hands shouting; “where are they, those uncircumcised fools?” Soon, Nnem came and bundled me into her arms, shaking and saying things at the same time. Instead of the bus we usually boarded home we both stopped an Okada, and Nnem was still holding me tight, talking out of breath. “Thank God, thank God ifukwa, they said these people are going into schools and killing children, Nwam”. I thought that our house has burnt down too, as I saw a heap of something like tyre we used to play, burning beside the road, when we were coming back. But everything was still the same only that Papa Obiora who never came back to his house till 5pm was sitting in front of the house with other men, discussing something, heaving their shoulders. Then Nnem called her sister Oluchi on the phone, and asked her if the thing reached their side. “What is that?” I asked again, but Nnem said it was nothing, carried me up, and told me my friend Musa has traveled to Kano but will soon return. I asked my mother where Kano was, so that I will visit him, but Nnem said it was too far. All these things happened Twelve years ago when I was still six. But now that I am eighteen I now knew what had happened without Nnem telling me. I now knew that what happened then was one of the incessant ethnic-religious crises between the Igbos and Hausas. And that Musa was Hausa and me an Igbo; there was a clear difference between us, so that I wouldn’t have loved him. Then I knew Musa never traveled to Kano, rather he was killed by those people Nnem called “our own people”. “Our own people did to them what they did to us”, she would say, and this made me hate her. Now the death of Musa came back to me as if it was fresh. His gentle face still peered at me when I closed my eyes, and when I wake past his shop, I would still see something like him, sitting on his box chair, and pushing needles into shoes. My head will swell and I will run back home. At night, I will watch the NTA news, where I would see Igbos and Hausas shaking and hugging themselves, and after the news a song will come on, a song that ends with “unity in diversity is our strength”, and will because of that conclude that the violence, the Hausa-Igbo crises, was a thing of the common people; people like me and Musa, not for the leaders who hugged each other as long as there is cash to share. At bed when I wanted to sleep, I tore out a sheet of paper from my exercise book and wrote on it in capital letters. “MUSA MY BEST FRIEND, AM SORRY!! FOR NOW I KNOW YOU WERE KILLED BY MY OWN PEOPLE. PLEASE FORGIVE US”. I folded the paper in my hand, and slept with tears in my eyes. Tomorrow, I will drop it at a place where used to be Musa’s shop, and hope he will pick it the way he picked me up when I was six. |
