Politics / Re: It’s Time For A ‘United States Of Africa’. Discuss. by DeathParade: 1:52pm On May 21 |
Sorry to rain on your parade, but even if Africa combines into one USA-like entity, currently, entire Africa's Combined Defence Budget is half of India's Defence Budget. And India's Defence Budget, while the third largest in the world, is still just 1/10th of USA's defence budget or 1/3rd of China's defence budget. So making Africa into a US-like entity will make African military one of the top 10 powers in the world. But not strong enough to tackle the top most superpowers alone, especially with the kind of internal security challenges Africa faces. Once internal security challenges are dealt with, that will unlock the true potential of Africa. Ofcourse, realistically, I don't think Africa can unite. Why would a country like Egypt want to become one with a nation like DRC? Also, doing so will reduce the number of UN seats Africa has from 54 to just 1. Imagine that. So for various reasons, it is not as good as option as it seems at first glance. If a lack of geo-economic might is your concern, perhaps Africa should look at the European Union model and NATO, where an economic model and a mutual defence pact, helps create a stronger Africa without giving up UN seats and without having to deal with awkward cultural mixes that are not compatible enough to be part of a single nation. |

Quintessence44: Well stated. In the international comity of nations, size matters a lot. If Nigeria splits, it will be less influential than it is now. Sometimes, even if you are a poor nation, by having a large population and pooling your resources, it is possible to achieve things that even advanced, developed nations can not. For example, India landing on the Moon while UK being unable to launch even a single satellite into orbit on its own. This is similar to how economies of scale works in manufacturing. Ofcourse large population alone is not enough to achieve this. But large population is one of the things needed. It also helps to draw in foreign investment if you can pull even a fraction of your people out of poverty and give them a very minimal discretionary spending, and then you raise import tariffs on finished goods but keep them low for components, it will convince many foreign companies to invest in opening at least an assembly plant within your country, because you have a domestic market. And then you can leverage that to even export finished goods to smaller countries next to you. This is exactly what India does and Nigeria can follow this as well. |

Litmus:Who said people in India are "chronically poor"? 415 Million Indians have been lifted out of poverty in last 15 years alone. Today only 16% of Indians live in poverty and only 0.8% of Indians live in extreme poverty. Indian Government spends $68 Billion every year on just subsidies. And $100 Billion on infrastructure every year. And this is just Central Government, State Governments also spend on subsidies and infrastructure. So yeah, when you say "if Indians are so wealthy why are they not investing in their poor", we already are investing on our poor. And as a result, poverty in India is falling at the fastest rate in the entire world. Source of all this information is the UN Report on MultiDimensional Poverty Index 2023 and an IMF paper:- https://hdr.undp.org/content/2023-global-multidimensional-poverty-index-mpi#/indicies/MPI https://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/india-has-almost-wiped-out-extreme-poverty-imf-101649311909782.html As for Indians being heads of IMF and World Bank as well as CEOs of Google, Microsoft, Adobe, IBM, Visa. Well that is because Indians are a talented bunch. India has literally landed on the Moon. Now cry my dear Chinese stooge. You really expect us to believe that the same India that openly flouted Western calls for sanctioning Russia and Iran, the same India that launched its domestic SFMS as alternative to Western SWIFT payment system, the same India that ditched the dollar in oil trade with UAE, the same India that fought the American big pharma to be able to provide low-cost AIDS medicine to entire Africa, you think that this same India is a "Western stooge"? You have no idea what you are talking about. Bunkbars: 8.8% of all FDI-led projects in UK have Indian funding. After USA, India is the second largest foreign investor in UK's economy. Indians do invest where they find it to be worthy. India's Modi seeks African Union's full membership in G20 https://www.reuters.com/world/indias-modi-seeks-african-unions-full-membership-g20-2023-06-18/ Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written to the leaders of the G20 nations proposing the African Union be given full, permanent membership of the diplomatic group at its upcoming summit in India, an official source said. Modi's proposal to grant the African Union full membership in the G20 demonstrates India's commitment to strengthening Africa's representation and partnership in shaping global affairs, the source said. The G20 or Group of 20 is an intergovernmental forum of the world's major developed and developing economies. The members represent around 85% of global GDP, over 75% of global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population. The grouping comprises 19 countries and the European Union. The G20 this year also invited nine non-member "guest" countries, including Bangladesh, Singapore, Spain and Nigeria, besides international organisations such as the United Nations, World Health Organization, the World Bank and the IMF. "This will be a right step towards a just, fair, more inclusive and representative global architecture and governance," the source said of the African Union proposal. "(The) prime minister is a strong believer in having a greater Voice of the Global South countries on international platforms, particularly of African countries." India began its year-long presidency of the G20 in December last year and will host the summit later this year. |

[flash] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IovnXCZzyeU [/flash] African Union represents 1.4 Billion people but has only one permanent representative (South Africa) and two Guests at G20. Meanwhile, Europe is half the population but has five permanent representatives and one guest at G20. It is high time that the African Union be given a say in the G20, a group that sets the agenda for Earth's Economy. As a result, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written to fellow G20 members that India wants to make African Union a full fledged member of G20 this year. (India is President of G20 this year and is hosting the meeting). |

For example, during a recent Exercise Malabar, three carriers (one each from J a p a n , U S A and I n d i a) were leading during the photo ops. Actual operational formation can be seen from the satellite picture below. There you can see the Destroyers leading. 2 Likes

Stoplying:This chronology, more than anything, reveals more about how clueless you are regarding the topic you are engaging me on. Proof follows:- In point number 3, you claim I said "one person" has dark skin and he is upper caste. No dude, "Tamil Brahmin" is not the name of one person. It is the name of an entire community of black-skinned highest caste people in India who literally number in the millions. The rest of your chronology is similarly mistaken because your own ignorance leads you to misinterpret my arguments and you keep refusing to keep a cool head and read my replies that would clear the bulk of your confusion. For example, you think I claimed there is no skin-colour based discrimination in India. When the truth is that I was disputing your assertion that skin-colour discrimination led to Caste System in India. I agree that skin-colour discrimination exists in India. I also agree that Caste System once existed in India. But I do not agree that skin-colour discrimination led to Caste System in India. Get it? And as I keep pointing out to you, your refusal to learn from the Indian example shows how narrow your own thinking is. Like I said, lessons can be learnt from the successes of other nations even if those other nations are more backward than your own. Just like I gave you that example of me learning a lesson on disaster management from Democratic Republic of Congo. |

Agreed. Forget Dalit Billionaires, even the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of India's Constitution was a Dalit. But I think you meant to reply to " @Stoplying ", since he is the one who is so unaware of ground realities to the point that he thinks skin colour discrimination led to Caste System. Also, this entire Caste System debate is taking us away from the actual topic here: protection of indigenous people. 1 Like |

Stoplying: 1) Is this thread about Indian Caste System? Answer: No. 2) Why did you bring Indian Caste System into this debate when you yourself say you are not an expert on it? Answer: Because you find it beneath you to learn any lessons from India when it comes to the topic of this thread: protecting indigenous people. 3) Did you stop making bogus claims about Indian Caste System such as the claim that skin colour discrimination led to Caste System? Answer: No. 4) Did you make strawman arguments trying to insinuate that I am denying Skin-colour discrimination in India just because I am denying that it led to creation of Caste System? Answer: Yes. 5) Did you pick relevant points from my reply regarding the actual topic of this thread and thereby make an effort to stop derailment of this thread? Answer: No. |

Stoplying: I presented facts, naming exact laws and tribes protected by laws. You responded with random videos. And I am the propagandist? As for your latter line: "Anybody who wants to take India as an exempme on social issues is a dumb idiot." ^ I think this is a very immature world view. Lessons can be learnt from other nations' positive experiences irrespective of how backward that nation is. I have learnt lessons on disaster management from even nations like Democratic Republic of Congo. I certainly didn't let a "superiority complex" develop in me that blinds me to the achievements of nations worse off than mine. But that does not seem to be the case for you. |

Stoplying:How lazy can you be? You refuse to use your words and instead post two videos that are unrelated to your original claim and my counter-claim about skin colour. It is also apparent that you deliberately ignored the latter part of my comment, the part that actually has something to do with the topic of this thread. Shows that you are not interested in a serious discussion about the topic on hand. You just want to deflect, and your way of doing that is to turn this from a conversation about protection of indigenous people into a conversation about India's "Caste System". Use your words man. Or don't reply at all. |

Stoplying:I have heard many outrageous claims about Indian "Caste System" from foreigners but this one takes the cake. "Caste System" is based on the lightness of skin? Dude, some Tamil Brahmins are blacker than many Black Africans. LOL. As for "protection of indigenous people", that is indeed a lesson one can learn from India. But for that, one needs to first stop listening to foreign propaganda about India and realize that "Caste System" has been outlawed in India since 1950. More importantly, a "Reservation System" has been introduced since then that gives India's tribals and so-called "Lower Castes" a preference in admission to Government Colleges and Government Jobs. There exists laws like the SC/ST protection act that favour to Lower Castes. And that there exist people of the Upper Caste who are below the poverty line in India, even though only 3% of Indians are below the poverty line today. The clearest example of India protecting indigenous people is the Sentinelese tribe and other tribes that inhabit the Andaman and Nicobar islands of India. So it is possible to learn from India in that regard. 1 Like |

EKONGKING: Factually incorrect. Indian population mix 1950: Hindu: 84.9% Muslim: 9.8% Christians: 2% 2011: Hindu: 79.8% Muslim: 14.2% Christians: 3% Source: India Census Data Muslim and Christian populations in India have grown at a faster rate than Hindu population. There are laws that favour Muslims and Christians over Hindus. Muslims and Christians have control over their own Mosques and Churches whereas Hindu temples are placed under government control by law. Muslim pilgrimage to Haj is actively subsidized by Government of India. India has had Muslims as Presidents. It is clear from this that India is not actively targeting Muslims. Not denying that there are Hindu-Muslim and Hindu-Christian and even Muslim-Christian clashes or riots in India. Just pointing out the fact that it is not one-sided oppression of Muslims, despite what the international media portrays it as. Instead, it is two communities of different religions fighting each other even as they continue to thrive together. I don't blame you for misunderstanding, though. You are a victim of media propaganda and confirmation bias. But when faced with data, I expect you wjll manage to identify and correct your false bias. 1 Like |

RenaissanceGuy:I do understand your point. But you are applying this negotiation tactic in the wrong situation. That is a very petty and immature way to think about this. If you needlessly delay such procedural issues, it doesn't make Nigeria appear stronger. It makes Nigeria appear weaker. Too weak to honour its own word. Nigeria and India are both signatories to the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organised Crime. Nigeria is duty-bound to honour commitments it makes to the comity of nations. If you want to "show diplomatic muscle", you do so by enforcing your domestic laws equally for each country irrespective of how powerful they are. For example, Back in 2009 a US aircraft carrying 200+ US Marines made a minor breach in the Indian airspace. India forced that aircraft to land and did not let the aircraft or its passengers leave until they cleared the due procedure. In this case, India implemented its law irrespective of how powerful the other party was. This is how one shows "strength with honour". 1 Like |

They are something we really need after China launched their Type-055 Destroyers. iblawi: In Delhi or Mumbai: Around ₹2 crore which converts to ₦110,208,012.30 In other metros: Around ₹1.2 crore which converts to ₦66,124,807.38 Nemesis4you:Few Inaccuracies:- 1.) OFB officers are not IAS, they have their own cadre which is selected from India's most competitive exam for engineers: The Indian Engineering Services Exam. Suffice it to say, they are not non-technicals. They are some of the best engineers in the country. . 2.) One Major reason for OFB underperforming: They are a government department. Which means that they don't have to earn anything because they get handed down a budget, they can't fire people for underperforming, they don't have as much autonomy as a DPSU when it comes to investing in new product development. Turning the OFB into 12 DPSUs will take care of most of these problems. While many consider the Private sector to be a panacea, selling OFB to the private sector makes very little sense. Indian private enterprises are mostly averse to R& D, especially in defence. In most cases, private companies don't do own R& D and only make use of technology they get handed down from DRDO or from JVs with foreign companies. Only new age startups like Tonbo are the ones doing their own R& D. But they don't have the money to buy OFB. So OFB could only have been bought by large private conglomerates which would not have invested a lot in R& D. Instead, in the form of a DPSU, OFB might innovate like HAL does. So the government is very justified in what it is doing with OFB. . Nemesis4you:Agreed. |
