The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, is to address the Royal Institute of International Affair, Chatham House, in London during his short visit to the United Kingdom. A statement issued by the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation said that Buhari who left Abuja for UK on Thursday on a short working visit is expected to hold meetings with key members of the British political establishment and interact with some global institutions with stakeholder interest in the affairs of Nigeria. The organisation also said in a statement signed by its spokesman, Mallam Garba Shehu that it has evidence that a top management staff of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is behind the hate campaigns against its presidential candidate and his family aired in the recent documentary by African Independent Television and Nigeria Television Authority. Shehu said the campaign office has confirmed that the agency was the sponsor of all the dirty campaigns against the APC presidential candidate on AIT, NTA and several other media platforms. While saying that the action contravenes the NIMASA Act, the Public Service Regulations, and the Independent National Electoral Commission Act 2010 as amended, among others, the APC decried the situation where a government agency uses public funds to sponsor a campaign of calumny against its candidate, which it said is not only illegal, but should also be condemned. He said that the action should be investigated by the Joint Committees of the National Assembly on Marine Transportation, stressing that if these claims were found to be true, disciplinary action should be taken against the agency and its leadership. The statement said: “It is a well known fact that the Director General of the Agency, Mr. Ziakede Patrick Akpobolokemi was President Goodluck Jonathan’s and a well-known ex-militant’s errand boy. “He was appointed there for the sole aim of satisfying an ex-militant’s camp, an assignment he has carried out well to the satisfaction of those who put him there through the award of a concessionaire phantom PPP project. “Under this contract, a certain company, (Global West Vessels Specialists Ltd) was handed the legal responsibility of the Nigerian Navy of protecting the Nation’s Waterway and NIMASA’s Maritime Security function to the surprise of all industry observers and yet fail woefully in offering the necessary protection for the theft of Nigerian Crude Oil, which has only increased since then among other sea related crimes.” http://thenationonlineng.net/new/buhari-jets-out-to-uk-to-address-chatam-house/

The United States has offered more assistance to Nigeria in its fight against Boko Haram if the Federal Government keeps to February 14 and 28 poll timetable. The Deputy Spokesperson of the US Department of State, Marie Harf, gave the condition at the department’s daily briefing on Thursday. The transcript of the session was obtained on Friday by our correspondent. She said the US was committed to the building of capacity of Nigerian troops and other countries in the region. She said: “We certainly provide a great amount of assistance to Nigeria when it comes to the fight against Boko Haram. “Well, we certainly have, as the United States, provided assistance to help in this fight, and you heard the Secretary when he was in Nigeria say we want to do more to help the Nigerians. “Part of that depends upon them going forward with the elections as scheduled, holding them – limiting the violence, having credible and fair elections. “So we certainly believe this is a critical challenge. Boko Haram is a little bit of a different threat than ISIS. Obviously, each threat is different, but we’re very committed to helping the countries in the region fight this.” To win the war against Boko Haram, Harf said Nigeria and allied forces (Chad, Cameroon and Niger) require more capacity and more willingness. “Well, I clearly think if you just look at the sheer amount of violence that Boko Haram has been able to perpetrate that there needs to be more capacity and more willingness among some of the parties. Some of the – there’ve been some times when people have stepped up and really tried to be aggressive against Boko Haram, but clearly more needs to be done,” she added. Asked if Western nations were reluctant in moving against Boko Haram, Harf said: “Well, I think that’s probably a larger analytical question that I’m not going to delve into from here. “I can just speak for the U.S. and what – this building and this government is very committed to helping Nigeria and the countries in the region build their capacity and push them to take on this fight even more seriously.” On the alleged incursions into Nigeria by Chadian forces to fight Boko Haram, she said she could not confirm it. But she was quick to add that the US thinks a regional effort is needed to curtail the insurgents. She said: “Well, we have obviously seen these reports about where certain troops are and who’s fighting who. We do believe that a regional effort is needed to fight Boko Haram. “Obviously, Nigeria plays the most important role here. So I can’t confirm reports that Chadian forces have been inside Boko – excuse me, inside Nigeria fighting Boko Haram, but we do think that a regional effort is needed. “We’ve talked to the regional partners about it, so I can check and see if there are more details.” http://thenationonlineng.net/new/boko-haram-us-offers-help-fg-keeps-poll-timetable/ |

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has cautioned former militants of the Niger Delta, Alhaji Mujaheed Dokubo-Asari, Victor Ben Ebikabowei aka Boy Loaf, and Government Ekpemupolo, aka, Tompolo, over all the inflammatory statements that are being credited to them in the build up to the presidential election that is coming up next week Saturday. The commission while making this warning in its latest report which its chairman, Dr. Katina Lantos Swett, made available to correspondents of the Department of State in Washington, DC during the week, added that such statements coming from the former militants who have been threatening wars if President Goodluck Jonathan loses the election, could lead to a religiously-motivated violence if proper measures are not taken by politicians and security agents in good time. Reacting to the inflammatory statements that are being credited to the former militants, the USCRIF warned President Goodluck Jonathan and other candidates to prevent the looming electoral violence by calming their supporters as well as warning them against such statements. USCIRF also called on all Nigeria’s political parties to hold responsible their members who are issuing statements inciting violence along religious lines. It also called on the Nigeria’s police and judiciary to impartially hold accountable all perpetrators of electoral violence. The agency however hailed the decision of the United States to withhold visas to persons who engage in, plan, and/or perpetrate electoral violence in Nigeria, adding that such decision would send a strong message in support of peaceful elections in the country. It also maintained that every effort needed to be undertaken to ensure peaceful elections and prevent the use of religion to stir up more violence Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council has condemned in the strongest terms the continued escalation of attacks perpetrated by Boko Haram terrorists, pointing to an attack on 1 February in Borno State, Nigeria and to increasing attacks in the Lake Chad Basin region, including, on 29 and 30 January, against Chadian forces deployed in Cameroon near the town of Fotokol, which killed four Chadian soldiers and injured 12 others. In a statement issued to the press in New York, the 15 members extended their condolences and sympathies to the families of those killed and injured, and to the peoples and the Governments of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chad. Recalling their Presidential Statement of 19 January this year, Council members reiterated their deep concern that the activities of Boko Haram are undermining the peace and stability of the West and Central African region. They urged the region to enhance regional military operations and coordination to more effectively and immediately combat Boko Haram. In that regard, they commended the Chadian army’s swift assistance in Cameroon, which resulted in neutralisation of 123 Boko Haram combatants and the capture of others. Members of the 15-State body reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including the actions of Boko Haram, constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whosoever committed. http://leadership.ng/news/409599/cautions-dokubo-tompolo-inflammatory-statements

The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu 11, has warned the new Assistant Inspector of Police(AIG) in charge of Zone 2 Police Headquarters,Lagos, Mr Joseph Mbu to desist from any attempt to intimidate the people of Lagos as he earlier did in Rivers State, when he was police commissioner. Akiolu gave the warning yesterday, while receiving the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate,General Muhammadu Buhari’s delegation in his palace. The traditional ruler who urged people of Lagos to cooperate with security agencies, warned Mbu, saying: “Nobody can intimidate us. Let it be clear that Lagos is not Port Harcourt.” “Though police redeployment is normal during elections, but any policeman that comes here to cause trouble will fail. I and my people will give him a matching order.” He said police officers should not be partisan, adding that “police should do their constitutional role without bias. He said: “I want to sound a word of warning to security agencies. If anybody comes here to come and cause trouble he will fail. Others have tried and failed. Sometimes back, someone (a police officer) was posted here and he attacked me and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I told him (police officer) he will fail and he did fail,” the monarch said. He however urged the people of Lagos to cooperate with the security agencies for the general well-being of the state. “I urged my people to cooperate with the police and the army to do their job. I want all my people to be peaceful and law-abiding. All shall be well with us,” he said. The monarch said Lagos State has suffered under the PDP-led Federal Government since the return of civil rule in 1999. He described Buhari as an upright, honest and dedicated gentleman who meant well for the country. “Lagos won’t ever lag behind again in the forthcoming dispensation. I know the ability of Buhari. He is very passionate about this country and he will deliver,” he added. http://thenationonlineng.net/new/nobody-can-intimidate-us-oba-lagos-warns-aig-mbu/ |

The Emir of Gusau, Alhaji Kabiru Danbaba, on Tuesday, honoured President Goodluck Jonathan with the title of Garkuwan Manoman Zamfara (the shield of Zamfara farmers). The title, which was in recognition of the President’s contributions to farmers in the state, means “President Goodluck Jonathan is the shield of farmers in Zamfara.’’ The Emir commended President Jonathan for appointing Retired Gen. Aliyu Gusau as Minister of Defence and Alhaji Bashir Yuguda, the Minister of State for Finance, among others, in his administration. Responding, Jonathan, who was in the state to inaugurate his presidential campaign committee, said if re-elected, he would continue to support farmers and farming activities in the state. Nigerians and their infinite capacity for facile propaganda. I wake up this morning and what I see all over social media is some poor taste, childish diagnosis of Major General Buhari as being sick. Well, I agree. I agree that Buhari is sick. I am sick, too. Any Nigerian who is not sick is not sick because he or she is incurably sick. We are all sick. And we should be sick. So, yes,… …Buhari is sick of the monumental corruption that has become institutionalized in Nigeria. Buhari is sick of the incompetence of a government that cannot protect the lives and properties of its citizens; …Buhari is sick of the lack of a sense of urgency in the circles of government in Nigeria. Buhari is sick of a country that has placed itself on permanent reverse gear. Buhari is sick of a country that has left itself naked as it is raped dry by vagabonds in power. Buhari is sick of a youth population without jobs. Buhari is sick of a country where university education has become comparable to 8th grade competence in advanced civilizations. Buhari is sick of a country where roads are death traps. Buhari is sick of a country where people go into political offices near poor, but turn stupendously wealthy overnight. Buhari is sick of a country where education is priced beyond the reach of the common masses. Buhari is sick of a country where $20 Billion (possibly $40 Billion) of public fund develops legs and walks away, its whereabouts knowingly unknown. Buhari is sick of watching the country he loves ranked at the bottom of corruption index by Transparency International. Buhari is sick of a country that earns billions of dollars in oil revenue, yet has not a single functional oil refinery. Buhari is sick of a country where government has bowed to the dictates of power generator cabals in a conspiracy that ensures perpetual darkness. Buhari is sick of a country where senators and congressmen earn more than the president of the United States of America. Buhari is sick of a country where soldiers are so demoralized to confront a ragtag Boko Haram terror sect. Buhari is sick of a country where convicted looters are pardoned and fast tracked for senate positions. Buhari is sick of a country where life expectancy is among the lowest in the world. Buhari is sick of a country that is on international news for all the wrong reasons. So, yes, Buhari is sick; and so am I. The big Question is, why is Jonathan not sick as well? Why has Jonathan remained healthy in the face of all the above-listed filth and diseases? The Question is why is not every Nigerian sick of all the social maladies and existential outbreaks? It is a time to be sick, my friends. Buhari is; I am. Are you? Let’s all get sick of where and how Nigeria is! Let’s get real sick!!And the sicker we are, the healthier we are going to be. Let’s schedule a doctor’s visit on February 14. Let’s not forget our health insurance card (voter card) as we go for this February appointment. We need to feel better. But until February 14, let’s feel sick… …Real sick! My footnote: There is no medical institution known as Ahmadu Bello Teaching Hospital as the fake letterheads read. What everybody but the brainless GEJ pathetic propagandist know is Ahmadu Bello UNIVERSITY Teaching Hospital. -Vitus Ozoke, Ph.D is a lawyer and professor of conflict analysis and dispute resolution at Salisbury University, Maryland, USA @vitusozoke http://saharareporters.com/2015/01/18/yes-buhari-sick-and-so-i-am-vitus-ozoke |

The Speaker of Kebbi State House of Assembly, Hon. Habib Musa Jega has been impeached. Hon. Mohammed Shalla Gwandu has been sworn-in by the clerk of the House, Shehu Usman Randali, as the new Speaker. The impeachment, which took place around 10:25pm at the House of Assembly in Birnin Kebbi was signed by 16 members out of 24 members of the House. Shortly after the swearing of the new speaker, Hon Mohammed Shalla Gwandu thanked the House for the trust they had in him and promised to work harmoniously with all members and the state government. “I thank all the members for the confidence they have in me and promise to wok harmoniously with both the state government and members of the House so that our people will reap dividends of democracy,” he said. Hon Abdullahi Garba Fana representing Dandi constituency told news men that the House sat and reviewed the performance of the former leader and concluded that the impeached speaker was incompetent to continue as their leader. When asked to mention the impeachable offences committed by the ex-speaker, he said “The reason is just incompetence and members have no confidence in him any longer.” The impeachment is coming barely two days after the news of 17 members of House allegedly planning to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC). http://leadership.ng/news/391990/kebbi-assembly-impeaches-speaker-10-35pm |
